    Lol. I so admire your skills!
    I put together an 8 cubby storage shelf. It took me 4 hours! But I was taking lots of breaks. I have had such a hard time in the past that someone ELSE had to come save my “destruction.”
    I turned on RUclips and played and replayed the instructions (and come to find out the two videos were NOT the version I had, so I had to switch back and forth.)
    I’m 67 and this was the first time I did not rely on anyone else… well other than RUclips. I’m proud to say that I was so thorough that I caught an error EARLY that would have required totally starting over!
    You ROCK, Serena. Thank you for showings we can do anything we put our minds to!

    We have a saying about our projects that seem to grow bigger and longer as there are steps and snafus that take a lot longer than anticipated-"there's always the ugly part"--when you are done with the project and the time it's taking; and it isn't even close to being finished. Very impressed with your work and design. Congratulations!

    Serena, so many things crossed my mind when I watched this last night. The thing that made me smile was your vocabulary. You're dropping all sorts of terms like dominoes that make you sound like a pro. I love that you always share your mistakes along the way, what you learned, and the finished, and of course gorgeous, final project. I thought your bathroom vanity was ambitious, but this closet build is really something else. I'm so happy for you, too, making a quiet space for your podcasts, or journaling or simply staring out that window. You deserve every bit of success that comes your way. You are also rocking the jeans and shirt and wow, those pockets are something else. They would be great for gardening as well. Congratulations and thank you for keeping it real, today and always.

    You are a glutton for punishment! So much detail on everything. I would have given up long ago. Kudos to you for your craftmanship and persistence. I don't know if they already make one, but Kreg should make an adjustable jig for putting on cupboard handles. It should fit at right angles using the top or bottom plus one the sides to anchor it. Then we'd be able to take it and do every cupboard or drawer the same without further measuring (and stress!). By the way, I live in an apartment (with a courtyard, thank goodness) but there's no room for tools so I made my entire hallway into storage on one side for my tools. I, obviously, can't have anything too large as I have to carry things outside to use them. But on the top of the main bookcase I store my protective gear, including my boots. They are a lovely pair of 'Steel Blue' boots. I bought them a few years ago and I think they'll probably last me for the rest of my life. Super comfortable from the moment you put them on. I don't know if it's an Australian-only brand but they're well-worth the price if anyone is looking for new, protective shoes. (No, I do not work for Steel Blue.)

      This means so much, Suzy, thank you!! We all make mistakes, especially when we are new at doing a project that we've never tried before. It's so funny how I always hear something new every time I watch it. A new joke, a line that I didn't remember hearing last time, and it cracks me up!!

    Wow!!! Congratulations! Ahhhmazing!! Goals!!! Did you say how much it cost you? I will definitely be sharing this video with my husband. I'm so impressed. From Sketchup to execution. I love your work.

      Thanks, Jazzy! Total, it was about $1,000. I paid $750 for the 14 sheets of plywood pre-pandemic prices. So it would be a little more now. And the extra costs were for things like topcoat, clothing rods, drawer pulls, etc.

    This is so awesome. I want to learn how to build so bad! How did you acquire your knowledge and skill in this area? Did you attend a class or just get busy and learn through trial and error?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  3 года назад +1

      You can learn, Monica!! For me, building like this was just trial and error in some respects, but I am also finishing up a carpentry program at my local community college, but in that program, we focused more on rough carpentry, like framing. But some of the same concepts carry over to furniture (like making sure things are supported properly. But honestly, I think it was just a matter of making smaller things first, like boxes and just getting comfortable with tools and then trial and error. I did a lot of learning on how to use SketchUp because I wanted to make sure I could visualize the closet first before I started building. And I just took my time. And while there are still some mistakes I made, I learned from them and know what to do better next time! :) Just get started and you'll start to develop the skills you're looking for! :)

      @@ThriftDiving thanks so much for responding I truly appreciate this information and encouragement! I'll definitely look into the carpentry class as that is of interest. But I'll take your advice and just get going on a small project and just build on the mistakes I'm sure to make. 😁
