  • We've seen some bright 14mm lenses before, but nothing like the new Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art! Along with the incredibly fast aperture, this lens has a number of features to make your astrophotography experience even better. Chris and Jordan took one out for a night of reviewing and night photography, and they have opinions.

    The quality of this lens was on full display here. All of the customizability! And an excellent review of it. My only nit is that there was no discussion of vignetting, which seemed pretty obvious in the studio images. One more: there was obvious fringing in the bokeh circles which is usually hard to fix but it was not noted.

    • @mladenpopovicphoto
      @mladenpopovicphoto Год назад +3

      It's not fringing, as a supreme astro lens it captures Doppler effect at bokeh level :)

    Thanks for the review! Glad you guys are still at it, and happy to see a standardized chart being used (could use more details about it - maybe that's over on the website?). Regarding focus speed: I'm wondering if setting the focus to spot and the moving the spot near/far is as relevant a test of focus ability as using 'zone'? With zone focus (the mode I use most often) the camera has to select the area of the scene to focus on, potentially creating some delay.

    As an Astro landscape shooter and owner of the Sony 14GM, Sigma 14 1.8 Art, i see this new Sigma a great new addition to my collection, with similar optic performance, this lens offers many other advantage over the Sony , the F1.4 aperture, the taper shape front housing that is great for lens heater use, and the Manual focus lock is another killer feature, tripod mount ring makes it so much easier to use with tracker......all in all, definitely a lens I want to own. for the cons, it's a big and heavy lens, but it's not any bigger and heavier than the Sigma 14 1.8 which I am already used to, gone is the ugly coma so it sounds like a keeper to me.
    Now, where is the Z and RF mount? even I am phasing out my Sony system I will still get this lens and will use the adapter with my Z9 and Z8 for now. hope some day Sigma does produce the Z and RF mount.

    • @Al.j.Vasquez

      RF mount likely never to happen, if 3rd parties had the permission to make RF lenses, I'd probably own an RP already, but I'll stick to my M50 until either Sony, Panasonic or Nikon add full touchscreen controls for their settings.

    • @dannyli9424
      @dannyli9424 Месяц назад +1

      @@joaododesign now i own this lens and have been used for two milky way season already, i would say due to the size and weight, the Sony 14GM is a much better general purpose lens, the sigma 14 dg dn does offer some unique feature such as Manual focus lock and easy to use lens heater, also little better coma control too, but if you are not buying the lens mainly just for astro, i am not sure is worth the effort carrying a such big lens around. It's not like the Sony is bad, it's still a great lens already.

    My favourite lens right now is the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art. I just got a cropped sensor camera and I'm excited to try it! I've been eyeing something like this because sometimes 50 is a bit too far, but it looks like they only have a 28 at 1.4, the EF mount 14mm is 1.8. I got my 50 used from Henry's, so I'm glad I got it when I did. It works exactly the same as the RF 50mm 1.2 from Canon, but it was like half the price, and it's slightly heavier due to the metal exterior compared to Canon's plastic. I'm hoping to get something wide angle, so I guess I'll keep my eye out.

    Also LOL at the lens collar. Sigma didn’t include a lens collar on their 100-400 (which is my most used lens) but they give you one on a 14mm.

    You get what you pay for.
    Sigma has terrible customer support, back in the 80s I made the mistake of trying Sigmas (knock - off) new 28-135 mm image stabilized lens.
    Rather than purchasing the original Canon model. And within 3 years the sigmas aperture stopped working. It wouldn't close down in any mode.
    I called sigma directly and the service department contact, he told me to send it in for repairs (insured mail of course.)
    And several weeks later with no reply. I had to contact them only to discover repairs are not an option as that lens was discontinued and parts are not made nor stored for repairs.
    But they offered a 28-105 that was new.
    I refused to purchase another piece of junk from sigma. Then the fool asked of I wanted my lens returned and I said of course idiot.
    That lens sits on my desk as a paper weight and a reminder for me to never purchase third party items of any form.
    Canon for Canon, Nikon for Nikon.
    I did purchase Canon's original 28- 135mm image stabilized macro and even today that Canon lens works fine to this day.

    What's the point of this lens beside astrophotography?

    What for would one want a Superwideangle with superfast F Stop?
    Makes no sense at all: If I would use it for landscape I would choose F8.
    Architecture as well.
    1.4 is maybe great for Portraits though. For sure not with 14mm

      Have you seen the video? It's mainly for astrophotography.

    So glad you didn’t say “petaphiles” at the beginning.
