I’m using Leica SL2 and some Lux and APO lenses, but truth to be told, in mirrorless these Z-mount lenses of my colleague are the only ones close to or on par with my APOs…
Love the fact they are doing something different as you can simply adapt any pedestrian 135 from canon or sony thanks to the Zmount flange distance and diameter. That rear element is indeed massive! I'm disappointed you didn't shoot more point light sources to see the minimized mechanical bokeh amount. Now all that's left is the 35 f1.2 and their 2023 roadmap is done.
It looks like an amazing lens. The weight is not bad. One thing I like is that it has an 82 mm thread, which it can take filters from my 24-70 mm f2.8 lens. The bokeh looks amazing probably because of the edge to edge optics.

Out of curiosity, I just checked an e-shop with photo equipment. They offer 11 135mm lenses for Canon (EF and RF) and 8 for Nikon (F and Z). Question for Jordan: What's causing the weird glitchy artifacting in this video? I noticed a couple spots of it, one is at 3:20. Panasonic still sorting out the firmware on the G9 ii?
These are editing errors. Could be caused by Resolve. I've seen stuff like this pop up. I fix it by exporting to h.265 rather than h.264, but there's other errors that are just bad editing mistakes, too.
Some of the nicest rendering I have ever seen. I used to own the Sony 135mm f1.8 GM. It was super sharp but I didn't like the rendering at all. Flat and clinical. It seems totally different here. As a side comment, it's time to let go of the non sensical idea that linear motors result in faster focusing lenses than stepper motors. It depends on the actual type of motors and on the construction of the lens.
I have always thought the Sigma 135 had a nicer look to the images than the Sony 135GM. and now I think the newest Samyang 135 might be the best out there for Sony. the main thing the Sony is best at is focusing speed, and sharpness only by a hair. but not with the overall look of the images it creates. same with the Sony 24/70 GMll according to some people who own it. this new Nikon has a nice look to it. but between the heavier lens and heavier camera. its not for me. and there's also the price.
@@jaegerschtulmann can someone explain what rendering means if you shoot raw? I think If all 135/1.8s were put to a blind test with edited images non of those "this has best rendering" people would guess right. And further more, no client cares.
@@sulev111It is subjective bs, basically. There no such thing as objective better rendering. Also complaining over a lens being cynical, it’s cynical because it has little flaws. That’s the effect limited flaws have in rendering.
This is my favorite focal length and would be a compelling lens to get me to move to Nikon. The minimum focus distance is also impressive for a lens of this length considering that my Canon EF 135 f/2 has a minimum focusing distance of more than twice this at .9 meters. With as sharp as this lens appeared in this video, I honestly had to wonder if Zeiss is not making this lens under contract for Nikon!
Thanks for the review! You guys have a similar setup to me with a Z8 and FJ200 strobes. I may consider this lens when it's available (or at least rent it first).
@@mikni4069 like newer lenses typically do, the canon 135 improved on the Sony in a few aspects: image stabilization, smoother bokeh transitions / less flat looking images (subjective) and more even sharpness across the frame.
@@livejames9374 More even sharpness the 135gm is the only one that passed a 100lm/mm it is one of the only primes under long tele that ever achieved that performance. So I doubt that very much, the Canon suffer from more textured and onion ring bokeh and can have CA around the edge. The better transition well I must say I question that one as well, certainly not something I seen proof off. Cynical/flat is a consequence of more even sharpness/contrast and low level of aberration issues and flaws that is generally the consequence of that. Even this Nikon look a bit “flat”
The question I have in my mind is why you would choose this over the Sigma Art 135mm for Nikon F-mount, adapted. They're both: Very sharp... stepper-motor, not a quicker linear motor... very low vignetting... Big... heavy... same 82mm filter thread... the only difference/advantage I've noticed is that there's maybe a little less cats-eye bokeh in the corners at maximum aperture. And the Nikon is maybe a bit lighter - but still not 'light'. If it were lighter still, or if the autofocus were linear and lightning-fast and flawless like the Sony GM 135, I'd see it more. But it's a slightly marginal argument for this considering the price of this new Nikon... which will be?... a lot more than either a new, or (readily available) used Sigma Art 135, I'm thinking. Happy to be corrected
Oversized imagine circle for 500 bucks more than the similar first party competitors. That's should mean better iq over all that you already mentioned. Is it worth it? Well, not having to put up with adapters might be for many people. It is not like noct expensive so probably will be extremely popular lens. Clearly if your goal is to save money, there is always cheaper by someone selling you one compromise after the next. Stop at whatever price you can afford
Is it possible for mirrorless lenses to be designed with size in mind like the rangefinder lenses? I always thought it was the mirror and lens flange distance that made the SLR lens designs to be large
Not really. Physics. I mean you can make them a bit smaller but you would have to correct a lot of flaws with software. It's the same in every system. Some are bigger, some smaller, but they are all bulky. I am talking about full frame lenses of course.
The mirror determines how far the back element is from the sensor surface. The size of the mount allows for a bigger imaging circle and the angle of incidence of the light can be lower. Leica supposedly has to use different micro lenses at the edges of their sensors to compensate for the high angle of incidence many of those lenses produce. If you could make a curved sensor, you could design lenses for it that would have great edge performance with a smaller imaging circle.
Nikon could theoretically come out with a pancake lens for everything but the optical quality would be questionable Theoretically they could make a 35mm f1.4 summilux sized thing but itd probably be too flawed optically
My background is not photography so I'd like to know about the vignetting correction. Is it called over-framing, where the lense or aperture is larger than the sensor?
Great video. You captured some nice photos. Does Nikon include a free burro to pack the plena around? Honestly, I was more impressed by the colors from the G9 ii. I may need to do further research.
You couldn't have picked a better spot to test this new lens than in the Monterey/Carmel area. Sorry for the overcast but it's that same overcast that has given me some of my favorite shots of that famous shoreline. I'll be in some of those very same spots you shot from, again for the hundredth time, next week.
Hi , I like your films . I would like to purchase the Plane 135/1.8 But could not decide if I ll buy the 85 / 1.2 z mount I already have a 85 / 1.8 G ...F mount What is your advice ?
Great video guys, and amazing lens, appreciate the work getting these out. Also, in the podcast before the move there is a rather striking and huge photo of san fran. Jaron, did you take that pic?
Was a bit surprised that with a minimum focus distance of just 0.4m, the magnification ratio is so low. But in fact, Nikon site lists minimum focus distance at 0.82m and magnification ratio as 0.2. Sony and Samyang do a little better with the focusing distances of 0.7 and 0.69 m and magnification ratios of 0.25 and 0.24, respectively.
A great addition to the Z series lens lineup. I still use a DSLR and Nikon's equivalent is the 105mm f1.4E ED. insane Bocha and amazing sharpness with no falloff wide open! Nikon is flexing their mussels, who know what tomorrow brings!
I'm confused - what do you mean by there not being raw file support? I can understand that lens profiles may not yet be available, but why can't you edit the raw files out of the camera anyway? Does Nikon not want you doing this without the lens profile support to take care of vignetting, distortion, and chromatic aberrations? And with that in mind, is the camera already able to apply lens-specific corrections while processing the jpgs? If not, why wouldn't you edit from raw?
I bought a Noct earlier this year based on your review, and I guess now I have to buy a Plena. Though I was hoping the 135mm would have been a 1.2 lens.
Why bring what is a portrait lens to the coast and basically shoot seascape/landscape? In the end you did shoot a few portrait shots but would it not be better to shoot both outdoor and studio portraits and really test the lens? Just my thoughts...
Wow, I missed that thing with the Noct lens. I always thought this was just another ancient measurement unit 😅 Btw, how does this compare to the Fujinon 90 f2? It will be about a stop slower, but otherwise?
Bit of a scuffed export, it seems like. I counted four glitches, starting with 0:25 had a frame of static imported from the CRT times. Then at 2:33 another bit of static but this time for ears. Lastly some melting artifacts at 3:20 and 4:12. Nothing that would make the video unwatchable but something to look into, I think.
I wonder if it's smart to post podcast length videos to the same channel... I do podcasts when driving so get those in a different app, so the long videos just bung up the channel notifications!
I’m curious how this lens works as an Astrophotography lens? I use the Samyang 135mm, but it’s not adapted for the Zmount. Would love it if this lens will crush the astro side.
I gotta say, I’m really glad Nikon finally released something I’ve no interest in buying. If I’m gonna get a 135 I’ll get a 135 f/2 ais, get some extra character, and save myself $2k. I still want that 85mm f/1.2 though.
Someone suggested If you have a full frame camera put the 85mm 1.2 on and drop into DX crop mode and you'll have a decent idea of what 135mm 1.8 reach is like.
Honestly, while I would love to buy a Noct, the Plena is probably a much better fit for me and most people. 1/3 the price, 1/2 the weight, AF instead of MF, and equally shallow depth of field. It’s a pretty good price for everything you’re getting, and I would love to use this instead of my Z 70-200mm for a lot of things.
An amazing lens for sure ! Will perhaps be the best 135mm lens in many regards - I suppose Bokeh and Sharpness reach a fantastic balance here, and all with much less cats-eyes and probably amazing qualities for Astro as well. Only thing keeping me from buying : not even do I have a Nikon Z body ( 😆 ) which will be changed in the near future, and of course - the price ! Too much for just this very specific focal length for me !
Good for you. I suggest holding off on that change unless you have a lot of money to spare. Switching to Nikon Z from Sony out of brand-nostalgia is a decision I regret every time I go out to do some photography. Disappointing lack of variety (e.g. there are still no full-frame AF f1.4 lenses for Nikon Z without adapters), and outrageous prices as Nikon will not allow value-for-money third-party alternatives.

It should be great to compre photos between primes and the hyped tamron 135-150 f2-2.8… if possible! :)
3:21 what is that called? sometimes it happens to my videos regardless of temperature
Grateful for the early morning video drop/embargo lift. This review was the perfect thing to put my baby back to sleep 🎉
so excited to see more of what this lens brings! gunna be tough to decide to wait for this or the 35mm 1.2
Their is no 135 1.2 on the roadmap.
He means 35mm(Thirty five)
Sure, 35 or 135 cause focal length is overrated anyhow
@@ulimuller7892He may have the budget for only one to replace something else in his lineup. I do not think he thinks focal length is overrated.
Would really like to see a review on the viltrox 75mm f1.2....love you guys been following you from the early days! Keep up the great!!
😂
I have always thought the Sigma 135 had a nicer look to the images than the Sony 135GM. and now I think the newest Samyang 135 might be the best out there for Sony. the main thing the Sony is best at is focusing speed, and sharpness only by a hair. but not with the overall look of the images it creates. same with the Sony 24/70 GMll according to some people who own it. this new Nikon has a nice look to it. but between the heavier lens and heavier camera. its not for me. and there's also the price.
Agreed, although both canon and Sony options are good lenses this clearly renders better than the comp. Well done Nikon
With as sharp as this lens appeared in this video, I honestly had to wonder if Zeiss is not making this lens under contract for Nikon!
unforunately zeiss is out of the photography lens game now. cinema and scientific only now
I would actually argue that Zeiss still makes glass for Sony under contract rebranded as G-Master.
Canon makes a virtually identical 135 for RF.
give it to nikon that they KNOW how to make great lens too…
@@youknowwho9247 canon version is this plus some extras… catseye and vignetting.
Just clicked on DPReview video, and I've forgot that you don't work there anymore.
Anyhow went right on to find you. Looking forward to this lens!
Thanks for the review! You guys have a similar setup to me with a Z8 and FJ200 strobes. I may consider this lens when it's available (or at least rent it first).
Nice looking lens. Curious how it compares to the Sony 135/GM, which in my opinion has been the 135 standard (although the Canon is equally excellent)
Canon's 135 rf is the pinnacle
@@mbismbismbNo it really isn’t, it’s no better then the Sony at all.
@@mikni4069 learn to write correctly please... rf 135mm is still the best 135mm
The question I have in my mind is why you would choose this over the Sigma Art 135mm for Nikon F-mount, adapted.
They're both:
Very sharp... stepper-motor, not a quicker linear motor... very low vignetting... Big... heavy... same 82mm filter thread...
the only difference/advantage I've noticed is that there's maybe a little less cats-eye bokeh in the corners at maximum aperture.
3:05, you don't need raw, you can disable vignette correction: photo shooting menu > Vignette Control > [Off]
Nice lens. What’s that odd pink blob around your left arm at around 3:22?
Nikon could theoretically come out with a pancake lens for everything but the optical quality would be questionable
Theoretically they could make a 35mm f1.4 summilux sized thing but itd probably be too flawed optically
Another beautiful lens that I don't have a body for. :D
Yeah! I leave it up to the Nikonnians :D
This lens and your presentation ... a perfect 10 !
Some weird stuff in this video. Audio issue early on and video issue around 4:13. Great video as always, just usually don’t see that stuff in them.
You couldn't have picked a better spot to test this new lens than in the Monterey/Carmel area. Sorry for the overcast but it's that same overcast that has given me some of my favorite shots of that famous shoreline. I'll be in some of those very same spots you shot from, again for the hundredth time, next week.
Lets make a 4 way 135mm F1.8 comparison!!!! (samyang AF135 FE, sony 135 GM, canon RF 135L and nikkor Z 135 S Plena)
I miss the days when they made 135mm f2.8 nice and small.
Is capability of reading / processing a RAW output file dependent on released LENS support ? Please enlighten me.
Lots of editing glitches in this video. Sound spiked, digitalization. Chris turns into a white screen at one point. What’s up?
such a beautiful shots. funus at f1.8 and people at 5.6 with blown out highlights .. loved it
Hi ,
I like your films .
I would like to purchase the Plane 135/1.8
But could not decide if I ll buy the
85 / 1.2 z mount
I already have a 85 / 1.8 G ...F mount
What is your advice ?
Hell of a lens.. definitely gonna buy this. So impressive, kudos Nikon❤❤🎉💥🇮🇳🙏🙏
Currently carry the Z9 and 85 1.2. It’s. Magic. And I have the old flagship 135 f2. Consider me drooling over the Z 🤤
I'd like to know how it compares to the F mount verzion interms of sharpness, bokeh and af speed. Thanks guys for the awesome content!
Great video guys, and amazing lens, appreciate the work getting these out.
Also, in the podcast before the move there is a rather striking and huge photo of san fran. Jaron, did you take that pic?
2:33 what's that noise?
Was a bit surprised that with a minimum focus distance of just 0.4m, the magnification ratio is so low. But in fact, Nikon site lists minimum focus distance at 0.82m and magnification ratio as 0.2. Sony and Samyang do a little better with the focusing distances of 0.7 and 0.69 m and magnification ratios of 0.25 and 0.24, respectively.
What lens did you use on Panasonic G9II for this video? I like the bokeh rendering.
A great addition to the Z series lens lineup. I still use a DSLR and Nikon's equivalent is the 105mm f1.4E ED. insane Bocha and amazing sharpness with no falloff wide open!
Nikon is flexing their mussels, who know what tomorrow brings!
It will be an absolute portrait monster. Any info on pricing yet?
Roughly 2400-2600 USD
I'm confused - what do you mean by there not being raw file support? I can understand that lens profiles may not yet be available, but why can't you edit the raw files out of the camera anyway? Does Nikon not want you doing this without the lens profile support to take care of vignetting, distortion, and chromatic aberrations? And with that in mind, is the camera already able to apply lens-specific corrections while processing the jpgs? If not, why wouldn't you edit from raw?
it's the stance that really makes the image shine @5:35 haha
Nikon and L-Mount are the best systems in the price / quality ratio now.
Wonder if they'll release a cheaper version of this and if it'll also be f/1.8
I guess it depends on tamron, since tamron makes cheap versions of the lenses for Nikon
With a stepping motor on this one, I doubt they will come with cheaper version. Maybe tamron or Sigma does but with linear motors 😅
Love the samyang version on the Sony. Super cheap and superb performance.
Good job - nice lens, but is plena a one off or a series?
Seems like a series that will make use of the wide mount with larger image circle.
Hold a piece of card up behind the rear of the lens and you will be able to see exactly how big the image circle is!
I always thought this was just another ancient measurement unit 😅
Btw, how does this compare to the Fujinon 90 f2?
Wonder if we'll see a Nikon 200mm F2 Plena in future. 🤔
hi. do i buy d850 or go mirrorless to z6or Z7? cant afford z8 or z9
Good morning from Poland. This is probably another example from a marketing textbook. The name justifies the exceptional price.
I gotta say, I’m really glad Nikon finally released something I’ve no interest in buying. If I’m gonna get a 135 I’ll get a 135 f/2 ais, get some extra character, and save myself $2k.
I still want that 85mm f/1.2 though.
Someone suggested
If you have a full frame camera put the 85mm 1.2 on and drop into DX crop mode and you'll have a decent idea of what 135mm 1.8 reach is like.
6:38 am, just finished astrophotography and still, before going to sleep I'm watching this
Will we see a successor to the 200mm f/2 F-mount lenses in Z-mount?
An amazing lens for sure ! Will perhaps be the best 135mm lens in many regards - I suppose Bokeh and Sharpness reach a fantastic balance here, and all with much less cats-eyes and probably amazing qualities for Astro as well.
Only thing keeping me from buying : not even do I have a Nikon Z body ( 😆 ) which will be changed in the near future, and of course -
the price !
@@KK-fi6ms1.4 lenses are dead. Canon moved on.. Sony is trying. 1.2 is the new 1.4, and 1.8 is the old 1.4. The z 1.8 lenses are basically better than 1.4 f mount.
@@cmdrls212 1.4 is the sweet spot between 1.8 and 1.2. Much less expensive and portable than 1.2, and better bokeh than 1.8 without being much larger.
The only reason they are "moving on" is because they know the sheep will pay more for less.
@@cmdrls212 I think 1.4 lenses are about to populate Nikon’s roadmap. There’s a $1500-2000 gap between 1.8 and 1.2 that can be filled. At the end of the day, they are looking to make $$$
