      @@MattIrwinPhotography Yes Matt, as you say - its all about the Z mount - this is what Nikon said right at the beginning when they introduced the Z6/7 - it just did not make immediate sense as they also released a 35 and 50 1.8, which did not seem special at the time - until we started using these lenses. And now, here we are - Nikon using the advantages of the mount to make optics that are NOT possible from other manufacturers - Z continues to gain in strength and momentum as the other brands begin to plateau (especially with respect to lens design) - I think this is a trend that will continue well into the future.

I ream way back i when I was at school on of the maester/teachers let be there zenth and their 135mm telephoto lens to go birding with. How disappointed with its reach then but that was back it the 1970's. How this 135mm lens very interesting portrait and studio lens. This may well be a next level lens and should have a place in any studio/portrait photographers bag, but just for me I am more that happy with my 85mm f1.2 lens. I would like to see one and get my hands on one. So good the hear you, keep well, keep safe and enjoy the great kit.

    What a splendid lens! $2499 USD, less than the 85/1.2!
    I do hope in your in-depth video you have comparisons to the 85/1.2, many of us are wondering how much difference there is, aside from the obvious focal length. Some of us are running the excellent Sigma Art 135/1.8 with an FTZ. Obviously won't be able to match the bokeh to the corners, even if mounted on a native F-mount full frame, but otherwise wonder how they would compare.
    It would probably be overwhelming, but the Nikon and Sigma Art 105 1.4's are also in that neighborhood, so many fine optics...
    One question many of us now have is pick up the new Plena or the new Zf, or see what magic appears in the forthcoming Nikon 35 1.2? Will it also be a Plena???
    Looking forward yo your review!

    135 is a focal length that hasn't gotten much love since the 80's. The 70/80-200 f2.8 zooms became popular and common and reduced the need for the once common 135/2.8 prime that so many people had with their 35mm film cameras.
    There was a fast Ai version, and the only autofocus version i recall was the AF DC-Nikkor. The DC was a stuning performer but not intuitive to use, and most people didn't get on with it well. If you did click with it, the results were otherworldly and difficult to duplicate with any other lens i ever used. This new Plena variant introduces both the dual motors so close range correction can work in a non-linear fashion, and adding the most recent exotic glass formulae and optical formulae eliminates the need for the poorly named "defocus control" that was a manually controlled correction feature for that chromatic aberration issue that all fast prime lenses are prone to. This is a remarkable achievement by nikon, and i have to appreciate it, but that cost is definitely outside my budget.

    Wow, beauty! I refuse to 'pre order' anything (or give any credence to a 'shipping on' date from Nikon) ever again, however, so I'll need to wait for 2025 for this lens, surely LOL Can't wait to live vicariously through your video when you shoot with this lens! Cheers.

    Certainly appears to be a beautiful lens. Due to my use case, I use mostly zoom lenses and sold my quite lovely Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z9 and sold the equally stellar Sigma 40mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z8. But, given the wonderful Z lenses that I've acquired, I must admit looking longingly at the Nikon Z 50mm f1.2, the Z 85mm f1.2 and now the 135mm f1.8. Well done, Nikon!!

    Hi Matt, i think getting the 135mm f/1.8 PLENA is a smart idea for the Z mount people who wants a 135mm and also dreaming about a getting much larger, heavier, pricier Nikon F 200mm f/2.
    On Crop mode and DX Z cameras, this lens is ideally a 200mm f/1.8 with high-end glass and coating.

    Personally, I think Nikon are happy that theyve nearly completed the lens roadmap, and now they can start to experiment. The essentials are there for it to be a credible system, hopefully these special lenses can be the things that draw new people in

    Definitely an interesting lens. But also confusing... why make this the "Plena" lens? Are they going to remake any of the other primes as "Plena?" Are they setting up for a larger sensor?

    • @ElectroTone
      @ElectroTone 10 месяцев назад

      Matt mentions the answer to this in the video. 'Plena' lenses are those 'Exotics' designs, which can _only_ exist in the Nikon Z system. This due to the larger diameter and close distance to the focal plane of the Z mount. IE. one cannot physically squeeze the same level of performance/specifications into any other FF camera system in existence. So Canon, Sony et al. won't be able to make a comparable lens without changing their lens mounts.

      @@ElectroToneCanon could do the same. The RF mount is only 1mm narrower than the Z mount.

    Glove the snow as always matt,I've always said like for like 135mm vs 85mm the 135 is more flattering for portraits, however I'll not be buying this lens,90% of shooters cannot afford £300]-4000 on each lens, nikon is turning into exotic lens collection and designing for the pro field consistently, why can Nikon release 2 lenses at the same Mm the PRO and standard? I didn't move to the Z brand to then have to shell out $30,000-60,000,if nikon had told me this I'd never moved from the DSLR.....I want this 135 more than any lens

      I think it's time to look around at the likes of viltrox etc. They are producing very good lens at affordable prices. It is a bit frustrating when we see lens only for the .1% of photographers, but at least they are not blocking those other brands like Canon is doing.

    • @michael-masi-2021

      $30,000-$60,000 would buy you every single lens made by Nikon for the Z mount. If you're trying to own every lens they make then you're a studio filled with pros, not a pro or an amateur.
      My bag is
      Z8/Z9
      40mm f/2.0
      85mm f/1.2 S
      105mm f/2.8 S (for sale now)
      135mm f/1.8 Plena (soon)
      400mm f/4.5 S
      And I'll probably add a 35-150mm 2.0-2.8
      Not even close to $30k and you can replace the Z8/Z9 with a pair of ZF really.

    • @romanpul
      @romanpul 10 месяцев назад +1

      Nikon made a lot of more affordable lenses very early on for the Z mount. The 85mm f/1.8 is an extremely capable portrait lens. Those bigger primes are just the icing on the cake. And even a non-Plena version of this lens would still be pretty expensive.

      @@michael-masi-2021 I was Referring to buying camera n lenses not just lenses or camera,,two cameras as most did on DSLR, and then the trinity lenses and then all the specialist glass on top,just under $10,000 for Z9+Z8 then price in the trinity glass then and so on,for me to replace all my wedding glass minimum + cameras 25,000, or wildlife n sports still £25,000 minimum $30.000, that's a lot of brass to throw into a new system and this doesn't include extra special glass that i would like
