    Episode 2 of the: What/Why I Think Series
    So, many people believe that based on my negative opinions about many of the trendy deathcore band's albums, that I hate the subgenre completely. That's not true, but instead of being a dick about it (I can do that if you want me to) here's some reasons that I think people either love or loathe the buzz-worthy subgenre, and also, why I think its starting to fade.

    One of the reason us metal heads don't like deathcore is due to the fact that a large number of deathcore bands have a generic, overly simple sound. To me, low guitars played constant at 1 second intervals is boring, which a lot of deathcore bands have. Also, many of deathcore bands depend on generic breakdowns to get people to mosh or make the song exciting.

      But that's the minority though. There are great Deathcore bands without those one second chords.

      the vocals are what turn me off..I like death metal vocals but the way deathCORE bands do it is a lot different even if they're both extreme vocals! I even like black metal vocals better than deathcore or djent vocals. It's like they're whining and growling at the same time

    I'm not really big into Deathcore, but I can still respect Deathcore bands for making music they love. I saw Bleed from Within supporting Amon Amarth, and quite a few people rolled their eyes without much caring for it. The band made it pretty clear they were aware of their mixed reception, but thanked everyone for staying there and watching them anyway.
    And honestly, I respct them for that. They were having fun with it, some people liked it, and so it all worked out in the end.

    I used to be a fan of deathcore until I realized how amazing, soulful and powerful death metal is. I mean, there *are* a few good deathcore/mealcore bands (Whitechapel, TAIM, Rings of Saturn, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, After The Burial, Volumes, and The Contortionist to name a few), and some boring death metal bands, but it's generally the other way around. I now am getting into a lot of technical and melodic death metal.
    When I listen to a song by Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Arch Enemy, Exodus, DragonForce, or a band of the sort, I feel this powerful sense of energy. Death metal is probably the best genre of music in existence because it has so much soul and feel to it. Deathcore, on the other hand, has no soul or feel. It literally sounds like it was written by a computer or something. Yeah, it has a heavy sound, and sometimes makes me want to headbang, but there's really nothing to it other than a heavy sound.
    InfidelAmsterdam made a good analogy in one of his videos: Death metal is like a strong beer, hardcore punk is like an energy drink; they can both be good, and they both serve their own purposes, but when they're mixed together… not so much.

      +DeathCrackle To me, deathcore is death metal without everything i like in death metal. Sure there are the exceptions(btbam taim), but for the most part it sounds like teenage death metal. Its often produced to the point where there is no more animalistic feel to it, or soul. This would be fine if it was melodic or proggy(see btbam), but it trys to be heavy and destructive and it just doesn't work for me. The musicality also isn't quite with death metal. Its soulless, and not in a good way.

      naw DRI are awesome and bands like Municpal Waste are Decent..so mixing hardcore and metal can work, but its more from the "Crossover" genre that kick ass (or classic Suicidal Tendencies). Modern "Metalcore" not so much

      Yeah, Death Metal is SO Damn Soulful. Not saying that Deathcore is, although I'd prefer Death Metal over Deathcore if I have to, but I don't find these genres to be 'soulful' unless they are Melodic and have comprehensible unclean vocals. In their purest forms, (Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary, Suicide Silence, Thy Art Is Murder, Carnifex etc) they both sound Powerful, Cold and Bestial. On the other hand, traditional Metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Metallica and Megadeth sound 'Soulful' and Powerful, unlike the former.

    I don't hate deathcore. In fact, I owe it a lot. If it wasn't for deathcore, I wouldn't be listening to bands like cannibal corpse, death, morbid angel, aborted, opeth, job for a cowboy and death metal in general.(other metal genres aswell) In my opinion, deathcore is kinda a phase that goes through a metalhead (not everyone) that afterwards makes you want to explore more and go deeper into the genre. I might agree that the music itself in deathcore isn't that much of a big deal but it's important that it stays because it gives you that feel that it's the heaviest shit around and then you realize that that there's even heavier stuff than that. (See where I'm going?) I actually still have some suicide silence and whitechapel tracks on my mp3 just because it makes me laugh that I thought it was heavy back then when I listen to it. To anyone who's in that phase, enjoy. It will regard you later. (;

    years ago i was a deathcore/metalcore kid, but then i really got into death metal and black metal, which lead me to power metal and the more progressive black and death stuff bringing me into a lot of other subgenres.. i started collecting vintage metal albums and shirts from bands like entombed and bathory. i listen and find new metal "not fuckin nu metal" everyday, i have to thank deathcore for bringing me into metal although ive lost interest in it. another topic i saw jeff from carcass at the airport monday:) got a picture... really nice guy!!

    What scene is going to rise you ask? DJENT

    • @Prenihility
      @Prenihility 10 лет назад +3

      It really seems at some point (especially given its rise in popularity) that Djent is simply the latest trend. But... it's so much more. I think Djent is actually A LOT OF THINGS. But it's already getting over-saturated with generic bands that sound like copies of each other. I think the main problem with Djent comes with that term itself, and what it means, and to what degree you can define a band as "Djent". Ever since its rise in the late 2000s, i've fallen in love with it. But, anywho.. i've interpreted Djent in a completely different way. I see it as a reminder. A reminder to every Metal fan of what the signature Heavy Metal sound consists of - as well as the composition that's closely associated with Metal.
      And at the end of the day, when we're strictly talking about names here, i think Djent ultimately covers a broad range of Metal subgenres. Mostly - if not completely, Progressive Metal of all sorts. A lot of Post Rock-blended Metal in there as well. But i definitely think people should look at it in a more broad sense than "oh, yeah... pfft, it's the new trend in Metal". Totally wrong... Because it's so much more. It's just the rapid rate at which the scene has become oversaturated that has made it seem stale even now. After such a short period of time. Djent is phenomenal. But history is repeating itself. How many Djent bands are out there who's musical composition consists of pathetic, shitty-ass, generic cookie-monster vocals that you'd hear in a typical Deathcore band? Coupled with sharp, fast riffs and chugs? So many, i wouldn't be able to keep track of that shit. Djent is a phenomenal movement (something i'd rather refer to it as), but there will ALWAYS be an influx of cookie-cutter bands who imitate each other when something gains momentum. I just ignore those bands, and choose to listen to Animals as Leaders, Omertah, Cloudkicker, etc.

    • @Giraphery
      @Giraphery 10 лет назад +1

      I think you're overthinking it a little. Yeah, there are copycats, but thats in very single genre of music. That doesn't mean metal is any less awesome. Some people hate on me for referring to a band as a "djent band," and to those peole I say this: is it easier to call a band "djent," or "polyrhythmic progressive metal with influences of death metal and melodic death metal?"

    • @Prenihility

    As a lover of many metal genres (traditional,, thrash, nu-metal, metalcore), I've found myself just being aggravated by deathcore people because that's the only metal they know. Sure, it's different from the typical person who owns one Metallica shirt and believes that makes them a metalhead. There's just different kinds of posers, I'd say.

I'd stay clear of Modern BDM and Slam for now; until you get used to a regular death growl I don't think hearing pig squeals and basement gutturals will help at all. Plus Chuck, John, David, and Martin all have very recognizable vocals that make listening to their bands all the more fun :) I hope you find joy in this wonderful genre of metal.

      If you want a gateway band, look into the more melodic stuff from Sweden, like Scar Symmetry or Dark Tranquillity or At The Gates. Then, try moving into the more traditional stuff like Death, Obituary, and Morbid Angel. Finally, if you can get past that, go into the brutal stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, Cryptopsy, and Suffocation, And remember, even if you can't get into the melodic stuff, you shouldn't feel obligated to listen to death metal just because it's the norm. Only go into something if you really want to. Hope this helped.

    I am an avid fan of many types of heavy metal. It would be greatly appreciated that you review the 2012 album "The Palpable Leprosy of Pollution" by Infant Annihilator. what sealed DEathcore's fate for me was when my band was playing a show in a city right by ours and every other band on the bill was deathcore we were a thrash act. now our drummer was really into the genre so he was really excited about it. I can't pin point it all to one thing that killed it for me. it was the karate kicks, the ego risers, the running in place, the crab core headbanging, it just didn't FEEL like a metal show to me. I have since become a bit of a fan of some songs by WHITECHAPEL and the like but only certain tracks. it was also just the fact that even though there were 5 bands on the bill all the bands besides us all sounded the same. I felt like I heard the same breakdown riff multiple times in every song that was played I felt let down that there wasn't any real creativity in it.
    I don't hate it, I don't like it, and don't listen to it.

    I'm not a "metalhead" by no means; I listen to a lot of pop-punk, indie-rock, pop, R&B, and stuff like that, but I love deathcore. I used to listen to it a lot when I was younger, but stopped. I used to love it, and now I'm revisiting it. I love it again, frankly. I'm sure I'd be called a "poser" if I told a "real metal" this, but the biggest reason why I do like is because it's so different from what I listen to. I do listen to some prog-metal, so I thought your comment about a prog-metal fan not digging growls was sort of funny, because I like both, and that's also possible. I'm definitely happy to see this video, though, since I never quite got the hate for deathcore, or at least, most people hate it blindly, or let a few bands let them dislike it. For instance, I really hate bands like Emmure and Attila, but that's not what the whole genre is composed of. And so if you think that's all the genre is, you really should look more into it.

My favorite thing in the world is to run into a fellow metal head stranger out and about, and getting caught up discussing music and sharing the shit we like. Actually it's alot more simple than you think. Some people think slower=heavier. They don't think the fast picking and blasting and soloing sound as heavy as slow chugging and breakdowns. Alot of fans of hardcore think this way, and when they hear it in the vein of metal they go crazy. To them, that's heavy. I for one see the great in both styles. Oceano, early Whitechapel, early Carnifex, Infant annihilator, angelmaker, fit for an autopsy...there are some good bands in the genre IF you listen to it for what it is, and not what your linear expectations are for what it should be.

    This is gonna sound clichéd, but almost every musical subgenre has both it's ups and downs. The same reasoning applies to deathcore. There are the good deathcore bands (Carnifex, Whitechapel, The Red Chord, Arsonists Get All The Girls, The Faceless, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, Despised Icon, ALL SHALL PERISH), and shit deathcore bands (Chelsea Grin, Oceano, Emmure, We Butter The Bread With Butter, The Bunny The Bear, As Blood Runs Black, Wanking The Cadaver). There are bands that have drastically improved over time (Bring Me The Horizon, Job For A Cowboy, Carnifex), and bands that have declined in quality (Suicide Silence, As Blood Runs Black, The Acacia Strain). In the end, it's all about recognizing the fact that deathcore, while controversial, IS metal. It's only a trend, but it's still metal. It's doomed to die out like glam, nu metal, and metalcore, but it's still metal.

    I have been listening to metal since I was 11 years old and I'm 21 now. I started with bands like Pantera, Opeth, Anthrax, and Lamb of God a little later (just a few for example). I enjoy almost every kind of metal Death, Black, Prog, Sludge, Stoner, AND Deathcore!! To everyone saying its generic and stale, that's a statement that can encompass every genre because sometimes bands sound the same, it happens because there are a number of strait death metal bands I find very boring, same goes for black and every other genre. There are bands I love and bands I hate in Deathcore just like every other genre for ex. I love Thy Art is Murder, Make Them Suffer, Whitechapel, Oceano, Carnifex and All Shall Perish. As I loved those bands I find bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Emmure, and Asking Alexandria to be extremely boring in my opinion and their fans are really annoying. I will stick up for this genre because this is a stupid argument, metal is metal, a band is a band, don't judge it on its genre because you're making everyone who loves metal look bad by fighting like children, fuck. If you argue and bitch "this isn't metal, its destroying metal, blah blah blah" then YOU are NOT a metal head, and YOU are destroying metal

    I hate deathcore for a few reasons. First, the fans "scene" kids and the other bull crap people who think that they are br00tal. Second, the musicians-people who brag that they can play when they play open strings on a 8 string guitars and endless brakedowns. Third the pretention that deathcore is death metal. Total bullshit.

    I've went over with this many times with many people already. I don't like it, tried to have an open mind about it. I didn't like the mainstream ones, tried to listen to a lot of underground. Still no effect, another reason is because of the image portrayed by the bands (Yes I went there). It's hard to take any of them seriously with how they look. The music doesn't sound great either, the breakdowns are a lot of the time predictable and bland. Final reason is because I don't like how the vocals sound at all (It makes me cringe), doesn't appeal to me at all sorry. I know there's better stuff out there so there's no point for me to listen to death core or metal core. The only "core" stuff I listen is old hard core and grind core. I live in MA and there's metal core and death core bands everywhere. I could go into greater detail about this, but I getting tired of explaining. Point is... for any of you that like it good for you, but I'll just stick with what I like.

    i've listened to metal/hard rock all my life... i love lamb of god, slipknot, stone sour and many others. killswitch, seether, manson. Shadows fall is awesome... the majority of these death metal/core metals i initially liked... but that was short lived. Here's why... i don't find the songwriting very intriguing. hate to say it... but it sounds like "a bunch of noise"... ouch. i hate saying that about metal as a devout fan of heavy music.. but straight up. many of these bands are not vocally intriguing or versatile.
    musically... sometimes i can still get down with it... but many times the musical intricacy seems very forced. i still respect the skill involved however it doesn't really stick in my head.. I was a fan of classic rock before I wondered into metal. While i Love hardcore singers who scream and stuff... at the end of the day... it is a song... and it seems there's a huge trend right now of singers who don't actually sing... :-/

    When it comes to Deathcore, the only band I'm loving at the moment is Thy Art Is Murder. The lyrics they write are very powerful takes on society...beyond standard, and the music itself is quite interesting. Though I've only listened to some parts of Hate and Holy War, I enjoy them as a casual listen, I'm more of a Sludge/Doom/Groove guy myself, with a light listen on some Thrash and Death and various Punk bands on the sidelines. I don't hate Deathcore, it's just an acquired taste, some people like the taste and some people don't I guess.

    • @olivercadman9035
      @olivercadman9035 8 лет назад +1

      Their lyrics are controversial for sure, taking Holy War for example, many songs on that album really do strike a nerve...Naked and Cold has some deep thinking too, I was gutted when CJ left the band recently, he's up there with Glenn Benton and Barney Greenway when it comes to his vocals...

    • @IAmWhoTheGodsDetest
      @IAmWhoTheGodsDetest 8 лет назад

      Listen to their album The Adversary if you haven't already. While the lyrics aren't as powerful and controversial, the vocals and instrumentals are much more brutal, technical and fast. Definitely their best album imo.

    • @olivercadman9035
      @olivercadman9035 8 лет назад

      IAmWhoTheGodsDetest I've listened to The Adversary! Definitely their best album, I think it's often forgotten about though, Infinite Death and Hate seem to get the most exposure, even though The Adversary seems to have cleaner production and far better musicianship, I like the brutal tech death influence going on, they were definitely inspired by Suffocation during the making of that album, Hate went off in a bit of a Deathcore route and is a bit more chuggy, but with Holy War everything comes together from their past albums and they have this blackened death metal (almost like Behemoth) tinge to their sound.

    I 1000% agree with your statements! My 2 cents on why I don't like deathcore: 1.) All these bands play 8 or 9 string guitars in Drop Z and only play the lowest string. I don't understand the musicality of that. 2.) The vocals of "bree-bree reeeeeeeee". Again, that's not musical and it's get's fatiguing on me fast as a listener. I'll go the farm if I wanna hear pigs. 3.) Every band and fan in Deathcore is overly concerned with brutality and which band is more brutal than the other. Who cares? We as musicians and fans have to stop worrying about which band is more brutal or better or even in classifying ourselves as a brutal person. Webster's dictionary online says that brutal can either mean cruel, harsh/severe and very bad or unpleasant. Harsh in sound sure. But are any metal or rock bands trying to be very bad or unpleasant? Brutality is not a very good term to describe music in general. Tyrannical dictators and armies can be brutal, not music.

      probably because there are a lot of good bands in the death metal genre coming out that are better than deathcore. I like the band Whsipered for example (sort of newish but not brand new ill admit). Deathcore bands dont seem like they have the metal background, much like core bands dont. They're more like skater preps who were into hardcore THEN got into metal later, its kind of a class thing. More middle class/upper middle class suburban white dudes into core, and metal dudes are more from working class. It may sound bullshit but it seems to bear some reality, even if its not always reality. Deathcore is annoying, the growling sounds more like whining or core does in general, and death metal sounds like a demon..as for the ORIGINAL punk hardcore bands, I love those (black flag, DRI, etc). So its nothing to do with mixing hardcore and metal, but its just the ways that many of the metalcore bands do it gets annoying. Not to mention those pop punk commercial sounding "clean" vocals some of those bands do, or djent bands like Periphery do. Its not like we want a Halford or Dio all the time, but I'd settle for Devin Townsend as far as good clean vocals go

    I think deathcore has died a long time ago. Today's "deathcore" bands are either death metal bands with occasional breakdowns or just breakdown only bands like Traitors and Black Tongue. To me deathcore is stuff like Knights Of The Abyss, Salt The Wound, The Irish Front, With Dead Hands Rising, Elysia, On Solid Ground, Misericordiam, and We Are The End. It is really hard to find bands similar to those nowadays. It was easy back then but not today... And it's a shame that the Arizona deathcore scene had died.

    I personally detest metalcore vocals because they sound like a combination betweeb a punk-rocker who is extra loud and annoying and a goat.
    Also the breakdowns slows down the song and for some WEIRD reason reminds me of dubsteb.
    I would personally recomend Incnatation, drawn and quatered, Morbid angel, Autopsy, nile and many other good death metal bands as well as technica death metal.

    People keep trying to compare maiden and Metallica and older metal bands to new bands and new genres. they're totally different styles of music with similar instruments if it's not ur taste leave it alone.. yeah there is some absolute shit death core bands (Attila) but there are some bands that take that same energy and add a lot of effort into it to make it different. They're different styles ( listen to ingested) and they should not be compared it's like comparing iggy azalea to the wu tang clan they're the same overall genre but totally different with different fans you all look stupid

    Why I hate it? Guitar playing is beyond bland, down tuned guitars cannot even be eligible, vocals are too guttural and there is a complete void in melody of what I've heard

    My personal favorite genres of metal have to be thrash metal and NWOBHM I have to say I absolutely hate deathcore and metal core it never caught my eye not like thrash did, you want metal listen to some 80s thrash and NWOBHM if it wasn't for NWOBHM and then thrash you wouldn't have these two sub par genres of core metal

      Hey guess what? Just because a band was there first it's not automatically better

      Well have you ever listened to them? The old school ones I'm sure if I had a vote for which is better I'm sure most would choose the old school cause the old school had meaning and actually creative riffs/ solos all deathcore is are breakdowns it is uninteresting and takes no talent or skill to breakdown any band can do it.

      Terry McGinnis You're probably only listening to the over generic chugfest deathcore but if you dig a bit deeper you'll find some pretty interesting stuff

      I understand but deathcore isn't my type thrash metal is my main genre they're so many great thrash bands

      +Terry McGinnis aside from the genre argument if you're going to argue music died after the 80s you better be in your 40s or older because if you're young you need to get out more explore more and listen to some new music go to some shows that aren't $200 a ticket where the band actually plays more than 10 shows on a tour and are in their prime stand in the pit and experience something fresh grow some balls and tell your dad you want your own taste in music
      p.s most deathcore sucks

    I really hate a lot of deathcore because the songs are all just one long break down. Some of it is okay. I like Carnifex for example. But I'd much rather listen to some tech death.
