@@jamiebelle9609As Michael Jackson didn’t write PYT, he may not have heard the song that has a similar bass line as, that’s something for Quincy Jones to answer as he co-wrote the the song.
When an artist works with the same producers and musicians that other artists use, you will have similar sounding songs. I’ll give you another example is you haven’t used it already “Boogie Nights” by Heatwave and “ Off the Wall” by Michael Jackson. Every genre of music does it but not many people consciously hear the similarities. Most music fans favorite songs are produced by the same person or persons but performed by different artists but they don’t realize the connection to the producer (s).
It’s amazing how Michael gets accused of ripping off certain songs when in fact he’s not the main producer nor is he in charge. That would be Quincy. He has the final say in what makes the album, simple as that. In an interview years ago someone brought up the Donna Summer record and he blamed Michael for that bass line
Per Jackson’s contract he had full creative control and was listed as co-producer on the album and all of the songs. Meaning Jackson, not Jones had final say.

I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm an artist (drawing) and I've always remained purposely ignorant to music production bc of my fear of being too analytical and getting too deep into what makes something "sound good" to me. You go into great detail without getting too technical (even though you could) and I appreciate that as a viewer. Subscribed.
Quincy's productions always have series' of signature sounds. Like literal signatures, just notice "smooth criminal" riffs around the chorus, compared to "ya mo be there" and a similar sound in the movie soundtrack of the Wiz. i wouldnt consider it stealing if he is working with the production team.
Wait, so your accusing Michael of stealing a song that he didn't write? At least he wrote Billie Jean which you made your argument for him ripping off from Hall & Oats whether that argument is valid or not...at least he wrote the song in question. But now it seems like you're just making a general narrative that he was a flat out song stealer. I will give you props for the mashup at the end though. That was cool.
To add, it's not theft, it's just style, different music styles have their vocabularies. There is a reason why for us today the music of classical era sounds all the same as well as the music of romantic era, but are very different from each other. There are more than a dozen songs that could be a "theft" of PYT. For example Advance - "Take me to the top".
There are a lot of bass line that sounds similar. And I think this is because bass is an element that is more rhythmical than melodic while being both. The bass follows the chords and i've noticed that if some songs share the same chords progression (regardless the key) and the same "mood"/groove, it's likely that they will sound similar or exactly identical, not necessarily always with the "stealing" intent.
I must say, I absolutely love your videos. They're very entertaining. And even though I'm a music buff & have extensive & even sumtimes meaningless knowledge, you've definitely turned me on to sum things that I wasn't aware of. For example.... as an MJ SUPER fan, there is no reason why I shouldn't own that version of PYT. But I'll admit, a lot of albums I wont purchase because I'll feel like I have all the songs already, and sum slip through. Like when I 1st heard Fly away, I was BLOWN away. Ur knowledge of music (especially Soul) is impressive & refreshing. I'M callin this 1. So u can tell anyone that I SAID SO... But u can come to the cookout anytime man.
This was the best way to sample a song at the time. Through interpolation. James Ingram did create the original song so that makes it extremely simple to clear the usage of those few riffs. Boom! You have a second hit out of the same instrument chords😂
Wasn't sure how I felt about the sponsored section, as it's not something I expect from this channel, but it actually did make me realise that I'd never considered an adjustable standing desk for my DJ setup and, now I am thinking about it, it's not a bad thing.
Dope. Another thing to add to this conversation is that some musicians have their favorite keys and ways of playing. I notice I have similar licks and runs when I'm playing keys. While my beats are different, the chord placement of the melody movement is similar. Let's call it a musician's musical DNA.
You know Mike stole/burrowed from other artist.. and he told them.. that's also why he NEVER sued anyone that sampled his music bc he said it's the highest form of flattery. Don't believe that.. look up if he ever sued anyone that sampled his music especially Kanye..he sampled a couple of Mike songs. H to the Izzo.. and Good Life
That mash up was great, and your bass playing is smooth. Inspiration on the Thriller album is everywhere but nowadays with sampling, interpolation it would be a legal minefield.
Michael Jackson didn’t rip off anybody… he didn’t even write the damn song, so how could he have ripped someone off? Y’all just won’t let this man rest in peace…
8:30 In fact, out of these 12 notes if we're not talking jazz or blues, most songs only use 7 of them anyhow. Unless there's a keychange, but you get what I mean. Out the seven scales we could use, we use mostly 2: major and minor. I mean, that makes the selection much, much smaller than what is theorecticly possible with 12 notes. Thank god, this is why we DJ music like this!
It's not blatant theft, it's the sonic sound and the inspiration of the time. Because if "stealing" is the case, then all big hair heavy metal of the 80s is stolen from each and every group.

But now it seems like you're just making a general narrative that he was a flat out song stealer. I will give you props for the mashup at the end though. That was cool.

You forgot "I Need Your Loving" by Teena Marie.
For a minute i thought it sounded like the Seinfeld theme. 8:00
But then again, don't all bass lines kind of sound like the Seinfeld theme? 😂
@@diggingthegreatstrueeeee
That was actually played on a Kurzweil keyboard.
Boy you had me Jamming to that bridge! 7:39 💯👊🏾
Vainilla Ice ripped off from Queen and David Bowie.
That original is fly and sexy.
Will messed it up.
2:38 "Will I AM at his peak" 🤣🤣🤣
Would love to see a DJ pull out a bass live!
You gotta tune into the livestreams on Patreon - last Saturdays replay is up for free right now
Just give James his songwriting props. Yes this is what songwriters do. James Ingram you are loved!
7:44 I love when he brakes out the bass to deal with the RUclips algorithm!
This was the best way to sample a song at the time. Through interpolation. James Ingram did create the original song so that makes it extremely simple to clear the usage of those few riffs. Boom! You have a second hit out of the same instrument chords😂
The cool chord changes of "PYT" separates it on a whole nother level from "Bad Mama Jama".
Interesting! Anyone else have a softer spot for Bad Mama Jamma than PYT?
2:58 "Where it's at, I got two turntables and a microphone".
Wasn't sure how I felt about the sponsored section, as it's not something I expect from this channel, but it actually did make me realise that I'd never considered an adjustable standing desk for my DJ setup and, now I am thinking about it, it's not a bad thing.
Go after Elivs, Justin Beiber, Costello, The Who. Leave the black artists alone.
he won't do that. The white men who stole black music are sacred in the eyes of pretentious white music snobs like this guy.
Why does it matter what race the artist is?
@@Charliem1994 why are only black artists discredited and white artists put on pedestals?
@@CCI320 That is totally incorrect. Get out of fantasy land because you sound ridiculous.
Maybe y’all can stop playing victim
Everything is a "rip-off" of something, no man is an island! Even Quincy :)
The song “Thriller” is absolutely a major copy of “Give It To Me Baby” by Rick James. There is no question about that one.
Dope. Another thing to add to this conversation is that some musicians have their favorite keys and ways of playing.
I notice I have similar licks and runs when I'm playing keys. While my beats are different, the chord placement of the melody movement is similar.
Let's call it a musician's musical DNA.
Are you on a crusade to discredit Michael Jackson or something? 😂
The exact opposite 😂
You know Mike stole/burrowed from other artist.. and he told them.. that's also why he NEVER sued anyone that sampled his music bc he said it's the highest form of flattery. Don't believe that.. look up if he ever sued anyone that sampled his music especially Kanye..he sampled a couple of Mike songs. H to the Izzo.. and Good Life
@@MrBuliths Quincy said Mike wasn't very original but he was a great imitator.
Yep. he can't stand that MJ is the GOAT and overshadows his mediocre white legends (who are the real thieves)
@@MrBuliths You're one of those black men who jumps at the chance to back up a white man attacking another black man. Pathetic.
Y’all whine too much
@@joshdaboss2365 lol, who is “Y’all”?
Rest in peace to MJ and James Ingram. 😇👍
MJ didn't play the instruments so how did he rip anybody off?
8:30 In fact, out of these 12 notes if we're not talking jazz or blues, most songs only use 7 of them anyhow. Unless there's a keychange, but you get what I mean.
Out the seven scales we could use, we use mostly 2: major and minor.
I mean, that makes the selection much, much smaller than what is theorecticly possible with 12 notes.
Thank god, this is why we DJ music like this!
Bad Mamma Jamma is so much greater though
Please, for the love of fucking god, RELEASE that mashup, dude. Amazing!
It's not blatant theft, it's the sonic sound and the inspiration of the time. Because if "stealing" is the case, then all big hair heavy metal of the 80s is stolen from each and every group.
*Spoiler*
It's not a rip off, just a product of being inspired by something, per 100% of all music.
Whoever did it best wins, MJ for the victory
