Oh yeah! I remember now. Synchro monster, right? I miss 2010. Ice barriers have awesome art. I quit when I realise the game kept going through the same phase. 1) Konami release new banlist, banning old op cards and making them worthless. 2) Konami release new expensive op cards 3) Every one has to buy them to play meta 4) Time passes, restart step 1) Money for konami! I still have a few cards and blue eyes (cause nostalgia!)
My top 10 70s prog rock bands (yes this is my opinion idgaf about the bands' popularity) 1) Gentle Giant 2) Kansas 3) Yes 4) King Crimson 5) Van der Graaf Generator 6) Focus 7) Caravan 8) Jethro Tull 9) Camel 10) Rush
You should check out 3, if you haven't already. Their last album is probably one of my favorites, and they have currently released a few singles, as they are continuing to do every third day of each month since April. I guess you could say that their music is similar to Coheed, because of the singer, but I honestly think that they are much better. And also a bit of trivia is that the singer for 3 is the brother of the drummer for Coheed & Cambria.
I love you for even including Karnivool, Riverside, and Oceansize in your honorable mentions. Phenomenal bands that are so overlooked but have a world of talent at their disposal (or had, in Oceansize's case). I'd recommend anyone to check out the band Amplifier if you're a fan of prog as well. They're like Pink Floyd and Oceansize collided together and the very best aspects of the band came out of the crash. Their stuff is so frenetic and unique, and they already have four great albums (the most recent of which, Echo Street, came out last year) and several EPs under their belt.
I will check out Amp...if you haven't already, go check out Pain of Salvation live ending themes on the tube. You won't be sorry...best singer, what a range!

This is the kind of stuff I love you for CK! Seriously, I'd advise everyone to check out every single band on this list, and in the honorable mentions! In addition to them though, here are a few other names that are really worth a look: Leprous: Solid talent all throughout the band, they create some of the most unique progressive metal and have had 3 solid albums released in a row as of late. Devin Townsend: Perhaps one of the most powerful vocalists in prog metal, his music is described as a "wall of sound". Pink Floyd: Need no introduction. If you haven't listened to them yet, you must. Gazpacho: Take a beautifully atmospheric and intense route to prog, with some art rock influences. Their latest album "Demon" is one of the best of 2014 so far. Cynic: Easily one of the most influential names in the metal scene, they are the embodiment of "progression", having an evolutionary sound that has never devolved in quality, no matter how much it's changed. Albums range from jazzy death metal to spacey, art-ish prog rock. Rishloo: Possessing a sound similar to Tool, but still completely of their own, these guys have a solid run throughout their careers There are plenty more that are still untouched, but every single artist mentioned here is worth checking out.
Good on you for knowing about Rishloo. It should also be mentioned that all of that amazing sound they've created through three (soon to be four) albums was done without them even being signed to a record label. Thinking about it, have you ever heard of The Pineapple Thief?

Was Uriah Heep in the honorable mentions? They should be because even though they're not one of the most well-known bands, they've been around since 1969 and are still releasing new albums. Also, they've been able to keep going despite having worse luck with a steady lineup than Spinal Tap had with drummers.
Three years later, I must say that update is needed because of the band called Haken. These - my favorite- giants, proved already being among best 5 easily. Their progresiveness is undeniable unlike Rush , Tool , or Kansas . They've become symbol of polyrhythmic - timing synchronization. Their influences are countless , touching almost every genre of rock/pop and beyond . With just perfect amount of incomplication , feel of symphonic soundtrack only multiply their massive abilities. There's lot more to this story ... but I have to go to work now . Cheers.
Tool seriously only made an honorable mention are u serious. I listen to a lot of different prog metal groups at most cant even compete with the lyrics that MJK can write and the amazing trio of Jones, Carry, and Chancellor.
I agree with the list but your missing and integral part of the 13 course meal. Pink Floyd is the meat of this meal, man. And I ask how can you have your pudding if you don't eat your meat????.
What is your favorite Yes album? For myself it's Close to the Edge. What do you think about the album "Drama" with Trevor Horn? Thanks for the list....
Good choices. Names that I'd throw out there : -Stam1na (best band ever to be formed, along with Amorphis and Mokoma, seriously) -Mokoma (to CKN, if you don't know this band... just go check it out, it's so damn good, trust me... rock in Finland, thrash/death/prog metal everywhere else in the world) ;) -Arena -Leprous -Steve Hackett (as much as I like them, neither Gabriel nor Collins made Genesis... is was all Hackett's work) -Stratovarius (yes, it's progressive, especially the first and the last couple albums)

I remember talking to this guy at a prog show who claimed he was big into prog. He kept going on about Rush. When I asked him about Yes he only had one of their eighties albums. I was like "dude..............." Lol. To his defense he was a younger guy in his twenties who probably wasn't exposed to Yes and probably only got into prog because of Rush or Dream Theater. I agree with the guy here though that anyone into or getting into prog needs to check out Yes especially Close to the Edge, Fragile and Relayer to start with. There's some mind blowing music on those and some great stuff on most of their albums. Also as far as honorable mentions I know you can't mention everyone but Echolyn, Pendragon, Eloy, Magma, Glass Hammer and Djam Karet weren't mentioned and in my opinion should have been. Also a great forgotten prog band from the nineties is Mastermind. Imagine ELP crossed with Dream Theater. Over all great job though.
Rush is my traditional favorite band, saw them three times, in 1976-78-1981 for Moving Pictures. love Yes and others on the list but for me, they all pale in comparison to Pain of Salvation, my new favorite band ever. There live show - ending themes is the best show I've ever seen and I've seen and played a lot of them. I'm glad they at least got a mention. Start at 29:30 with 'fist full of nothing' and have a blast. 'Everything, all the time!' and the best singer ever to wear that title. Amazzzing!!!!
hi ckn when you make lists like this and i check a band you mentioned i never know were to start. could you please make a list in the description of one album or even only one song to get into the band.
Hey CKN, you should check out Anubis Gate from Denmark and Teramaze from Australia. Both just released some amazing Progressive metal albums this year being Horizons (Anubis Gate) and Esoteric Symbolism (Teramaze). Great stuff if you like Prog Metal/Rock, you love these 2 bands.
In Vain. I discovered this band like two months ago, and their take on progressive death metal is the one that completely blows my mind and gives me multiple eargasms with each listen. Their latest album final track Floating on the Murmuring Tides is my all-time favorite piece of music. =)
Glad you mentioned Genesis, they're phenomenal. Everyone should check out The Musical Box (tribute to Gabriel era) live if they get the chance, it's amazing.
Uhm.....you did hear him mention "and there are many many more I'm sure I left out" right? You know the reason he said that ahead of time, is to keep people like you from freaking out
For those who are looking for more prog check out the bands Premiata Forneria Marconi, Fancyfluid, Alphataurus, Horus, Dream Machine, Semiramis, Gleemen, Gong, Delirium, Eloy, Calliope, Birth Control, Etna and Ash Ra Tempel.
Really expected Tool to be on the list :P Allthough they were in the honorable mentions, I really think they deserve to be on the list. Just my opinion.
My Top 15 15. Dream theatre 14. Super Tramp 13. ELO 12. ELP 11. Porcupine Tree 10. Frank Zappa 9. Gentle Giant 8. Yes 7. Jethro Tull 6. Van Der Graaf Generator 5. Camel 4. Pink Floyd 3. Genesis 2. Rush 1. King Crimson
My Top 5 Favs Prog Metal/Rock 1. Tool (My childhood band I adore a lot) 2. Porcupine Tree (Recently I got into them and I have 0 songs I don't like) 3. Yes (I love their music and I love jamming out to them) 4. Opeth (My high school band I listen to a lot but I play their music once in a while and rock out to) 5. Dream Theater (Probably got me deeper into more Prog Metal and also I play them when I get into DT mode)
Artists that should also be on this list: - Devin Townsend - The Ocean Collective - Isis - Cynic - Between The Buried And Me - Pink Floyd - Neurosis - Mastodon - Tool - Deftones - Orphaned Land
My off-the-top-of-my-head top 10 10 Mastodon (Sludgy goodness) 9 Styx (One of the few Progressive commercial successes) 8 Jethro Tull/Yes (the boundary pushers of the genre) 7 Opeth (fusing Prog and Death Metal) 6 Gazpacho (they make movies not albums) 5 Kamelot (Kahn!!!! Er... Karevick!!!) 4 Pink Floyd (Everything) 3 Tool (Mohammed) 2 Porcupine Tree (Jesus Fucking Christ) 1 Rush (God) Honorable mentions: King Crimson, Frank Zappa, The Pineapple Thief, Muse, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, Polkadot Cadaver, Symphony X, Dream Theater, ugh!!! Too many to name
My brain cannot process how someone can love Tool but love at least two other bands more. Imo, the song "Lateralus," alone, is more inspired than anything Porcupine Tree or Rush have come up with. I didn't say "proggy,"I said "inspired." I hesitate to share my opinion, because people tend to assume I'm trying to pass it off as objective fact.
no.just no. To me: Rush>Porcupine Tree>Tool>everything else. you've obviously not heard that much of either band to make such an absolutist statement. this is opinion, not fact. cant we just say its good fucking music and enjoy it before we shit on other people for their opinions? (I mean if it was justin biebler or lady gaga or whatever the industry whores are churning out I would understand)
Rush X Anthem Eerrm, you just made my head hurt. I went out of my way to make sure you noticed that I was merely expressing my personal opinion, and here you are accusing me of making an absolutist statement intended to be taken as fact. "I hesitate to share my opinion, because people tend to assume I'm trying to pass it off as objective fact." How do you read that, then type what you typed? And, if I "shit" on you, you "shit" on me with your reply. I don't feel "shit" on when people share a negative opinion of something I like.
10. Porcupine Tree 9. Rush 8. Gentle Giant 7. Kansas 6. Marillion 5. Yes 4. Van Der Graaf Generator 3. King Crimson 2. Mr. Bungle 1. Genesis (My top ten)
I was starting to get nervous he wasn't going to mention Yes. Surprised but delighted they were number one. They are like Genesis in that you really can't judge them just by their later hits. As for Pink Floyd I don't know. I guess the guy who made the video doesn't consider them prog. Being that Kansas and Rush are both on here I'm a bit surprised myself. I agree that Pink Floyd should be in the top ten though. Despite the PF oversight it's a good list over all.
Bands not mentioned in this list (or honourable mentions) but are great: Pink Floyd Jethro Tull Frank Zappa Periphery Children of Bodom Mastodon Green Carnation An Endless Sporadic Jeff Beck
I've noticed it's becoming a trend that you take video requests. So how about you do a top 5 or 10 bands bands which come from non-traditional countries.
I was ready to blast this list for not having Yes on it, but low and behold they were #1, which doesn't surprise me. Yes is an amazing band with a whimsical and adventurous feel to their pieces. Close to the Edge, And You and I, Roundabout, Southside of the Sky, just to name a few. Epic. However, that does raise a bigger question. NO PINK FLOYD!? Unarguably the most popular progressive rock band of all time, and honestly, a band that I thought with your background, would have at #1 easily.
Bugger i was logged in as my Daughter so the comment below is MEEEEEEE HAHAHAHA Hi There Love your Reviews As a lover of Prog it was a real buzz to hear you mention MARILLION. A lifelong fan of the early works of this British Neo Prog Band the best of the bunch that included Pendragon. Have to say i have not listened to the Albums after FISH left but for a couple of good one's Brave and Afraid of Sunlight. But If you can get on Import Fish's Work then you must get Vigil In The Wilderness of Mirrors ( His first Solo Record). And if you want modern Prog at its very best Get a hold of the majestic 13th Star and A Feast Of Consequences. His Last 2 Outings and Both so Well crafted. His Solo work has been hit and miss but either way you can't go wrong with any of these title. Enjoy

Can you do a top 10 Experimental Rock/Metal band list. Bands like Mr.Bungle and the most recent Twelve Foot Ninja (they are becoming one of my new favorite bands along with ghost)
My top 10 Progressive rock/Metal bands of all time: 10. Liquid Tension Experiment 5. Jethro Tull 9. Trans Siberian Orchestra 4. Yes 8. Dream theatre 3. Electric Light Orchestra 7. Emerson, Lake and Palmer 2. Rush 6. Kansas 1. PINK FLOYD (OH MY GOD)
+Abdulla Essa That's a classic..Also it's no secret that he is a big fan of Pink Floyd. He need not include that in this list, It's above everything else IMO
I love you ckn but you did forget The masters, Pink Floyd! Unforgiving! Their Animals record alone makes them worth of being number 1 (And yet even as a DT fanboy I am a gigantic fan of Floyd) And Leprous are amazing but their influence is not huge. They are still fairly unknown though they are awesome!
Yes is a great choice for number because they're the best prog band, but where is Pink Floyd? Lol they're one of the best and most popular prog bands and they weren't even a mention
King crimson changed members a ton. Only one member has been with the band since the start. After their first album three members left. Because of this they have released many different kinds of albums but in the court of the crimson king is probably the best and one of the best albums of all time.
Zappa is one of a kind sho'nuff ! Not nec. my fav but definitely a monsta' influence in the genre . I lean toward a no list these days ( except the " to do " & "grocery" variety ) but when I was younger I was very listy ! I concur with some of your picks & then on about half ( of your honorable mention list ) I was not at all familiar with but sounds like you are very well-versed on the prog genre . I have mostly referred to Rush as the " Grandfathers Of Prog " & Yes is a def YES as far as I am concerned at or near the top . I have got to go back & listen to King Crimson cause when I was younger somehow totally missed them . I don't even ever remember any of my friend music lovers & musicians I knew mentioning them . Not sure if I am on point with this fav of mine but I will mention them as you did not - Watchtower . I think they had tlo be a major player in this field (**)

Yes it is. It's Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, which is my favorite card in the game. I'm still pissed off that it's banned in the TCG.

I love his reviewing style
I know; I've been a fan of his for a while. I was just stating it for the possible other readers who may be wanting bands to check out.
White1Tiger2Dan Well, thank you for the list.
I´ve just listened to some Cynic songs and they are awesome so far.
Good on you for knowing about Rishloo. It should also be mentioned that all of that amazing sound they've created through three (soon to be four) albums was done without them even being signed to a record label.
Thinking about it, have you ever heard of The Pineapple Thief?
orphaeus99 Checking em out right now as I type this. Sounds promising. Thanks for the suggestion.

No

Van der graaf generator is number one in my book. Probably followed by either Genesis or Jethro Tull
I'm looking for a band like coheed and cambria, but of course with their own touch, any suggestions?
you should really check out Sun Caged. Extremely underrated Dutch progressive metal band. (their guitarist also played a solo on an Ayreon record)
hi ckn
when you make lists like this and i check a band you mentioned i never know were to start. could you please make a list in the description of one album or even only one song to get into the band.
Good list, I would also mention Cardiacs Gazpacho and Mastodon
Gazpacho is so underrated.
Hmm, I'm surprised that Devin Townsend didn't show up here. Oh well, to each his own.
Meshuggah, Mastodon, and oh um... PINK FUCKING FLOYD.
where are they, ckn, WHERE ARE THEY?!?!?!?!
seriously not including pink floyd on the list is like making a list of top 10 cookies and not even giving "chocolate chip" an honorable mention.
Uhm.....you did hear him mention "and there are many many more I'm sure I left out" right? You know the reason he said that ahead of time, is to keep people like you from freaking out
i did, but when he says that in his other videos he usually doesn't precede to commit such a drastic oversight.
Meshuggah is incoherent garbage.
Shoregrey And you're a dumb fuck.
i dont think you cant really make a top 10 prog metal rock list...Its just so diverse you got bands from king crimson to alll he bands from today
Progressive Rock:
5. Genesis
4. Yes
3. King Crimson
2. Pink Floyd
1. Rush
Progressive Metal:
5. Gojira
4. Opeth

2. Tool
1. Dream Theater

13. ELO
12. ELP
11. Porcupine Tree
10. Frank Zappa
9. Gentle Giant
8. Yes
7. Jethro Tull
6. Van Der Graaf Generator
5. Camel
4. Pink Floyd
3. Genesis
2. Rush
1. King Crimson
My Top 5 Favs Prog Metal/Rock

2. Porcupine Tree (Recently I got into them and I have 0 songs I don't like)
3. Yes (I love their music and I love jamming out to them)
4. Opeth (My high school band I listen to a lot but I play their music once in a while and rock out to)
5. Dream Theater (Probably got me deeper into more Prog Metal and also I play them when I get into DT mode)
Seriously, how is ELP not on this list?
Wankery
Artists that should also be on this list:
- Devin Townsend
- The Ocean Collective
- Isis
- Cynic
- Between The Buried And Me
- Pink Floyd
- Neurosis
- Mastodon
- Tool
- Deftones
- Orphaned Land
Deftones is nu-metal you idiot
My off-the-top-of-my-head top 10
10 Mastodon (Sludgy goodness)
9 Styx (One of the few Progressive commercial successes)
8 Jethro Tull/Yes (the boundary pushers of the genre)
7 Opeth (fusing Prog and Death Metal)
6 Gazpacho (they make movies not albums)
5 Kamelot (Kahn!!!! Er... Karevick!!!)
4 Pink Floyd (Everything)
3 Tool (Mohammed)
2 Porcupine Tree (Jesus Fucking Christ)
1 Rush (God)
Honorable mentions: King Crimson, Frank Zappa, The Pineapple Thief, Muse, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, Polkadot Cadaver, Symphony X, Dream Theater, ugh!!!
"I hesitate to share my opinion, because people tend to assume I'm trying to pass it off as objective fact."
How do you read that, then type what you typed? And, if I "shit" on you, you "shit" on me with your reply. I don't feel "shit" on when people share a negative opinion of something I like.
Hello ckn, could you review the new Lord Mantis album, pleeeease?
10. Porcupine Tree
9. Rush
8. Gentle Giant
7. Kansas
6. Marillion
5. Yes
4. Van Der Graaf Generator
3. King Crimson
2. Mr. Bungle
1. Genesis
(My top ten)
Did I miss something? Where's Pink Floyd?!
Exactly
I was starting to get nervous he wasn't going to mention Yes. Surprised but delighted they were number one. They are like Genesis in that you really can't judge them just by their later hits. As for Pink Floyd I don't know. I guess the guy who made the video doesn't consider them prog. Being that Kansas and Rush are both on here I'm a bit surprised myself. I agree that Pink Floyd should be in the top ten though. Despite the PF oversight it's a good list over all.
Tony Seyffer That's like listing the top ten jazz acts and not mentioning Miles Davis. Heresy!!!
Bands not mentioned in this list (or honourable mentions) but are great:
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
Frank Zappa
Periphery
Children of Bodom
Mastodon
Green Carnation
An Endless Sporadic
Jeff Beck
Fish era Marillion is better than Hogarth's
No Gryphon mention? I think they deserve a listen if you haven't checked them out. Also feel like a Nektar mention is deserved.
NO PINK FLOYD?
Could you do a Top 10 death metal bands of all time video ?
Yes I would love to see that
Can you review our album "Focus On The Center?"
Bugger i was logged in as my Daughter so the comment below is MEEEEEEE
HAHAHAHA
Hi There
Love your Reviews
As a lover of Prog it was a real buzz to hear you mention MARILLION.
Enjoy
My favourite is probably Opeth followed closely by enslaved
And Leprous, Klone, Lunatic Soul, Arcturus, Enslaved, Dakrya, Pagan's Mind, Liquid Tention Experiment and I'm still missing stuff aren't I?
Yes' "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is so complex and amazing at the same time!

Can you do a top 10 Experimental Rock/Metal band list. Bands like Mr.Bungle and the most recent Twelve Foot Ninja (they are becoming one of my new favorite bands along with ghost)
Pink Floyd?
What the hell? Where's Pink Floyd?
I checked out Haken because of you. Thank you so much. :')
What is your opinion on Peter Gabriel's solo career?
Com'n CKN, are doing some kind of mind tricks excluding Pink Floyd from the list?
Where is Floyd? Was The Wall not enough for the list? I agree about Mindcrime and its' 2006 sequel, both great albums.
My top 10 Progressive rock/Metal bands of all time:
10. Liquid Tension Experiment 5. Jethro Tull
9. Trans Siberian Orchestra 4. Yes
8. Dream theatre 3. Electric Light Orchestra
7. Emerson, Lake and Palmer 2. Rush
6. Kansas 1. PINK FLOYD (OH MY GOD)
I think BTBAM should've been in the top 10s :-/
Actually it should be first, no questions about it! ;)
I think in the next 10 years BtBaM and Tool would definitely make the list, they just still need to resonate
What about Emerson, Lake And Palmer, Van Der Graaf Generator and Pink Floyd? You should really listen to some VDGG if you haven't.
Where the F is Pink Floyd? it suppose to be on top 5 at least
+Abdulla Essa That's a classic..Also it's no secret that he is a big fan of Pink Floyd. He need not include that in this list, It's above everything else IMO
cleary a child
I love you ckn but you did forget The masters, Pink Floyd! Unforgiving! Their Animals record alone makes them worth of being number 1 (And yet even as a DT fanboy I am a gigantic fan of Floyd) And Leprous are amazing but their influence is not huge. They are still fairly unknown though they are awesome!
Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Seventh Wonder, Ne Obliviscaris
Yes is a great choice for number because they're the best prog band, but where is Pink Floyd? Lol they're one of the best and most popular prog bands and they weren't even a mention
Hawkwind are awesome. Good to see they got an honorable mention.
Here is my top 10
10. Symphony X
9. Genesis
8. Pink Floyd
7. Yes
6. Opeth
5. Ayreon
4. Tool
3. Haken
2. Rush
1. Dream Theater
Pink Floyd?!?
King crimson changed members a ton. Only one member has been with the band since the start. After their first album three members left. Because of this they have released many different kinds of albums but in the court of the crimson king is probably the best and one of the best albums of all time.
Prog fucking rules! Thanks for the list, ckn!
If King Crimson, Muse, or Primus aren't here I'm gonna kill someone. Also, Tool really was the one who brought prog to the people in the 90s.
5. Pink Floyd
4.Tool
3. Periphery
2. Dream theater
1. Opeth
Gentle Giant, ELP and Van der graaf Generator *couldn't* make you list?!?!?!?!
