Everyone I know who had been fans back then always claim Kurt was the best singer of all time... smh. They clearly hadn't heard the multitude of acts whose vocalists could sing circles around Kurt (especially Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder)
Nirvana is a grunge band with more of a punk influence. And I think they are not so overrated at some sense. Cause of Nirvana many other bands such as Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden got singed to major labels and were able to become what they became , but then again they are not the best band ever so its more of the fans that make Nirvana sound like this gift from god.
Its not just the fans. The critics too. Critics, who don't know what they're talking about, give Nirvana credit for starting the so called "Grunge" scene. Rolling Stone is at the forefront of overpraising the band. And subsequently overpraising Kurt Cobain. How did he crack their top 100 vocalist chart? Lmao. I love Kurt, but come on now...
Voenheim Rex Well for the style and sound he was going for he had a good voice. But to be at the very top over other amazing vocalist like Layne Staley and Chris Cornell is just ludicrous.
No yeah he had a good voice. I won't dispute that. But a top 100 all-time kind of voice? We're looking at ALL genres of music here. His name shouldn't crack that list. Maybe a top 300. Maybe.
Pantera is one of my favorite bands, but I'm not one of those "COWBOYS FROM HELL!" dumbass's (though it's a great song). Though my favorite Pantera song is Cemetery Gates.
Where's Avenged Sevenfold? I am a fan, but this band has arguably acquired more worshippers in the last 5 years or so than any band you noted. Good vid though, keep it up!
***** True, but he said this list is for artists whose overrated status didn't happen until after the 2000's. Avenged didn't really establish a diehard cult following until sometime around 2005 or so. (Not quite sure on that exact year, but it was definitely post-2000.) And they didn't blow up to their full, out of hand potential until more recently.
Merlin Ambrosius Sorry, but they are, whether you *think* they're "metal" or not... metal isn't a word that each metalhead gets to define on their own. There are requirements for a genre and even though they're borderline hard-rock, A7X fits the "heavy metal" bill.
Am glad you mentioned Opeth, I love their music, they are of of my favorite bands, but some people think that they are the best band in the history of humankind when that is not the case, their music is kinda boring in some parts, some of their albums are boring and some of them are excelent. Good video!
I completely agree with you. Black water park was boring and I though damnation was great. I have heard about them going to shit but I enjoy their softer stuff.
@lomgshelton well, tbh Black Water park is together with ghost reveries, orchid and damnation my favorite opeth's albums, but albums like watershed, morning rise and their last one are really boring imo, some good songs here and there but that is all.
I don't think that Opeth is even remotely overrated from a musical standpoint. They have a diverse and consistent discography at least till Watershed. Dream Theater and Tool (not metal) are far more deserving of the overrated label. Their music don't speak for the ridiculous amount of praise they get.
I greatly agree with you about Mastodon. They're amazing musicians, but they're boring as hell live. I was pretty excited to see them last year at Mayhem along with Five Finger Death Punch (who were entertaining as hell), but because of the lack of fan interaction, I was pretty bored. Other than that, you make some pretty good points. The only ones I really disagree with are you saying that Escape the Fate and that bunch isn't metal and Draiman being a hack. Also, you didn't need to mention BOTDF at all as they were never metal to begin with despite them claiming to be "more metal than Slayer", and I don't even think their fans label them as metal. Do they?
Oh my god! I know what you're talking about with Mastodon, I saw then live like 2 years ago and I loved them but come concert day I the combination of the speakers not adjusting to the music ( I blame their sound guy and the fact that they were more of an opening act to Marilyn Manson and Slayer) And the fact that they really didn't do anything to make the crowd go wild which they did earlier with another band, I was bored even though I loved the band haha :c
Mastodon is the only band where I love/hate every other album...its so odd... Remission/...Meh Leviathan/Love Blood Mountain/...Meh Crack The Skye/Good The Hunter/...Meh Once More Round the Sun/Favorite!!! Emperor of Sand/Hate...and they win a Grammy! Anyone feel this way??
Disturbed was one of the first "heavy" bands i ever got into and they will always be important to me for that reason. I had always had a passing interest bands like in KoRn, Slipknot and Metallica but never got too crazy about it. Otherwise i was listening to stuff like Blink 182 or whatever was on TRL at the time: Rap and Pop Rock (I was in high school, give me a break). I got really into Killswitch Engage around the mid 2000s which really started my true love of the metal scene.
I am glad that you touched upon Opeth. I remember talking to another fan at a show, and she said something along the lines like "only Opeth can write long songs," and i'm thinking, "what?" Yes, they are very good musicians and songwriters, and the albums that I've listened to are very good and I like them a lot, but its as if Opeth has become the benchmark for many fans, and I'm thinking, "oh come on people, they aren't the best thing since sliced bread." And I also agree with you on Trivium. They are rather overrated, but honestly I enjoy their music very very much.
Hi coverkiller, I have a humble petition, I know you have more than 1 discography going on right now, but when you get a chance could you do a rush discography? Dude, if anyone deserves one is them, I'm pretty sure more than one person will appreciate it, and let's face it, you owe them one for giving you such an awesome birthday gift 2 years ago in the form of clockwork angels, (I'm also curious to know which are you favorite rush albums)btw happy birthday, I know it's gonna be in a couple of days but what the hell. Cheers!
Power metal is a good album, pantera fans are a dedicated bunch! Alot of it is Dimebag,as a guitar player, he was so good and original, one of the greatest! and his horrible death even solidified his legacy, because nobody has really compared to his guitar skill or his well deserved rep as a good person! met him in 2000, incredibly nice and warm guy,no ego! Positive and funny, life of the party, he deserves the praise and love!!
Here's my list. I'm including rock and metal bands 1- Halestorm 2- In This Moment 3- The Pretty Reckless 4- Linkin Park 5- Ghost 6- Five Finger Death Punch 7- Rob Zombie 8- Avenged Sevenfold 9- Lamb of God 10- Volbeat
Brenda Cole a bunch of bands trying to be periphery and tesseract took the most stereotypical aspects of experimental/technical hardcore and metalcore and made it into a style and now people are trying to make it into a genre. the word "djent" actually refers to the sound that down-tuned open strings sound when chugged...like "djent-djent-djent, djent-djent-djent-djent-djent, djent-djent...djent"...yeah
"Dude have you seen that video for the Messhugah song Bleed? It's fucking bruuuutal!" "Dude I know, they use poly-rhythms so you know they are the best band ever!" Sums up the djent overrating and the Messhugah worship.
I love the channel and reviews. Fantastic work my friend. I know you probably get a lot of assholes always stating shit like this but I have a recommendation. In your videos when you do a list like a top 10, 25, or whatever, you should put the list in your about section of the video for quick reference. Just a suggestion, take it or leave it. I still love your work and keep it metal. \m/
Victor Moonlight Just to give into it, Contradictions Collapse came first in 1991 (I'm not including the self-titled EP in 1989). Then came Destroy Erase Improve in 1995, Chaosphere in 98. Nothing in 2002 and so forth. Although in all honesty, Koloss is over-compressed.
JoseRicoTacoNachoQuesadillaMandillaJones Also, metalcore is way overrated, over-saturated and sucks. I'm sick of hearing it like all of the pop songs today (whatever is topping the charts from Bruno Mars or whoever). They sound the same, do not sound heavier, and don't try something new. I like aggressive music near 200 bpm (in a lot of cases). Not a lot of songs at pop punk tempo, no matter how much I love Green Day and The Offspring. Green Day is overrated in the way Motorhead is. People only know a few songs, mainly either American Idiot or 21 Guns. They don't know the better songs pre-American Idiot like Jaded or 86.
I think that Arch Enemy is pretty overrated. I know that they realesed albums before 2000, but they have stupid fans who don't care about albums from late 90's. They care only about albums with Angela, started with Wages of Sin in 2001, they don't even know that there was other singer in this band and he was a dude, and everybody is like : "OMG, Angela is a best singer on the world, because she's a woman who can growl, theres nobody like her in the other bands." Everything about those fans, especially fangirls, is wrong. I really want to know what those nuttheads think about Alissa. And I have absolutely nothing against Arch Enemy or Angela, great band, amazing frontwoman. But some of their fans are just anoxious. I'm going to see Arch Enemy in 12. Juli on Masters of Rock festival, and I hope that there wouldn't be some asshole screaming "ANGELA, ANGELA, ANGELA !".
I think you're right about disturbed bringing out the same album over and over again. But I think it still works. They are one of my favourite bands personally. But you should include bring me the horizon.
I think a few obvious ones are Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Tool, Five Finger Death Punch, etc. But one that I haven't heard anyone mention yet is Nightwish. I've met quite a few Nightwish fans who are nothing short of fanatical and worship Tuomas Holopainen as if he's God's gift to music. Don't get me wrong, I really dig them, but a lot of their fans need to chill out - they are still just a band.
Lol im a die hard Trivium fan but you're right haha. In waves and VF were nothing compared to Shogun and Ascendancy. Except theyve been putting snippets of new stuff and its a lot more Shogun vibe which has my hopes up higher than ever before
THANK YOU FOR SAYING MASTODON! My God they're a talented band and stuff but people just go on and on about them. I find it hard to enjoy it because of all the hype
Tortoise_Rights Activist I actually don’t feel like there’s a strong hype train for Mastodon. It’s not like they’re a super popular band or a band rising fast like Ghost is. Sure, they’re the lowest hanging fruit of modern progressive metal (not meant to be an insult)and have had a little chart success, but they’re still pretty underground in my view. Their fans aren’t super annoying, and they aren’t gassing them up as much as most truly overrated bands’ fan bases are. Plus, most metal elitists have respect for Mastodon and some even like their music. If they were truly overrated I think metal elitists would be vocal about that.
I believe Lamb of God and Pantera have the hype they do because they basically moved the metal scene in a different direction. Both are still amazing bands but now there is competition out there.
I'm surprised you haven't reviewed an August Burns Red album by now. Rescue And Restore was, in my opinion, one of the best metal albums of 2013, "core" or not
My top overrated bands would be Asking Alexandria (yes, I like them but they're overrated), sleeping with sirens, suicide silence (due to Mitch's death people act like they always loved them when they only knew one song) pierce the veil, A Day to remember, of mice and men, Attila, white chapel (my opinion), falling in reverse, black veil brides. Escape the fate isn't pop punk, they're post-hardcore but yeah I hear people say they're metal.
I'm not sure if everyone will agree with me, but I think System of a Down is a band that became overrated in the 2000s after Toxicity came out. Now believe me, SOAD is an amazing band, and they're probably in my Top 10 bands, but I feel some fans fall under one of these categories: 1. They claim to be big fans, but the only song they like or know is either Chop Suey! or B.Y.O.B. 2. They don't fully understand the message behind some of their songs (not a huge issue to fret about though) 3. They claim to like them to go with the flow of others.
When I heard Opeth's Heritage being reviewed on NPR I knew they were headed in the wrong direction. I don't believe Opeth are doing what they are doing because that's what they want to do. I think part of what they are doing has to do with Akerfeldt's growling abilities debilitating over the years and him solely deciding what the band's direction is going to be. Overrated though, I wouldn't say so. Opeth to me has been a great band with consistently good albums up until Heritage. Sure Heritage had some good tracks but compared to previous albums felt weak. 9 Great albums under your belt, consistently improving over the previous one- that deserves praise.
Couldn't agree with you more! Don't get me wrong, I'm really into that 'pierce the veil' kinda music and have been for ages, but it is a blatant lie to call then anything close to metal xD great band, just not metal! And I think it's something that certain people may be able to realise when they compare it to other bands who actually are considered metal. To be honest, I kinda just wish everyone could calm their shit and realise everybody has their tastes... But I realise that is never going to happen due to the scarily obsessed individuals who will literally make you feel bad for having an opinion! I have started to widen my tastes to a larger section of music, though I'm still into that 'post-hardcore'(or whatever it is) kinda stuff. And therefor I haven't seen too much hatred amongst metal fans, unless it's against pierce the veil or asking Alexandria haha (and I do get why they hate them!) but I'm not going to lie when I say that fans of 'screamo bands' are creepily obsessive...
I agree, I love PTV but i do not understand why anyone would call them metal as they really aren't. PTV are definatly post-hardcore which is nothing like metal.
Mastodon is my favorite band, they really hold a nostalgia aspect for me so maybe thats why with Leviathan. Also, after CTS came out i was convinced it was perfect imo
Avenged Sevenfold. The band itself isn't bad, however when I try to get into their music, the fans become repellant. I couldn't even tell you how many times I've seen or gotten into Synyster Gates vs. Herman Li arguments, because it almost seems like A7x and DF fans are insolubly hostile towards each other.
I completely agree on the "fake metal bands" part because I do like a lot of the bands in that post-hardcore/screamo realm but I know theyre not metal bands! and it makes me mad to see people think theyre SO hardcore cause they listen to Of Mice and Men, Pierce the Veil, or Issues and other bands of that nature... I listen to almost everything rock/metal but ur right, those fans need to chill out
Shit like that makes me think that "liking Metal" or "getting into Metal" is going to be some kind of trend. Because the fans of those bands ESPECIALLY Asking Alexandria over hype them like a fashion trend. It's certain propagandas you can see through and catch on to certain waves. Some of the genres that weren't about shit at one point of time is like the biggest thing now, and I do mean "now." I don't have a probelm with Metal completely penetrating the mainstream glass ceiling, but it's going to get to a point where it's a "cool thing" to have a metal edge or image. And I'm scared of that because not too long ago, I got into the metal community. It was something that fabricated "individuality" and I loved to death, I don't do this for imagery and I think SOME of the fans of those bands are riding that exact coat tail.
Brenda Cole exactly! They like these "fake metal" bands because now that's becoming the cool thing to do... however when u get into bands in the TRUE metal realm u start to see less of that... there's more individuality when u get into bands in that world... cause I don't think liking bands like Machine Head, 80's Metallica, Pantera or other bands of that nature will ever be a trend! Cause those bands do more then just preach to teenagers about theyre heart being broken and sayin "oh youre not alone, we'll save ur life" bullshit...
Now you should do a list of metal bands that are seriously being underrated if you haven't already. Some examples that come to my mind include Converge, Isis, Baroness, Torche, Kylesa, High on Fire, Nachtmystium, Kvelertak, Deathspell Omega, and Ulcerate.
Kvelertak fans, such as myself, are pretty passionate but too many people write them off just because they aren't taking themselves too seriously. Other bands I mentioned simply aren't getting the hype they deserve.
Well, compared to the bands he mentioned in the video, I think they are still pretty underrated. I see what you mean though, no one should honestly believe that everything a certain musician touches turns to gold. It's just that the bands who I think are underrated deserve a larger audience.
I don't agree with your definition of overated...Overated simply means:more popular than they should be. Now every stupid kids on your chanel are gonna go and say Opeth and Pantera are overated...when in reality they deserve all the praise they get...they are that good.
if this list were not so thoroughly done I'd be annoyed. How ever, may I ask, how do you propose bands gain a fan base with out the shadow of being "overated" lurking in the foreground, just waiting for fedora wearers every where to throw at them?
Opeth is a decent band but have definitely become overrated. Never got the Mastodon hype. Prog/Tech metal in general these days has jut become a big pile of redundancy and stagnation. Been listening to a lot more 90's metal these days because the stuff coming out lately is a one and done listening experience. New Mayhem and Vader were snorefests and new Behemoth is a mixed bag. The next Carcass album can't arrive soon enough.
Linkin Park isn't metal. Maybe they used to be but nowadays they're a bunch of different genres and that's why I love them. I like diversity and with Linkin Park I'm always excited to see what sound they do next. I've loved every LP, Fort Minor, etc. material they've put out. But that's me, I realize people hate them but I never get why when they're the people that listen to Nicki Minaj (the worst pop “artist" alive") and Meghan Trainor's cliche unoriginal bullshit
SuperGamingGuy All my life I disliked Linkin Park, and I never thought of them as "metal". But every Linkin Park fan seems to think they're the heaviest metal band ever
+OzzyFan324282 they are certainly not. but I don't judge a band based on their heaviness. they've made heavy stuff for sure. but heavier than Slipknot?? or Disturbed?? definitely not.
Cradle of Filth. I run across quite a few people who say they LOVE black metal, only to hear them say they know of COF. I'm definitely not a fan of black metal myself, but c'mon y'all, Cradle of Filth is just the pop and mainstream side of BM. I guess the problem is that they are wrongfully using the word love, especially towards a whole genre which is jam packed full of crazy awesome acts, when they only might love that one band. Can't say I love Death Metal, either. I love Amon Amarth, but that's about it in the death genre. Avenged Sevenfold. I've never hated this band, but have hated on them for no good reasons before. It seems to me that is has become a staple of the metal world to instantly throw hate at this band, and Metallica as well, if you aren't a fan, just because they are extremely popular. "Gate's playing is too fuckin simple," "M. Shadows sounds like he has a hog up his nose and a frog stuffed in his throat." Stuff like that I hear more often than positive comments of the band such as, "They really connected to their fans and play the music they want," or, "Hell, they may not play the music I like, but they have a rather diverse collection of albums and songs." Once again, you always have those people that LOVE this band and others because of one album or a few songs and they never go beyond that. Myself, I found City of Evil and Nightmare to be excellent albums. Blinded by chains gets me going ever time. One last thing, The Rev. was NOT the best drummer evaaaaaa! No, but he was a damn good drummer that threw down some kickin beats and had fun in his time.
Well, one killed the other, so the grave? Isn't Varg on his 5th church? I can't really comment on their music much. I'm not much of a fan of black metal. At least that kind of BM.
@@28604 i know its 3 years old i realized there is better bands then 5 finger even though five finger is pretty decent a7x is better for example (i am biased with that statement)
If you were old enough to experience the effect that PANTERA had when they first came out, you would not say they were overrated. They almost singlehandedly kept metal relevant in the non-underground world during the entire 1990s. One of the most influential metal bands of all time.
I gonna throw this in I been to many gigs with bands like Bring and Sleeping with Sirens. Sleeping with Sirens are one of the most overrated bands right now and it's very easy to see why I believe they just so overy hyped another is their fans the fanbase only know of one member of the band. And for one I have seen them I should know Bring Me its difficult one but I feel alot of people I know who fans of them just talk about olly sykes all time. I also find it irrating that every Bring me fan goes and says that they underrated but the actual fact they kind of are overated. Got respect for Bring Me for what they do fair play to them it's just not my cup of tea
***** It's just an expression. I'm not really questioning the mental capacity of their fans, I was just pointing out that when you compare the technique used to make the music to other bands, five finger death punch tend to come up short.
i personally think that suicide silence and whitechapel also get a lot shit that they dont deserve especially from elitists that think that anything deathcore is garbage
Not a deathcore fan, but that doesn't mean it's garbage or anything. It just doesn't appeal to me, only a couple bands do (Mitch Lucker era Suicide Silence & Whitechapel (although I don't consider them deathcore, idk why everyone does, they seem more like a groove-death metal fusion type group because they have some slower tempos and use growls/guttural lows more)).
P.S. when I buy shirts at Hot Topic, Spencers ETC I only get the shirts of bands I like, not because they'res a pentagram on it and my parents will be pissed about it.
Really good video! I felt a little pissed when you first said Pantera, but I completely agree. I see people mentioning Tool and I'd have to agree that they are overrated as hell! The fans act like Tool's music is so creative and obscure, but it's really not.... Oh well!
Completely agree with Bullet For My Valentine I felt tht there temper temper album was a bit lack luster and tht it maybe would've been done better but sadly not. Keep up the good work though
Boy, I just know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I think Cradle of Filth is very overrated, even the metalcore/deathcore fucks at the high school I went to absolutely loved them and those guys didn't even know what black metal was. They probably thought it was "ultra death metal" or something, lol.
dont see why you would get shit for saying that man .im a cradle fan and they are getting worse every album maybe cause dani keeps changing the fucking line up to much.but no way would i expect metalcore and deathcore fans to like them haha thats pretty crazy.
Pantera deserves the hype, definitely never overrated, they were still standing throughout all the sub-genres hitting the scene. The reason why Pantera is becoming popular again, like all other older popular metal bands is because the newer bands suck asshole.. They all rip off of the same styles of the same few bands, metallica and pantera being the biggest ones, and a couple other bands.. Not much diversity, appealing only to douchebags and the like.. I hated it when some of my aquaitances would try and start a band and they sounded just like the rest, all they did was illegibly scream and it is all terrible.. Many metalheads are reverting back 20+ years ago because that is when metal used to be fucking amazing
Unto The Locust is Machine Head's 7th album, not their 2nd I.Burn My Eyes II.The More Things Change III.The Burning Red IV.Supercharger V.Through The Ashes of Empires VI.The Blackening -VII.Unto The Locust- VIII.Bloodstone&Diamonds and Machine Head formed in like 92
+FirebirdCamaro1220 Are you new to this ridiculos pitty fight(wich MH's fans created), that MH as died after their third album or their really "first" album was "TTAOE"?
Honestly, mate, this is the reason there is so much aggression and divide between the underground and the mainstream. You've complained in other videos about how we should all just get along, and how the old school should respect the new school and vice versa, but there are fundamentally different views (even worldviews) at play. The quality of underground metal was very high because the aspect of exclusivity created an impetus for bands to explore without bastardising. People who dabble in every style of "metal" almost NEVER manage to get to the essence of something. How on earth are Venom overrated? How on earth are Motorhead overrated? Overrated = if the value attributed to the totality of an artist's output is too high. You can't consider the value attributed to bands by people who have only heard 2 songs. Motorhead's contributions are beyond anything most people have ever considered. There is massive variation in their music, from mournful dirges, to fully realised speed metal, to ripping punk, to total droning doom and a lot in between. As for Venom... seriously? Yes, there were plenty of other bands who inspired Black Metal. An entire first wave.. the thing is, the underground already know these bands. We rate Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Samhain, Torr, Master's Hammer, etc etc. Why should that mean that Venom is overrated? No one was doing what Venom were doing. Venom's contribution wasn't just Satanic aesthetics - listen to the riffs. NOTHING in 1981 sounded like 'Welcome to Hell'. It was the most extreme release up until that point. Slayer aren't overrated. Slayer haven't made a good album since 1990, but all of their material up until that point is mind blowing. 'Show No Mercy' was the best NWOBHM album ever made, and it wasn't even British. They perfected a style they weren't a part of. That's impressive. 'Hell Awaits' is proto Death Metal without sounding embryonic. It's a masterpiece from start to finish, and no one else was playing like that. 'Reign in Blood' was a total assault - not their best album, but mindblowing, and not overrated. 'South of Heaven' and 'Seasons in the Abyss' were an evolution to a slightly slower style, but they managed to create some of the most eerie atmospheres with amazingly crafted riffs.
pierce the veil and escape the fate are my favorite bands right now but yeah they arent metal, they are mainly punk but metalized which is what i liked.i wasnt feeling the way metal was going, i was trying to find new music and the new albums by my then favorite bands A7X and BFMV were disappointments, BB was dead, mago de oz died when jose andreas left, every new band i heard was taking things to extremes that didnt clicked with me, i was looking for a better balance. and then i found SWS, escape the fate and dead by april, loved em but i knew it was gonna be a very controversial thing on the internet, fans calling them heavy cus of the way they look and my mother calling it noise, my metal friends calling it pop cus it is less heavy than what they heard.... but idc its the music my head likes to hear so fuck it
Pantera revived Metal in the 90's, and their sound is just unique. Of course there are bands making music more complex than them and stuff but no one ever is able to replicate the sound they have created. That good old Pantera feeling with the presence of the Aboth Brothers puts any other band in the pocket in my opinion
If a band is "really good" but fans think they are "great" that isn't that overrated. Overrated would be thinking a bad to average band is really good.
Hahhahahaha i laughed so hard when you mentioned Bullet for my Valentine, Soooo true man, they fell off hard, and they brought down Black Tide with them, black tide had so much promise until the Singer from Bullet messed with their heads and made them a carbon copy of how Bullet sounds
Uh overrated. Let's split that word in two: "over" and "rated". Despite popularity, any bad that is given more credit then they deserve are overrated. A band that's considered great when they're just "okay", is overrated. An underground act that some will call amazing when it's actually decent, is overrated. Popularity has nothing to do with it, I have no idea where you thought that.
I quite like a few bands that you mentioned (Chelsea Grin, Lamb Of God and maybe another one) but I do agree, they are overrated. So I'm not going to get all defensive and all that bullshit but intact just say, this was a great video. Keep up the good work c:
+Ajay Gonzalez I think they are boring. I can't listen to the whole album (Ashes of the Wake is the one I bought). I always want to listen to something else.
Ashes of the Wake is the only great album. As the Palaces Burn has 3 great songs, as well as Wrath or Sacrament. But their albums for the most part suck. Live performances are good.
I Just discovered something... "Overrated" actually doesn't mean anything. Some bands have a more accessible sound, so they earn a lot of fans quickly. But then they're called "Overrated' because they have more fans than they should if we refer to some people that are not adept of their music. Every band is overrated.
I would say that some faceless fans. I love planetary duality but holy shit as soon as authotheism dropped people say they suck. I love the fact they do what they want. I enjoyed the progression from each album.
Maybe this is just me being fanboy and making them over rated but in my opinion bands like lamb of god, mastodon, born of osiris (with the discovery and parts of tomorrow we die alive) and periphery are what is pushing metal to it's limits and making people see what metal can be. I think that the fact they are so talked about and copied is because people are wanting to see where they can take this sound and where they can take metal I general. Great vid as always CKN, just voicing my opinion ;). Also 5 finger death punch is over rated and bad.
Pre-2000's: Nirvana. Great band. Extremely overrated.
Not metal.
No.
Merlin Ambrosius Sorry, but they are, whether you *think* they're "metal" or not... metal isn't a word that each metalhead gets to define on their own. There are requirements for a genre and even though they're borderline hard-rock, A7X fits the "heavy metal" bill.
Brandon Griffin also there latest album was really based on there classic rock and metal routes that inspired them.
I have seen Mastodon live 3 times now, still love them. The most recent concert i saw was a month ago and they sounded the best at that show.
You guys are pretty prole if you don't like Mastodon. They wrote the best metal album of 2000-2010. It's over, plebs.
Fahumsixtysix I don't think anybody said they didn't like Mastodon. I was just saying that their live performance didn't wow me.
Mastodon is the only band where I love/hate every other album...its so odd...
Remission/...Meh
Leviathan/Love
Blood Mountain/...Meh
Crack The Skye/Good
The Hunter/...Meh
Once More Round the Sun/Favorite!!!
I remember talking to another fan at a show, and she said something along the lines like "only Opeth can write long songs," and i'm thinking, "what?" Yes, they are very good musicians and songwriters, and the albums that I've listened to are very good and I like them a lot, but its as if Opeth has become the benchmark for many fans, and I'm thinking, "oh come on people, they aren't the best thing since sliced bread."
And I also agree with you on Trivium.
I'm including rock and metal bands
1- Halestorm
2- In This Moment
3- The Pretty Reckless
4- Linkin Park
5- Ghost
6- Five Finger Death Punch
7- Rob Zombie
8- Avenged Sevenfold
9- Lamb of God
10- Volbeat
djent in general is overrated as a "genre"
Wtf is djent ? It's still kinda new to me lol
Totally agree.
"Dude have you seen that video for the Messhugah song Bleed? It's fucking bruuuutal!"
"Dude I know, they use poly-rhythms so you know they are the best band ever!"
Sums up the djent overrating and the Messhugah worship.
Djent is great.
five finger death punch is repetitive, all their songs sound the same, and they are probably the most overrated band now.
Slipknot, hands down the most overrated "Metal" band in history
fritz novak Hands Fucking down overrated.
I don't mind slipknot but carry on
i love slipknot because it got me in to metal although it's probably is overrated
Four words: Bring Me the Horizon
I love Fear Factory
Personally Suicide Silence's new singer is fantastic and the band is way better now. Also what about Meshuggah?
Meshuggah was on the first list.
Victor Moonlight Meshuggah formed before 2000.
coverkillernation I was not familiar with the history of Meshuggah so that is my fault.
I've just gotten into Arch Enemy, and I have to say, I do prefer Alissa to Angela, mostly because Alissa's vocals are slightly better.
Don't get me wrong, I really dig them, but a lot of their fans need to chill out - they are still just a band.
you should do top 10 underated metal bands and put bands such as bolt thrower, bathory, testament etc. I would love to see that!
Yes! You're back, great video as always!
I nearly had a heart attack when you said Opeth. I agree with what you said about how you respect the band's experimentation, though.
Bring me the Horizon! Their fanboys are the worst! D:
Good post. How about underrated bands? Testament, CoC, Blaze Maiden, Biohazard (maybe?), etc...
Lol im a die hard Trivium fan but you're right haha. In waves and VF were nothing compared to Shogun and Ascendancy. Except theyve been putting snippets of new stuff and its a lot more Shogun vibe which has my hopes up higher than ever before
Where can I find these snippets?
The NinjaSasquatch Instagram on Paolos and Corey's accounts
Great video man, definitely go with a part 2.
Every project from the members of pantera post-pantera.
Down was good.
I believe Lamb of God and Pantera have the hype they do because they basically moved the metal scene in a different direction. Both are still amazing bands but now there is competition out there.
Thank you for really making me understand the term "overrated".
I'm surprised you haven't reviewed an August Burns Red album by now. Rescue And Restore was, in my opinion, one of the best metal albums of 2013, "core" or not
If you're going to say Lamb of God, might as well throw Black Label Society, Five Finger Death Punch and Hellyeah in there
BLS ??? Really ????
Brenda Cole Yes i agree!! BLS super overrated. Personally think Zakk's vocals suck.
nathan00723 exactly
Now believe me, SOAD is an amazing band, and they're probably in my Top 10 bands, but I feel some fans fall under one of these categories:
1. They claim to be big fans, but the only song they like or know is either Chop Suey! or B.Y.O.B.
2. They don't fully understand the message behind some of their songs (not a huge issue to fret about though)
3. They claim to like them to go with the flow of others.
And Mastodon are Horrible singers live.
Do the Hunting party review by Linkin Park, the album isn't out yet, but you can find it on youtube like always.
I really like your reviews, thanks
They are phenomenal band man. Synyster Gates is criminally underrated. Probably because there are lots of people that are lovers of the past.
i would say Agalloch. I checked out "The Mantle" because of the high praise, but I just don't get it. It isn't bad, but it isn't special either.
THANK YOU, overrated as fuck, I tried time and time again with that band to try and understand what I was missing or not hearing, nothing.
Kvelertak underrated? I don't know about that.
Kvelertak fans, such as myself, are pretty passionate but too many people write them off just because they aren't taking themselves too seriously. Other bands I mentioned simply aren't getting the hype they deserve.
I guess that's true but I do feel they've been getting a lot of acclaim as of late.
Isis, Converge, Baroness , and Torche are pretty overrated amongst metal fans, actually.
I agree about A Day to Remember. I really enjoy their older music but they can be overrated.
You should have included A7X, DragonForce, Slipknot, Linkin Park, etc
He included a7x and slipknot on the last vid
+SuperGamingGuy I don't judge bands on heaviness either. but to call a band like linkin park Metal is pretty absurd
Didn't get how Opeth and Mastodon are overrated because some fans are doing this and that but whatever....
Joseph Kliche Where's the Mayhem? Where's the Burzem?
Well, one killed the other, so the grave? Isn't Varg on his 5th church?
I can't really comment on their music much. I'm not much of a fan of black metal. At least that kind of BM.
Five Finger Death Punch and/or any Metalcore band that has a T-shirt available to wear at Hot Topic.
Blackbullnova69 Five Finger Death Punch is pretty bad, but they aren't exactly metalcore.
@@28604 what's better than?
@@28604 i have seen better never mind
@@Trollgaming1987 I'm very confused now and also that comment is 3 years old lol
@@28604 i know its 3 years old i realized there is better bands then 5 finger even though five finger is pretty decent a7x is better for example (i am biased with that statement)
Is Godsmack overrated?? Think so but I'd like to hear your opinion on them
Not overrated, just a pile of hot stinking shit
PANTERA is not overated AT ALLL
They weren’t a band long enough to be overrated
A7X ANIMALS Lol, that doesn’t mean much coming from an Avenged Sevenfold fan. Both of those bands fanbases are excessive in their praise.
uhh
@@rileyallen3932 they were together about 20 years (formed in the early 80s as a hair metal band, pre-Anselmo)
@@doranrouthe9737 ???
If you were old enough to experience the effect that PANTERA had when they first came out, you would not say they were overrated.
They almost singlehandedly kept metal relevant in the non-underground world during the entire 1990s.
One of the most influential metal bands of all time.
I gonna throw this in I been to many gigs with bands like Bring and Sleeping with Sirens.
Sleeping with Sirens are one of the most overrated bands right now and it's very easy to see why I believe they just so overy hyped another is their fans the fanbase only know of one member of the band. And for one I have seen them I should know
Bring Me its difficult one but I feel alot of people I know who fans of them just talk about olly sykes all time. I also find it irrating that every Bring me fan goes and says that they underrated but the actual fact they kind of are overated. Got respect for Bring Me for what they do fair play to them it's just not my cup of tea
"There's nothing wrong with taking things to the extreme when you love your band". CKN still bashes slipknot and A7X fans for loving those bands.
Five finger death punch
They're not overrated, everyone with half a brain knows they're shite.
***** Oh come on, they're pretty poor, let's be honest here.
They are a guilty pleasure.
***** It's just an expression. I'm not really questioning the mental capacity of their fans, I was just pointing out that when you compare the technique used to make the music to other bands, five finger death punch tend to come up short.
***** :>
the new chelsea grin album got leaked and I can say that it is really good.
I think you have a chance of liking it.
I almost wanted to kill myself when you said Periphery lol.
i personally think that suicide silence and whitechapel also get a lot shit that they dont deserve especially from elitists that think that anything deathcore is garbage
If Metal Archives is any indication, Machine Head is underrated, I think every album has under 50% on there
There is a ridiculous fight in their fanbase if they are under or overrated.
wtf lol
When you were talking about Suicide Silence and Whitechapel, what is the name of the film you were talking about?
with pierce the veil. some fans need to chill out. I am a fan but they aren't metal. pop punk
Bruh don’t you mean post hardcore?
What do you think of the band in this moment? and how do you feel about the band HIM and their self made style called "love metal"?
Where in the video do you talk about each band?
P.S. when I buy shirts at Hot Topic, Spencers ETC I only get the shirts of bands I like, not because they'res a pentagram on it and my parents will be pissed about it.
I liked your video, but i think a better title for this would be: "Bands from the 2000's with the worst fanbases"
Temper temper was utter garbage. I like the band, but I can't stand temper temper.
+Damian Paterno Temper Temper is a joke. Coming from a fan.
Dude, you should review Machine Head's second album "Unto The Locust".
Unto The Locust is Machine Head's 7th album, not their 2nd
I.Burn My Eyes
II.The More Things Change
III.The Burning Red
IV.Supercharger
V.Through The Ashes of Empires
VI.The Blackening
-VII.Unto The Locust-
VIII.Bloodstone&Diamonds
and Machine Head formed in like 92
+FirebirdCamaro1220 Are you new to this ridiculos pitty fight(wich MH's fans created), that MH as died after their third album or their really "first" album was "TTAOE"?
Lol
'South of Heaven' and 'Seasons in the Abyss' were an evolution to a slightly slower style, but they managed to create some of the most eerie atmospheres with amazingly crafted riffs.
pierce the veil and escape the fate are my favorite bands right now but yeah they arent metal, they are mainly punk but metalized which is what i liked.i wasnt feeling the way metal was going, i was trying to find new music and the new albums by my then favorite bands A7X and BFMV were disappointments, BB was dead, mago de oz died when jose andreas left, every new band i heard was taking things to extremes that didnt clicked with me, i was looking for a better balance. and then i found SWS, escape the fate and dead by april, loved em but i knew it was gonna be a very controversial thing on the internet, fans calling them heavy cus of the way they look and my mother calling it noise, my metal friends calling it pop cus it is less heavy than what they heard.... but idc its the music my head likes to hear so fuck it
have you done any videos about helloween or power metal in general?
as a huge machine head, pantera and lamb of god fan.. I agree with everything said XD.
Pantera revived Metal in the 90's, and their sound is just unique. Of course there are bands making music more complex than them and stuff but no one ever is able to replicate the sound they have created. That good old Pantera feeling with the presence of the Aboth Brothers puts any other band in the pocket in my opinion
I definitely do not get all the djent hype to be honest. I listen to it every now and than, I just don't get it.
What about Emmure?? Or Dillinger Escape Plan??
How are you rating them? you say over or under rate alot. Id love to know how you rate bands so I can learn from you.
Underoath belongs here
I quite like a few bands that you mentioned (Chelsea Grin, Lamb Of God and maybe another one) but I do agree, they are overrated. So I'm not going to get all defensive and all that bullshit but intact just say, this was a great video. Keep up the good work c:
Rock and roll and meatal rock and stupid damn contry is anouing
Will you be reviewing Opeth's upcoming album, Pale Communion?
Killswitch Engage
I really like Atilla and Asking Alexandria, but yeah, they're pretty overrated xD. And maybe it's just me, but I don't really care for band shirts.
Coverkillernation is underrated
How in any way is lamb of God overrated?
+Ajay Gonzalez I think they are boring. I can't listen to the whole album (Ashes of the Wake is the one I bought). I always want to listen to something else.
Idk.
There fanbase is a little crazy.
Ashes of the Wake is the only great album. As the Palaces Burn has 3 great songs, as well as Wrath or Sacrament. But their albums for the most part suck. Live performances are good.
Viewing Account The only album that sucks imo is resolution.
Slipknot they are amazing but they shouldn't be considered one of the best metal bands ever
I can agree with that i seen worse though
"A okay to Shitay" lmfao
Agree with CKN 100%. Death to False Metal. If you want something REAL, this should be metal album of the year: Insomnium - Shadows Of The Dying Sun
Periphery wins at making technical music. That has cemented their place. I enjoy them...but not in the same way I enjoy Van Halen.
I am a Black Veil Brides fan...and I've seen the comments (predominantly from females) on the videos...
*C R I N G E* 🙄🤦♂️
