      I got the sensation from his introductory scene that this actor was a big deal in Germany. He's certainly got that gravitas like the greats I know from Hollywood. The show is full of beautifully played small parts. I think Bo is a really talented director in many ways, and directing actors themselves must be one of those great strengths of his.
      Also, what other shows are this long and directed by one single person all the way every single episode? That's very rare right?

    About European casting awards, The Bafta TV Awards have a category since 2020 for best casting for a scripted program, though I'm not sure if the nominees can be from outside the UK. No nomination for DARK either way though. There are international Emmys but they don't have a casting category, I believe.

While a big part of the cast are rather new faces in the German acting world (especially because of the age of a considerable part of the main cast), among the older actors are major names that any German that consumes any amount of German TV will recognize. The other household name would be (even though basically completely obscured by the mask) Adam, who is played by Dietrich Hollinderbäumer.

      Heyyyy physics stud! I'm a 2nd year and I've been a fan of the show for a while and yet I'm still looking for someone who's studying physics to talk to about Dark. Nobody I've talked to irl on my courses so far has seen it. Language majors who've seen it don't count.
      Anyway what I'm getting at is I think Dark has surprisingly not awful physics. At the least it doesn't use mumbo jumbo and actually has relevant terminology. Tannhaus' brief explanation of the Tannhaus machine was among the most nearly scientific explanations of science plot devices I've heard. What I'm getting at is I get the impression Jantje really did read a lot about the subject and uses actual understanding in a creative writing context to stretch and bend real stuff that she actually has a valid understanding of.
      Of course something like the Expanse is much harder more solid sci fi. But the physics and the philosophy of physics in Dark is about as good as I would want out of a fictional story.

    Not surprised they weren't paying enough attention to it, seemingly no one ever does, but the girl from the future shouted "Jonas!" after he went through the god particle when she shouldn't have known his name. I'm pretty sure they just told each other their name during the time they were together, before Jonas went into the "blob". I mean, it would be the most normal thing to do for anyone in that situation to at least reveal your name if not anything else about yourself. Because I don't think they were just silent the whole time. So, just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. That's why I never thought it to be unusual that she said his name.

    • @alliona502
      @alliona502 Год назад +13

      @@beni6493 I don't know if you've watched the show, but a non-spoiler answer is that her saying "Jonas" implies that she knows who he is, when he never told her. This means that she has met him before, an older version of himself who told her who he is or that someone from her past told her who Jonas is.

    • @morphman86
      @morphman86 Год назад +9

      @@frankj10000 Sure, but the show made it a point that Jonas refused to tell his name, which is why that particular scene holds some weight.
      They show everything else, in minute detail. Even things that might not happen for another season or two. Like the guys pointed out, it wouldn't be amiss if that apple Noah threw away in 1987 would grow into a tree in modern day, that's the level of detail they show.
      So it would be odd to make a point of showing his refusal to say his name for 2 episodes, then not show when he told her...

However, in the dark universe time travel is possible and energy can travel from the future to the past, thus contradicting this principle.

    The DARK series received an award from the *Grimme-Preis in 2018.* In the fiction category. The Grimme-Preis is an award for television programs in Germany and is considered the most prestigious media prize in Germany. In the first stage, viewers, broadcasters and producers can submit proposals. In the second stage, three nomination committees discuss in three sessions lasting several days which proposals will be nominated, i.e. submitted to the jury for a decision. Between 50 and 60 programs are selected for the three competition areas of fiction, entertainment and information and culture. In the third stage, the three juries decide on the final award in meetings lasting several days. A maximum of twelve Grimme-Preise will be awarded in all competition areas.
    The nomination committees and juries appointed by the Grimme Institut for this task are made up of television critics, journalists, media scientists and educational experts.

    I don't exactly know what Claudia? said that prompted the discussion about the laws of thermodynamics, but I think it was in reference to the third law describing that entropy only ever increases.
    If you put all the O2 molecules in a room in one corner and wait a while the O2 will mingle with all the other particles in the air until eventually they are equally distributed, maximizing disorder.
    The relevance for Dark comes in in that entropy is used to explain the direction of time; entropy only ever increases with time and because it always increases, time can only go in one direction. The god particle decreasing entropy is meant to imply that it messes with/reverts time.

    I'm watching Dark for the first time, and belatedly watching along with Blindwave. This episode kinda blew my mind. Did future Jonas try to meet his mom but failed to get there in time, before she shot herself? Is that why he was looking on the floor? When they return home, will they run into too-late future Jonas at her house? And when future Jonas took her to the 80s to see Mekkel, she cried like Mekkel was her son. And someone in season 1 made a comment about "his real mother," if I remember correctly. ...so... then... uh... if Hannah is Mekkel's real mom, then she's Jonas's mom and grandma... and she married her son... ermagherd. 0_0 Is that why Mikkel killed himself - did he find out? I felt bad for Ulrich, before remembering he tried to kill a child. He seems to think he deserved the punishment. I also love that future Jonas has a rope scar across his neck, and his near-execution by hanging is shown here. Also, Charlotte doesn't know who her parents are, and neither do I. WTF is Claudia up to? Ah! What is everyone other than young Jonas up to! AAAhhhh!! lol 27:59 Does Aaron mean heat/energy is always declining? Eric's statement that entropy is the "heat death of the universe" sounds right. Entropy is not always declining, it's always increasing. Entropy is a measure of the dispersal of energy, and since energy is always going from "high to low" or "hot to cold," it's always dispersing - always "spreading out." So the "spread," or entropy, is always increasing. If the black hole in the show followed this law, then I think it would be expanding/unstable. But since it hasn't expanded/fizzled so far, maybe Calvin is right that some external energy source is counteracting it's entropy and the plant's shutdown will cause the apocalypse. 28:02 Does he mean muscle atrophy?

That culinary abomination (semi-affectionate) is called a Toast Hawaii and it was a biiiiiig thing in the 80s in Germany. Don't ask me why, probably for similar reasons why the US have some buckwild weird 80s recipes too. Anyway, to make it you take a slice of toast, put a slice of cooked ham on it, then one slice of pineapple and then a slice of cheese. Then you bake it (or heat it in a pan, I'm not sure which one's the "original" way to make it) to melt the cheese. And there you go!

    You guys have had a couple really good discussions after the reactions where you actually say some insightful things about the characters and the narrative. But, now you're back to hyper-focusing on minutiae and corny jokes. I mean, it's ok and kinda entertaining, I guess. I'm hoping future episodes inspire more depth in your commentary as you all are obviously capable of such.

    23:00 I find Erik's quote about the second law of thermodynamics irritating. What should "the energy burns out" mean?
    The second law states that energy (which according to the first law cannot be created or destroyed) can only move one way; from hot to cold; from high concentrations of energy to low concentrations of energy. Tranmission of heat is, like chemical reactions and other a spontaneous process. The law says that all spontaneous occuring processes are irreversible.
    Entropy is the grade of these processes in an open(!) or closed system. It describes how much energy or matter(!) is already transformed into other forms of energy (or matter). In a closed system there is a maximal state of entropy when the energy is basically evenly spread across the system and therefore in equilibrium. Which is why I find it odd when people say that entropy was chaos when it describes a process where the end is an oderly "everything is the same". Then again the chaos thing stems apparently from an application to mechanical system. (*roll eyes* mechanics)
    Btu to really grasp entropy you have to understand that it is a statefunction that involves another statefunction of thermal dynamics and that why I simply cannot properly describe it... because I simply learned that and never understood it.
    And here comes real catch: all of this describes processes OVER TIME.
    So when Claudia says that inside the particle cloud the second law of thermal dynamics is off, we could immediately assume that this is because time inside the particle cloud isn't the constant flow we assume when applying the second law of thermodynamics.
    The main gripe I have with her statement is that her assumption that the particle cloud was (creating a) a wormhole immediately allows for energy passing to her point of observasion or away from it to the other side(s) of the wormhole. She cannot exclude that the particle cloud was using energy from the other side(s) of the wormhole to maintain it's mass. But yeah... the show apparently means to say that the particles itself are suspended from time.

      Oh and for anyone wondering: Its slices of white bread toasted, with a bit of butter, cooked ham, pineapple slice (from a can, the sugery stuff), Kraft cheese slices (Cheddar works well), and a number of cocktail cherries on top to your liking; heat the oven to about 390°F (200°C) or fan oven to 356°F (180°C). Bake for ten minutes. Enjoy.
