This lifestyle is strictly for healthy people. I am someone with a serious chronic illness and I wouldn’t last 1 day doing this. I won’t go into deals of all the reasons, but suspect not many people with serious illnesses would last long in that environment. So as tough as it seems it’s truly a privilege to be able to do so. If I was healthy I definitely dream of living off grid like that but probably on a more populated island like in Hawaii or the Caribbean or even there are some cool Islands in Washington State or in Europe.
I binged all of your videos because your life is so interesting! I grew up in a small village in the Philippines before moving abroad and was so shocked An and his folks use way too many similar words with my native tongue. Thank you for sharing your story!
I remember growing up where my grandmother had no electricity. Everything was kerosene. We had running water, but you had little fish and other debris coming through the pipes . She tied a cloth bag at the faucet to act like a filter.
I really love your videos. I found you by accident and now I have gone back to your first and watching each of your videos. Your life is so interesting I admire what you and An have accomplished.
Seven years Off grid in The Channon. It was quite hard because we were setting up, in a paddock. It stressed our relationship and our children Before that: 5 years off grid in a north coast community where we all contributed. This was much better than a husband wife team. Before that, another 5v years off grid in the rainforest, mostly alone. I am so tough and adapted now, I do not notice if I have electricity or not! Undeterred, I would love to go off grid again but would like to do this in a way that is as wonderful as possible for my child.
Yes being off grid definitely isn’t always easy. It can indeed put a lot of stress on relationships. At the same time it can also cultivates some really strong bonds. In our experience, there are always positives and negative’s, wherever you live and whatever you do 🫶🏼
Your videos came across my feed. Been watching the last hour. Different. Interesting. An is funny! My wife is Filipino, but we live here in the states. Her familly lives on the island Leyta. Wonder if I could live in the province? Anyway, I subscribed and look forward to following your videos.
Hey Gary! Thanks for your kind words! Yes, life here is different to say the least 😅 for me it’s a big adjustment at times, other times it feels so natural and easy. Anyways happy to hear you’re following along.
wow that is called life,i think i love to live in the same place with no electricity and remote as long as lots of resources like your place now so many coconuts and tress and your house is amazingly beautiful
We love how you edit your videos start towards ends❤❤❤❤your content is so fascinating to us❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wonder if you already had a channel and edited videos because these are such great great videos!! Your life is really interesting and calm to watch. I bet you go to bed every night happy and fulfilled. And tired haha. I can see your channel blowing up so I'm happy to say I'm here before your fame 😜. It's a great dream of mine to live one day away from the social standards, like on a boat or something different, like this. To be self sufficient and self reliant. I wonder if you made a video explaining how you got from Belgium to here. If not, you should make one, I'm really interested. Ok, off to binging the rest of your videos. Best regards from Croatia!
Thank you for such a nice comment! Learned to edit videos from scratch when we started the channel almost a year ago now! And yes, being self reliant and living off grid is hard work but it is also so rewarding! Hope you can make it happen one day too!
I live in my piece of land, in a shipping container that, with some help, I turned into a house. In the island of Puerto Rico. I live off grid. No city electricity, no city water. I also colect rain water. Last year I bought and installed a solar system and a big 600 gallons water tank. It has been very good. To live like this we have to be brave, curious and adaptable. Its try, learn all the time.
how lucky iam that i found your channel what a beautiful inspiration could me my life i also dream about my coffee in the morning already the night before now im even more excited to watch you two !!!! very very lovely, juana
@@OurIslandLife come to south Sumatera sometimes bro and sis, we don't have beaches like Mentawais, our neighboring lampung do, but our foods is worth a try tho 😉, success for the channel.
Now it is quite a different time in early 2000 huh. At that time I live like you in the deep jungle of Lampung! The lifestyle is really the same, and those carosene lamps haha there's only one person that have a generator, a midwife. Imagine how rowdy it got when we use that for a football match on tv! But on the other hand the internet and digital world was really limited in Indonesia back then too so it doesn't feel like I'm missing out much if we compare to how my grands lived in a little village at the foot of a mountain in Java. I can imagine the contrast of that time to people in a more modern way of living though.
I have a campervan with solar so I have experienced living off grid. I have been living small for 2 years now and I much prefer it this way. I have used solar shower bags that I put out in the sun during the day and let the water heat up for a nice hot shower. Since it is hot there you probably enjoy a cold shower. Will you put a ceiling fan in the new house or maybe you wouldn't have enough ppwer to run it.
Amazing! We might put a ceiling fan in but tbh we don’t feel too hot inside the house. The big roof keeps everything in the shade and the windows always provide some airflow :)
I wish you would describe more of what you are gathering. Sometimes it just looks like a handful of greens. What are they and what are they used for? What are the fruits are you picking?
Yes! Problem is we often only know the Mentawai name and since there is no dictionary or anything written in Mentawai, we often don’t know the English name of the plants 🫣
I've lived for 7 years on my 32 ft sailboat. When I started the rebuild, I didn't have electricity at first. Now I have 3 solar panels and a 1kw system..
@@OurIslandLife nah now i know 😄 island life the best, i have plan too, if i have sold my house i Will moving. You should visit Karimunjawa or 1000 island
We have loadshedding here. Unexpected power cuts. Water get cut off as well. Days like that are difficult. We are so used to electricity and tap water. I have been investing in solar
Yes it’s probably much more difficult when you get unexpected power outtages when you are used to electricity and you need it for everything to work. Maybe good to get a battery bank as a back up?
@OurIslandLife Yes, I'm really educationing myself on solar power. It's not very widespread in my country. People only started investing since our electricity grid is under pressure. I also live in an apartment, so certain installations are not allowed. I have been looking at power stations for now, just for lights and keeping devices charged
Yay thank you for subscribing! The first year or so of living here we would go to the village about once a week and charge all our things there. But we weren’t doing RUclips at the time. After that as explained in the video we got a small solar panel so we could charge devices one by one during the day. And now, we just got a more complete solar system so we have power 24/7 🥳
@@OurIslandLife Yes, please make a video about that! I discovered your channel today and am binge watching, have seen about a dozen of your videos so far. You are both very engaging to watch. Love from a Texas girl currently in Florida. ❤
All the kids that are the school going age live on another island where there are villages and schools. If their parents aren’t from there, they either stay with a family member or do some kind of boarding school.
We’d really like to find out but not sure how. If you have any ideas, let us know! From what we can see on their coverage map it doesn’t look like it would. Would be great to meet someone who has tried it in the area.
I grew up without electricity or buying food outside that we did not grow. I am thankful I got to experience that. we used cooking oil we made, herbal medicines, etc etc. Now the new generation dont have a clue and I feel sorry for them when the shit hit the fan, they wont be able to survive.
Folks, at least myself, are interested in the villagers and villages on the island. How about taking the viewers on a scenic boat ride around the island with a few stops along the trip. Inquiring minds want to know the cost of living: land taxes, food, energy and internet costs. I know you have a freezer but have you thought about a box in the ocean to keep your fish after catching for a few days.
Cant imagine walking barefoot around, esp in the forest where there could be all kinds creepy crawlies around. Also you may step on some sharp objects like glass fragments or stones and injured yourself. It's indeed a primitive lifestyle in this modern day and age.
People are naturally fit when living this lifestyle, no need to go the gym like here in the U.S. 😂 Too much convenience is indeed inconcennient at time.
