The actor that played Rachel didn't see Heath in his Joker etire yet, so she was genuinely scared in that scene Also, in the interrogation scene, Bale was asked by Heath to actually hit him, so he did.
I remember seeing this opening weekend in 2008 when I was 12 years old and I was BLOWN TF AWAY by Heath Ledger. I'll never forget during the scene where the footage of him demanding Batman take off his mask, when he screamed "LOOK AT ME!!", you could hear a pin drop in the theater. No one said a WORD. That’s one of the best things about the joker in most iterations and especially in this movie. He’s not afraid of death. - He was strapped up ready to blow himself and the mob up in their first encounter if they tried anything. - in the hospital…. He puts Harvey Dent’s gun to his own head with Harvey’s own finger on the trigger (Keep in mind the Joker just blew up Harvey’s girl) and he even says “Now we’re talking” when Harvey tells him the coin will decide. - When Batman is coming at him on the motorcycle about to hit him, he says “come on, hit me!” And he even looks disappointed when Batman doesn’t. - And then as mentioned, when the Joker is falling to his death, he’s laughing. Someone who is afraid of death and even seems to welcome or laugh at it is hard to crack. I loved this aspect of him in the movie.
As many times as I've seen this movie, there's still one line that really hurts. When Harvey says "Tell your boy it's gonna be alright, Gordon. Lie, like I lied." That shit HURTS, man.
Factoid: The first scene where Commissioner Gordon meets Harvey Dent, the bookcase behind Gordon is a hint that Dent becomes Two Face. One side of the bookcase is neat and orderly, and on the other side, its quite messy. I never caught that the first few times I saw the movie. It was a clever way to hide that in plain sight.
One of the greatest movies I've ever watched, all the actors did a great job but let's be clear - as great as Joaquin Phoenix was as the Joker and of course all the others, no one will ever be able to beat Heath Ledgers Joker - that was perfection and a well deserved Oscar win, may he rest in peace Also, great reaction as always 🙂

I like that Rachel chose Harvey over Bruce. A common theme in Batman media is how he's too committed to *being* Batman. He may date, he may even have relationships, but everything comes second to "the mission", whether he's even aware of that reality or not. Rachel knew it, and she had more respect for herself than to be second to Bruce's obsession. She loved both of them, but in the end, she chose the one who loved her back. It was the right choice.
Morally No Her Personally Yes. SHE was the one who gaslight him into "doing whats right with his wealth" instead of revenge in his head in the first movie. Its definitely cheap that she couldn't live with that
@@fatty1040 Okay, I don't think you know what "gaslight" means. It's not "gaslighting" someone to remind them of the difference between right and wrong, between vengeance and justice, between personal pain and moral responsibility. The only person who was gaslit in this whole triangle was Harvey, by the Joker, into thinking that Jim Gordon and Batman were responsible for Rachel's death instead of the Joker. Rachel didn't trick anyone into doing or thinking anything (unless you count hiding Bruce's secret identity).
@@PaperbackWizard Yeah except she literally slapped him and said his father would be ashamed, Also demanding his wealth be used for her own ideals or have no friendship with her is pretty jacked. She even returned the Arrow head just to hurt Bruce symbolically saying thier friendship was dead.
@@fatty1040 That's not at all what she was saying. It was a birthday gift, showing him that she'd kept it all these years even while he was missing and presumed dead because that's how important he is to her. You want to call her slapping him some kind of abuse, go right ahead, but she was 100% right to tell him his father would be ashamed of him for trying to murder someone. Friends tell each other what they need to hear, even if it's harsh. She didn't make any demands of him except that he look beyond his own pain and realize that the person he wanted to "thank" for killing Joe Chill was the same person who created Joe Chill in the first place. @@PaperbackWizard She literally dropped off the "Gift" as goodbye 😂 thats why they made that scene all emotional. It even happens again in the dark knight. Ironically enough Harvey was more in Danger than batman with the mob.
4 things: 1: The sawed-off shotgun Joker takes from the Bank guy he uses throughout the film afterward. 2: When he arrived at Bruce Wayne's party it was the 1st time the cast had seen Heath Ledger as Joker. The actor for Alfred actually had lines of dialogue but was too caught off guard by his appearance to speak. 3: The video of Joker with the Batman wannabee was all Heath Ledger. They gave him a phone and told him to make the video. Did pretty damn well. 4: When Joker gives Harvey the revolver he is holding the hammer back. He always had a plan.
For a completely different Heath Ledger experience you should watch A Knight's Tale. Excellent movie, Alan Tudyk is always a bonus and the soundtrack is AMAZING!
@Dayspring God forbid you enjoy a movie with a strong moral, lasting friendship, a debt repaid and HUMOR. Seriously dude, in the immortal words of Sgt Hulka, Relax Francis.
I went to see the DArk Knight 3 times when it came out. the first was a midnight showing, so I walked outta there around 3 am. The Next times were a few days later. I saw it back to back. I had to pick up on all the little details. Even though we know how the story unfold, its still captivating as hell.
I saw it, and raved about it at work. So some of my workmates decided to go see it in IMAX format, and invited me along. I turned them down, because I knew I absolutely could not handle Ledger's Joker in IMAX. The stuff of psychotic nightmares.
That pencil reaction is the same one I had in the IMAX when I first saw this. First off, if you saw this in the IMAX, the intro scene where they zip-lined and the camera panned down was scary as hell... but when the pencil scene hit, I was genuinely shocked! I made a noise. Yep.
The Dark Knight is one of the greatest superheroes movies of all time. The story, screenplay, visual effects, musical score, mature themes, cinematography, action sequences, direction, and performance's ( particularly Heath Ledger's) was absolutely and positivity phenomenal and spectacular. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍👍😎💯
I'm not certain if it's overlooked or that no one "shows" a reaction to it but the Joker having different "scar" origins isn't JUST different for its own sake. Each time he tells the story it has direct influence from WHOM he's telling it to. He tells Gamble about an abusive father; probably something Gamble can relate to. Joker's guessing of course but it fits with the stereotype. He tells Rachel about a love interest that was very pretty; mirroring the fact he finds her pretty. He's essentially creating a narrative to tell his victims that THEY are the reason he's going to kill them. Their mind games; and for him to make up stories to fit individuals shows he's intelligent and creative. Hands down THE BEST JOKER EVER. A Joker who's not evil because he's crazy and CAN BE redeemed, but a man who CHOOSES to act immorally and chaotically.
Is skyhook a real thing? YES! I know people who were special forces and used it for extraction and it is pretty terrible - you have to wear a neck brace and it still hurts a lot.
Chris Nolan had a way of just hiring the right person for specific roles. Michael Jai is such a legit natural intimidating man, it was smart to have him (in wrestling terms) give the Joker the rub. The fears in his eyes while Joker tells his backstory. Amazing. Than another great underrated casting by having Tiny Lister (Deebo) on the Ferry boat you think he was gonna blow the innocent civilians up (because a character he mostly known for as Deebo) definitely would blow them up but they swerved us.
I hadn't seen The Dark Knight but I saw the Oscars where Ledger won and thought it was a pity Oscar because he had died recently. But it wasn't, one of the best performances by an actor ever. Imagine if we had another 2 or 3 Batman movies with his joker. Great movie.
I watched that film in a cinema and I remember me leaving it and didn’t know how to behave properly. Should I be amazed, sad or happy. This isn’t just a film, it’s one of the greatest films ever produced. Period.
The truck shot is probably the most amazing clip of any superhero movie and that's because it's all real, they actually flipped a truck in the middle of downtown Chicago, you can look up videos of how they planned it and actually accomplished it. The attention to even the most minute things and doing them to perfection is what makes this movie the pinnacle of all superhero movies and even most movies in general. That and the actual blowing up of a hospital was cool, that shot where he shrugs at the explosion delay is all real as they only had 1 take at it.
All the scenes with the bat vehicles are breathtaking in this movie. I love when he goes into a sideways slide on the bike and the wheels roll on a different axis, it's like WHOA WAT!!?
Nolan likes to use this wonderful thing called the Shepard tone which produces the illusion that the audio is constantly getting higher and higher. Its fantastic for creating rising tension and suspense!
Katie Holmes was replaced with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Holmes had a conflict with Mad Money, a film nobody remembers. Gyllenhaal checked with Holmes before she said yes.
This is the master piece that ive watched more than 20 times now Some movies can be the best at something but the dark knight is the best movie ever in my humble opinion Thank you so much because seeing someone react to it for the first time made me tear up with you Definitely Subscribing
Note: Some of the tracks in the soundtrack for The Dark Knight (2008) like 'Why So Serious?' are quotes from the movie. The same was so with the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) with one of the tracks being called 'Hoist The Colours.' Also, both soundtracks were composed by Hans Zimmer.
People often miss the fact that it wasn’t Batman who undid the jokers plans, but the intrinsic morality of the human heart. The failure in the prisoners dilemma ferry scheme affected jokers ability to function freely from that point on.
19:48 I wondered about Rachel the first time I saw these movies, too. With repeat viewings, she's frankly just not that into Bruce from the beginning. She loves him. He's been like a brother to her, but then he left for ten years and came on like gangbusters when he returned. By the time we meet her here, she's already moved on and is falling in love with Harvey. So, at this point when it feels like she has commitment issues - she doesn't. She's thinking much more clearly than Bruce, who's sadly chasing a dead dream with her. She's committed to Harvey.
Fun fact: I don't know which event it was at but there's audio of Mark Hamill performing This speech (@ 9:47) in HIS Joker voice. There are actually more than one. He also says "Why so serious!!!" It's Iconic really; the Best Joker voice paired to the best Joker Actor.
Wow, love how emotional you got at the end! This was a seminal film experience for me. I saw it at 16 years old with my friends while in college, and I became a film lover since :D Now awaiting your TDKR reaction :D
YES!!! Heath Ledger took home the Oscar posthumously as the Joker and did one hell of a job portraying the clown prince of crime. Saw this in the theaters with my parents and the scene with the pencil recieved applause from the audience.
I've seen other reaction channels skip on very important scenes like 9:25. I commend this channel on not skipping out on upmost captivating scenes like that, even if reaction itself isn't the most spectacular one. It isn't just about reaction itself, it's also about reminding the letting audience know about how badass the movie really is 👍
Loved the reaction from Lara Croft! But also on a more serious note, I did not see anyone else mention this and it's one of my fav Lil things about the film: Regarding the Hospital scene where Joker hands Dent a revolver and presses it against his own head, Harvey actually would not have been able to shoot the Joker at all because the Joker kept his finger on the back of the hammer which would have made it impossible for the gun to actually fire even if the trigger was pulled. That darn Joker was a schemer beyond belief and he was really good at making people believe they actually had a choice.
One thing I didn’t like about this movie is that, for me, I found Rachel unlikeable. When she got blown up, I just shrugged and was happy she wouldn’t be in anymore scenes.
Each actor who's played the Joker embodied one different aspect about him Cesar Romero: The Campy Prankster Jack Nicholson: The Mobster Heath Ledger: The Psychopath Jared Leto (ZSJL): The Devil's Advocate (basis: "You...need me to help you undo this world you created by letting her die. Poor Lois. And how she suffered so!") Joaquin Phoenix: The Broken Man
Nestor Carbonell who plays the mayor of Gotham, does not wear eyeliner. He got accused of the same thing when he played Richard Alpert on Lost. He just has really dark eyes.
The interrogation scene is one of my favorite scenes of all time. Ledger is so menacing, and it shows that the Joker is in control despite being locked in jail with dozens of police and Batman watching over him
8:48 Yes that was a real thing used by the C.I.A., U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy called the Fulton surface-to-air recovery system (STARS). It was used as a way of recovering downed pilots or other personnel in, as Fox said, hot spots and it worked pretty much the same way as they recovered batman. Later on, long range helicopters which are capable of refueling in mid-flight were available and were used more often in recovery missions which made the system rarely used and in 1996 they officially stopped using this system as a way of recovering.
I firmly believe the original plan involved Joker doing some *really* crazy shit in the second half of the third movie. Bane was great. Talia was also great. But Ledger's Joker is just.... just perfect.
Hey Maple, "Why so serious".... Let's put a smile on that face". To the Joker Chaos is the ladder that makes cowards out of all. SO he became an agent of chaos. This is the true test of the Joker, and what makes him such a legendary villain.
Maple. I love your reactions!! Not only are you incredibly beautiful but you have such a fun ,cute and engaging personality in your reaction videos!! Please don’t stop!
Heyo, it's Sir MoFo Dans the Fourth back to lay down some more trivia: -Joker's mask in the beginning is a reference to the mask that Cesar Romero's mask in an episode of the 1966 Batman show. He also played The Joker. -In the comics, Harvey's face was scarred in a court session by Sal Maroni. -In the scene where The Joker crashes the party, there were some actors who were supposed to say some lines but everyone was stunned because it was their first time ever seeing Heath Ledger in costume. Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal's reactions were real and she was looking at Nolan and the crew to see if they would stop filming because she was so uncomfortable when Ledger grabbed her. I'm sure some serious words were said afterwards. -In the comics, James Gordon Jr. is a serial killer. I know, I thought that was pretty fucked. -Since I mentioned, Gordon's son, I thought I'd mention his daughter, Barbara Gordon, Batgirl/Oracle. She was popularized by the 1966 show and adapted into comics, later becoming Jim's niece in Post-Crises. This was later re-retconned so she would be his daughter again. -In DC media, Joker has a few origins. He has ranged from a Red Hood, failed comedian, criminal mastermind, and chauffeur/hitman but for the most part, his fall into a vat of chemicals has remained pretty consistent throughout save for a couple exceptions. Obviously in this film, his back story is ambiguous. While the mystery is the appeal behind Joker, I've always thought that mystery was only good if there was an answer to be told and that the wait was worth it. It's like wine: reveal it prematurely and it feels dissatisfying but wait to long and the mystery becomes tired and ultimately not worth it. -The Joker tells Harvey that he is a man without a plan but if you look in one scene, he has everything scripted in a journal he's reading from which reveals that he is a liar. -There was a theory that the guy who played Reese was The RIddler because of "Mister Reese" as in "mysteries". Pretty goofy but it has its plausibility. It doesn't lead to anything so it doesn't matter.
Whew. Wow. This movie started as a masterpiece and just gets better and better and better with every viewing. Just hearing the final words got me this time. Like you said, "Thanks, Batman." It truly elevated what the public could expect from a "superhero movie."
One of the best portrayals of The Joker on the big screen, ever. The scene with the pencil tells you everything you need to know. The Wisecrack channel has a pair of very good discussions about The Dark Knight.
After the new Batman this is the second best movie (so far) IMO But this Joker is legendary. I remember first seeing this movie on a date that went terrible, but to be honest i didnt really care because the movie was F*cking awesome.
Fun trivia: This movie was shot almost entirely in Chicago. The hospital (Gotham General) that was blown up by the Joker was Cook County hospital and it was actually demo'd because it was an old piece of junk that was well past its prime.
"Yeah" after Gordon's wife smacks him???? We really need to stop normalizing women hitting their men. I know she was grieving but he did it for her and his son's safety. She's a grown woman, she should realize that.. I get this is a movie but it happens irl on the regular..
Normally I wouldn't justify it but I think it's an understandable reaction to finding out your husband faked his own death and made you grieve without telling you. Kinda sells the scene imo.
23:20 What’s even more fucked up is the fact that Gordon’s family was still compromised even after ALL THAT just to protect them… 25:00 and I also love how Joker tries to influence Batman in this scene in the same way he did Harvey like “…these cops are eventually gonna turn on you…” but Batman’s so godamn stubborn, literally the embodiment of justice, to the point where he’s just done talking and he just gets violent over the issue..And joker just maniacally laughs at him because he sees how crazy Batman truly is “LOOK AT YOU GO!!” It’s a classic example of Joker V Batman. Nolan nailed it forsure 👌 26:35 OOoooh and I forgot ab this dynamic as well. One of Joker’s mind games: he had his guys tell Rachel that the cops and Batman were going to have to choose between the two of them. So when Batman shows up to save Harvey he’s absolutely disgusted like “You bastards chose ME over her because I’m supposed to be the ‘important white knight and savior for Gotham’.” Sortve adds to his soreness towards Gordon and the rest of em…

Christopher FUCKING Nolan, man.

One of the greatest movies I've ever watched, all the actors did a great job but let's be clear - as great as Joaquin Phoenix was as the Joker and of course all the others, no one will ever be able to beat Heath Ledgers Joker - that was perfection and a well deserved Oscar win, may he rest in peace
Also, great reaction as always 🙂
I still don't know what it is about Heath's performance. Just something feels so real about it.
@@RJALEXANDER777 that’s because it was real. He already had mental problems but this performance pushed even further his state, it feels real because it is.
Morally No
Her Personally Yes.
Just because she was disappointed in him didn't mean she'd stopped caring about him, because that's what friends do. Bruce was being an idiot, and Rachel set him straight.
@@PaperbackWizard She literally dropped off the "Gift" as goodbye 😂 thats why they made that scene all emotional.
She rode that high horse of morality and made sure Bruce felt like an ass and when Batman actually does whats morally right (AKA not letting bad guy win) she doesn't like it going all "The man i love left" or some bs, who says that?
It even happens again in the dark knight. Ironically enough Harvey was more in Danger than batman with the mob.
Heath's performance never ceases to amaze me and is certainly one of the best in film histery
Watching those movies after seeing this, makes it hard to recognize heath as the same actor lol

"Sometimes truth just isn't good enough" one of the greatest Hollywood quote ever!
He just doesn't want to admit he cut himself shaving.

Amazing.

People often miss the fact that it wasn’t Batman who undid the jokers plans, but the intrinsic morality of the human heart.
The failure in the prisoners dilemma ferry scheme affected jokers ability to function freely from that point on.
"Batman is not vengeance!" (Patterson) "Am I a joke to you!" Lol 😆
19:48 I wondered about Rachel the first time I saw these movies, too. With repeat viewings, she's frankly just not that into Bruce from the beginning. She loves him. He's been like a brother to her, but then he left for ten years and came on like gangbusters when he returned. By the time we meet her here, she's already moved on and is falling in love with Harvey.
So, at this point when it feels like she has commitment issues - she doesn't. She's thinking much more clearly than Bruce, who's sadly chasing a dead dream with her. She's committed to Harvey.

Now I know I'm in love with maple because of how she reacted to the ending. This movie has one of the best endings out of any movie I've ever seen
One thing I didn’t like about this movie is that, for me, I found Rachel unlikeable. When she got blown up, I just shrugged and was happy she wouldn’t be in anymore scenes.

Like in Metal Gear V the Phantom Pain?
Michael Caine was taken aback by Ledger's performance as the Joker that he actually forgot his line when Joker breaks into the party at the penthouse

Heyo, it's Sir MoFo Dans the Fourth back to lay down some more trivia:
-Joker's mask in the beginning is a reference to the mask that Cesar Romero's mask in an episode of the 1966 Batman show.
I gotta say, the Rachel character is kind of awful and I'm glad I'm not the only person that feels that way lol
Whew. Wow. This movie started as a masterpiece and just gets better and better and better with every viewing. Just hearing the final words got me this time.

23:20 What’s even more fucked up is the fact that Gordon’s family was still compromised even after ALL THAT just to protect them…
25:00 and I also love how Joker tries to influence Batman in this scene in the same way he did Harvey like “…these cops are eventually gonna turn on you…” but Batman’s so godamn stubborn, literally the embodiment of justice, to the point where he’s just done talking and he just gets violent over the issue..And joker just maniacally laughs at him because he sees how crazy Batman truly is “LOOK AT YOU GO!!”
It’s a classic example of Joker V Batman. Nolan nailed it forsure 👌
26:35 OOoooh and I forgot ab this dynamic as well.
