- Mogswamp has gone viral on RUclips in the past week. We will explore how he came to be super successful in a short time, and why it might not be a good idea to copy Mogswamp's idea.
We will look at why he didn't intend to go viral, and why others will struggle to go viral with his strategy.

Great analysis (and awesome editing)! I definitely did not expect the short to blow up as much as it did, but it does make a lot of sense why it did when it comes to the algorithm seeing a huge influx of subs/likes.
I think you're totally right about it being really hard to replicate. My situation/channel is very unique, and I think for most people it could lead to lots of dead subscribers. The reason I'm not super worried is that based on analytics and comments, I think a lot of the people had already seen one or two of my shorts, but had never had a good reason to hit subscribe. I also think the 11 year journey of the channel is really compelling to people and converts at a higher rate than some newer RUclipsrs who might be just as talented, but not around for as long.

I watched some of your videos and was amazed but didn’t subscribe, when I saw the short I subbed so I could see the huge build
The bad thing about that is that you get loads of useless (kind of like bot/spam) subscribers, who most of which won't even watch any of your new videos.

Agreed, but also, if even 1% of these new subscribers become loyal viewers, that is still a net positive for Mogswamp.
Many of the subscribes were probably people who watched his shorts but never considered subscribing to him.

it's always a crazy feeling to watch a RUclipsr blow up, especially when you've seen them in the earliest stages of their journey!
@@FizzyBanger Yeah, I was subscribed since 300K, and I was blown away by how many subscribers he was getting. I was most happy about the fact that he didn't change his style of content, and it didn't get worse. A lot of content creators lose personality when they get more popular, which causes me to unsubscribe.
Been watching both Mogswamp and you for 2 years now and I'm incredibly happy that he gets the attention he deserved for a long time.

He has a special place on the platform as an OG Minecraft creator. It's exciting to see him blow up and get some new recognition for his hard work.

Yup I've been watching for around 5 years
I don't think I've ever seen a short being made exclusively to promote this sort of thing, but for over a year now some youtubers have been putting this kind of challenge on their videos. Spokeishere, for example, in the middle of the videos promises to explode tnt, kill creatures and other stuff depending on the video in the same amount as his recent subscription growth. Never seen them following any of these through, but it's something that has been in the RUclips game for a while at this point
Oh cool, I knew there would be more Minecraft-related examples on this type of challenge. I'll look into it more. Also, it's a shame if they didn't follow through on some of their promises. I hope anyone who copies Mogswamp's idea know that follow-through is important
@@FizzyBanger Parrot was who gave me the idea. He did a similar challenge in his "Why I Removed the World" video. If you go to his socialblade, you can clearly see the jump where he did the challenge.

Personally, I think this is horrible for a channel. People from shorts that you "bait" into subbing dont necessarily enjoy your content and will forget about you within minutes. I hope that this won't negatively affect his channel
Hmmm there’s definitely a dilemma here. If we are talking long term there’s a very good chance that will happen, but still it’s eyes on your channel that wouldn’t have normally. If he played it correctly he could get a lot out of it. I guess we will see 😮
I can see that. This incentive would likely also encourage alt accounts to subscribe, because people want to add more to the challenge.
It's still fun to hit the milestones, and I hope Mogswamp does pull a few new viewers from the influx of subscribers. But yeah, subscriber counts are just a vanity metric now.

Fizzy Banger once again back witb a perfectly detailed video with perfect montage in it. Mogswamp did such a mistake with that short video that he uploaded but he deserves such a popularity because he is doing something different in the community and as you said i dont think anyone gonna fet that high if they actually copy him. At the end of the day i hope he likes what he is doing and he doesn't force himself to make content because this is gonna cause mental health problems.

I have talked about it with an other youtuber with 650k subscribers and a friend of Mogswamp. The thing is that these viewers won't go and watch your long form video's because the only reason to follow is to get the person to mine more
yeah, this sort of success definitely has a downside regarding the subscribers gained. I should honestly have mentioned it in this video as why this virality is not desired, rather than why its not something that can be copied.

You'll have to use the 'ol yoink and twist method to recreate this, and it'll have to be one hell of a twist
Another example of this Mogswamp effect happened to Miles who did the same thing except its a lag machine.
I hope he manages to do it without dying.
as someone who blew up in 2021 for doing a similar method, i regret it dearly now - maybe the short subscribers will be more forgiving, but after i did it over on tiktok within a few WEEKS all the new followers were inactive
sheesh, that's not good. hopefully, even a small number of these shorts subs become returning viewers - then i could see the benefit in doing this strategy.
every creator ends up with inactives over time, but having a lot of them all at once is a recipe for demotivation and imposter syndrome.

A youtube speedrunner I watch, Sam Dao, mined 1 million blocks of dirt in survival. It took him a week of streaming (not non-stop thank goodness), so this should take mogswamp several months.

Lucky for me I've been a Mogswamp subscriber since before 100k, so now I get to make fun of all the newbies.
As of the time writing this, it looks like he's at 12.1 million blocks. When you consider that a superflat world has 3 layers of dirt that's the same size as a map that's been zoomed out as far as it can go or 16 default maps.
he actually needs to mine 16 million now which was said in his 1 million livestream also he said he will end the challenge when he catches up meaning it could literally take a year or more to finish the challenge

I've been watching Mogswamp for a while now, and honestly it's awesome to see him finally getting the hype he deserves. His content is fantastic, and he seems like a genuinely good person. Even though this may cause him quite a bit of suffering (lol), I'm glad he's getting more viewers, as he deserves.
It will be a sad sad day to see mogswamp lose subscribers after getting it done.

the main problem with stuff like this is that a lot of the new people arent subscribing for the content, and instead subscribing for the pain of mining millions of dirt, so once all of this is over, a lot of those new subscribers are gonna unsub, and yes this will introduce a lot of new people to the channel who are subscribing not only for the dirt, but also for the content, but overall this isnt a permanent solution to getting more subs and it wont last, so i do not recommend it
also this is an alt account but as a small youtuber whenever i upload, theres always a couple people that see my new video and remember i exist, then unsub. so it is very much a thing

That's understandable. I don't mean to make a harsh diss on anyone copying Mogswamp's short, just highlighting that novelty is an important part of the viral success. If it works and its creatively best for your channel, then by all means try it out :-)

i think it's sad that most of those subscribers will unsubscribe him once he makes the mining video/lives.
People will always do mindless and silly challenges just to gain fame. Whether it's copying someone, doing stupid challenges involving playing for an extremely long time or doing very difficult challenges or stealing other user's content to edit and re-upload on their own channel. Never heard of him, but rip to him btw since most of his "subscribers" are mostly bots and spammers just to watch his misery of collecting these blocks then they'll "unsubscribe" afterwards. This is one of the reasons why I'll never get into being a RUclipsr.

I wouldn't blame him if he gave up on the challenge, or set a cut-off date so that the number of dirt blocks would stop growing into impossible numbers.
Either way, he played the algorithm game well, and new people get to see his content :)

The problem with going viral in this way is a lot of people subscribe, but don't actually care about your content, and so they are just meaningless numbers
