    In my opinion, the thing that makes Ish’s videos better than the others is the climax. Instead of forcing a war at the end that all players knew would happen, Ish allowed the players to do what they want, resulting in a much more organic climax and then a more emotional ending.

    • @peterlewis2178
      @peterlewis2178 Год назад +408

      To be fair, he did nudge the war in the most recent video. He definitely wasn't hands-off for that. I mean, the war was gonna happen regardless, but he sort of decided when and where it would happen, and semi-forced some groups to join it instead of doing their own separate wars, because he wanted there to be a climactic battle.

    • @peterlewis2178
      @peterlewis2178 Год назад +201

      @@UglyBoyForeverLonelyAgain That's not true at all. Yes, the last battle was nudged and felt a little scripted for some people, but other than that, the actual event was entirely player-led and extremely organic, apart from player pre-planning.
      Now, there were a number of things he changed for the video, but that's just a matter of adaptation. It's like adapting a novel into a movie. You're gonna cut out, add, and change some things to make it work in the new medium. And that's what he did. But the actual event was by and large unscripted, and players had tons of freedom.
      This is speaking as someone who was in the event, survived to the end, and decided for story reasons to not participate in the final war.

    @uberlord983 Год назад +3029

    One of the greatest parts about Ish's videos are how the villains feel... natural.
    Case in point, with the video you used as Ish's example, Elanuelo felt like a genuine character first, a villain second.
    He had his own ideals as to how his kingdom should be handled, ideals viewers can somewhat resonate with. But its through equally genuine turns of events that you see Elanuelo's character begin to turn for the worse, & you see him begin to do increasingly unhinged things in order to protect his ideals, without him stopping to realize what he's doing for them.
    In contrast, most "villains" in other people's civilizations videos stem from some form of 'Bwaah, I lost the election phase, so rather than respect that people don't like my leadership style, I'm gonna utterly derail our team's chances of winning for my own benefit." A lot of them boil down to "[Candidate Who Didn't Win X], teamed up with {Random Player Y], waltzed up to [Team Leader Z], assassinated them in broad daylight, & somehow the people just... accepted them as the new leader of their group." No suspicion, no repercussion, nothing. That feels way more scripted, especially when its been done to death by this point.

    I think one of the most incredible things Ish manages to do, which he first did in his Prison video and hasn't really done to the same extent since, is he uses god damn leitmotifs by use of the stems Epidemic Sounds provides you with use of specific sounds. In certain places during the prison video, certain melodies or instrumentals from specific songs are used to signal certain ideas or characters, such as the warden, and when the climax of those stories arise, he uses the full song which he took that stem from, which is absolutely insane. I don't think I've ever seen a youtuber soundtrack quite like that.

      He also will modify the music slightly to fit the moment or cut the video to fit the music. In his breakdown of the 1000 player civilization video, he talked about one particular moment where he added a sound to the music to make it more impactful/ominous. And in the example shown in this video of the sand trap, you can see how the player death sounds all happened on beat.

    • @Fem_V
      @Fem_V Год назад +1

      As is mentioned in the video.
      Until the end, the song is perfect.
      One thing to note other than how it became an anthem, the way the battle of aculon was shot without narrative, just the music, players' occasional voices, and the scenes REALLY brought the strength of the scene amplified by the song's tune.
      Ish is simply very very good at production, albeit he nudged a few things in that event, it's still a very good product, music can amplify emotions, and ish knows how to use that.

  • @toodrew8620
    @toodrew8620 Год назад +768

    I think another key thing that not many people talk about is how ish balances player enjoyment during the event and quality of the outcome. Almost every other civ event owner forces players to go down the standard path like you said and ish doesnt. Sometimes its messy but ish does a good job picking and choosing what to include to make a good story as well as adding sometimes false details to make a messy plot more complete.

  • @ashtonimus6124
    @ashtonimus6124 Год назад +460

    People hate this part of it but I actually love how symbolic it is.
    Ish interferes with the plot sometimes(most notably the desert arc) to make a better plot. Thing is, the players can make their own videos of their experiences.
    This is like with real life, where history is told by the Victors, where they make themselves seem like the good guys and in the complete right. Whereas someone on the losing side will be biased too, but they know what went on from their POV.
    I just find that to be beautiful and bittersweet.

    Ish is basically just a passive observer watching the world unfold. The fact he doesn't do anything special is what makes it so great, because it feels _real._ When I watch the videos, I see a lot of similarities with how things unfold in the real world. It's unpredictable and *_anything_* could happen next, to the point that it feels like I'm watching real history. I think another very important thing to note that makes ish simply better, is his way ability to structure his stories. If you watched some of his analysis streams you would know that some events were put out of order, and some lines/scenes were rerecorded or slightly altered. These slight changes make his videos way more interesting to watch, as it changes the feeling of a bunch of people play a game together to a well thought out movie. I’ve since watched other Minecraft civilization challenges from a number of other content creators, and although they’re great in their own right, they do have a clear and discernible formula that takes away from the storytelling that Ish always nails in his own challenges (for the reasons you stated in the vid). Seriously, the way the man let’s players organically build their own stories and then weaves those stories into an epic, cinematic masterpiece with emotional beats and epic climaxes is on another level. Every challenge is well worth the wait

    The way you compared Silver's and Ish's storytelling, how Ish rises the tension in a more of a "show, don't tell" way is something I definitely feel like a lot of RUclips is missing nowadays... It's like to understand a story, people think we need to be spoon fed, but it isn't really the case, as apparent by how effective that one scene from Ish (which I've never even seen before) and how it literally had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen.

    (For example, the jungle meeting with the trap floor. The frequent switching of perspectives makes the viewers feel stressed as dialogue escalates, while he still manages to get some a lot of fantastic angles of the sand trap, all of which happened in a few seconds of real-world time!)

    I agree with the story stuff, ish's video's are set up great, Magic Gum had a great idea, but Ish's storytelling put him above and beyond him. For the other youtubers however, i don't think just better storytelling would save their videos, nearly every single non ish and magic gum civilisation video i've watched seems pretty much just like a few groups duking it out until the end, and the only way to make it slightly more different and interesting is to change the scenario's environment so they have another video.
    They completely lack any correlation to the word civilisation pretty much, Ish and Magic Gums videos have that, my only complaint regarding their videos is how they spread the players out so that they continue to be in smaller groups, rather then forcing them into smaller areas with less resources, so having a civilisation that works effectively becomes neccesary, albeit trying not to fall into the trap of directly telling the players what to do.
    Good video 👍

      I don’t know, I think MagicGum’s willingness to simply let events unfold as they will and presenting them as they are makes for more interesting content. Ish tends to reframe and “modify plot points” (his words) to tell a specific narrative, as was brought to light following his 1000 Player Civ, and turns actual server events into very Hollywoodized Historical Fiction complete with “Good Guys” and “Bad Guys” and fabricated sequences of events.
      MagicGum, at least from what I know, presents what actually happened in a manner that’s easy to follow, without reframing events or placing anyone on a moral or ethical scale. We see what players actually did and how they shaped the world without biased revisionism and typecasting. It makes for a far more interesting MineCraft civilization experiment when the videographer presents the sociological narrative created by the players rather than fudging the lens to create a heavily dramatized version.
      I love Ish’s videos, but at the end of it what I’m seeing is a fairly fictionalized narrative, rather than an honest rendition of server history. I think MagicGum’s videos are better for that.

    Minecraft Civ videos are a tightrope most content creators can't walk. From setting up the internal infrastructure to run an event that can handle ~1000 players while properly moderating and keeping track/recording the in-game roleplay/combat for a prolonged amount of time is nuts. While the videos will always do well, it's the sort of niche that has to be driven by passion rather than a monetary goal. Because the second a creator crosses the line is the same second player engagement becomes second to money.
    I genuinely believe the Civ niche could utilize Objectives in a narrative focused way or benefit from a shorter time frame if done right. But as it stands, a lot of the other civ creators are more focused on pumping out glorified battle royales. One creator in particular (I forget whom) fully paywalled the chance of getting into his Civ experiments and it was such a put off for me.
    Ish and a few others have nailed a really cool formula of videos that I'd love to see expanded on in the future, but it's a shame that it's such a game of chance when watching new civ videos on if they'll be enjoyable or not.

    I think an important argument for ish is also the wording of his narration and the voice over in general.
    Especially in comparison to SpeedSilver, one can notice the more dynamic and intersting tone of voice that ish uses, whereas SpeedSilver speaks so monotonous, that the suspension is additionally dampened.
    And then also the wording. I have noticed, that in many civ videos, when a group for example comes up with a plan and you just listened in to their conversation, many narrators repeat the same exact information that was clear from the convo you just heard. Ish doesn't do that. Maybe from time to time there is a short summary, but usually it is only later on, as a reminder what that group was talking about before we switched to another group.
    And overall the wording is precise and adding suspension, as shown in this vid here.

This is a side effect of having no clear objective, the players decide there world. They arent in preset teams, they can divide themselves, kinda like how nations or cultures do. Also i for one hate the gimmick minecraft civ, to me its like 100 days where when u add gimmicks the video looses some of its original appeal. Ish also lied about Darivit's (I think that's how you spell it?) death, as he made it seem as though he died shortly after the Sultan did. In reality, his death came at the hands of a player during the Battle of Aculon, shortly after Elaneulo died.

      Anyways, it would've been really interesting to see how the Emerate would handle the conflict, post-Battle of Aculon, since The Allies would've been rather weakened. The little sub-plot of dismantling Theria, probably would've played a special role in dwindling a portion of The Allies, giving Aculon a chance to hold out a bit longer. It would've made any further conflicts in the desert way more interesting, as anyone dealing with the Emerate would've been met with cunning and stealth (since somehow EJK had a nack for sneaking into discords during the event.)
      Also, definitely mods like Create cause, giving credit where credit is due, Ish did show off how industrious the Plains and even the Jungle was; both factions as well as Snow likely benefitting a ton off of mods that compliment their creativity! Silver & Swords events only range around One day run events or 3 / 4 day run events, meaning of course storyline build up will be pushed faster due to timing.
    - When it comes to player mass in civ events, me being someone who has played in both ish events, sword events & Silver events, I can say these single day events / 4 day events run alot smoother for average players over the 2 week long event that feel 'dragged out' over the long period of running time for the players in-game. Though this may result in a stronger more story driven video, It loses players to more than natural rates just to boredom / repetition.
    - Overall saying ish's video are more 'creative / authentic' is a bit of a stretch due to the editing time being over 8 months between each video compared to silver & swords being monthly in general.
    - i wish within the research for this video u reached out to players who have actually taken part in all of these different events just for better context, i feel u are missing alot of substance due to the mis-information about certain run times / actually event play-through.
    None the less thank you for the video, it is overall a good video just missing key contexts to why ish's event have more heavily endorsed storylines, if these context areas were filled then this video would be a lot more reliable. 💙

    Ish feels like a cameraman recording a documentary of sorts. He even interviews people in the story like he is talking to a witness or someone divulging their motivations about an event.
    While sometimes he puts in some sort of event for a nudge towards conflict, the story is almost always the people's doing. He is but a Watcher recording what is happening in the world, sharing their stories.

    I really like that ish tells the story from more of a unbias, omnipresent, point of veiw. When the youtuber themselves is in the civilazation it ruins the irony because you already know they are going to live through the entire video, they will know the effects of the mod, and the personal feelings of players won't be accurately. Word from the other players alone. An example is in a video MARCUSK made when Perspective's PD attacked Diamond's guards it showed us that some were scared when one said "I dont wanna die". I liked that a lot. It brought out more emotion in me than just saying "Perspective's PD killed Diamond and the remaining guards were killed off or put in jail".

    but if you watch all the videos from the people playing, ish removed there stories, like he removed a major story in the desert.
    ish also lied about the players fighting by bringing everyone who died in it came back.
    he also brought players in throughout the video that wasn’t show, Magicgum is just better
