    I live in Japan, but these guys created a literal sensation a few years back. Whether or not if you were interested in Minecraft content, you couldn't avoid bumping into it. The moment you had a relative below the age of 12, you would eventually be blasted with the (rather obnoxious) audio of their videos.
    Me, being a slightly more mature person, never really got hooked to their videos; and started to hear about it less and less as my younger sister lost interest in their content. Never knew that they were doing so well not just inside but also outside of Japan though. Hearing that name in the intro gave me a slight sense of nostalgia. Was wondering how long it would take for you to point out the Japanese background!
    Nonetheless great video, glad I found it.

      @FizzyBanger  Год назад +15

      That's really interesting. It seemed to be very popular in Japan, based on the research I did. Hearing it firsthand from someone who lives there helps me understand Maizen better.
      Do you know anything about Maizen before they become a sensation there? It would be interesting to know how they first became popular in Japan.
      Glad you enjoyed the video, by the way! :)

    • @user-tm8bs8se8z
      @user-tm8bs8se8z Год назад +12

      Unfortunately I'm not sure as to how they managed to get popular in Japan, as by the time they came along I was already too old to be a part of their audience.
      Although one thing that I can say is that they have merchandise; which isn't very common for a gaming RUclipsr in Japan. A decent portion of even the largest creators don't sell any merch, so Maizen was quite the oddball, especially when considering that children consist the vast majority of their audience.
      I also remember that they managed to pull in a surprising amount of teens and adults as well, since there was a somewhat large fanbase created on more "mature" websites like Twitter.
      That's pretty much all that I know, sorry that I couldn't be of much help.

      sorry for my broken english
      I recall watching these guys back in 2015-2016 for there smash bros content. They would make fake "kid rages losing at a smash tourney" videos. There were very few smash bros content in youtube jp back then so it was impossible to not see there videos on the recommendation page on yt. They even collabed with Abadango, one of the strongest player in smash 4.
      Also , JJ's name use to be Zenichi. Zenichi was a term used in the jp smash community for top players. ex) "Zenichi Captain Falcon" would mean the best Captain falcon player in Japan. Having this term in the video title and description must've boosted there view counts. They hijacked the search result of "(insert smash bros character name) professional player"
      They shifted to a fully minecraft channel in 2017. I guess smash bros was irrelevant due to the lack of updates while minecraft having new content added each and every day with mods. Also, the biggest MC let's play by the youtuber Hikakin dropped his series which had 100+ episodes making an opportunity to gain new viewership. They started with usual survival let's plays the gradually moved on to one shot videos with mods or twists.
      Idk about them past late 2018 because i grew out this type of content. The only thing I noticed is that whoever is running the English maizen channel is likely not the original Mikey or JJ(Zenichi). English maizen has a different voice and accent. Maybe a staff of UUUM (network) is running the ENG channel.
      Honestly, I enjoyed this content along the minecraft troll channels when I was young. I left there videos on auto play and watched one after another just like any other kid who were addicted to youtube.
      I am glad to see someone make a video about them.

     @Fizzy Banger btw I don’t know if it’s just me, but maizen kind of reminds me of dantdm, popularmmos and Minecraft in 2016. They do a lot of mod review type videos and role playing/ storytelling which was very popular back in the day. It is very rare to see now, so I’m very surprised that that type of content is getting them millions of views.
    In terms of the characters themselves, they remind me of dantdm and the old RUclipsrs. They are very calm and don’t shout into the microphone unlike most RUclipsrs with content towards children. I really like that because it doesn’t scream “children content” as much as others do. I didn’t even notice that the content was towards children until I actually watched several of their videos.
    Also, most people probably don’t know this, but JJ actually has a different name in their Japanese channel. His name is zenichi and he probably changed it so that the English audience would be able to interact more easily.

    My sister's been obsessed with Maizen ever since she found out about them, and considering I've always had to babysit her, I can say I've seen some stuff from them.
    I think this channel is actually ran by a corporation. I remember some of the videos she watched from them were different than the ones usually found on the Maizen channel, in a way that they were voiced by robots rather than real people, and had way different, and also less child-appropriate content. If 2 people indeed ran this channel, why would they have a completely different style of content, while producing the same types of videos? This is just my theory though, and I'm not sure if the videos I described can actually be found on the Maizen channel. If you want to, you can look more into it. I'm not exactly sure how deep this rabbit hole goes, but I also don't wanna find out, considering the things I've seen from this "other side of Maizen".

      @Fizzy Banger I do remember that the English channel had a different voice actor than their newer ones. JJ was more monotone, and Mikey was the same guy but with a higher voice. (Kinda like the Japanese one) If I find it, I'll link it. (I hope this is new)
      Edit: It might be unofficial, just a guy trying to profit of Maizen.

    My little brother actually watches these guys and I usually end up watching along with him. They know their content is for kids and they don't try to hid it but it's pretty harmless compared to all the elsagate videos out there making a resurgence. Also now that you mention they're japanese makes more sense since whenever I see them do stuff that involves text (like dragging items in their inventory) it would always appear in japanese which made me assumed they were using a Japanese mod. Also another thing I discovered that was interesting while watching with my little brother is that there's a lot of fake channels that try to pose as them but with text-to-speech or other stuff like that makes it come off as low quality content with over exaggerated editing (for kids).

      Japanese was the original, after English people found out that their content was good, english started to annoy them a little since Maizen can't speak English.
      Until they made a channel, lots of english people enjoyed it and they become successful on both channel.
      However right now Maizen (english) was more successful since the Japanese channel had lack of posts (wait for 2 weeks then one video, but they used to say they will be uploaded DAILY)

      Yeah, I have been talking with some other people in the comments who've also seen Maizen ads. I never saw them because my personalised ads would never show me kids content anyways. It definitely gives more validity to their super growth if Maizen had a massive ad campaign running.

    But the thing I am suspicious about is their old channel had 2 million subscribers, while their new channel has over 3 million. Their Japanese channel was made in 2015, while their new channel was made much more recently. They gained nearly 4 million subscribers in a year while their Japanese channel gained less than 3 million subs in 7 years (2015-2022). Thats what I am confused about

    • @FizzyBanger

      I'd assume it's because there are more English viewers than Japanese viewers that would watch Maizen content. Plus, I'm not sure how long Maizen's Japanese channel took to make high performing videos.
