You need to prime both sides of the PVC.... It softens the pipe and helps the glue stick better! Any plumber knows that lol and you should have used a coupling instead of just butt glueing them... The PVC " glue " is a solvent, by priming the pipe it softens it and allows the glue to basically weld the pieces of pipe together
Matt NorthernMN i agree with priming both sides for sure but if he used a coupling and glued it correctly, I don’t think he would have been able to pull it apart
@@Brandonpowerstroke I agree.... Would be Interesting to see him do this again only use a coupling on all of the glues, and of course using primer on both sides of the pipe as well as the coupling
Yea you need to use primer on both sides of a pvc cement connection. The pvc cement is not glue per say (it does have some body and does solidify) but it is a chemical bonding that chemically melts the 2 pieces in to one. It’s more of a chemical welding process than a gluing process. If done properly it should be nearly as strong as if you were pulling on a straight piece of pipe
I think you are right. I am not a plumber, but every time I used PVC cement, I applied it to both the male and female parts of the pipe, and I have never had a problem with leaks at the joint.
Ngl, I glued a nickel to the small stone wall in front of my house with e6000 and it hasn't come off for 2 years now. You wouldn't believe how many people try to take the nickel when they walk by
You should draw a line down the length of the pipe before you cut it, that way it can be lined up. if they have been cut on the slightest angle it will apply more force to one side
I’m a 18 year old girl, all I watch on RUclips is makeup tutorials, but about 3 months ago one of these glue videos got recommended to me and I’ve kept up since then. I have no clue why. I enjoy the videos though, so keep up the good work 👍🏼🤣
The PVC glue and Solvent is a totally different adhesive than Superglue. PVC glue is more viscous and meant to be able to be in the elements and stay slightly flexible while holding high pressures. Superglue is rigid and if you put it on the pipe you would eventually get cracks from the constant expansion and contraction of the pipes in hot and cold weather.
I believe the reason flex glue didn’t holed is that is less of a glue and more of a sealant, also I was super impressed to see they flex glory even managed to hold 31 pounds (I expected 15 ish).
How about testing if to much glue makes it week? Is there an sweet spot in the amount of glue you shud use? Same type of glue in different amounts applied to same material.
Wow, this is a great video and exactly what I was looking for! Edit: The reason I found this video was because I just had to glue a few pieces of PVC (elbows and couplings to a few pieces of pipe) and I didn't have any PVC cement. Well, I had some, but it was old so I didn't want to use it. So I decided to use super glue. It seemed very solid, but I was kind of doubting because I've never done that before. The PVC I glued was not for water pipe application, just using it as a cable run. So, seeing the super glue do so well was awesome!
The superglue will fail if you are suing the pvc pipes in a normal type of pvc pipe use. PVC glue is designed to move and flex with the PVC. Superglue will crack and come lose over time.
Honestly, I think it would be a good idea to do two of each type of glue or whatever substance in the future. I know it would take longer but it would really confirm the results and erase any chance that there was a mistake or some random event stopping it from functioning well. You honestly don't even need to show that video of the 2nd attempt. You could just mention something " And the second attempt showed similar results" or "take a look at my second attempt as it's results were fairly different". Up to you. If this was a science project i'm pretty sure you'd need multiple of each. Love the channel regardless!
I like the experiment, but could you do it with a coupling instead of butting the pipe up. It would just create a more realistic test. If you could use different pvc glues as well that would be cool, Cristy’s red hot and blue, there are differnt oatey and weld bend and a lot of others. But again, really awesome test!
What Matt said, only, what happens with pvc glue is that it melts the pvc and it has the same effect as welding metal. The pvc from both surfaces melts and combines, and becomes integrated, as if there never was a gap. BTW, if there was any lettering on the ends it would have to be shaved off in order to work with any other kind of glue. But anyway, pvc doesn't stick to lots of things, so roughing up the surfaces micht have an effect.
Indeed, you need to put primer on both surfaces that get glued. Also, you could have used even wood with the same success, since you didn't couple the pipes...
An interesting idea could be see if a super glue is stronger than actual wood glue on the blocks, just to test if you should use regular super glue or a special type of super wood glue
Wow, the editing on your videos is getting really good, great job! My suggestion for your next vid would be to do the same glue test, but with PVC coupling, and see how the results would differ
based on past experiments....the super glue is naturally the thinnest.. it represents the the closest to being clamped....one reason a clamped object holds better cause there is less surface area and space for the compound to cause failures and restricts expand-ages
I dont know why, but I super enjoy your videos. I would like to see you test how much super glues can hold. One being Krazy Glue. Krazy Fast, Krazy Strong, Krazy Glue!
The most remarkable thing about Oatey PVC cement is how fast it dries out and becomes useless. I've thrown out a zillion mostly full cans of that stuff! Is there any way to thin/rejuvenate it?
I'd love it if you'd test if clamping things made a bigger difference on certain types of materials, like you could try it with wood and pvc and maybe metal or something, because it makes sense to me that it would make a difference with wood, but I don't know why itd make a difference with other materials, I'd like to see you try it out!!
Maybe do this one again but with a coupler between the pipes, as you would actually do when installing PVC pipe. Though both tests are good, I think this test would be interesting.
what if you redid the test but used the glue to also make a seal around the outside of it about the width of a piece of scotch tape? you could use a popsicle stick to spread the glue on the outside, that way the glue is adhering to itself
The action of the plates moving between the chain links introduced shock into the loading, therefore your results are highly suspect. Model cement might have been a contender.
Curious to know why would you test tensile strength on PVC? That’s not what’s being used for - pressure and sealing properties of primer and cement are what’s recommended for. Use it on wood and compare to Elmer’s then you’ll see the difference to tensile stresses.

Only doing one side in primer really bothered me
This one really irked me really bad lol.
I'm no plumber and from everything I've watched on DIY they always have done both sides so I thought the same thing
Matt NorthernMN i agree with priming both sides for sure but if he used a coupling and glued it correctly, I don’t think he would have been able to pull it apart

Just about to say the same... prime and glue both side
Came here to say the same thing
#Metoo
Me 4
Same lol happy I seen this comment hahaha
Man, I thought Elmer’s glue had this one on the bag.
I did too man I am usually wrong anyway
Same I thought it could finally pull through this time!
Elmer’s excels at shear adhesion of memories and friendship
you're fucking profile pic matches too well with this comment
MAAAANNN I tought elmurs Glu had dis one in da baag!
Tyler I have a unique request, can we see your collection of glue?
Yeah, I wanna see his personal glue if you know what I mean
Um what? *do* you mean? I’m low key scared rn
With the power of Phil Swift, anything is possible with Flex Glue
Held 3 lbs lol
Yep lol😂
That’s three infinities more than nothing
Please do the same test but holding together with couplings
I was just coming here to say the same thing. These pipes aren't joined the way he is gluing them.
I love how he tests Elmer’s glue. That shit doesn’t even hold the googly eyes on my students projects
3:42 The reason it only held 1 pound is because you used the knock-off brand, Elemr's Glue
Wait I don’t get this joke how is normal Elmer’s glue a knock off Elmer’s glue
@@zebra4049 the joke is a typo in the editing, bottom left of the frame of the timestamp
Whats the best metal glue???
pls make a best metal glue vid
Welding
I’ve heard hot metal works as a good glue

Jb weld depending on your application
I'm thinking the PVC glue you have to do both sides...The primer has something to do with activation I believe...May be wrong but it's just a thought

Avery Alexander Oh so now there are gendered pipes? As a female I am incredibly offended! How dare they assume!

Can you do the same with metal, need to glue a few Masamunes together for a Quinoa cosplay
I really like TylerTube, right to the point. No random blabber, just straight to the experiment.
The guy is an idiot.

Cheers form Italy man! Love your videos!
This is by far my favorite channel on GlueTube!
Tyler your mistake you didnt put purple cement liquid on other side just on one side.
Correct me if in wrong but don't you need to use the pvc primer on both sides for the pvc cement to work to its full potential
The primer is to help adhesion so yes you do it on both sides
Ur posta prime and glue both sides and apply downward pressure
You should develop your own glue.
Your videos make me happy man👌🏻
I know you read my comments. If you could, i have always wanted to see a duct tape vs flex tape video. Keep up the good work and original content!
I believe he already has!

great video tyler!!
Your beard is sexy but i didnt say that
Lol funny

@Anthony The Invincible Iron Man Stark maybe

You should test each one 3 times, help rule out any anomaly. 2nd or 3rd try of Elmer's glue could have potentially held more.
Love all the videos this far
I enjoyed watching this video thanks 🙏
Never thought id be addicted to glue videos, yet here i am.

Great channel. Do some tests of crazy glues. Best of luck!
Hey Tyler, your channel is awesome. Can you see which brand is the best double sided tape for metal and wood? And if clamping matters?
Thank you for the note about clamp, also you should have primed both sides of pvc with the purple primer
These videos are silly, but useful. They are also entertaining.
They are silly and not useful at all.

thanks. need to glue some plastic acrylic together so this will come in handy
for pvc cement and primer you need to prime both parts and you need to go around at least 5 times with the primer
The pvc cement might have done better if you primered both surfaces instead of just the bottom.
That's not how pvc is glued together tho
Nice test. I'd like to see you do this test with some more materials like DAP Clear.
