Till Lindemann does write the lyrics..All 6 of them in one way or another decide on the lyrics and what makes it or doesn't make it...all 6 have to agree...so if Till writes lyrics to a song but 2 of them dont like it then Till will rewrite it until they do.
"their approach to songwriting, which consists of Lindemann writing and singing the lyrics over instrumental pieces the rest of the band have completed beforehand."
"During the recording of the songs for the Mutter Album...For one song, not known which, Till wrote 24 different lyrics before finally, everyone in the band agreed and it finally made it on the album"
So that means that they all have a say and they all contribute in the way a song finally comes out.
For ex. in the song "Spieluhr" Till had originally written in the lyrics that the child was going to die but the rest of the band members finally convinced to change the lyrics so that the child survives in the end.

    Just some remarks:
The several times mentioned "Schwarze Mann" ("black man") is known as a child fright figure in the German-speaking area ("Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann" = Who does fear the black man). Depending on the region and time, it was understood to mean different beings: a dark shadowy figure or a man dressed in black. As a metaphor, the "bogeyman" reached a "peak" as personalization of evil, savagery, and the unknown in the course of colonization, and in the process also acquired a racist connotation. In this context, I find the consumption of those sweets (German so-called "negro kisses") at the end during the end credits very interesting, which work through this "black man" symbolism.
Also the colors usage is interesting (Black/White/Red representing the Nazi-color Spectrum). I also found it interesting at the end of the credits that when the TV was destroyed, the color came back into the picture.
Further, I noticed that the pie-like plots seen from above correspond to the "political symbol" at the lectern where the singer, wearing a straitjacket, gives his speech. After these borders & plots collapse during the wild shoot-out, the politician, unleashed by the straitjacket to spread his propaganda/fear.
Cheering on the cheerleaders is the equivalent of pitching an idea/product and the dancers are slammed with money to sell the bricks and guns to the landowners.
This Clip has many layers and can be interpreted in many directions. I see there is a statement on xenophobia and populism/media

My favourite song from the album. Why? Because it perfectly reflects my new fucking reality. Oh yeah, greeting from Russia - the country where fear of Boogeymen rules now.
People's gone crazy echoing TV propaganda about strangers wanting to kill us. Fear which has been grown up by government, by decades of propaganda actually. And undereducated people really believe what crazy Father says.
Nothing's left here but hate, cruelty and fear. Fear of enemies and fear for lives of those who's against the war... I can't describe it. Rammstein did. Thanks them. Thank you for your reactions. And peace for all of us.

I am dismayed by the path Russia is taking. I am East German. Born in 1969. We studied Russian at school. Unfortunately I can only say a few words. Even as a child I loved Russian fairytale films and cartoons, such as "Rabbit and Wolf" (Ну, погоди!) or "The Humpbacked Horse" (Конёк-Горбунок). I worked with Russians here in Germany. Russians also work in my current company. I met Russian soldiers as a child. They were very kind to us. Gave us badges. I find it very sad what is happening right now. I am not an enemy of the Russian people. I only wish for peace between the peoples of the world. But at the moment there is a lot of hate being stirred up. I hope it will be over soon. Many people die every day because of the will of individuals who have stones in their chests.

The meaning of this song is really deep and I actually love how direct they are with these lyrics. The "black man" is sort of a word play because it is both a german synonym for "boogie man" but in the context of this song it can also be understood literally. Germany and Europe in general have seen large amounts of refugees in recent years which sadly led to a lot of racism in the media and in politics. Many politicians used fear of foreigners to profit in elections and I really like how they portrayed that in this video.
The whole message and video were really strong but I also LOVE the music, especially that last bridge with Till's ragin voice. I am so happy that Rammstein just never get old and that their music keeps evolving without dropping their main sound

The german word for boogie man literally translating to black man can be taken literally beyond the context of this song. It's not a coincidence, this usage of the term is absolutely rooted in racism. Even if many people (children) probably use it without actively thinking about it. Which is what I think Rammstein wants to draw attention to in this song by using the term in this way.

    • @federicocoda7526

i think this song has a more direct reading. they are portraying the word state as today with a more detailed look at europe. the racism and rise of the extremes right parties; the closure of the borders; the resume of the arms race... what really strikes me is how everything is allowed through the cheerleaders, a notorious usa symbol, and how they fit perfectly in the video like they are there but cannot really notice them or pay attention to them. you just don't think about it until you start writing; after all why cheerleaders would be present to a politc speech, sell bricks and weapons ? i think the main characters of this video are the cheerleaders, after all everything that happens woudn't happen without their actions.

When they were shooting at the screens, they were actually watching their neighbors. You can see them installing surveillance cameras on top of the walls, facing each other (interestingly, the cameras are also connected with red wire). So i think they were scared of their neighbors because on the screen they could see them with guns. Also, the cheerleaders in the background cheering them on while shooting in my opinion supports the theory that the government wanted this to happen. The people are supposed to be scared of each other, as a measure of control.

You're absolutely right about the "bogey man" equivalent, however, it's kind of a double meaning in general. Historically, it was a saying while playing hide and seek. The seeker would say: "Who is afraid of the black man!" The hiders would answer: "No one!" Then the seeker would ask: "And if he comes for you?" And then the hiders would answer: "Then we are running away!" and this was the start of playing hide and seek for children.
Historically speaking, the "black man" might really have referred to the grim reaper, however, after the short colonial era of the German Reich and especially nowadays there is a different connotation. That's why you would normally not hear this expression anymore, at least very seldom.
One of the things that might slip into the double meaning is the fact that the band members eat Dickmann's at the end of the video. In Germany, Dickmann's has always been called "Negerküsse", which translates to the N-word and then "kisses". Up until the late 2000s, there wasn't really any other name for it. So a couple of years ago, Dickmann's ceased calling them in this racist way and they found different expressions for their product. However, conservatists and people from the far-right are still nuts about this and try to call them with this old rather racist name whenever possible in order to trigger those "leftist snowflakes".
For a German, it's pretty apparent to me, especially with the refugees in the video, that most of it targets certain right wing movements within Germany. The right wing movement had a lot of success in the years between 2015 and 2018 due to the larger number of Syrian refugees coming to Germany. A far-right party named AfD ("Alternative für Deutschland"), formerly a 4%-party, got into the Bundestag in 2017 with 12.6%, mainly because of their anti-refugee policy which was presented with all types of fear-induced scenarios ("refugees are rapists", "refugees are terrorists", etc.).
Apart from the fact that art is always subject to personal interpretation and that there is no "right" or "wrong" interpretation, as a German there are some motives in here that are easily recognizable from our own zeitgeist.

Years later I understood that it was a f****ing racist term about skin colour. I also assume that the lyrics are about refugees and the "Angst" that right wing ass***** create around them to gain power.

The smiling cheerleaders coming along with both wall bricks and aussult guns is the #1 key here ! I knew you would love this one!!! So happy that you understood and appreciated all of the symbolism in this video. The breakdown in this song is sick. Two areas I interpreted differently (and that’s the beauty of Rammstein; there are so many ways you can interpret their music): 1- in the breakdown where they start shooting the tv’s; if you notice, you’ll see that each of their cameras is pointed toward their neighbor, and you’ll catch on Paul’s tv that he sees Richard with his gun. My interpretation there is each of them is so fearful that they turn on each other, so them shooting the tv’s is them attacking each other, essentially. 2- at the end where Till destroys the tv and the color comes back; I interpreted that to be them deciding to stop listening to the propaganda being fed to them (whether it be by the media, government, whatever). So, each time he hits the tv a little bit of color comes back, like the fog is being lifted and they are able to see clearly again and not be brainwashed with whatever was being fed to them. Very poignant video. Absolute masterpiece. Looking forward to your other reactions (please do Lügen!!!). 😁 You da bomb, keep doing your thing.

Yes their style may have changed, but they have been around for a very long time and to remain relevant change is required. With the skill they possess, we really are experiencing a golden era and there is not enough publicity for this impressive band. Nothing changes as new listeners always are stunned by the sheer power and theatrics regardless of album.
It would appear that they may not come to Australia which is very sad and we are incredibly envious of the other countries. We know everyone who gets to see them are in for an experience of a lifetime.

You're certainly right when it comes to the origin of the word "schwarzer Mann" (German Boogeyman), but as this meaning was lost, many associate it with the literal color of the skin nowadays. That's the reason why the children's game of the same name (it’s basically playing catch) is not played anymore at schools (or at least not called this way). As this is common knowledge in Germany, Till used "schwarzer Mann" in his lyrics literally as part of his criticism towards narrow-minded people who are afraid of foreigners (or at least people who don't look caucasian). The video underlines the meaning of the lyrics. It becomes even clearer when you take into consideration what the band is actually eating in the video. At the end it's a sweet called "chocolate kiss" in Germany but it used to be called "n***o kiss". There was a whole debate about it if it's alright to say it or not while it was obviously always racist. I also think that they have so-called "Zigeuner (gipsy)-Schnitzel" on their plates. Also a word that isn't used anymore but it was the same debate as with the sweets at the end.
All in all, the word "schwarzer Mann" was used deliberately by Till because it fits the narrative of the song.

I love this entire album and I have been a fan since Herzeleid. What I got from this video and song is both the Bogeyman reference as a metaphor in this for Otherism, but also literally afraid of The Black Man, as well as leaning heavily into disdain for the working class (the chimney sweep reference to the Schwarzen Mann mentioned in another comment ). The cheerleaders seem to be the support for government and social propaganda, which as an American, rings very heavily here. Fear of the neighbor, the pushing of violence and isolationism, how they shoot their TV's and then it brings them to a hell-like space. I had to laugh when Till was propped up in front of a podium in a straight jacket by said cheerleaders, again as an American, and plugged into the propaganda machine. The refugee mother and child surrounded by razor wire watching Rammstein watching them and eating a sweet which had a very questionable name into the 00's in some areas. How, as Till destroys the method of delivery (the TV), the color progressively goes from b&w to technicolor to full color spectrum ..
Every time I watch this, I see something new. Rammstein never fails to render me speechless.

I think the scene at the end where Till is smashing the TV and the scene stops being monochrome means that in the media everything is pictured as either black or white, right or wrong, good or bad, left or right. You are either for or against something while in reality there are so many different nuances to everything.

A song about media propaganda through the internet and its effect This is another song into which everyone can interpret what they want. Some see it as a reference to the US (cheerleaders, typical US suburban middle class, in golf club dress, mowing the lawn, barbeque and quick unlimited access to guns.
    Some on internet conspiracy theorists.
Some on Nazis, because of the colour scheme.
Others to Orwell's 1984 because of the aesthetics of the video.
Probably also a good metaphor for the conspiracy theme, everyone sees what they want to see.
There are also allusions to racism, refugees from Africa and the Middle East, illegal immigration from South America, Trump, storming the Capitol, George Floyd, politically correct language and the ambiguous German term der Schwarze Mann (the black man) from the children's game.
This term was originally coined from the Black Death
the plague in Europe in the Middle Ages which one should not get too close to as a warning for one's life.
To put it briefly with a famous Rammstein Song in this video:
We're all living in America....so it's just the normal madness.

Rammstein is only getting better, imo. Till's song writing as of the past album and this newest one has gone leaps and bounds over anything he's written previously. And the band's sound has become more intellectual and refined.

I really appreciate that you took the time to review the lyrics before commenting. "Black Man" is easily misunderstood without knowing the meaning in german. It is what they are playing with. Easy to be misunderstood in the direct translation. Boogeyman is the direct translation. But coold be easily misunderstood as an race motivated meaning. I really look forward for your future reaction videos.

    Hallo Aileen,
thanks for your Rammstein reactions. I am German and I think this song is about the fear of Europeans of refugees from Africa. This fear is driven by the media, news etc. Very interesting is the end scene. The members are eating sweets that had a racist meaning. in former times these things were called "Mohrenkopf" or "Negerkuss". So they are eating a black mans head while seeing people from Africa sitting in a camp, maybe after they have crossed the sea to come to Europe.
Schwarzer Mann has a double meaning here (of course... it's Rammstein).

Black man or bogey man? As a german, i think the intention is BOTH. Of course the bogeyman, but also picking up the fear of the Europeans from all that african refugees that may come to disturb us here in our fine, self-pleasing life with more than enough to eat, to drink, to amuse....so putting up more and more barricades, armor, even at last killing - maybe each other because of FEAR. Fear leads to violence....

Loving your channel right now...this is one of my favourites on the album (AOTY for me so far)...everytime I watch this video I notice new things...the clip you describe is spot on and I also noticed the security camera's be put on in place also have red wires attached... highlighting the government is watching (boogyman) ☺️ keep up the great work...one of the best reaction channels I've come across... ☺️👍

I think the thing most frightening about this video, is that it does not exclusively apply to germany. The right wing has got us frightened all over the world, and they're seizing power.
