NATO flypast as UK takes over air policing mission in Romania

- The UK has taken command of NATO’s air policing mission in Romania.
Four Royal Air Force Typhoons, their pilots and ground crew will operate the enhanced mission for the fourth time since it began operating in 2014.
It comes at a time of massive tension across NATO’s eastern flank with Russia's invasion of Romania's neighbour, Ukraine.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallance was in attendence and confirmed to Forces News that the UK will be sending protected armoured vehicles, including Mastiff, to Ukraine.

The only issue they had was with various nato nations not paying their fair share of their own defense.
The current US administration does not want to serve along side nato partners, that was a change since the previous administration.
One particular nato partner served along side the US in many conflicts and this current administration refused to serve along side them, now.

Imo the Uk and the defence secretary have been brilliant throughout taking responsibility and not shying away from what is a very undesirable and complicated situation
The Brits are very skilled in air combat. Just look at the Falklands war, a handful of sea harriers destroyed the Argentinian airforce when completely out gunned and outnumbered. The argentines called them “La Muerta Negra” the Black Death.
The Brits need to stay home. Churchill sold us to Stalin in World War II. So leave us with your help, snakes full of economic interests.

I'm so happy to see the British protecting Romania. We were allies in the past, but too far away geographically to fight side by side. Now the world is a lot smaller, and I hope we never have to fight, but if we do, we know that we have the Brits, Poles, Fins, Americans and all NATO allies next to us. We're in good company and I wish that one day, the Ukrainians will join us too. They've more than proven themselves, and their sacrifice should never be ignored. The Ukrainians belong with us!

Romania is going to be much more in the focus as a jumping-off point for western military equipment into Ukraine, it is much closer to the east in regards to the Donbas.

Romania wasn't part of USSR, and it doesn't have Russian ethnic minority. Multinational protection should have had the Baltic states but they were too cocky now they re scrambling for protection

Correction. Russian airfcraft wasn't flying in their own airspace. Russians are flying over Ukrainian airspace illegally.

Romania is so ready for any kind of attack. They been training with NATO allies and most with USA in the last 10 years. Nato presence is now increased and Romania is a key strategic poing with open at Black sea, borders with both U.E bot Non U.E states so it clearly needs to be on a high alert all the time. Peace and love to all of our brothers around.

The Black Sea is the actual big prize and the main reason for the invasion. Romania has the biggest port in the black sea , Constananta , and Russia has it's eyes on it for decades . If the Russians take Odessa , and south Ukraine is under their control , the pressure will be directly on Romania . Even if Romania is in Nato and EU , and very anti-russian , it will not matter if we are not vigilant . Russia plays for control and it's willing to sacrifice a lot of man power . All of us , we need to be vigilant . From Romania , thank you for your service .

Just want to correct a misrepresentation by the reporter at 1:26. The Russian planes did not “stay in their own airspace”. They were flying illegally in Ukrainian airspace attacking Ukrainian targets.
Russia is not a serious threat in coventional forces but are in nuclear .
Not a serious threat until the first shot is fired. And they will use tactical nukes to destroy NATO military bases.

But in the beginning it was Britain that took up the fight against the Third Reich, although they didn't have to. Hitler had no interest in the British Empire. On the contrary, he admired the UK and wanted an alliance. The US would not have entered the war and Europe would be "German" now. *So, explicitely: thank you America for saving us.*

And 2 years to train the maintenance and ground crews ( a fighter Aircraft has 1 pilot and 11 support crew ) and set up the maintenance and supply infrastructure (it has taken Poland 10 years to move over from Russian aircraft so far )

@@thepunadude I could be wrong here but the rest of the NATO force, excluding the US, is i think slightly bigger then the entire US force. The US contributes low 40% of the 3,3million armed personnel.

Russian fighters won't tangle with the Typhoons. If they did, they know what'd be unleashed. F22's, F35's, F15's.......the Russians would be annihilated, literally. russian pilots are no match for U.S and NATO elite fighter pilots. It's the quality of piloting, in up to the mark high quality fighters that counts.

Escalation is highly likely, conflict with NATO is pretty much inevitable at this stage but dogfights in the sky are not.

Based on what? Our pilots have never had to go up against anyone with an airforce since WW2. The truth is, we don't know how western forces would fare in a conflict with Russia, and let's hope we never have to find out. We lost a 20yr war with goat herders in Afghan. This Mig was very good in the 1959 days. But that's 63 years ago. The 1993 designed F-16 is
strong and fast enough and a "gamechanger" and these F-16 are upgraded to the current state

@@robharris8844U I don't think so...the flightsuits looked tailored. We don't do that. I wore one for twenty years so have an idea although not USAF, I was USMC. Their covers, hats, didn't look right either. Even so, USAF do their fighting in the air, they have the weakest military bearing in our services.

@@stuartnewman6968 NATO and the G7 have been totally united in supplying arms and aid to Ukraine and that has not stopped Putin. He is operating to a different playbook somewhat similar to that of Hitler in the late 1930s and early '40s.

I'd be seriously suprised if the RAF could send 30 jets to Romania, and keep enough for its other commitments in the Baltic, QRA in Scotland and it's active presence over Syria and Iraq. Not a lot of Jets to spare

First looks like mechanical failure, second impossibly bad weather and accident by pilot. But the Romanians are yet to report.

I don't see why NATO cannot fly it's aircraft into Ukraine's western skies if Ukraine allows it to. Just don't engage with the Russians unless Russians shoots at NATO aircraft, in which case NATO has to execise self-defence and strike back. Show of force over Ukraine skies is harmless if invited by the Ukraine (Ukraine is sovereign) but missiles from Russia says the Rus are asking for trouble.
Trouble is Russia would take it as deliberate provocation and may decide retaliation. I think you forget they are also a nuclear nation.
The main reason is probably that NATO IFF is incompatible with Ukrainian systems. Without IFF, Ukraine would have no way to differentiate between NATO and Russian aircraft and would end up firing SAMs at the NATO planes. The reverse is also true - There is a high probability that NATO would accidentally attack Ukrainians since their kit looks just like the Russian kit.
For some reason, the European delta wing aircraft always look a little bit chubby from the top. Like, they could use a small diet.
