How Royal Marines Commandos move around the Arctic

- The UK military has been training in the fjords of Norway, joined by HMS Albion and RFA Mounts Bay.
The vessels have worked together to deliver personnel and equipment to where they need to be.
However, it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the ships and all the people involved in the training moving in the right direction.

As an anglophile Norwegian, my heart pound joyfully by watching British forces besides our own. I might be wrong, but I think it was Churchill that started the commando training program, and I'm not wrong that the Norwegian resistance during WW2 got commando training in Scotland, and blew up the heavy water factory here that the Nazi's was basing their nuclear bomb program on. I'm glad to see, every Christmas, how London accept one of our "Queen of the Forest" 100 year old Norwegian Spruce tree, and decorate it on Trafalgar Square, that we give in gratitude for the invaluable help during the war. Did you know we have the same tune of our song "God save the King", as is used in Britain for "God save the Queen"? :) Lots of love! Alv, Norway.

@@durbledurb3992 No. As in Britain, there were a minority, fascist political group, very unpopular by the majority. Only here it was placed in power after the invasion. The King fled into exile and worked as a voice talking on behalf on the resistance, and said he would rather abdicate then ever support the government by Vidkun Quisling - whom was hung at the end of the war, and in general collaborators and traitors were treated mercilessly. There's lists to this day of the names of children of Norwegians that had German partners. The women had their hair cut off and the men were put in jail, the sadists put to death. The vast majority hated the Nazi, specially because they didn't allow the precious liberty and freedom we had only had since 1814 at that point, the national anthem was forbidden, flags were forbidden, even red hats (one of many silent forms of protests) were forbidden, just like radios Etc. So the resistance was safe among the general population.
I hope you won't go ask any other Norwegian such an insensitive question. I have family that suffered greatly because of the war, so I only bother spending time to explain in hopes it is lack of knowledge that made you ask..

Awesome! Great to see inside a assault ship. Usually the focus is only on aircraft carriers but these guys are just as important
here before all the military experts complain about something, UK best in the business big brains, innovators and spearheading civilization into the future world.
I'm only concerned that our closest allies are being made look bad the fact the Ukrainian favourite weapon is the Swedish/British joint project NLAW says it all our weapons are just as effective if not more, 1st they are cheaper, (which the US industrial complex must hate) 2nd smaller, 3rd lighter weapons and now we have the Sky Sabre that 100% can detect stealth fighters my step dad was a 31 PARA Regiment the in the 1980s to 90s 31 PARA was a Reconaiscene Parachute regiment probably equal than to todays Pathfinders or even the SRR i know he did has worked with special forces this much he has told me but he never will go in detail, My biggest regret was rolling over after I had a baby and my girlfriend put it to me if I joined the Army the family was over.
@@burnyt3077 ? Ukraine has so many ATGM right now, they have no favorite as each do things better and worse. To say you think they think one is better just shows your bias like the OP thinking the UK makes the best everything. Each soldier will have their own preference. Javelin has a better range, seeker, aren't single use and larger warhead but are heavier and more expensive. TOWs(any nations) can't be jammed as they are wire guided, they are heavy is their issue. The NLAW has a horrible range since it's a light missile, but as you stated is lighter and easier to maneuver with. Each have their pros and cons. Each are used better in different situations. None are better then one another.

No it can't... It has a range of 25km, where any aircraft would have launched missiles outside of it's range. Also stealth aircraft don't fly low, so the chance of it picking it up are slim to none. It's a point defense system. The Aster 30 with the SAMP/T would be a better choice as it's range is much longer. Sky Sabre is meant as a last ditch effort to protect high value targets like the US/Norwegian NASAMs.

Great to see a bit of focus on the RFA! I've only ever seen them alongside an HMS pumping fuel and bracing cargo, never in the limelight. Best of British to everyone headed to Op Cold Response!
I served in Norway with 1 PWO , that was part of the UK,s ACE(AMFL). Always traveled on one of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships. From Marchwood to Voss.

My grandfather served on this vessel in the 1950's as a lieutenant surgeon and even then he praised the ships capabilties

Hey UK forces! I've been studying Russian doctrine. Please plan to counter the 40 mile convoy that runs out of fuel and gets towed away by farmers.
Royal Engineers is the answer.
I can remember operation Lionheart, I think there was slightly over 130,000 British personnel involved including the TA, as that's pretty much twice the size of the modern army and nearly as big as all branches of the armed forces put together I'm guessing this one is a tad smaller from the British perspective.
While the current force is too small it does still have firepower and capabilities due to increased technology accuracy meaning it is probably as strong or even stronger than the period of the mid 1980s.
But if Britain had that level of troops with todays technology they would clearly be the second most powerful military in the world.

No force can fight in the cold without the back up of berths, baked beans and potatoes. These ships and personnel are just as important as the blokes wearing green berets.
Logistics.
Doesn’t the saying go that soldiers win battles but logistics win wars? No military person would ever underestimate the need for excellent logistics. The cost of getting it wrong…..well, look at Russia in Ukraine.
My family started service with the Royal Marines about 140 years ago. Great grandfather, grandfather, father (who landed with 47 on Gold on Dday and now a son who is a serving RM Commando.
As I say, here in Europe, we have Russian aggression and, to match that, NATO countries are saying that they are going to spend more on defence; not for 75 years has the need been greater for an extremely well trained Corps of Royal Marine Commandos - who are amongst the best in the world at littoral combat.
And how does our Government match deeds with words? They cut again the number of live rounds that can be fired on budget grounds. Son went to Virginia for joint exercises with the USMC where I am pleased to say that the original Corps “defeated” the US version. Apparently, the USMC are given everything they could possibly need; the best clothes, the best weapons, training and more training without restrictions. Our Marines have to buy their own boots and parkas if they want anywhere near the best and…please don’t use too many bullets because, the more you use, the fewer parties No.10 can have.
I have always read of The Commandos and their close association with Norway 🇳🇴.

Na, it turns out it doesn’t matter how many conventional forces we have because we aren’t going to war against another power with nuclear weapons in any case. Having a big army is only relevant against a none nuclear power. 🤷🏻♂️

I had a chance to train with Royal Marine Commandos as a Maine in the early 1990’s when they were part of a joint training exercise at Camp Pendleton. Well trained, well disciplined Marines they were, great bunch of guys, stay safe boys.
As for recent Russian complaints about the deployment of NATO troops closer to Russia, I say what Putin, Lavrov and every other Russian Official said when asked why their troops were so close to Ukraine, they said “Russian can deploy its troops anyplace on its own territory, when ever it likes without asking anyone”. Ok, fair enough….then there’s the answer to your complaints. Norway is NATO, Great Britain is NATO….therefore NATO can deploy troops ANYPLACE on NATO territory it wants, whenever it wants and for as long it wants. They can also do so, as Russia demanded for themselves, without asking permission or worrying about who is going to complain about it.
On a side note Russia….If you could see what the rest of the Worlds sees and the absolute disgrace your troops are…..You wouldn’t be threatening anybody because if you have to back it up, you’ll need a nuke. If you depend on your troops? Your already done

Keep it up. The NATO Alliance should rattle the opponent's cage as loud and as often possible. Because some of the Alliance's potential enemies have confused pacifism with softness. They should clearly hear and feel that the West is not playing around
All makes one think,The entire defence budget and personnel have been taking a long nap whilst someone has planned his operation,skilfully observed the West,NATO,US for decades which is why we are where we're at right now.

Sadly for you the UK has been outspending Germany since WWII and run the world's 5th largest defence budget. Basically the Germans have been freeloading their defence off the UK and the USA. They recently upped spending but even with that it is barely over the 2% required by NATO while the UK has been over 2% (currently 2.4% GDP) for years.
We need no lessons from the Germans.

@@royalnavyrulebritannia5717 Well not quite it isn't. It is 100 Bn Euros = $110 Bn. Plus Scholz said the 100 billion Euro fund was currently a one-time measure for 2022.
In fact Germany has not actually specified over how many years this new money will be spent with reports suggesting 10 years. TEN YEARS! Plus of course it will take years to have any effect with new kit delivery given the disgraceful current state of German equipment.
Germany says it will now spend 2% of GDP. Big deal. It has been less than 2% since 1990 and therefore saved billions for 30 years so it will never catch up. Guess what the its spending was in 2019 (pre COVID)? $49.28 Bn. So right there in ONE year it saved $20 Bn compared to the UK which, as it happens, funds the 3rd largest defence budget in the world.

Can hold only two patients in ICU? If war breaks out I think the hospital would be overrun very quickly, I imagine they are trained for that eventuality though. You need to climatise to extream weather so it's great to see British forces training up there!
It's a training setup not a war. It doesn't take much brain power to realise that.
If they were deployed during a war it'd be likely that a hospital ship would be posted nearby. Additionally, they probably have procedures for triage and mass casualty situations.

Britain defeated the German navy, severely crippled their airforce, liberated north Africa and east Africa from the Germans and Italians, formed the first special forces units and played a major role in d day and the liberation of Europe.
