Two of my great grandads fought in north africa against the allies. One managed to retire with the army in 1943. When Italy surrendered and the Germans invaded they started hunting down soldiers, so he had to hide becoming a fireman. The other was captured near Tobruk and sent to a British prison camp. He said that the conditions were terrible, prisoners were often beated, left dirty and near starvation. Only when the americans came and took control to the camp things improved, with the prisoners being allowed to shave and clean and a more humane treatment. Until the day of his death he hold a great sens of respect toward americans and a huge hate towards british.

      There's more.
During a brief period of Italian occupation of Epirus.
A huge statue of Mussolini was erected marking the first step of their 'swift' conquest of Greece.
However, when the Greek recapture it and took the statue.
The local craftsman re-sculp the whole thing and made the that Il Duce statue where an underwear instead.
Unfortunately. After the German took over, the Italian soldier return to destroy it.

This story is also attributed to Madrid during the Spanish Civil War, with a Madrid coffee shop owner sarcastically leaving a cup of coffee out for General Franco, who bragged that he would drink coffee on the Grand Via by the next morning. When the Nationalist assault on the city was defeated, the coffee owners quote that ‘tell the General his coffee is getting cold’ made the rounds in the newspapers.
It could be that the Athenian was making a deliberate reference, or it could be a coincidentally similar joke.

The Alpine Wall, it was able to stop De Gaulle and his gigantic ego and superiority complex (common trait amongst Frenchmen) who wanted to annex the Italian region of the Aosta Valley, during the brief and often forgotten second battle of the Alps, the French managed many importante achievements, as you said, they got beaten up by the exhausted German-Italian forces, and even managed to annoy the partisans so much that they decided to unite forces with the Fascists (only time during WW2) just to repel the French back into baguette land, of course Mr. Charles was butthurt he couldn’t get his moment of glory, so he cried to the US to give them that part of Italy, reasonably, the US answered back that the French should learn to take their places, and if they kept acting like the brat they were they would have lost their territories in Africa, only then the French did a favour to the world and finally decided to shut up and accept they only “won” WW2 thanks to the Allies, and had less than no voice at the table.

I'm glad that the video pointed out the underlying tension between Mussolini's fascism versus the Moustache Man's National Socialism. Italy and Germany had a rocky relationship during the inter-war years, contrary to popular memory of their alliance in the Axis.
For example in 1935, when questioned about Germany's anti-Semitic policies by his advisors, Mussolini supposedly laughed and said: "Anti-Semitism? Only blond-haired, blue-eyed idiots worry about such matters!"
Mussolini, in 1934 at a speech in Bari, even ridiculed German race theories and dismissed the Germans as being uncivilised compared to ancient Roman civilization. He declared: "Thirty centuries of history allows us to look with sovereign pity at some Germanic doctrines from the other side of the Alps, sustained by the descendants of people who did not know how to write.... At the time when Rome had Caesar, Vergil and Augustus!"
The alliance between Germany and Italy only solidified in the leadup to WWII, but it was more of an alliance of convenience against common enemies rather than true ideological conviction.

To put it simply, Italy was unprepared for the war it found itself in, and as a result, it was entirely reactionary rather than proactive. Italy's initial plan might have worked if it had gone as intended, but no plan survives first contact with the enemy. The failure of that plan-mainly due to the inability to make a significant material contribution to the fall of France and thus secure any substantial gains-combined with Britain refusing peace, doomed Italy's efforts.
Italy was not equipped for a prolonged war. This initial failure left it constantly playing catch-up, initially lagging by one or two moves, and eventually falling even further behind with moves like the Greece fiasco. It had to be bailed out and was all but carried by Germany. However, once the North Africa campaign failed, Italy had effectively lost the war, as it was too far behind to recover. Germany struggled on, carrying the Axis as far as it could, but there was only so much it could do.

Despite his success in political leadership, Mussolini failed in military leadership. His chosen generals were far too cautious for the scale of World War. It didn’t help that Italo Balbo was killed in friendly fire or that many of Italy’s admirals died in a naval accident. Generals like De Bono were especially incompetent and timid to the point where Mussolini had Graziani essentially take control of the war in Abyssinia. And even despite Graziani being possibly the most effective and loyal generals, Mussolini had to remove him because of Graziani was far too cruel. There is way more factors and nuances to this, but it really is sad how the involvement of Italy in the Second World War led to the collapse of a promising state.
