A peculiar fact is that Nogi single-handedly managed to Make Seppuku Great Again. At the time, it was widely regarded in Meiji Japan as old-fashioned and belonging in the country's barbaric past. With a war hero like Nogi doing it, public perception of seppuku changed drastically. Thus, in his own way, Nogi contributed to the growth of the cult of honourable sacrifice and disregard for one's own survival that culminated in WW2.

It's funny because had Russian power been in the region earlier like in 1592, their shenanigans would've overcomplicated the Korean-Chinese relationship and paved way for the success of Japanese Samurai under Hideyoshi to invade korea and china.
Russia is so darn incompetent that their hubris indirectly encouraged Japan to expand it's influence and rarely consider diplomacy in their next conquest endeavour.

The Emperor’s Army, a million strong, set out to punish the powerful savages of the North.
On the battlefield, in the midst of the sieges, the bodies piled up like mountains.
I am ashamed to show my face to the fathers who remain back home,
Though we few return today in Triumph.
Triumphant Return -written by Nogi Maresuke
