  • The Noisy Cricket blaster, from the movie Men in Black, has been on Bill's list to make for years! Resin 3D printing, molding and casting, electronics, and stellar metallic painting really bring this prop to life! Bill has spent years learning Fusion 360 to be able to make 3D models like this and would love to show you how! Check out our new course:

So cool to see, thanks! Always been such an iconic gun. I have builds of some replicas of the bigger guns on my channel if you ever want to take a look. The Series 4 Deatomizer and the Tri-Barrel. We used Spaz-Stix for the Deatomizer and it blends great with all the metal parts and the Tri-Barrel is metal plated.

WOW! So I was one of the lead Special FX prop artists who created these for the first Men In Black film! We made all of the hero guns and gadgets, including the Neuralizers, but the Noisy Cricket was always my favorite! This is sooooo much cleaner than the ones we made though, haha, we hand sculpted and machined all the parts and then had some of them cast in metal at a foundry, they were pretty crude! But they looked great on film! I recently posted a video on my channel all about how we created these props and showing my personal behind the scenes photos! Thought you might dig it! Awesome job! Cheers😄👍

@@punishedprops Well thank you so much buddy, I really appreciate it! They really were some fun designs to build and it was absolutely one of my favorite films I worked on! Hey here’s a link to my video if you want to check it out! ruclips.net/video/YXyy-wpNkTM/видео.html I also posted videos of props we created for Stargate and Broken Arrow, and I’m going to do videos about the props we did for Independence Day, T2-3D, and more! So check back for sure if you’re interested! Thanks again! Cheers!😄👍

Thanks for sharing, I've found your video and gonna watch it.
Props for movies work on film, but some of the most iconic props are always rude : The Lament Configuration in Hellraiser is a dumb wood cube with some laser cut metal sheets all over, and the Arc Gun in District 9 is wood blocks painted white, so crude you can still see the wood grain under the paint... Hey, it's movie magic and this is why we do it. :)

If you ever do an update, it'd be really neat to have the hammer act as the switch for the LEDs. Incorporate a detented toggle switch the hammer print could slide over. Pull it back to turn on.

For things like cutting the steel rod, or anything else that has a tendency to go flying when cut, grab a large ziplock andmake the actual cut with it inside the bag. Bag's transparent so you can see what you're doing, and it catches the parts.
Another, potential, improvement for a future revision of the design might be to link the switch to the hammer, which would add a bit of fun there when using it in functionality

Great work!!!!!! What a fun gun to build. Modeling sci-fi gun props has become a bit of an obsession for me recently. It’s great to see how you went about chopping yours up for printing and assembly.
Tippy tip, since you used translucent resin, you should be able to simply dab a bit of the same resin on two parts, assemble, then hit it with a UV lamp or flashlight for a few seconds to bond it, as if it were layer to layer. :)
It doesn’t work well with opaque resins as the light doesn’t reach the center. (though now that I think of it… I guess you could just put it around the edges)
Since we’re on the subject tip #2 You can use liquid resin instead of epoxy for filling in gaps, smoothing out parts, etc warm resin and resin thinned with a bit of IPA works wonders. Makes your stuff glossy smooth too.

Just drape a shop cloth over the cutter after you grip the rod with it, and it will catch the piece. It works like a charm!

It may be small. But the Noisy Cricket is possibly the most powerful weapon in pop culture. It surpasses the BFG and Even the lightsaber. It can punch a hole through a truck and even a mountain. Then again it is alien tech, with massive recoil. Proving that size doesn’t matter in terms of powerful weapons. Great work by the way.

@@punishedprops Funny enough the Noisy Cricket in the movie has power settings, the hammer is supposed to be a limiter, in the movie it was not pulled all the way back, and that was the Cricket on 'normal' settings. And we see Agent J flying. In the animated show if the hammer was pulled all the way back it was ridiculously powerful, This was done by Agent K who also flew a good distance away, but the target was obliterated. The MIB gave the Cricket to rookie agents to see how far they would fly and often did bets on the side for laughs, but also veteran agents would use the Cricket as a last resort weapon.

wet sanding works really well on 3d prints and keeps the dust down too.

I remember when the Men in Black cartoon series was new and Burger King had toys in their kids meals based on the series. The place I cleaned as a Janitor at the time made the prototypes of the Kids meal toys and one of the toys that wasn't approved by BK was a noisy cricket which I found in the trash can and decided to keep.

Interesting choice for a registration pin , something that is a PIA to cut requires more prep work than needed for a registration pin. Id use 1.75 filament or a toothpick or almost anything else that someone would have laying around the shop. Apart from that its a nice design I plan on printing this for my collection.

I think this is great! I would make the hammer the switch- hammer back it lights up, hammer forward the light is off... you could possibly use magnets for the hammer mechanism.

Hi. A friend sent me this link. Unfortunately way back when I didn't have the luxury today of CAD or Rapid prototyping. This was a fun prop to make. Mine was made of metal and had to shoot a non-gun charge. Still, the Neuraylzer was harder to make. I had a bunch of weapons to make for that show and notch time. Nice job.

very cool. wish I knew anything about aluminum casting, cause having a full metal version would be rad as heck.

Its not super complicated but does take some special equipment. They do make low melting point resin for jewlery makers so they can design rings, pendants and so forth so you could use a "lost wax" method to make the parts. then the other things youd need are something to melt the metal with, and something to cast with. which requires green sand. Of course you might want to make the parts a tad larger as there is shrinkage.
And granted this is a super abridged version. Yes it seems daunting but so does any hobby or thing you are jumping into.

That is SO fantastic, thank you for showing and teaching us! I'm really in love with Spazstix Ultimate Mirror Chrome, I've used it in mini-spray paint cans before (they didn't have any airbrush bits :( ). That All Clad sealant looks like it works great, doesn't dull the chrome much at all but gives it a good seal.
Have you guys ever tried using Molotow's mirror chrome marker refills out of an airbrush? I've tried it, it gives an even better shine than Spazstix, but it's a LITTLE finicky on how it wants to go on. It likes going on thick which is a shame due to cost. Babbling sorry, bedtime. Best wishes all, thanks again so much for your wonderful videos

Yes I have some of the Moltow paint. I've found it takes a long time to dry, but it does look spectacular.
