  • No one knows what cannabis is going to like in 20 years from now, but cannabis barometer Kevin Jodrey has some good ideas about how to stay relevant. I was fortunate to spend some time interviewing Kevin Jodrey a few weeks ago in the Wonderland Nursery propagation room in Humboldt County. This is the seventh installment. With Shaping Fire host Shango Los. More info at www.KevinJodre... and www.ShapingFir....

The market opening across state lines will help but there's still the problem of over production. Big ag is going to be throwing 10$ pounds out there. The craft farmer has to be able to compete somehow and traditional hand cultivation just isn't going to be able to.
Yes people will spend on high end wines but they can lay those bottles down for 20 years and they only get better. Not the same as a high end cannabis. Even a proper cure and jarring/vacuum sealing, whats the shelf life for cannabis?
There are a lot of good growers out there and how many of them are already overproducing? Add in the rest of the growers from the rest of the states and at the end of the day very few are going to survive whats coming.
The one thing I disagree on is the statement "Its not about taxation" On the contrary, it is all about taxation. There isn't a state yet that hasn't legalized and not taxed this to death. This ag product is a cash cow for the states and they know it. As prices go down taxes will go up. All states are broke and they are looking for every way to get more tax revenue. Soon they will legalize prostitution as long as they can throw a tax on it.

I think niche market will be the more high grade market wich has more value an the big agriculture market will be for the ones that don’t want to pay the money that wants the cheapest high

Synthetics are the future. Once the breeders have incredible strains the labs will eventually be able to recreate the compounds and possibly improve the by changing ratios. They may also be able to make "better than weed" drugs.
More people drink gas station coffee than Starbucks. It will get hard to get people to spend more money based on quality. We are still a consumer society. There has to be a special experience related to the purchase of the product to get people to spend more money. People pay 500 dollars for 80 dollar sneakers because of whose name is on them. The price will settle in the 15 to 30 dollar eights for regular people. Exclusivity will drive up the price. Cigarettes are 15 bucks a pack minimum in NYC. Pot and tobacco are like gold and silver. Pot will always cost more than tobacco like gold will always be more than silver. It seems that even concentrate is based on bud prices. An 80 percent gram is around 4 grams of bud regardless of price point?
I see the govt cracking down on recreational then restructuring so giant corps can control the market. Or the govt cracking down on recreational and pushing medical so the pharmaceutical companies can control the market. I also think there will be a discussion about the drug medicine thing. If pot is medicine and recreational why I can I use opiates or other drugs recreationally? I heard they are using Mdma for therapy. We might be seeing more and stronger recreational drugs.
Cracking down on marijuana wouldn't even be prohibition because it was never legal to the feds.
