- Watch Construction Coach as he finishes his drywall in the cabin build to the a LEVEL 5 finish using L'OUTIL PARFAIT finishing tools from FRANCE! Lets go, this is the 1,2,3, Sand then LEVEL 5.
I’m a drywall finisher, I’ve been at it almost 50 years. I’ve always said there are many ways to accomplish something, some ways are more efficient than others! I’ve always encouraged people to add to their skill sets and I can see you’ve got heart and energy and an eye for detail. I do a lot of carpentry work for my self but I’m not a trained carpenter, I can get the job done though! The skill of efficient drywall finishing happens over time, generally after years of dedication and hard work! House after house year after year one becomes proficient. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Jeff! I 100 percent agree, I learn something new almost every time I do a basement or a drywall renovation. With social media there is a lot of opportunities to learn new thing or how other people are doing it.
I live in Michigan. We never do the level 5 finish. I don't understand the need for it.
I worked in Southern Ohio. They level 5 their finished walls. After primer, my walls were just as flat as theirs. I don't understand the need for a level 5 on new dry wall.
Am I missing something
@@mikemcgee5950 i get it, rolling primer can come close to a level V, but if you do commercial work with 20 plus ft ceilings and lots of natural light along with high sheen paints level five may just be a requirement by an architect, if you don’t do it you “buy it”.

Thanks
I do mostly residential. I've asked a lot of people yours was the best answer, so thank you.
It's strange not seeing any electrical boxes, no blow outs or damaged corners in the drywall to prefill and patch. Did it come bubble wrapped? That's definitely not how my drywall is delivered.
Commentary on what you are doing would have been nice. I could have watched paint dry and had the same level of interest.
Awesome work !
Great work sir ...I like to see how others do their work 👍
Thanks. I just started finishing this way and I’m really liking it. I have a new video coming out Saturday that shows my whole process. Thanks for watching.
You make it look easier than it really is =) thanks for sharing your experience
Thanks for watching, are you finishing any drywall?
@@ConstructionCoach seen tons of comments where a commenter asks a question and the creator doesn't respond but I've never seen that shoe on the other foot before lol
I like to engage! Are you working on any projects?
@@ConstructionCoach we are working on removing popcorn at the moment, with plans to attempt a smooth finish after that, but we're not there yet, thanks for the video!
@@AgentDoubleV_Gaming I just did the popcorn removal on my whole house. First ceiling came out terrible, but then I figured it out. Biggest problem BY FAR BBBBYYYY FAR is the damn drywall dust while sanding. Cover EVERYTHING.
My schools failed me. I work in IT and I'm miserable. I wish someone would have taught me construction. I'm learning as a DIYer but rarely get the results I'm looking for. Like this quality stuff on here.
Practice makes perfect!
Hey man the grass might not be greener, a lot of construction is miserable. The cold is miserable and alot of construction jobs are dangerous and alot of times your forced to work harder than you would like. There not all bad though, and as a male you will enjoy it, but just want to point out the bad.
Dang man, so rarely do I see level 5 finishes in my small dinky town. Thanks for the time and attention!
At least for residential
All this work was for my own cabin, the walls primed so nice!! Thanks for watching! Check the cabin build playlist to see some other rooms that I level 5 finished.
Thanks for sharing. Love the light! What kind of pressure do you apply with that skim coat knife? I typically apply a firm pressure, and take off as much mud as possible.
Thanks for watching! The light is super handy. I apply different pressure as I skim and keep an eye on what it looks like on the other side. I ended up skimming my whole house, it was a bit more work mudding but I felt it made paint easier and the walls look great without that noticeable texture change between priming over paper or on level 5 mud everywhere.
Looks great! Are you doing anything special to the mud in order to roll it on like that?
Thanks for watching. The mud is almost the same as when I use a hawk and trowel. When I did the level 5 finish I add a bit more water. It was the first time I worked with those tools and I found the process the easiest and cleanest way to finish drywall. Such even distribution of the mud. Are you working on som drywall finishing?
So when does the texture crew come in?
Very nice work 👍 did you use all purpose or lite compound for the final skim? Cant figure out which one to go with so much mixed information out there
Final skim I use lite, it spreads easier. Thanks for watching
What kind of roller do you use (not sure if you mentioned it or I missed it)? Thank you, great work.
For level 5 finishes - do you still get a slight (very minor) orange peel texture?
It’s the smoothest finish possible. Orange peel is because of the paint layer, paint light and sand between coats. Thanks for watching
I have been looking for a place to purchase this brand of tools, can you tell me where I can getvthem?
Are you in USA or Canada?
Are these tools sold at Home Depot or Lowe's?
CSR building supply, or France 🇫🇷
Just as easy on the trowel 😉
Are you sure!!
With alot of experience on the hawk and trowel yes. I'm a plasterer in Australia, and fortunately I was given alot of training on the trowel and in the first year of my apprenticeship I learnt to do level 5 finishes with a trowel. Add the years of experience plus I've done alot of solid plastering, rendering and texture coating which basically requires the same trowel skimming technique, you pick it up and become faster. Instead of using and cleaning all those different tools, I find it just as fast do that with the hawk/trowel. In saying that, not everyone has the trowel skills down pack.
How long it did ot take you to complete those 2 walls? Including the prep, cleaning, setting up?
It took a long time because of filming and stuff! I you want to see what all the hype is about watch my other video called Level 5 drywall finishing. The extension poles made it so fast to tape a 14’ high vaulted ceiling. Leave me a comment on that video !
We keep getting streaks and dirt that cause lines what do we do
Have to keep the skim blade clean and have clean mud
Honestly, it looks okay but I could do it faster and just as nice with less sanding with a 14” knife. Just a lot of extra and unnecessary work.
The wall excepts paint way better after a level 5 finish. I can always see the difference between paint over mud and paint over paper.

Level 5 in a cabin?
That’s right! The Construction Coaches cabin is my showcase! Don’t want to see the difference between paint on paper and paint on mud. 41 windows, so it’s hard to hide !
Who makes the light? Please
L’outil parfait - from France 🇫🇷
I am thinking to buy this tool, but it have interchangeable blades?
The handle holds the different size skim blades. I have five different sizes from 3” to 39”.
Like here al de mexicanos k estan de chismosos!!
Haha
How can I achieve a level 5 finish on a plaster wall?
If the plaster is in rough shape add a layer of drywall and start new
where can you get sander kit in USA
You could try CSR. They are in Canada and ship to USA.
What kind of mud do you use, was this all in one day
I use lite joint taping compound, add a little more water so it rolls on nice. This was six different days to get to this finish and it will still take another day of sanding, priming and spot patches to make sure it is perfect.
Whats the name of that telescoping side light?
L’outil pairfait from France 🇫🇷.
Gotta love these videos of people flexing saying I level 5'd my whole house when in reality it didn't need it. Way too much time and money to achieve what a standard level 4 already did under low lighting circumstances.
I have some extreme lighting in the house. 41 windows casting daylight and 160 recessed light throughout. I want things to be perfect.
@@ConstructionCoach maybe for a huge smooth ceiling or a giant wall but a basement? Yea no way man
I love my skim blades and I level 5 all walls and some ceilings. Personal preference I guess, smooth walls are my preference!
@@ConstructionCoach 😆 🤣 you're insane then
Lol
5 grands worth of tools to do a 100
bucks job lol
You should follow the whole build! I level 5 finish my whole cabin 12000 board feet, and a basement development to go. Let’s go
Thanks for wasting our time. Didn’t finish.
