Last week, I recapped the Starz reality show The Chair which pitted Shane Dawson against filmmaker Anna Matremucci as they both adapted scripts into feature films. As we saw, Shane had awful behavior on the set of his movie Not Cool, and he also ran into trouble because people felt the content of his film was too off-putting. By popular request, I've gone back for a full clip breakdown of the movie itself, with commentary throughout every step of my recap.
Let's analyze this and see why Shane's film didn't work. From bad screenplay writing, to egotistical directing and casting decisions, to shoddy editing, this movie has every reason to make you cringe! Drew Monson's character seemed to be the only character that I, as a writer, could actually write and make interesting. The premise is so basic guy sees girl, guy wants girl, guy eventually ends up with girl. It's such a basic premise that's like the plot to every single Hallmark movie. Honestly I feel bad for Drew Monson who seems to be genuinely funny and a tolerable actor. Why I've fallen down this 'Shane is such a bad person and here's the proof' is something that I don't think I'll be able to get out of for a while.
Honestly Drew and Tori’s actress carried the whole movie.
Listen, I would have rather have had a movie about his character and the Janie girl .

@@ghostofyou9721 I haven't seen the entire movie, just Nick's review, but I'm going to have to disagree with you. I'm a writer aswell. I definitely think there's a FETUS of a story, or movie script here. The characters would have to massively be changed, all the offensive jokes taken out, and yeah- it would be massively cliche. However... I mean, if Shane weren't a horrible human being, and an actual writer fixed the script, maybe it would be watchable.
People can be emotionally manipulated into sex. So yes, a guy can still be sexually assaulted by a girl no matter the size. That actually really bothered me so I’m glad you brought it up.

I can't believe I watched this when I was A CHILD. LITERALLY 12 YEARS OLD. I saw uncensored genitals, glory holes and every other gross joke in this movie because I was his audience at the time, his TARGET audience. I totally forgot about this movie until now, I remember pressuring my friend into watching it at a sleepover because I was a Shane fan and we tried to laugh at his jokes, but we both ended up being so disturbed ugh.

The fact that one of the main inciting incidents of their "romance" was him basically forcing himself into her house when she wants him to leave her alone and then coercing her into a kiss really rubs me the wrong way. And I think it's really telling about Shane's character.

I've always absolutely despised ""teen"" movies because it almost feels like a condescending parody. Teenagers don't party that much, and when they do they're lame as hell. They're usually just a group of friends in their parents garage. Sure they have the odd massive house party but these movies make it seem like these stupid house parties are the pinnacle of every teenagers social interactions when in reality only a small group of teenagers actually enjoy going to parties. Also acting like teenagers only think about sex and alcohol is just blatantly untrue and kind of jarring. I've never understood that stereotype. Teenagers are usually very existential and they're approaching a time in their life when they're facing disillusionment about how the world works. I feel like their interest in sex and alcohol is mostly acted upon so they feel like they fit in the stereotypes of being a teenager, they assume thats whats expected of them.
I also can't STAND the assumption that teenagers only speak to each other in cliques. It's so obscenely stupid. The overall assumption that teenagers are all horribly superficial, obnoxious and stupid is just infuriating and belittling. These movies always have to make the main character the ""exception"" because they're special, smart, misunderstood and not like everyone else. The truth is, EVERY TEENAGER FEELS THAT WAY. EVEN THE "FAKE" ONES. Teen movie main characters aren't special, smart or ""different""" and they're not relatable because all they do is live in a one dimensional world where they only see themselves as person with thoughts and feelings and everyone else as a stereotype. Im so glad they don't make these stupid shitty movies anymore.

I’m sorry but it’s true. Like it or not, wrong or not ... that’s how it is. I’m sorry if you didn’t get to first hand expierence it but teens do party A LOT and there’s nothing lame with exploring, expirementint, living life, learning lessons (bad and good) and having some fun throughout the ride. And once again sorry but it’s just the sad truth about cliques. And every “clique” label parties, sometimes cliques will link up and party together every once in a while, but for the most part members of a close friend group want to stay with other members of their close friend group. And once again YES SEX and alcohol usually happen.. a lot, and there’s NOTHING WRONG WITH SEX, it’s how you explore and eventually figure out what you like, what you don’t like, sex is natural and we have hormones that literally make us horny at certain ages, it’s almost like saying omg it’s so hypocritical to get your period... like no it’s not, it’s what happened. And teen drinking isn’t good but let’s be real .. it happens, I think me and my high school class drank more as teens than now as 24 year olds. But we learned from it just like every generation before and after us. It’s not the best or funniest of movies, I would never sit down to watch it but I gotta admit from the synopsis and summary of this and context from your comment, it seems as if he’s taking real life and making fun of it. And I thought that something is wrong with me for not drinking. Turns out my best friend almost died due to alchohol. No copious amounts, even. This movie was geared towards a teen audience but has grown adults showing their genitals?! Huh!? What?!!! Are you serious? Also, you know a movie is good when half of it is exposition...
Then again The Dictator shows decapitation, sex scenes, nudity, softcore porn, masturbation etc and here in Europe it's labelled as suitable for CHILDREN. I was SO mad that that movie was shown in middle school because they could. So exploitative and predatory af to label a movie as something it isn't. Oh and the best part is- the warning labels label violence and cursing. As if a child can't get traumatised because of adults performing sex acts in front of them.
I saw the chair documentary, and the opening was just teenage girls in the theater. It must have been awkward. But he even said he knew his fans were all 15.

@@winkface8 No movie would get a PG13 rating if they showed full frontal male nudity. There are a handful of PG13 movies that briefly show female breasts - which aren't genitalia in the first place - but that's about it.
That actually happened to me in real life when I was a kid. A homeless man tried to show his penis to me while masturbating in a train when I was a little girl, but my mom noticed before he had a chance and took me away and called the police on him. Unfortunately this happened to me 2 other times when I was a teen and walking alone in a park and on the street when I was going home frome school. The last 2 times there was no one to stop them...

When he did the Jake Paul "documentary" (i think it's that one) and people were calling him out for all the dramatic effects and all the unecessarry gasps and dramatic pauses and how he was diagnosing illnesses without any credible background in psychology he was so condescending towards everyone. He changed the editing and got a "professional therapist" but the way he went on about it was like he was right all along and it's the audience that's wrong and he only changed everything to appease them so they would stop barking at him. making jokes about your own insecurities is a coping mechanism. this is much darker, but i used to self harm and now i make jokes about slitting my wrists bc it helps block the pain, ya know? i also make weight jokes bc im overweight and i make jokes about depression and suicide bc i have major depression and used to be suicidal. its just a coping mechanism :/

I'm not defending him by any means, because what he wrote is disgusting and messed up.
From my own personal experience, though, lashing out and making hurtful jokes to others about the same insecurities is a coping mechanism. Completely toxic and I regret the horrible person I was when I did it (Shane obviously gives no fucks).
Again, not defending what he said, but it isn't out of the question that this is one of his messed up coping mechanisms.
His self hate runs so deep he takes it out on others.

As a blind person, the portrayal of the blind girl was so upsetting. I am so glad I hadn't watched this when I was more impressionable and coming to terms with my sight loss as a teenager as it would have set me back so much in terms of acceptance and optimism. They clearly had 0 input from any people who have experienced vision problems (either that or they did and just didn't care) as not only are the jokes offensive, so many other little elements are wrong. Her cane is red and white which would actually mean she is deaf as well as blind.

Fun little tidbit I just discovered - Cherami Leigh and her husband created a web series called CONfessionals where she plays an uptight diva anime voice actress i.e a fictionalized version of herself.

from what i've observed, i would say that historically shane has been resistant to change or growth. just like, in general lol. It was a whole thing, Shane had the haircut, Anthony Padilla, Joey Graceffa, Dan and Phil, etc... But it was never like "oh, that's super hot and amazing hair", more like, that's familiar and their trademark. Fans were into it, but Shane definitely made it a bigger deal than it was. And yeah, Shane really dragged it, I think it was until he saw that everyone else already had their "makeover" and fans were ok with it, he decided to do it too. But by that point, the "shock value" wasn't really there anymore.

But if he’s “retreating back” into what he was like before, she literally said he was - what was it? - soooo regimented. But I don’t think an uptight, regimented person would want to blow of school and take an impromptu road trip to Kentucky. So is he super uptight and regimented, or does he not care? Which is it? There’s zero consistency in these characters.
And why does he act like shaving your head is physically painful. He makes this horrible grimace when he does it like it hurts (bc he’s trying to be dramatic but it just looks like he’s in pain). Plus, that scene is bad because you want to be able to actually see the shaved head but because they probably didn’t plan anything out, when he does it, you can’t even see where it’s shaved because the rest of his hair covers it up. So it’s not visually dramatic at all, but you can only do it once so they had to keep those takes.

I just want to add right before the “r*pe” scene, Scott’s ex is wearing desi apparel saying the jingling is perfect for sex. This was appropriation and highly offensive. As a Desi myself when I watched that scene I was so disgusted and horrified. Still I’m appalled just thinking about it. So gross and disrespectful..

I’m an actress and I actually know the person who played the girl in the wheelchair. While she’s not exactly disabled in real life she’s has had a a lot of health issues. She’s really struggled the past few years but she’s literally the sweetest girl in the world. She always had the brightest smile and the best upbeat attitude. I just hope this is not how people choose to remember her. As a cheap punchline in a half- assed movie.

Shane casting himself as being this big heartthrob reminds me a lot of Onision’s self inserts in all of his books. I think that Scott was supposed to be this version of Shane that he wished he was and wanted to be when he was in High School.
For onision, despite being a psycho, I can at least say Onision is conventionally attractive, especially at the time.... Shane has always looked like a dive bar personified
