So, I'm in a screenwriting class, and the professor used to write freelance for star trek, and he says that if you compare your idea to something else, a producer is more likely to pick it up, but you have to specify what makes it different from the original show, too. So what I'm getting at is "American idol, but they're in costumes the whole time" is actually something a producer would eat up.
Oh my god yes! That’s exactly how it works.. every time you pitch an idea you gotta be like “its like *movie title* meets *movie title*”
I guess the idea to the producer is, "well that was successful, so an idea that is related to this successful thing is more reliable than a completely new idea"
@@esquared722 which, that's actually just a psychological idea so I assume it doesn't work out realistically for most movies unless the audience is able to relate those concepts
We call them "comps" and it's a way to make sure your idea will find an audience, since the comparable has been a success, but also with a fresh spin. Most creativity is combining known concepts in a new way !
Late, but this also served to launch the original star trek show. It was marketed as "a Western, but in space". 😂
masked singer is based off a korean show which is designed to highlight great vocalists in unappreciated/unpopular kpop groups which makes the format make a lot more sense rather than just random celebrities.
why would it make more sense ? the whole point of the show is to guess who it is it doesn’t matter like 😭😭😭
It’s somewhat of a competition show so although yes, they are trying to guess who the singer is, the main point of the Korean show is the competitive part and the singers showing how good they are before revealing their identity. It’s quite funny watching the difference between the original and spin-offs in the us and uk because damn do they turn the wackiness up to ten.
One of my favorite singers from my favorite band was on that show, and it was amazing
Came here to say this too!
@@ongakira In South Korea, kpop group members cannot be said to be "singers", they are idols who sing. In the past, for the majority of South Korean people, an idol singer was not a real singer, idol vocal abilities were questioned, and not a few thought idols could not sing. If there are idols who have good vocal skills they understand it's all because of the needs of the group, they know there are at least one or two people who can sing well, and the rest are just beautiful people dancing. That's why Masked Singers are very important for idols back then, even in the early episodes many underestimate idols, if someone has a good voice they will guess that the person is an actor or comedian and not an idol. Solji EXID's victory in masked singer was like a hard blow to South Korean viewers because they didn't expect that she's an idol in a group with sexy concept. Unless they are soloist idols, then their singing skills are not in question.

If anyone’s curious, the Disney XD show where they basically just play RUclips clips is called Player Select, very good for small kids who want to watch RUclips but their parents won’t let them because it’s too inappropriate. The show features censoring, ridiculous special effects, the same clips in almost every episode, SO MUCH FUCKIG FORTNITE, the clips are usually less than 5 minutes for each youtuber and you have no idea what happens in the end of the video, and ads every 3 minutes. :)

@@idontneedaname318 yeah definitely. It was the only thing my little brother watched for a while
The funniest part is that, when you say ads every three minutes, I'm willing to bet that you mean ads for other Disney media. Because that's one that I remember from the Disney channels. They never had any non-Disney commercials.
And it always struck me like... why would you spend so much time advertising your other stuff? I get that it's marketing and that they're a big corporation so they can get away with it, but why not like 1 ad break in the middle of the show? Why repeat the same commercials over and over ad infinitum? Maybe it's a ploy to increase viewer retention without needed to make more content to fill in the gaps where the ads are... but also why would they need viewer retention when they aren't getting paid for the ads??? Most of the ads are for other shows or movies which show up on that channel or one of the other ones like it.

Hi! Some edits:
1. I am aware that it’s licensed so not technically a “rip off”, however I think everyone who’s seen the original from Korea can agree that its a lot better than whatever the hell America did to it

The TV station law thing is BS too. I'm a law student and we just read that case on Free Speech. The cable companies argued that the government infringed their free speech by making them host broadcast stations for free. The government was concern that broadcast (which is free) would become inaccessible since advertisers were leaving broadcast channels. In the interest of providing free public interest channels, Congress forced cable to host the broadcast channels. They whined about it as taking up a channel spot that could have hosted a cable channel. So it doesn't actually cost them money, it just takes up one of their channels which now they can't use to make money.
Having been working for a cable company, we lose money on TV services. It costs us more to provide TV to customers than we can recoup in advertising over 3 years. Typically the pricing is at cost and the only way to get any profit is to tag on the additional fees or get you to add internet. Then we cross our fingers and hope you don't call for a truck roll to your house since statistically you're likely to have a truck rolled to your house within the 2nd year of service (hence the 1 year contract rate)

There are some good things about Law and Order: SVU, but unfortunately they often take real victims' stories and dramatize them, sometimes to the point of invalidating/diminishing the real situation.

It's so frustrating to me when shows like Masked Singer or Good Doctor get popular, because they are direct ripoffs of Korean shows
Well, technically it's not a ripoff it's a remake
Wait till you hear about The Office
I'm frustrated that The Good Doctor is seen as a good and respectful depection of autism.
@@electrogeek77 When I was diagnosed with autism (got diagnosed late in the game because of the bias against diagnosing females with autism, how fun), the doctor had asked me if I had heard of a show called The Good Doctor, and I said "All I've heard about it is that it portrays autistic people really badly." and she just kinda stumbled over that part and went on with telling me my diagnosis. 16:54 I live in an area with poor internet connection...it is 100% better to just get streaming services rather than cable.
Yes, sometimes it means no tv exactly when I want it. But our cable options are all predatory companies (and we're unable to put up the satellite dish for direct TV due to not having a backyard in the apartment complex.
Our wifi is at a set price every month, same with the streaming services. It really makes a difference. Not just in price, but in overall mental health knowing we're not struggling to keep up with all the cable mess.
“I can see your voice” and “masked singer” were both ripped straight from korea, who’s been doing them for years. The laziness is impeccable (edit: I’ve never gotten this many likes on anything ever, I’m glad to see y’all agree with me)

The "Broadcast TV Service Fee" baffles me so much because those are the channels you can get for free as long as you have a tv antenna (which can be purchased at Walmart for as cheap as $20). My family has never had cable, and we still get a decent amount of channels with just our antenna. THESE CHANNELS ARE FREE. How are cable providers charging customers for channels that they could get for free without cable? It makes absolutely zero sense.
RUclips: “Hey watch this ad and everything is free.”
Cable: “Hey pay us $200 so you can watch 100 ads every 30 minutes while you watch ghost hunters, which totally isn’t fake. 😀👍”

The voice is actually a show from the Netherlands called the voice of holland, the guy who made it even won an Emmy for it. But a few years ago, it came out that there was a lot of sexual harassment happening on set, one coach was a r@pist, an other coach on the ‘voice kids’ was accused of p€dophilia (they’re still investegating)
So even tho that show is of Dutch origin, I don’t think it will air here again
I'm British, so this is all very strange. In the UK there's Freeview, which gets you access to a basic set of TV channels with ads for free. There's also several streaming services connected to TV channels that allow free access to their library with adverts, or you can pay to watch without adverts, like RUclips.
i’ve never heard anybody talk about it, but Masked Singer is an unfunny rip-off of a korean singing/variety show, the english title being King of Mask Singer. one of the most noticeable differences is that in the korean ver, the singers are already known to be in the music industry; whereas in the american version, the contestants are people like ninja and in no way are able to be guessed, which is the entire premise of the show. also ryan reynolds was on an episode of the korean version for some reason lol
no seriously, when ninja was revealed my family and i were so confused because we had no idea who the hell he was lol. also it's only entertaining when its either 1) actually good singers and 2) celebrities that are actually mainstream. i just hope as seasons go by, that there's better celebrities on it. but this is definitely the only stupid show that i just mindlessly enjoy.
@@jennym7786 yes, that's my main problem with the U.S version. How the fuck am I suppose to guess who is singing when I hve NEVER heard any of these people sing before. In the Korean version since they're all idols I may hve heard their voice or ATLEAST heard of their name or group before.
Also you can tell it really shifted away from the music and more to the most unique/flashy outfit in this version. While I don’t think it’s bad to do such fun looks you can tell where they are placing the emphasis compared to the Korean version.
the deadpool marketing team is wild lmao

i know how late this is, but spectrum is literally so evil. also i apologize for how long this will be. my dad is an older man, lives in the middle of nowhere, and isn’t super up to times in terms of new tech. he pays $313 A MONTH for a house phone, internet, and cable. spectrum’s internet doesn’t work in the middle of nowhere, when we asked them to give us literally any connection, they said there was nothing better for our area (none of our devices will even connect to the wi-fi) but they STILL charge us monthly for the internet that doesn’t even exist at our house. my dads a farmer, so he’s not exactly bringing in the big bucks, it’s so evil that he’s being taken advantage of like that. i don’t even know how to go about getting money back/cancelling the package for something else because i don’t live anywhere near him/know the info. this is your psa to avoid spectrum at all costs!
I honestly cannot believe that the cable industry is still around. The only people that I know that still have cable are over the age of 50. It’s the biggest ripoff right next to overpriced internet.
My grandmother has cable because she doesn't understand streaming, my dad is her caretaker and got a smart TV and she tries to change the channel when we're streaming things. They took away her Turner Classic Movies channel from the basic package and she was so sad and confused 😭😭
My parents have cable, but only cuz they get it for free (my mom works for cox) but yeah she always say that if it wasn't free she wouldn't have gotten it.
When you aren't american so none of these shows are airing in your country, but you watch the video anyways since you like Drew making fun of things

We have versions of them though.;) The generic reality shows, singing contests, other types of contests, etc. But the zillion detective shows are actually the same, just with subtitles. So I can relate. The only tv channel I tend to watch these days is our public broadcasting, because they have the best documentaries, but I can watch them online from their app (using Chromecast it's really like tv).
@@elainelouve nah some of us don't have it this extreme in the UK at least, it's hard to find good content cos the rest is just air
@@elainelouve you're lucky enough to have some diversified content. In my country television is basically just
"Here's news about a corrupt government official from an area you've never heard of/heard too much. Next up is an alleged scandal of a celebrity you don't even care about. In the evening we have 10 videos snatched from RUclips probably without permission and then made into some sort of "funny compilation." On weekends we have poorly dubbed movies that mostly got cut off by commercials. Oh, and we also have heavily censored children's cartoons. Brand new! It's content you've seen on other channels but now it's on _our_ channel!"
Edit: just saw what's on TV and they've incorporated last year's memes into their editing. I'm never turning that thing back on again.
Same. But now I realise that its not just the people in my country that are trying to rip me off. Everyone in other countries is getting ripped off too lmao.
Another RUclipsr I follow ended up on American Idol and gave a breakdown of how totally fake it is. There was no audience when he filmed, all of that was added in post. The judges responses were edited. His performance was cut down only to the gimmick part, and all of the actual talent on show was cut out, as a mocking and laughing audience track was added in post. 90% sure this was all before COVID, too. That's just how they make these shows.
They edit everyone to make them look worse or better, and they invent the audience reactions in editing. The audiences are apparently filmed separately and just given cues to follow (or they just don't have audiences at auditions and just use a clip library from actual live events). So I daresay the level of fakery and pre/post scripting is about on par with every other damn "reality" show.
Murder mysteries are not as predictable as you make them out to be. They aren’t meat there for the themes or unusual structures (although they can happen in the best of them). They are meant like crossword puzzles or riddles to engage your brain in different way when you try to solve the mystery based on clues and what the tropes of the genre are. Some really fail at this element and are more mindless (and even some highly regarded ones like Sherlock was at one point can’t function as puzzles) but many really are mysteries.
Just hearing “Spectrum” sent me into fight or flight mode. They are the only internet provider in my rural area and they know it. They charge insane amounts for WiFi and randomly send mystery charges to my card and overdraw my bank account, which then causes the bank to charge me massive overdraft fees. When I call to contest charges I’m on hold a few hours and get transferred an average of 4 times. No one ever knows what’s going on when you call. They deactivated my WiFi for no reason on accident and I spent 4 hours on the phone until 2am and got transferred 6 times and nobody could figure it out. When I finally got to the last person they figured out that the person three transfers ago put the issue into the computer wrong and listed it as an issue a tech would need to come to my house to fix. Unfortunately only she could fix it and their department closed while I was winding through the next few transfers. I had to call the next day and do the whole thing over again. They promised they wouldn’t charge me for this mistake. They charged me $150 dollars the next day and overdrew my bank account for the millionth time.
EDIT: THEY DID IT AGAIN TODAY. WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING ME FOR I HAVE DONE NOTHING AHHHHHH
i hate them so much. thankfully they aren’t the “only” one in my small area but they are one of the bigger ones. i bet they wont be around for much more, maybe not even 5 more years. people are fed up and i bet theyll get sued to hell n back
Just reading this gave me extreme levels of anxiety.
Yep they have a monopoly in my area.
Pretty sure most of this isn’t even legal? I’d file a lawsuit for these “mystery charges”.

20:39 This is my mom, 100%. I pay for our internet and cable, and I never watch cable. I’ve tried to convince her to go to streaming (which we already have accounts on), but she just does not like the… endless choices? I also know she hates not having ads, cause that’s when she can go to the bathroom! Idk, it seems really obvious it isn’t worth the price, but I don’t think I’ll ever get her off it…
I think misleading prices needs to be illegal, I don't get why they're allowed to continue with that
Because it is not illegal once you click on the price the hidden fees are revealed so there is no false advertising
Many many loopholes
It's only misleading cause we don't read the agreement before we sign I understand why that's shady but they literally tell u to read it and make u certify that u read it and then we as consumers go it's 3 pages I'm not reading it I'll just sign it. And then we go wtf they never told me that... Then they can legally say well... We did. We reply u know I didn't read that. Then they can reply u literally checked a box that said u read it!

The real horrors of US television become apparent if you are unfortunate enough to spend any significant length of time in a hospital. Thank the stars that they allow electronic devices now.

But my dad especially loves watching those crime tv shows, from then and now, all of them 😂 I think I recognised every single one Drew mentioned when he gave the examples, cos my dad watched them. We live in Austria, so we also get German and Austrian crime shows and films. Drew, I went through this and so much more. A absolutely nightmare. I was screwed 2x by different providers over 2 years later saying I never sent equipment back.
