@@emmiemust6033 If he did something like the author of The Mists of Avalon? I wouldn't be able to read anything else by him. It would obviously make me very sad since I love his books but I wouldn't be able to support him.

re. separating an author from their work- I can't, really. If I read a book and love it and then it turns out the author's a jerk, it doesn't taint my reading experience but I'm unlikely to buy more of their books because I don't wanna support that. If I hear about an author being a jerk before I read any of their books, I probably won't pick them up.

If i get the books for free like found them outside of apartments (people do that here) or at one of the community bookcases in town i usually give it a go but i dont want to support a author via buying his books there are enough books out there and better people to support

    • @halliehurst4847
      @halliehurst4847 5 лет назад +7

Buying from second hand bookshops and charity shops is a way around this if you really want to read a book but hate the author. Borrow from libraries as well! That way your money goes to a good place.
Also if the author is dead check to see where the money goes to.
I’ve come across this problem *twice* when I was halfway through a series before and it’s infuriating. You want to know what happens next but definitely don’t want to support the author.

    • @AwkardBookShenanigans
      @AwkardBookShenanigans 5 лет назад +4

Yea same. Though, especially if the author is still alive and writing, then I don't wanna support them. If they're dead maybe it doesn't matter that much. But I'm just immediately turned off from even trying an authors books if I already know they're racist/homophobic etc.

Marion Zimmer Bradley is a tough one for me. I read Mists of Avalon before I knew anything about what she did to her children. And I love the book. So much. But I can’t look at it now without thinking about what she did. I’ll never buy a copy of her books again.
When an author is alive and they do something/believe in something I’m firmly against...I don’t want to support them. There are too many good books in this world. Life’s too short to make horrible people successful.

  • @SuperHappyNotMerry

In response to separating the author form their work for me it is a case by case scenario. There is really a lot of nuance to be had in these issues and I will admit I would have a harder time dismissing an all time favorite author if they did something bad than I would with an author I've never read anything from. It also depends on how bad I perceive the allegations against them are, which is very subjective.
As an example I will mention Phillip Pullman who wrote His Dark Materials which is amazing. Lately I heard people accusing him of transphobia. I was honestly surprised because he just didn't seem like the kind of person who would do that but nevertheless I researched the issue. I found out he had made a comment that I didn't interpret as transphobic but that nevertheless was vague enough that I understood why someone else might make an argument for it being transphobic. As such I made the decision to continue reading his works because I still enjoyed him as an author.
As another example the author you mentioned Marion Zimmer Bradley who committed inarguably more terrible crimes, there is no way in hell I could ever read or support such an author's work. I would feel complicit in a sense.

I am definitely a person who can't separate the artist from the art. I've had to let go some of my favorite books as well as a few fav authors bc I just can't seem to separate them and don't want to support them in anyway. I've learned not to put any author on a pedestal since I've been disappointed too often. While no one is perfect, ethics do speak a lot (at least from my experiences)

I am so excited for your shelf/library reorganization but also realize that might be a big undertaking for you so take your time with it! And I won't buy books from authors who don't represent themselves well I can't as books are worth money and libraries only have so much space so I want there to be room for good stuff if that makes sense! Regarding separating an author from their work, if I find out something after I've read a book, I'll keep the book, but won't read anything else. Oftentimes, I've already stopped reading their work for other reasons. If I haven't read them yet, then I usually won't unless I already have the book.

I think the topic of separating the author from their work is usually oversimplified. Writing is never separate from an author. An author's experiences, world view, and even sometimes deepest feelings influence their writing. Even when it's fiction, it's still a glimpse into the author's mind. You might be able to block out things you don't like about an author so that you can still enjoy their work, but in all honesty you can never actually separate an author from their work.

Especially when i know nothing about the author other than their name and when i just want to read for the sake of it, not really critiquing the writing. I wish I was able to somehow get The Kept Woman. I love Karin Slaughter novels (and was very happy to discover her with Pretty Girls, it is not her best novel but certainly got me hooked).
As for separating the artist from his work, I actually try to do that since I believe the art should not be valued by the same criteria (that we value a human being) however I find it very hard to do. Luckily so far the writers whose work I enjoy seem to be nice people. However it is the film makers and actors I'm having trouble with. I used to love Woody Allen films, he was one of my all time favorite directors but now every time I wanted to watch a film of his, I find that I simply can't. But I'm trying to get over this since logically I think art should be separated from its maker.

For me personally, separating a book from an author comes down to their opinion versus how they have hurt other people. If what I don't like is simply a difference in opinion, I'll still read and enjoy the book. But if the said author has murdered, or sexually abused someone there is no way I can mentally or emotionally support someone in that way no matter how good their book may be. Also, thank you for mentioning the mists of avalon tea. I was not aware of it but now that I am it's been taken off my tbr. So thanks!

Now there are exceptions to this: jk rowling who needs to stop; and a few other authors that how they behaved makes me adamant I will never read them...but for the most part if I like a book I don’t really care what they do outside of it.

I can't read translated books either, now that I can read English, I feel like I'm missing something if I'm reading the translation. And for that very reason I can't use my library because they only have a handful of books in English but nothing I like, which is very frustrating.

I like your blouse. Also, I want to get rid of Shades of Magic series but I don't know anyone who wants them, and I lowkey want to give the last book another go.

I think with separating creators and work... it depends. There are some works that would still be very valuable even if it turned out the author was some horrible being. But like, if an author promoting really hateful philosophy, I would probably purposefully decide not to purchase/support their work.
An author that comes to mind for this kind of controversy for a "classic" is Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged), some people really disagree with Objectivism (which I think she supported) and so don't support the novel. But I don't know enough about the topic to know my own position.

I’m kind of the same, I try to separate authors from their work but majority of the time I end up feeling guilty and I can’t enjoy it anymore without remembering what they did

I can't separate the author from their work, I have a friend that is a super fan of Cassandra Clare's books and tells me to read them all the time, but my sister told me some very bad things about her and now I can't read them, my friend says is all lies but there's no way I can know and I don't want to risk it

Not lies. There are evidences online. You will be able to find the copy of the lawsuit and word by word reproduction of someone else's work in her works. Not to mention her self plagirism where she published Draco trilogy as TMI. Plus she bullied a uni student online and either got her expelled or threatened to. SO.... nope. Big Noooooo.

With separating the artist from the art it depend on a few things: genius and what they are being accused. Not an author, but I use Micheal Jackson I have long since had to recconcile the man I know him to be- a child molester- and the way his musical genius changed music and shaped my childhood. It was hard but you have to break it up.
    For others it just depends

it's so difficult to separate an author from their works, even if i do love the book. like when i read ender's game i absolutely loved it and bought all the sequels but only read 3 before finding out that orson scott card is really shitty. i could never bring myself to pick up the rest of his books and eventually ending up getting rid of them. i still kept the first 2 bc i did really enjoy them but i don't know if i'll be able to reread them any time soon :/

      I guess I'm lucky I didn't care for Ender's Game lol
I learned only after about the author so I never finished the second book I had picked up by him :S

There are many many authors out there with great books (or films, paintings, whatever) to find reasons to read books by terrible people. I used to try to separate them but it doesn't work for me.

I looked up Zimmer on Wikipedia and it said the money from sales of Mists of Avalon will be donated to Save the Children. Even if that weren't so, she is dead and wouldn't profit. Her children would, I think. So, might be a good thing not to avoid buying the book. Just a thought.

When it comes to separating the author and the work, I personally can’t. If I already own the book then fine, but I won’t buy anything from them because I refuse to give my money to a bad person

Whatever you don't read The Girl Next Door. Karen Slaughter is tame compared to Jack Ketchum. To be fair, it is based on a true story which is horrifying. I just unhauled 120 books myself. It's so freeing.

This is unrelated to books lol, but you mentioned a book for the beach & where to French Canadians tend to go for beach? I realize idk. In southeastern US, we tend to go to Florida and North + South Carolina
