He does not get enough credit for his overall acting skill. I watch “JFK” from time to time just for his role. I think he outshines the entire all star cast that includes Costner, Pesci, Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, Ed Asner, Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Jack Lemmon, etc

@@nealm6764 My sarcasm detector is going crazy for some reason... This sort of natural acting from non-actors is not unheard of. Sometimes it's on purpose, like in this case, and sometimes it's a happy accident like when Dustin Hoffman yells "Hey, I'm walking here!" in Midnight Cowboy to the cabby who was not supposed to be there (the street was blocked off for filming but somehow this cabby squeaked through). The cabbie's actions and reaction is real.
And that kid would not be the first kid who did a movie and then never did another one. The scrap heaps of Hollywood are littered with them.

    Buck: Apartment.
    Miles: Own or rent?
    Buck: Rent.

    Buck: Lots of things.
    Miles: Where's your office?
    Buck: I don't have one.
    Miles: How come?
    Buck: I don't need one.
    Miles: Where's your wife?
    Buck: Don't have one.
    Miles: How come?
    Buck: It's a long story.
    Miles: Do you have kids?
    Buck: No I don't.
    Miles: How come?
Buck: It's an even longer story.
Miles: Are you my dad's brother?
Buck: What's your record of consecutive questions asked?
    Miles: Thirty-eight.
Buck: I'm your dad's brother, alright.
Miles: You have much more hair on your nose than my dad.
Buck: How nice of you to notice.

Also a great thing about John Candy is every story people tell about him is that he was basically like his character in this film. I think it was Eugene Levy telling a story when he had broken his leg and called John to pick him up from the hospital. He basically came in with the, "Geez, ya big clutz, come on you," and then carried him to the wheelchair.
He started on SCTV (basically Canadian SNL) and SNL tried to get him to go to their show a bunch of times, but he refused out of loyalty to the people and show he started with. Classy guy.

I loved watching you enjoy this classic from John Candy and the rest of the cast. So much fun, heart, reality. Funny though, in this review I didn't even hear about the PANCAKES on his birthday!? "Who's Harry Crumb", or "Stripes"! Hope to see some. Thanks for the watch!!

This is one of my all-time favorite comedies. I saw it in the theater when I was ten, and loved it ever since. John Candy was absolutely amazing in this movie. Like others, I tear up at the end freeze frame with him smiling and waving. After he died, many who knew him said that was exactly how he was as a person, just a warm, funny, caring person.

If only we had John Candy still with us....just imagine how many more priceless gems of side splitting laughter he would have given the world and the world needs more laughter and less sadness and hate that we have an unfathomable amount of and not nearly enough of the humor and good memories that we truly need in our lives.

Here's the thing about John Candy, in everything of his you'll ever see: Authenticity and sincerity.
No matter what character he plays, he has the ability to make your stomach hurt crying with laughter, and then tear your heart out with just a look and a soft, sincere voice. He can evoke sorrow and hurt better than almost anyone. Very few actors can embody that combination of traits, and I've never seen any of the few do it as well as John Candy does. He's in a league all his own.

Other great John Candy movies: "Brewster's Millions," "Summer Rental," "Armed and Dangerous," "Spaceballs," "The Great Outdoors," "Splash," "Stripes," "Who's Harry Crumb?" and "Canadian Bacon." Though he died young, he was one of my favorite 80's comedians. He was the lovable comedian who was able to be funny without being crude; seeing him is like seeing an old friend walking through the door. As far as John Hughes movies go, give "Weird Science" a shot; very funny movie and it has a young Robert Downey in it.

Buck's girlfriend as you noted was in Field of Dreams, also that youngest daughter in the film was also in field of dreams, she was the little girl that choked on the hot dog. And the principle with the big wart plays Carmela's mom in The Sopranos.
