      @@joeconcepts5552 Yeah and even though Del was super inconsiderate by using up all the towels and the noises he was making you're absolutely right in that he has been on his own for so long he forgot all those social cues one should have and he was also never trying to do it on purpose or be mean spirited. I understood Neal's frustration to lash out at him but he crossed the line into being plain cruel by attacking his character - who he is as a person. Things were going wrong for Neal since before he even met Del and he took it ALL out on him. That's why I love how Del stood up for himself and made Neal feel like the smallest man on earth for taking it too far ;)

    When you learn about all the deleted scenes, it really makes you appreciate the ending much more. They sit down at a diner after they talk at the train station, and Del tells him that he gets attached to people during the holidays tries to help, but for some reason he felt more attached to Neal and “couldn’t let go”. A line that was ad-libbed that still stuck with Steve Martin years afterwards.

      Also, Neil's wife thinks hes cheating on her throughout the movie. Which better explains her reaction at the end when she realizes he was telling the truth. They really should've left that in at least.

    • @joeconcepts5552
      @joeconcepts5552 2 года назад +1

      That does sound like a touching little scene I'd like to see. But from a film-making standpoint, it could have more impact to just quickly cut to them walking down the street. Could be an example of writing a long scene of dialogue thinking the plot needs explanation, while in the final film, we get it already. Del's a very lonely guy who tries to make friends everywhere he goes.

    Another great reaction. My favorite scene is where he flips out at the car rental counter. Fun fact, he says the "F" word 19 times in that scene. That scene is what gave the movie it's R rating too. Second to that scene as a favorite of mine is the same as yours. The skeliton/devil scene.
    John Candy insisted on wearing the devil costume, though John Hughes was hesitant to let him do so. The day they filmed that scene, they had several studio executives visiting the set, and there's John Candy walking around in a devil costume. 🤣🤣

      Another fun fact is how the F word is not used anywhere else in the movie. Most films, once they know they've cemented an R rating, will go ahead and use it through the film. But it's just the one scene, making it even more hilarious.

If you want to see more of him, you definately have to see Cool Runnings (1993), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Brewster's Millions (1985) and, if you wanna see how his non-comedic acting was underestimated, Oliver Stone's JFK (1991) which I highly recommend!

    There’s apparently a 3 hour cut to this movie and one of the deleted scenes involves them in a diner after Del confesses about his home and wife. Del explains how he left his home because it was too painful there without his wife and how he attaches himself to people during the holidays so that he isn’t fully alone but with Neil it was more difficult for him to let go. That honestly sounds beautiful to watch and the other deleted content sounds great. I say we get #ReleaseTheHughesCut going

They had overshot Chicago by at least two hours. (This is apparently covered more in the original three hour cut but I've never seen the scenes.) But that's why when they're in the refrigerated semi, they're approaching Chicago from the north.

    John Candy was the FUNNIEST actor ever. Might I suggest Uncle Buck & The Great Outdoors. Two of Candy’s greatest movie’s ❤️

    Uncle Buck has to be John Candy's funniest film. But he was great! Then there's Cool Runnings, The Great Outdoors, Canadian Bacon, Stripes, Space Balls

    Glad you liked it, one of my favorite comedys...
    I also like how they used music in this gem of a film (If you know the swiss Band Yello, you know what I mean...).

    The final scene is even more poignant when you realise that the original script had a subplot where Mrs Page feared Neal was spending so much time away from home because he was having an affair and she believed all these delays were actually excuses as he was with the other woman. It's not until she sees Del on the doorstep and says "Hello Mr Griffiths" that she realises it's was all true and she had nothing to fear.

    The Paul Young song, not sung by him, at the end made the scene more impactful.

    Happy Thanksgiving you two beautiful people! That part with the car between the trucks and John Candy dressed as the devil had my wife and I laughing just as hard as you two! I never knew there was a post credit scene 😮

    11:08 Yeah, apparently that moment was improvised. They secretly kept the cameras rolling on Steve in that moment and he was preparing for the next scene. He had no idea, that he was being filmed in that moment, that´s why it feels so genuine.....

    I've always wondered, how did Neil get into the shower in the first motel without having already seen the mess Dell made and also seeing that there was on only one small towel left? He acts surprised when he sees it. No way Dell was in there during Neil's shower.

    • @joeymac3777
      @joeymac3777 2 года назад +6

      I think Neil was just exhausted and dirty, and desperate to shower, that he likely just got in and didn't pay any attention

      I've always assumed Dell used the bathroom while Neil was in the shower because that's exactly the sort of thing Dell would do.

      @@randall-king You may be right. The way they looked at each other over the single bed kind of ruled out the idea of being in the same room while one person was naked in my mind.

    Before Neil gets on the train to go back to his family the ad poster behind Del says ''Stay in touch''. Don't know if it was deliberate on John Hughes part but I like to think that the universe was sending Neil a signal.

    When Del takes his shoes/socks off on the airplane, all I can think about is that Bill Burr/Conan O'Brien interview where Burr says, "If I were a dictator, those people would be eliminated" lol.
