John Candy's one of the few famous people I genuinely miss. He gave so many fond memories, especially to kids and young people, who watched his movies back in the 80s and 90s. Much missed and irreplaceable.
Years ago, I read an interview Steve Martin gave about this movie. He said that the final scene in which Del revealed he’s homeless was longer. Del sadly explains that his wife, Marie, had gotten terribly sick & they used up most of their money on her treatment. Unfortunately, she passed away & Del couldn’t afford to keep the house they lived in, and the bank foreclosed on it. He was too grief-stricken over her death to want to remain there anyway, so he packed up what few things he had left & just traveled around aimlessly until he met Neil. Steve Martin said it was the greatest, most heartfelt performance John Candy ever gave - that by the end of the monologue, he (Steve Martin) & nearly the entire crew were in tears, weeping at how sad & genuine it was. Ultimately, John Hughs chose to cut the story out, though, because he felt it was just TOO sad & heavy to leave in the film. Supposedly the footage still exists somewhere. It’s a testament to just how incredible John Candy was.
John Candy was a national treasure! 43 is *WAY* too young. Fun fact: they used the actual door from that cab, in the scene where Steve recognizes John.
I saw this movie back in the 80s the day my father died. A family friend took me and my sister's away from the house (over to their house) to get our minds off our tragedy, and we watched this film, waiting for our mom to arrive. I never laughed so hard, yet cried so hard right after. This film holds a special place in my life and my heart. Good review, mates.
“You have a better chance playing pick up sticks with your butt cheeks than getting a flight out of here tonight.” One of the funniest movies ever and one of the greatest holiday films ever.
I’ll never forget watching this for the first time with my brother, and the pair of us laughing ourselves silly at the car going between the two trucks moment...one of the funniest scenes in movie history. And yes, the reveal at the end still tugs at the heart strings. What a great movie ❤️
Timeless classic John Hughes film. Trivia: This movie and She's having a baby starring Kevin Bacon and both movie directed by John Hughes and filming back to back together. That's why Kevin Bacon have a small cameo in this movie.
Two kindhearted gents. Gives me hope that the sort of disastrous context we find ourselves in hasn’t worn away the empathy of the younger gens or caused them to sink into cynicism. Maybe speaks to the power of storytelling that we can remind ourselves what life is all about.
John Candy was such an amazing actor, such strong emoting. That early argument where Steve Martin rips him a new one (the Chatty Cathy line) is so savage, but then Candy's "I like me" bit turns everything around. It's a well written little bit, but John Candy delivers it with such pathos...
yes it was much longer, & we learn that his trunk contains all of his late wive's possessions but it was all cut by John Hughes because it was too sad & the whole crew were all crying
funny thing about the Kevin Bacon race scene: Kevin was filming another movie titled She's Having a Baby, and in it, this same scene appears with Steve Martin on the other side of the street!
Not far off with, "I want a divorce." The wife was originally in the movie more with a subplot where she thought Steve Martin's character was MIA because he was cheating on her. But in the end the Steve Martin/John Candy stuff was strong enough they didn't need that storyline and cut it.
Kevin Bacon is his character he played in another John Hughes movie called “She’s Having a Baby”. It’s actually one of my favorite John Hughes movies. If you haven’t seen it you really need to. Kevin Smith actually did his movie “Jersey Girl” as an homage to it and I love it as well.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a must for Thanksgiving for me. There are a few other Thanksgiving movies I love, such as Addams Family Values, Scent of a Woman, The Ice Storm, and Home for the Holidays. There is also one that is very much like this one called Dutch, and it was written by John Hughes no less...same plot except it's a bratty kid and his Mom's boyfriend trying to get home for Thanksgiving.
National lampoons Vacation - 1983. Absolutely hysterical movie and also a John Hughes film. One of the most iconic and quoted movies ever. It’s the Griswolds first movie. Love to see you guys react to this comedy classic!
I was about 12 . It was bed time for me and I flicked through the 4 TV channels we had in rapid succession before I was sent upstairs. Opening music just kicks in and we both got distracted and just sat and watched it in it's entirety and loved it . It's a fond memory .
"The Out-of-Towners" (1970) starring Oscar winners Sandy Dennis and Jack Lemmon (not for this film, though) has the same premise as "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." "The Out-of-Towners" was written by Neil Simon who was one of the most successful playwrights and screenwriters of the 70s. While the film had critically mixed reviews, Simon won The Writers Guild of America award for Best Comedy Written Directly for the Screen for this film, and it was a box-office success. The film was remade in 1999 starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn.
A fun little trip anecdote: I didn’t have a trip quite this bad, but when I was going to visit Quebec City, Canada in February 2018, my initial flight was delayed for about 5 hours until it was canceled, and I had to go the next day. Things went pretty well, even if my attempts at speaking French didn’t always land. Then, about 12 days into the trip, I planned to go to this park with a waterfall, and took a bus to a nearby stop, where me and a Korean guy both got off. It had begun snowing heavily by then, and there were already feet of snow on the ground. We both individually had used Google Maps, and met at the same spot where the lead us to believe was the road to the entrance. Where it lead us was a field of deep snow, which may have once had a walkway to the park. How deep it was wasn’t entirely apparent, and I, being then little versed in deep snow, tried going through to see how bad it might be. I sank up to my middle and both of us laughing, my fellow lost tourist helped me out. We then decided to team up and try the alternative routes the app offered. These turned up dead ends as well, and I decided to call the park office to sort out where to go after the first time Maps had failed me. We found the place-it’s otherworldly gorgeous, btw, in midwinter. We laughed and parted ways, exploring the park separately. When I left, I got on the bus back, as the sun was setting around 4-5pm. About 10 minutes into the ride, the bus got stuck in the snow, now a falling at storm levels. I walked with the other passengers to the next stop and waited. When a second bus finally came, we got on, and not five more minutes into the ride, the second bus also got stuck in the snow. We all repeated the walking and waiting for the next bus. But the next bus wasn’t the correct number, which I didn’t notice and as I tracked my route on Maps, I found I was getting further away from the route back to my hotel in the city. I got off, deciding to trudge through the snowstorm at night to the nearest cafe where I might wait until the storm was over and call a cab (I’d been wary of ride share apps at that time). I made my way slowly through the blinding storm in this strange suburb of Quebec City, where only a few sidewalks were clear enough to walk through. I was getting cold, tired, and decided it was too far to walk to a cafe. I tried the first door that looked likely-the mailroom/ stairwell entrance area of a duplex apartment. I called my hotel, hoping they might get a cab out to me. They said in that weather, it would take almost an hour. I ended up finally signing up for Uber in these stranger’s stairwell. The driver actually got me back to my hotel and all was temporarily well. A day or two later, I was back at the airport on the flight I’d put off twice because of weather and because Quebec is honestly a lovely place to be. But, of course this didn’t go well. I must’ve seemed suspicious or something, because I was pulled over by Canadian customs, and had to wait and have my luggage searched and answer questions. This cut my window to getting to my flight incredibly close. That’s the end. 😅
Loved the rewatch reaction! Never saw this but it was really entertaining! 😆 I do have to say I love both sweaters because I love both of the movies, but I have to go with Tom's being a little bit better. 🤫 Can't wait for more Christmas movies! 🎄🎅🎁
3 movies I remember being in the theater and a certain scene got me laughing and I couldn’t stop this is one of them the scene between the two trucks when Candy turns into the devil so funny thanks guys
One of my all time favourite films! I miss seeing John Candy in movies he had such an amazing presence on the screen! And John Hughes made manyyyy of my favourite films. Both can do no wrong & as for Steve Martin … I adore him! His older stuff to only murder in the building is just top tier ! So much talent involved in this film on and off the screen 🤗
I just realized that Peter Griffin seems to be based on Griffin's character. The tone of voice, the "what grinds my gears", the family name... that must not be a coincidence :o
What a film! I went to see this at the cinema when it first came out. Absolutely outstanding. One of the best things about this was that I think this was the first time I'd seen Steve Martin play an absolute asshole. The two Martin films I'd recommend if you haven't seen them - The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. The 2nd one needs a bit of homework doing before you watch it though really, otherwise it won't hit the mark at all.
Tom, I agree 100% with what you said at the end: The first time I saw this movie, I didn't see the situation with Del's wife either. Watching it now with 20/20 hindsight it becomes almost obvious. Thanks for making me laugh, guys. Between your reactions and your accents (I'm 'murican) I thoroughly enjoy your channel.
After the end credits, the very last scene is the boss still looking at the pictures, as if he has been mulling them over for days now since their meeting
One of my favorite comedies of all time, and that speech that Candy (an incredible great actor he was!) gives in that motel room and the ending get's me everytime. But then again, I wonder what really happened after the credits, at the family, he probably destroyes Thanksgiving dinner, even the whole house, and then ''Neal'' gets a divorce, loose his kids, job, and ends up living as a sales man, on the road with ''Del''. lol
Not as many cinematic moments but back in December 2000 I was taking a Greyhound (bus) trip to see the girlfriend for Christmas; trip usually took 18 hours but thanks to a snowstorm it took me 46 hours to get there. Got to spend 9 hours in the Milwaukee bus depot, 7 hours in Chicago's and 11 hours in Detroit's because of delays and missed connections. The trip back home wasn't quite as bad but thanks to another snow storm I had to spend 13 hours in the Minneapolis bus depot, which actually sucked the most because Minneapolis is only 50 minutes away from where I lived.
Steve Martin’s collaborations with director Carl Reiner are comedy gold as this was Steve Martin at his zany best. Also love him in THE THREE AMIGOS, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, PARENTHOOD, L.A. STORY, ROXANNE and THE MUPPET MOVIE. I also really like the Christmas movie he did playing the manager of a suicide helpline called MIXED NUTS. His dance with Liev Schreiber in drag is hilarious.
THERE IS MUCH MORE TO THIS FILM WHICH WAS CUT FROM THE FINAL EDIT. Somewhere on youtube there's a video about it. At the end of the original Steve Martin's boss is still sitting in the conference room in New York eating his Thanksgiving dinner all alone and still looking at the advertisement pictures, and much more, lol.
I really think this has quietly been presented like a Christmas movie in the UK for it's entire existence, as a kid I didn't even know what Thanksgiving was I just thought they were going home for Christmas, now the UK Blu-ray cover has Christmas things on it which wasn't on VHS or DVD copies but its all good, it works well at anytime of the year as a great movie. I wonder what the first post credits scene was, I know Airplane had one that predated this film but it could have happened before that even. Edit: Internet tells me it was 'The Silencers' (1966).
Steve Martin was in a lot of good comedies in the 80s and 90s. His first "mature" comedy was *All Of Me* (1984), which was successful at the time, but for some reason has never received a widescreen home release.
There is an extended 3 hour version of PT & A locked in a vault somewhere. Unfortunately it’s unlikely to see the light of day since John Hughe’s passing. Some of the deleted scenes are on RUclips. Great film, watch it every year. Loved your video.
Honestly the motel bathroom in this movie isn't a far stretch from currently sharing my bathroom with my brother, his girlfriend, and my mom. There's always someone's stuff on the floor, sink, towels touching the floor, at least they leave my own towel alone. CAN'T WAIT till I have my own bathroom again in a month or so!
Neil's co-worker, who warns him that he will never make the 6:00 flight, is Ferris Bueller's dad! They are even trying to get home to Chicago where the Ferris movie is set! This is a John Hughes muli-verse!
Since you've seen so many, maybe try some cartoons. Haven't seen anyone do them yet 1964 - Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer 1965 - A Charlie Brown Christmas 1966 - How The Grinch Stole Christmas 1969 - Frosty The Snowman 1970 - Santa Claus is Coming To Town 1974 - Twas The Night Before Christmas
Steve Martin is a great musician as well if you didn't know. In 1978 he had a hit song called "King Tut" that is hilarious. He now plays in a bluegrass band called Steep Canyon Rangers playing the banjo. So, here are a few of my favorite Steve Martin movies: Cheaper By The Dozen 1 & 2 Little Shop Of Horrors - He's not the main character...but he's hilarious in the scenes he's in. Three Amigos The Out Of Towners Housesitter A Simple Twist Of Fate - My #1 Steve Martin movie...it's not what you'd expect from Steve...it's amazing. The Jerk - My #2 fav. All Of Me ~Dawne
Another great Thanksgiving film is Home for the Holidays starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr, directed by Jodie Foster. Highly recommended, it seems most people don’t know about it.
You should watch 1988's Midnight Run with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin its another buddy and or Chase movie from NY to LA Directed by Martin Brest. Who Directed Beverly Hills Cop.
The 2-minute F-word scene is what separated this otherwise wholesome Thanksgiving movie from getting a PG rating. There's an alternative take of the scene made for TV without any swearing but retains the high stress factor. It's really strange to see two different takes of the same scene! Here it is! ruclips.net/video/g0mmXvV_LPM/видео.html
Also, also, another thing that was explained in a scene that had been deleted to save time. The blonde kid who breaks in and robs Dell and Neil was the pizza/beer delivery kid whom Dell stiffed on the tip.
John Candy's one of the few famous people I genuinely miss. He gave so many fond memories, especially to kids and young people, who watched his movies back in the 80s and 90s. Much missed and irreplaceable.
And SCTV of course
From Canada here and yeah he’s a national treasure to us
John Candy and Philip Seymour Hoffman are the top two most-missed actors for me. Both legends!
Him and Robin Williams I would say.
RIP, John Hughes and John Candy for bringing this film to life.
Absolutely.
Steve Martin plays the funniest straight man ever.

I’ve definitely noticed an increase of appreciation for this movie in the last 10 years or so, and I love it.
This movie actually has a post credits scene, no lie!! The boss is still looking at the ads lol
With his Thanksgiving dinner plate at his desk. LOL.
@@claymccoy I don’t remember that part haha. That’s amazing
This film is a national treasure for the Holidays, another John Hughes classic. RIP John Candy, the combo of he & Steve Martin are timeless comedy duo
John Candy was one of the great leading men. He could make the audience laugh and cry in the same film, so great was his sincerity in his roles.
I’ll never forget watching this for the first time with my brother, and the pair of us laughing ourselves silly at the car going between the two trucks moment...one of the funniest scenes in movie history. And yes, the reveal at the end still tugs at the heart strings. What a great movie ❤️
John Candy in JFK is absolutely amazing. He's on screen for like 5 seconds but steals it
So true!
I don’t remember him being in JFK
Donald Sutherland steals JFK in a bit role
Fun Candy fact: John Candy was incredibly nervous about being in JFK, the sweat his character produces was Candy sweating for real
@@gazzalenbrick6381 that I know. But John Candy wasn’t in the movie.

I love all Steve Martin's 80-ties comedy's and this one is his best imo. Also John Candy's best role, he was made for this movie.
I think Martin’s 80s comedies are my favorite!

OMG That Gremlins jersey is absolute gold.
Killer...F***ing...Sweater. PT&A always makes me cry.😭
Gotta say, I grew up with this movie (80as child) and love it, but I thought Due Date was hilarious too! This is more rewatchable though.
For me, this is a must watch every Thanksgiving.
Haven't seen anyone do them yet
1964 - Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
1965 - A Charlie Brown Christmas
1966 - How The Grinch Stole Christmas
1969 - Frosty The Snowman
1970 - Santa Claus is Coming To Town
1974 - Twas The Night Before Christmas
Love love John Candy. Gone way too soon. RIP Candy and Hughes.
Hilarious movie.
I love your guy's reactions, One of the best on youtube. Keep up the good work guys
My favorite Thanksgiving movie is “Home for the Holidays” starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr, directed by Jodie Foster
Three Amigos classic Steve Martin/Martin Short/Chevy Chase. Best sight gag is him trying to get their attn on a wall
Steve Martin is a great musician as well if you didn't know. In 1978 he had a hit song called "King Tut" that is hilarious. He now plays in a bluegrass band called Steep Canyon Rangers playing the banjo.
So, here are a few of my favorite Steve Martin movies:
Cheaper By The Dozen 1 & 2
Little Shop Of Horrors - He's not the main character...but he's hilarious in the scenes he's in.
Three Amigos
The Out Of Towners
Housesitter
A Simple Twist Of Fate - My #1 Steve Martin movie...it's not what you'd expect from Steve...it's amazing.
The Jerk - My #2 fav.
All Of Me
~Dawne
Nobody ever says anything about the fact that they are stopped by the legend that is David St Hubbins playing a great cameo. 😉
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin is also worth a watch.
"Home for the Holidays" starring Holly Hunter, Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr. is a Thanksgiving film.
There was a lot left out of the final cut, there's a great summary on RUclips called the "lost version" which is definitely worth a look.
"Grumpy Old Men" If you have not reacted to that movie. As a Minnesotan I would love a reaction to that film. It's a great winter movie.
Three Amigos: Steve Martin + Martin Short + Chevy Chase, Director by John Landis! Good stuff!
Another great Thanksgiving film is Home for the Holidays starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr, directed by Jodie Foster. Highly recommended, it seems most people don’t know about it.
12:12 best reaction I've seen to this yet! LMAO
Candy & Martin = Comedy Gold
Another John Hughes post- credit scene is at the end of "Ferris Buehler."
Great film, hilarious w a great little twist, with one ofvthe best heartwarming scenes.
The Great Outdoors is one of my favourite John candy films. Also, Dan ackroyds character is amazing. Recommend watching if you haven’t!
You should watch 1988's Midnight Run with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin its another buddy and or Chase movie from NY to LA Directed by Martin Brest. Who Directed Beverly Hills Cop.
Fun fact. I once threw a lit cigarette out my car window while driving & it blew back in & set fire to my friend in the back.
John Hughes also did the whole twist thing before M. Night.
Always thought Dell's wife was going to be in the trunk he lugs around.
John Candy is a genius
Yes
If John Candy is in it then it qualifies as a chrimbo movie, just for the feels alone. Salute to you JC.
RIP the Hanks-candy duo🥺
tom i love your sweater. my oldest daughter loves the gremlin movies. i love john candy movies and steve martin movies
0:09 Merry Christmas everybody
Also, also, another thing that was explained in a scene that had been deleted to save time. The blonde kid who breaks in and robs Dell and Neil was the pizza/beer delivery kid whom Dell stiffed on the tip.
