    It's important to remember that when this came out, Chucky wasn't really in the advertising. They made it look like Andy was the one doing the killing. Chucky being the killer is such a well known twist that its not even a twist anymore.
    Also, a lot of Chucky's scenes were an actor in a costume shot on oversized sets to sell him being a doll. And they look INCREDIBLE.

      What about the Voodoo doll from Trilogy of Terror?

  • @eliroth9978
    @eliroth9978 2 года назад +171

    This franchise is the rare example of where the two creators stay with it up to present day. Writer Don Mancini had just graduated college when producer David Kirchner found it and turned it into a movie. Since then, Macini has written every entry and directed every film since the fifth entry and Kirchner has been either a producer or executive producer the whole time. It's for this reason that the Chucky franchise is often considered the most consistent horror franchise as not only are they still the main people behind it, but Mancini is adamant that they're also able to experiment with it and keep trying new things.
    EDIT: Also fun fact, when recording the scene where Chucky burns to death, Brad Dourif's daughter Fiona walked in without him noticing and he terrified her.

    • @WrestlingSmarks
      @WrestlingSmarks 2 года назад +3

      It depends on what you mean by creator, because I'd say Tom Holland is just as responsible for the first one as he rewrote it to include the voodoo and serial killer backstory.

    • @eliroth9978
      @eliroth9978 2 года назад +8

      That's actually not entirely true. David Kirschner was the one who developed the idea of the doll being a serial killer because he believed the original concept made Andy too unsympathetic. Co-writer John Lafia was then the one who integrated the new origin into the movie. Tom Holland only came up with the Voodoo mythology. To quote John Lafia "I think the biggest contribution I made was to give the character a back story so it was a human who somehow became a doll. In my draft, it became Charles Lee Ray. I coined the name Chucky."

    • @WrestlingSmarks
      @WrestlingSmarks 2 года назад

      @@eliroth9978 I guess it now depends on who you believe because Tom Holland takes direct credit for both the voodoo and the serial killer backstory.
      When asked how he came to the film he said: "A producer came to me with it. He had a deal at United Artists. It was like an episode of The Twilight Zone. It was originally called ‘Blood Buddies.’ The little boy made the doll a blood buddy and whenever he fell asleep, the doll got up and killed the people he didn’t like, including a teacher and a dentist. I sympathised, but it wasn’t a movie. There was no one to root for and it wasn’t scary. It all started to come into place when I created the serial killer Charles Lee Ray and had him transfer his soul into the doll. The drive of the piece comes from Charles/Chucky’s desire to avenge himself on his accomplice who left him to be arrested in the opening chase. The second beat of that motivation was Ray finding out if he didn’t get his soul out of the doll in time, he would be trapped there forever."
      Considering how integral the voodoo is to that whole backstory, I think I side with Tom on this one.
      Still, Lafia didn't stay on with the whole series, either, so I think my original point still stands. The original creators didn't all stick around for the sequels. Lafia only did part 2 after this one, so I can kind of see it, because the quality dips after both he and Tom Holland exit the franchise, in my opinion, of course.

    • @eliroth9978
      @eliroth9978 2 года назад +3

      Tom Holland did have ideas for the character of Chucky, but a lot of them didn't end up in the final film. During production Holland constantly clashed with Kirschner and when his two hour cut of the movie performed negatively with test audiences he left the project altogether. Kirschner then brought Mancini into the editing room and they worked on bringing the movie down to 87 minutes.
      Also Holland's claim doesn't make much sense. As he himself admitted, when first offered the project he was unsure of what changes to make to Mancini's script and as a result he temporarily left the project. It was then that Lafia was brought onto the project by Kirschner and was the first to rewrite the script, which he did twice before Holland returned to the project with ideas of what to do with the script. On top of that, Holland isn't a very reliable person. He's claimed that Child's Play was essentially an original screenplay despite Mancini stating half of his original draft ended up in the final cut. In fact, Mancini almost didn't get the story credit in the film (which is a whole other thing)
      Yes Lafia didn't work on any movie after the first one, but things he changed with the script were mostly from producer David Kirschner who's not only a producer who started the franchise and still works on it, but even created Chucky's design straight from Mancini's description. He just wasn't a writer at the time so he brought in Lafia to do the rewrites for him. Hence why I consider Kirschner the person most responsible for Chucky's creation.
      Hell even past that, Don Mancini has stated that John Lafia had similar ideas for the direction of the franchise that he did as neither had much interest in the Voodoo mythology. There's a reason Mancini's influence is more obvious in the sequel despite Lafia being the director. And personally I like pretty much the whole franchise since then. The only film I wasn't huge on was Child's Play 3 which Mancini has admitted is due to his rushed script having only a few months to write the whole thing.

    lol these guys are funny. The blond guy genuinely looked creeped out, where the dude with the brown hair looked more shocked and amused by Chucky haha. As an 80's kid he terrified me initially so I had to take a break when he came alive, then took a break and watched the rest from the next room peeking behind a wall lol. Then once the second movie came out I was obsessed with Chucky. Now I have some Chucky stuff, a few Good Guy Chucky dolls, some figures, merc etc.

    Child's play is such a fun horror movie.
    Kudos for Brad Dourriff, he made Chucky really awesome.
    Also kudos to the special effect team.
    A walking, killing doll should look silly and it's near impossible to find that remotely scary, but the team succeeded and that's a big thumbs up for them.

    The doll designers actually had to create some of the animatronics that never existed before. Chucky the doll was probably one of the most complicated robots to ever exist in a movie up until that point. Thats probably why it still holds up somewhat in 2021.

    Part 2 scared me more. Where watching this was like "Wow, how did they do that?" And I was a kid when I saw both. But 2 was the one that gave me nightmares. This was more a story with horror elements, where as 2 was a straight up Horror.

    I saw this film at a screening at UCLA before it was released, and before there was advertising. The director, Tom Holland, followed up the screening with a Q & A. It was the perfect way to see it. I thought we were going to get a "Talking Tina" kind of thing (see the old Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll") where the doll might say spooky stuff, and move to a different location when not on camera. So when we saw Chucky actually "come alive" when threatened with a trip to the fireplace, we all freaked out. It was awesome.

    Child’s Play 2 & 3, and Bride of Chucky are worth watching.
    My favorite one my whole life has always been part 2, so definitely watch that one, but 3 and Bride are worth it too, at least to know in which direction the franchise goes,
    after that quality of story and practical effects dropped dramatically.
    It also helps that the Child’s Play franchise is Don Mancini’s Baby, and he was at the helm for all but the remake; so that adds a little extra continuity...
    So to reiterate, the first 4 movies are worth watching, in my opinion.

    It's a really top-notch horror film, especially innovative for its time. Now Chucky is mainly comedic and satirical, but fascinating to go back and see that he was legitimately threatening in the original. The whole series is super entertaining, especially "Bride of Chucky" and "Curse of Chucky", and as others have noted, the continuity in character and plot to this day is commendable.

    The thing about Chucky is that Charles Lee Ray (serial killer with a penchant for Voodoo, whose name I love to say) was still alive when he transfered his soul to it. Problem is that the doll was only meant to be a temporary vessel, until he can find a new human host. The longer he stays in the doll the more human the doll becomes but it will always be a doll so his soul could be trapped forever within it. The original is a classic, but the 2nd one is the best of the horror Child's Play has to offer. No. 3 develops more of the story with many more kills, and then Bride of Chucky was IMHO the last GOOD sequel. Jennifer Tilly plays TIffany! After that it just got ridiculous. The franchise however, just would not be the same without Brad Dourif.

    Yes, my all time favorite horror franchise! Child's Play 2 and 3 are more slasher-y and there's not as much suspense as in this one. Bride of Chucky (1998) & Seed of Chucky (2004) are just straight out horror comedies, the latter one being easily the most absurd entry in the whole franchise. Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017) on the other hand dive back into a bit darker horror. I'm a bit biased but I'd say you should *definitely* check out rest of the series, it's hell of a ride. Most people say Child's Play 2 is the best one but I've always loved the original the most so I'm really happy to hear you liked it!

    Fun trivia for anyone who has seen the Tales from the Crypt series from the 90s: The Cryptkeeper doll was made by the same people who made the Chucky doll, and they actually removed the eyes from the burnt up Chucky and reused them for the Cryptkeeper. So the Cryptkeeper has Chucky's eyes.

    "Good Guys" was inspired by "My Buddy," which was a doll geared towards young boys in the 1980s. What I loved about Catherine Hicks, who played Andy's mother, she went on to star for several years on the family-oriented "7th Heaven." 7 is a solid rating for the first Child's Play. Great acting, great practical effects, I've always been haunted by the voodoo kill. Catherine Hicks was basically the TV mother of the 80's and she does a good job filling that role here. Alex Vincent as Andy is just cute enough not to be completely annoying, and just annoying enough not to be cutely annoying. Brad Dourif carries the franchise in later movies and definitely did a good job here. If I have one complaint it's that there was potential and even hints at Andy being responsible for the kills instead of a sentient doll, but once you see the opening toy store soul transference scene, all of that just becomes window dressing and goes out the door. This definitely isn't the first killer doll in pop culture. There were at least three in the original Twilight Zone run (Talking Tina being the most like Chucky, and a couple of mob boss ventriloquist dummies that sport similar sleaze ball attitudes), and a not-so-good 60's film called "Devil Doll". Still, Chucky's the most memorable.
