This is one of the few movies where seeing the monster is more terrifying than your imagination. When pinhead says year your soul apart with the bright light, it kept me up for an entire night. The second movie was scarier to me.
Saw this premier on Halloween night, presented by Clive Barker himself at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto. Barker arrived late and ran down the isle with the film cannister in hand and disappeared through the curtains before it began!
Something that set this movie apart from pretty much everything coming out of Hollywood at the time was the fact that the Cenobites (Pinhead in particular) were far more 'intellectual' than other movie monsters, who all tended to follow one of two formulas: they were either wisecracking smartasses like Freddy Krüeger for example, or mute killing machines like Jason Vorhees. As a matter of fact the production company wanted Barker to make Pinhead more like Freddy Krüeger, but he absolutely refused. Another thing perhaps is the fact that Frank and Julia were the real antagonists, rather than the Cenobites filling that function - which likely had been the case if Hollywood had their way. Sadly they did from the third movie onwards... Hellraiser 5 through 8 weren't actually Hellraiser movies originally. The studio simply acquired some scripts for cheap and rewrote them to include Pinhead. They had to produce a Hellraiser movie every few years in order to keep the license. The 9th movie was written specifically for that purpose. They outright told the director and script writer that they didn't care about the quality of the movie as long as they had something they could release before the deadline, and they shot that crapfest in just a couple of weeks iirc. It's some of the worst crap I've seen, so bad that I haven't bothered to watch the 10th movie, despite hearing that it's relatively decent.
Agreed Pinhead in this one an the .2nd one an in Hellraiser judgement he is just doing his job. There are rules he just enforces them . If one finds their way to hell because. They are drown there that's whare they stay.
I personally think 5 is underrated, from what I remember Pinhead was back to being like in the first 2 and wasn’t an outright villain, just doing his job as a hellpriest
Cinema Rules the movie is so gross. Guys on a channel called WeWatchedAMovie reckon the movie really stains you & you feel like you need a bath afterwards. They love horror movies.
Brad Lanky it’s a very gory movie with cool and unique concepts that I haven’t really seen in a horror movie before, we’ll definitely check that channel out 😁
Thank you for reacting to this one! I saw this back in 1988, when I was 14 years old. It is one of my absolute favourite horror movies ever - mostly because it is so unyielding! Almost every horror movie has lighthearted moments, or a funny line here or there, to ease up the tension... But Hellraiser does not. It is just pitch f**king black throughout! And, as you pointed out yourselves, the special fx makeup, that today in 2020 is 33 years old, is incredible!!
I love watching the younger generation reacting to the great movies I enjoyed in my youth. I'd recommend Hellraiser 2 and 3 as well, but stop after that. The other five movies just aren't that good.
Clive barker was/is an author, he sold the rights to one of his books and he said they sort of used about 7 lines, (transmutation/underworld). he was pissed off so he decided to direct hellraiser himself, the first and second are almost direct sequels following on from each other.
Right? I pride myself on not being scared of horror movies, but during this one, I had an urge to hide under my blankets like a little child. Especially everytime the "Chatterer" cenobite with the barred teeth was on screen. He was so disgusting and terrifying. Or that scene where Kirsty first opens the hallway and is chased by that THING, whatever the hell it was... I'm scared of teeth, you know. So this movie was a trip. 😂
I would suggest Poltergeist, The Shining, Alien. Those three are absolute horror classics, in my opinion. Hellraiser 2 is pretty good, 3 is alright, the rest are debatably bad

Great video! So glad I found it. Sixteen-year-old me snuck into _Hellraiser_ on opening night back in '87. The audience - myself included - were utterly blown away by the imagery and violence. There really was nothing like it at the time. Literally, when the credits rolled, you could hear fifty people *finally* let out their held breath, all at once.
Jeez, these are the movies from my childhood, good times. I was always a bit of a freak my Dad was a horror movie fan so I saw films like Evil Dead & The Burning both which got banned for a time when I was like 9 years old! I was 13 when I watched Hellraiser, I remember I even had a replica puzzle box🤣
Armageddon2077 we hope to re-visit this series, however our first 10 reactions will be of other horror films, want to cover as much ground as we can before revisiting Hellraiser or nightmare on elm street or the Halloween series 😊
If you're going to watch Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii, make sure you see the unrated version. The R-rated version is heaviiy cut. Part 1 and Part 2 (mostly) are Britisch. They fit together very well. With part 3 the series became weaker step by step (and Ameeican). Btw, Ashley Laurence was 17 filming Hellraiser. And Christopher Young's score ist epic.
Clive Barker (born 5 October 1952) is an English playwright, novelist, film director, and visual artist. Barker came to prominence in the mid-1980s with a series of short stories, the Books of Blood, which established him as a leading horror writer. He has since written many novels and other works, and his fiction has been adapted into films, notably the Hellraiser and Candyman series.
I just finished it and it was good but it was like a 180 from his other novels like the books of blood and scarlet gospels. Lol it was all bright and shinny lol to me at least
So I’ve been meaning to watch this reaction for so long, I have seen all of your guys recent reactions. But, this one… your guys speechless moments and overall main reactions for this film was everything. Simply for the fact that I had the exact same reaction myself when I first watched it either the end of last year or start of this year. I’m going to check out the reaction to Hellraiser 2 right now. Extremely awesome reactions guys, thank you. ☺️
Saw this movie in theatre at the time of its release on a whim, as there was not much promotion around it, so had no idea what to expect and it blew my mind. Especially the design of Cenobytes.
Really, best reaction ever hahahaha. Your speechless faces are exactly what Hellraiser caused on me when I wacthed it for the first time, with the gore and wtf moments. That's why I love it, it's so original, the make up is beast and it stands out from other horror movies from that era. I went to see the house in London in 2018, it's still there!
Great reaction! I also suggest the following: The Exorcist, The Omen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Terminator (technically it's scifi action but has alot of horror tropes in it), Predator, Alien, Aliens, Poltergeist, Carrie, Cujo, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Child's Play, Gremlins, The Thing... Man I watched way too many horror movies growing up. Kinda explains alot 🤪
Frank's resurrection is hands down one of the best (and my favorite) practical effects pieces ever. EDIT: The same cannot be said for The Engineer (the inverted salamander thing that chased her down the hallway).
Loved both of your faces there at the end where you were just trying to process what you'd just watched as the credits rolled, priceless !!! HellRaiser has a special place in my love of horror and my only claim to fame, the actor who played the female Cenobite, Grace Kirby, was my Performing Arts tutor back in my college days !!
Every once in a while I remember this movie; it was the first scary movie with kids that was unrelentingly terrorizing. I may get flack for this, but the Troll movie was pretty brutal as well.
After that movie, you fellas could use a laugh. Watch yourselves Young Frankenstein and you'll get that laugh. But for ones a little more balanced into the horror genre, An American Werewolf In London, and Gremlins, are fun watches.
The second one goes more into Pinhead's history. He was a British captain who served in WW1 and found himself traumatized at the things he and his countrymen were forced to do to people in their attempt to win the war. He traveled abroad afterward, wandering about aimlessly searching for ways in which to bury his trauma until at last he came upon the box.
First off-SORRY I WROTE SO MUCH. But Hellraiser is of my all time favorite films (like the Exorcist, I also watched this movie alone the first time I ever saw it. I was 11; YEP. My cousin had the VHS tape and I watched it over there alone in his room-without my parents knowledge 😂 and it terrified me. That resurrection scene using practical effects was truly incredible, original and revolutionary in its time. There was nothing remotely like it when this came out. It was extremely scary in its time. And this film at its core is a depraved, super horrific version of extreme S&M, mixed with murder, monsters from hell (they are actually called cenobites. And the lead guy is Pinhead-he’s a legendary character now but not then-then he was an underground character that belonged to us the fans), lots of blood and the concept that in hell, pain is the only pleasure. And sometimes hell comes looking for you to tear your soul apart. So be weary of boxes with puzzles🤣This film also gives me a lot of feels of nostalgia-my friends and I all knew the lines from this one and the second one, as well as Evil Dead 1,2 and 3 (because they have incredible, endlessly quotable dialogue that is a fun as hell to say) and we’d interject them (the Jesus Wept line was everything😂) at appropriate -and inappropriate 😉- moments and no one other than our circle would know what we were talking about, and it was like our secret knowledge-kind of like people who quote Star Wars to each other... but way cooler😂 and way more obscure. Hellraiser is based on a novella by one of my all time favorite authors, the legendary Clive Barker. Clive Barker in my opinion is one of, if not thee, greatest, most original, imaginative, incredibly detailed and brilliant fantasy horror writers of all time. If you’ve never read his novels and story collections, you’ve been missing out big time. Check out the Books Of Blood Vol. 1&2, Imajica, and The Great And Secret Show, and go from there. Hellraiser is based on Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart”. But he’s written a lot of novels and collections. He’s a very prolific writer. As well as being an incredible artist that does his own illustrations in his novels, anthologies and short stories. I love Stephen King’s novels as you do, and King is a master in his own right. But Clive Barker is truly on a whole other level. I’ve yet to find a horror writer his equal. Once one reads his works, he becomes the gold standard horror author all others are held up to 😉 start by reading The Books Of Blood. And be prepared to be blown away. One note- the cenobites and the box didn’t take you to either heaven or hell. The box didn’t open heaven at all. The premise is that for some people, hell and pain IS THEIR HEAVEN. Seekers of pain for pleasure, for those who can’t get enough on earth and want to go further, have the ultimate pleasure. But then, they take your soul and torture you forever. Until there is no pleasure left, only the pain. Which was more than Frank bargained for. This movie and its premise is original and unexpected, it pushes boundaries (even today) as it touches on a lot of taboo themes and subjects with total abandon. Remember- this is 1987! This movie is decades ahead of its time. That’s a credit to the genius of Clive Barker. He finds the beauty in the horrific. He finds the art in the macabre. There is a kind of elevated poetry to his written works, where he uses elegant language and beautiful prose to describe horrific things. And he always finds the beauty in the monsters and the horror in mankind. He’s brilliant. He touches on themes no one else would touch. And no one in the genre is as original as he is. So, if you take anything from this movie, it should be IF YOU SEE A METAL PUZZLE BOX, LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE 😂
In 1985 Stephen King said Clive Barker was “the future of horror.” I saw Hellraiser when it came out in theaters. A group of us drove from our little remote Indian reservation to the city to see it - had to stay in a momo. Nobody slept that night!
Yes! Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser are my two favorite horror movies of all times. Clive Barker, the director of Hellraiser wrote the book it is based on called "The Hellbound Heart". He is a brilliant horror writer and a very talented painter too. And he also wrote Candyman, another horror gem I hope you watch soon. I love your reactions by the way. You guys are so fun and nice and friendly. I'm enjoying your videos so much.
You guys are pretty much my age and are watching these horror movies for the first time and I basically grew up watching all of them. Im pretty sure that what's wrong with me now 😂 but I am glad you are taking the time to watch them and filming your reactions. These are truly classics and legends in horror.
Your reactions are awesome - this was super entertaining to watch! You do have to do Hellraiser 2 as well though, as the first 2 are a set and follow on from each other (the rest can safely be ignored).
I was about 12 when I saw this movie for the first time, 28 years ago and have loved this and the first sequel (don’t watch III and beyond) ever since. Another great reaction video. At times I’m a bit envious you’re getting to enjoy this classics for first time been a while for me since I saw a classic for the first time.
I grew up watching and enjoying late 70’s/80’s horror and watched this film a year after it was released at 11 years old and it was the only movie that actually scared the shit out of me!! Bravo 👏
I was about the same age. This franchise along with with the first Nightmare on Elm Street and Dreamscape scared me so much I was scared to go to sleep.
Really like the channel, if you haven't seen it you should check out The Fly, In the Mouth of Madness, Jacob's Ladder, Angel Heart, The Fog, and The Exorcist (the theatrical version not the extended re-release)
This movie is one of the main reasons why my father hates horror movies. He was never a big fan of them but he would still watch them with us. When he saw this movie his exact words were "Normal people do not make movies like this." I love Clive Barker and Doug Bradley is the only Pinhead for me. Did you know there is a first-person shooter, horror survival video game designed by Clive Barker? It is called "Jericho" and it was one of my favorite horror experiences. Nothing special to write home about just classic Clive Barker horror and suspense.
You guys should try the George Romero zombie trilogy. Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), and Day of the Dead (1985). They're the birth of the modern zombie genre.. and Night is public domain.. though you might wanna look for a remastered version.. since a lot of copies floating around are pretty banged up.
One more thing.. if you ever do "Night of..." stay faaaaaaar away from the 30th anniversary "extended" version.. someone shot new material for it on a camcorder and edited it into the movie.. and it blows. That also goes for any colorized versions.. this is the version you want ruclips.net/video/_d68kyNY0jI/видео.html

Wow, I can't believe someone did a reaction to Hellraiser! It's one of my all-time favorite horror films, but never gained the popularity of some of its contemporaries. This is my first visit to your channel (thanks to the youtube algorithm, I suppose). I'll have to go watch your Nightmare on Elm Street reaction, as that's another of my favorites. I hope you decide to come back and do Hellraiser 2, which IMO was just as good as this one, and has more of the Cenobites (the demons, led by Pinhead) in it. Though you should stop at that point, it's really not worth watching any of the rest after that. I haven't looked to see what else is on your channel yet, so forgive me if this is already done, but if not, a very underrated film from the same era that's worth giving a look is Phantasm.
Oh man. I've loved Pinhead since I actually walked in the wrong theater my senior year when this came out. I think we were planning on seeing some comedy and I'm glad we made a mistake. Still my favorite horror movie ever and love watching people see it for the first time.
This is such a horror classic and I loved your reaction xD I watched it with my sister when I was 10 and she was 12. We watched it and afterwards were like "Okay, there's a sequel, right? Let's keep going!" Needless to say we've always been horror fans! Also, I love Kirsty, but it's always bothered the heck out of me that she didn't notice anything off about her "dad" for so long. Not the blood, not the fact that his eye colour was no longer blue, not his personality. Like, Kirsty, do you even know your dad? xD
Highly recommend the Peter Jackson classic, Dead Alive ! after you watch Hellraiser 2 of course, if you thought Hellraiser 1 was crazy.... holy crap....

Yeah like... Pinhead is scary for sure but he wasn't a villain. He was just doing his job
Agreed Pinhead in this one an the .2nd one an in Hellraiser judgement he is just doing his job. There are rules he just enforces them . If one finds their way to hell because. They are drown there that's whare they stay.
The last one is surprisingly good, definitely worth a watch
Actually Judgement wasn't that bad. It easily was better than Revelations.
I personally think 5 is underrated, from what I remember Pinhead was back to being like in the first 2 and wasn’t an outright villain, just doing his job as a hellpriest
Reacting to Hellraiser is ballsy.
Brad Lanky haha why do you say that? 😜
Frank saying come to daddy wasn’t meant to be lighthearted and funny but it was fuckin hilarious 😂😂😂
I love watching the younger generation reacting to the great movies I enjoyed in my youth. I'd recommend Hellraiser 2 and 3 as well, but stop after that. The other five movies just aren't that good.
Big facts
Clive barker was/is an author, he sold the rights to one of his books and he said they sort of used about 7 lines, (transmutation/underworld). he was pissed off so he decided to direct hellraiser himself, the first and second are almost direct sequels following on from each other.
Candyman and The Thing next? And American Werewolf in London. and The Howling.
Lee Lorenz we will try our best to get around to those movies people have recommended, however we still have some great videos coming up 😁😁
Ooh, yes, Candyman!
Agreed. Top horror must see films 👍🎬
Very nice choices 👍🏾
yes!!!
And people think Paranormal Activity is scary. Ha ... ha ..hahahahahahaha!
The silence at the end was hilarious. Catching up on the old school horror... love it. I have such sights to show you! Oooohhhh
When I saw this for the first time in the theater in 1987, I couldn't sleep for a week!! It pushed horror into a new...dimension.
this is one of my fav films ever hellraiser 2 is arguably almost as good if not better..
I would suggest Poltergeist, The Shining, Alien. Those three are absolute horror classics, in my opinion.
Hellraiser 2 is pretty good, 3 is alright, the rest are debatably bad
That's not just an opinion that's a fact
Poltergeist is my favorite of them all. The sequels all suck but the original only gets better the more you watch it.
2 is great yeah, 3 is unwatchable, 4 could have been good if it was not of the studio meddling who ruined it.
@@oliviawilliams6204 3 had the memorable scene with pinhead in the church.
@@willhuey4891 a scene don't save a movie.... kinda like an episode don't save a season *stare at people GoT later season with Hardhome and the Battle of the Bastard
Clive Barker is an amazing artist... painter, sculptor, writer. His work is quite dark/gothic in esthetic. Beautiful work
John carpenter "The Thing"
muito bom
Jeez, these are the movies from my childhood, good times. I was always a bit of a freak my Dad was a horror movie fan so I saw films like Evil Dead & The Burning both which got banned for a time when I was like 9 years old! I was 13 when I watched Hellraiser, I remember I even had a replica puzzle box🤣
You guys gotta do Hellraiser 2. Love this channel.
The original Fright Night would be a good one too. Cheers.
Yayyy Fright Night part 1 and 2, one of the best vamp movie of all time along with Lost Boys.
Definitely watch the 2nd hellraiser. The lore is far more expansive and explains sooooo much more.
Please react to the sequel 'Hellbound: Hellraiser II' next!
Yes by far Hellraiser 2 is Superior in every fashion.
Hellraiser II is better and then you should stop there.
@@gabrieltorres2882 The Doctor.. is in!
Clive Barker is a great writer. His novel "Weave world" was vert interesting.
@ Darren MAC..Weaveworld should be given the full Netflix series treatment
@@simonwild428 That could be amazing.
I just finished it and it was good but it was like a 180 from his other novels like the books of blood and scarlet gospels. Lol it was all bright and shinny lol to me at least
Your faces when Frank is all chained and hooked up at the end say more than words ever could. Love the channel guys
Me as well! Still the freakiest Ive seen, way back in the 80s theater. Holy hell I had my jaw on the floor.
I really love this movie. One of the most underrated movies ever.
Another Gorey one from the 80s. Mix of serious and comedy. H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator. You should also like this one.
Michael Waskelis was recommended that movie from a family member, looks pretty cool tbf
The triumphant music playing makes it so dissonant in this horrible way too. Great framing
You guys should watch "The Gate" rekeased the same year it had impressive visual effects for its time.
Agreed. The Gate is fun.
Every once in a while I remember this movie; it was the first scary movie with kids that was unrelentingly terrorizing. I may get flack for this, but the Troll movie was pretty brutal as well.
I like the way you guys edited this. The plot actually of this batshit crazy movie actually made sense.
After that movie, you fellas could use a laugh. Watch yourselves Young Frankenstein and you'll get that laugh.
But for ones a little more balanced into the horror genre, An American Werewolf In London, and Gremlins, are fun watches.
“Jesus Wept” one of the most hardcore lines in horror history
Check out The Hitcher movie from the 80s you'll like it.
So, if you take anything from this movie, it should be IF YOU SEE A METAL PUZZLE BOX, LEAVE IT THE HELL
ALONE 😂
Books of blood was a pretty good movie!
In 1985 Stephen King said Clive Barker was “the future of horror.” I saw Hellraiser when it came out in theaters. A group of us drove from our little remote Indian reservation to the city to see it - had to stay in a momo. Nobody slept that night!
The best part of your videos are both of your facial reactions, they crack me up! Keep up the videos!
Please react to Brain Dead by Peter Jackson ("Dead Alive" in America)
MrJayO1986 we’ve been recommended this movie a couple of times now, it’s definitely on our radar 😊
@@CinemaRules I agree with MR. JayO1986, Dead/Alive was advertised as the goriest film ever made when it first came out..
@@CinemaRules FYI Just letting you its more of comedy/horror, with the focus more on the comedy.
Oh god yes, please.
This one is bonkers nuts. Peter Jackson is insane. :D In a good way.
You guys are pretty much my age and are watching these horror movies for the first time and I basically grew up watching all of them. Im pretty sure that what's wrong with me now 😂 but I am glad you are taking the time to watch them and filming your reactions. These are truly classics and legends in horror.
Aside from the unpardonable sin of turning Hellraiser into a comedy, this was a spectacular reaction! :D
Your reactions are awesome - this was super entertaining to watch! You do have to do Hellraiser 2 as well though, as the first 2 are a set and follow on from each other (the rest can safely be ignored).
Little detail on the side: Old daddy here in this movie is a certain Cardassian spy disguised as a human... ;)
The actor also played the bad guy in dirty Harry.
Watched it as a kid... Its stillin my head after 20 years... :D
you guys should check out Jacob's Ladder (1990 version, not the crappy remake).
I'm loving the movie choices and the reactions. Keep it up guys.
In 1990, my young mind could not handle Jacob's ladder. It's like a bad trip. Real bad! 🤣
Definitely Jacobs ladder and in the mouth of madness.
Jacob's Ladder is a classic
The Fly for sure!
Hellraiser is the real shit, pure uncut 80's horror.
I remember seeing this movie back in the day. It was shocking and suspenseful. The Cenobites freaked me out.
I think out of all the 80’s horror films. Hellraiser had my favorite score.
This was such a unique movie, I was pulled into the story, right from the start.
This is very well made guys! One of my favorite films, and your reactions had me laughing like a crazy person. Well done!
Watch "The Thing" it has amazing practical effects.
Hell raiser is one of my favorite classic horror films. I love how it’s not a generic in your face horror. It’s shocking! Thanks for doing this guys! Can’t wait to see what else this channel does in the future !
The husband character is the same actor as the villain in "Dirty Harry".
I'm wondering if Barker watched the scene in that film where Scorpio gets a guy to beat him up. Seems sado-masochistic.
I'll kill all your mothers..lol..or that bit where he is making the kids on the bus sing Row your boat always makes me laugh..
_Hellraiser: Where Scorpio Was the Sane One_
Oh man, the dad played Elim Garak in Star Trek Deep Space Nine one of my favorite characters in the franchise.
I so want a lament configuration puzzle box as an ornament.
These guys are English i think and if so then its called Brain dead over here in England,,still though great suggestion as that movie is just over the top gory..lol..
“She likes her bald men” was the funniest observation of the reaction. And yes, Ashley Lawrence is ridiculously cute.
You need to watch Hellraiser 2 as it follows on from this one.
Andrew Robinson who played Larry (Kirstie's dad) in the film also was the Scorpio Killer in the first Dirty Harry Movie. Also a franchise you should consider covering.
0:55 -- Clive Barker's a Brit. Just FYI. Born and raised in Liverpool.
Remembered some of these makeup are pre-CGI with some of the best makeup artists in the business at that time worked on this movie. That Puzzled Box can be known as Pandora's Box too. As you seen here, when it opens, it also opens access to Hell.
Of course ALL OF IT is pre-CGI.
Ashley Laurence is 54, and ageless.
She drank of the same youth potion of Ralph Machio. LOL
one of my favorite movies , sadly not many people know about this movie and the ones that do some havent even finish watching it. its a classic for me a true original classic horror movie.
Edit: event horizon also one of my top favorite horror movies, also an original also a classic horror movie.
Andy Robinson is the Scorpio killer in Dirty Harry. In the book the house is in Liverpool but it was Americanised to sell better there.
Fantastic reaction, few words, i love to see the reaction by the faces
One to really blow you're minds .... "The Human Centipede"
yep it doesn't get any crazier than that
You guys facial expressions are priceless and your enthusiasm is contagious, it makes me wish your videos were longer. Another stellar reaction......good job👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏. I'm gonna throw in another bid for BASKET CASE 1982.
