Why didn't you shoot in the iPhones portrait mode? It would be a better side by side with the Sony

    • @timminsproductions3481

Because portrait mode is inaccurate and always leaves stitch marks around the subject, especially hair. This can’t be happening with pro photography.

    • @MilosPaprica

It’s a feature to simulate a pro camera. So wouldn’t that be a better comparison to show fake vs really bokeh. If you really wanted to test the iPhone camera vs a real camera then the Sony should of been in full auto mode. Let the Sony camera make all the choices just like the native camera app on the iPhone does. We all know phone cameras will never be a “real” camera so whatever arguments you’re gonna make, stop! The whole point of videos like this is to showcase what a phone is capable of.

@@suleymanaliev312 I agree that if people are JUST looking for a good camera on a phone and don’t care what else the iPhone offers, then they can look somewhere else.
But for someone like me, debating whether or not to upgrade because I like what the iPhone offers and because it would be great to have all that plus having the convenience of an iPhone camera that can simulate a picture close to a professional feel, would be winning for my personal needs and wants.
With that being said, I don’t blame her for not showing the portrait mode because her fav food place was on her mind lol.

@@ne0tic another absolutely false statement. Any phone running android from 2018 and newer is basicially on par or superior to the Iphone depending on camera setup as gcam is now running on borderline all android phones. Potrait is still awful on gcam and Iphone but there are few phones out there such as the Huawei P40/ Mate 40, Oppo find x2 and Oneplus 8 pro which do a much better job than iphone does simply due to much superior hardware, it's still imperfect even on monster camera phones like the huawei's. So making potrait mode comparisons is just silly because they are still so flawed.

Ok for those asking about portrait mode. I get it. But portrait mode uses software to create a fake bokeh effect that would normally be created by a lens’ aperture. It basically finds the subject and blurs out the background. Comparing a7siii photos with iPhones portrait mode would only let us see how good the software does to get the effect. You can achieve “portrait mode” effect in photoshop or even apps. Just a thought. I think they were going for a camera to camera comparison, and this was 100% the best way to do it.

The way you put those two camera systems up against each other is just a waste of time as those „results“ were more than predictable.

Two tips from someone who’s pretty good at squeezing everything out of an iPhone camera. Shoot either portrait mode in the stock camera app, or use the depth mode with halide (a paid manual camera app that is perfect for getting great photos out of the phone). Second, use the app Focos to edit your depth or field. It uses depth data from the photo to get realistic bokeh. You can even adjust what’s in and out of focus in post which is kinda sorcery but it works well and can really save you. The thing you have to keep in mind when it comes to iPhone photography is third-party apps will always help you squeeze extra photo goodness out of that small sensor. Hope this helps anyone looking to get better shots. Good day

This video looks great but..... the moment she used digital zoom.. I immediately scrolled down to the comments section.. and yeah, about the portrait mode, she should've used that instead of just the telephoto lens if you wanted the background to blur and adjust it to your liking.
With the LIDAR, I think it doesn't activate all the time? The phone only uses the LIDAR scanner when it needs to.

I think its fair to say that a full-frame mirrorless with some decent-to-great lenses come out ahead no question. But some of the comparisons here are kinda questionable? For example, when mimicking focal length, why not just walk closer to the subject so you don't crop the photo? And even tho Portrait Mode is enabled on phones mostly by software/ISP, I think it would've still been a fair comparison as its still amazing what it can do to compensate the lens and small sensor size.

FWIW- In the 55 years I've been a photographer and cinematographer, it has generally been accepted that the term "Bokeh" is the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. You have been using it in reference to any out of focus area, which I have always heard experienced professionals refer to as areas of Soft Focus. Creamy soft-focus, etc. Cheers

how ? the point is the distance between the lens front and camera back dictates the depth perception . basically a phone has a few mm . therefore has no depth , dx cameras have a bit more , full frame have loads , medium format has even more etc etc .. a phone sensor is miniscule compared to a dslr ,

  • @c.g.3510

Bokeh is the quality of out of focus (OoF) lights produced by either distance to subject/background, aperture and/or sensor size. Term also lately used for referring to OoF background.
Portrait Mode in phones renders a programmed OoF background. It is just a software result (like mini-photoshopping).
In that sense, if Portrait Mode is to be used in iPhone, then an in-camera (A7s) tool for creating "bokeh" would have to be used. Or maybe just post process it, photoshop it, etc. Apple's algorithms are nice but it's just that, software.
Otherwise, most phone cameras can't just make bokeh with those distances/sensor sizes/apertures.
    Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻

3:05 The sensor isn't responsible for the background blur. Put the same Sony lens on the iPhone sensor (without the iPhone lens) and the absolute background blur would be exactly the same, just the field of view would be much smaller and therefore the relative background blur would be even larger than on the Sony, if one would use the iPhone sensor with the same Sony lens.
