I have to say this is one of the best comparisons between a camera and a phone. And the styles that you do your videos are top notch... such a pleasure to watch.
Tony Northrup tested this, resolution wise, the 15 Pro resolves around the same detail as an 8-10 megapixel camera (i.e. less then the 12 megapixel A7S III once you remove the artificial sharpening). As for the lenses, you are getting 13mm f/10, 24mm f/6.3 and 77mm f/24 (120mm f/21 on the Max) fixed aperture equivalents to full frame. This is somewhat academic but I found it quite fascinating. Despite the sensors and technologies seeming like they couldn't be more different on paper, in practice, you can apply the same crop factor calculations. You get an image uncannily similar to taking an image on an A7RV at 35mm F/21 and then cropping 70% of the image out to match what the iPhone's 15 Pro Max tele lens does. 70% because the crop factor here is roughly 3.54x. Similarly if you take an image on the wide lens on the iPhone at iso450, it should equal 24mm f/6.4 at ISO3200 on FF - ISO formula is ISO*(CropFactor*2) - and wow, it does! - same exposure, same field of view, same depth of field, similar detail (if you resize the FF image down to around 8 megapixels and upsample to match the same image size), though iPhone has more aggressive noise reduction out of the box. So there's no inherit advantage in DOF, or resolution or low light performance or anything else. But knowing this, if I do want a lot of DOF I set my 24mm on the ZV-E1 to around f/6 (or f/4 on E10) and 12 megapixels still resolves more detail than 48 on the iPhone :)
Fantastic comparison! With all the iPhone 15 hype I'm surprised (and as a ZVE10 owner, honestly relieved 😅) how much better the Sony looks. I'm also really enjoying learning/using a "real" camera in having more control over the image. Looks like I certainly need to upgrade from the kit lens though!
I use the sigma 30 all the time! Wicked sharp en great image, also how much you see is very good, I like it for interviews and such. The standard lens, you should throw it away, it’s terrible
@@fabian3265 Same here. My Sigma 30mm has never left my Sony A5100 since 2017, and until now it's still generating pictures that are way better than any Apple of Android flagship.
First video I have seen of you and the sequence starting at 3:39 immediately gave you a new subscriber. Looking forward to browse through your catalog and to new videos.
Great comparison. As someone with a ZV-e10 and about to buy the new it would be great to hear how you combine footage from both in a project (e.g. what settings on each to make it easier to match)
Great video! I’ve wanted to buy a camera for years and have watched hundreds of videos about cameras on RUclips. However, on Instagram, people are like, “OMG, the iPhone 15 Pro is even better than full-frame! There is no need to cameras anymore …” I didn’t want to believe this. This video showed us how good the little ZVE10 is, even though it's a crop sensor :) Thank you so much; you saved us from falling for these marketing shows.
Yeah - the iPhone is a great piece of tech - but it's not replacing real cameras anytime soon for pros. There are a lot of people talking about how the phone is amazing, but very few of them will actually film their channel with it.
A fair and thorough comparison as always, sir! I will be switching to my new 15 pro max (with moment wide lens) for 99% of my vlogging, but my a7c still has its place in ‘studio’ like setups and astrophotography. It’s just hard to beat the convenience of an always in the pocket 4k camera with amazing stability.
Great video! I'd say the iPhone definitely looks great especially with the color graded pro res log shots. I'd definitely rather the zv e10 overall for content though. Not only does the overall shot look more natural but I definitely wouldn't be looking forward to uploading, editing and exporting an average 30 min long 250 gb file for RUclips
I still absolutely love my zv-e10. I have the FX30 and A7iv but find myself grabbing the zv-e10 for quick shooting. I think for the money the zv-e10 is the best bang for your buck. I recommend it all the time.
I love this comparison. Honestly, the iPhone is still within the "good enough" range for shooting as a B cam. Granted, it's truly all about the camera you have on your person, which is usually your phone. That said, if I had to choose, I'd still shoot with a crop sensor over my iPhone.
I love my zv-e10, added a 24-70mm gmii before upgrading to a A7iv. But the iphone can hold its own in many situations (not low light lol). The main plus for iphone is the stabilzation and uploading for social media. So both are great just got to knownl your use cases
Well I use Panasonic mirror less cameras and of course prefer where ever possible but to some situations like being alone on Paris trip now had to ask people about and some short footage for social media my iPhone pro have to be used 🙌
The video is extremely interesting as useful as always, although I've missed a zoom comparison as well. I have the E10 + Sigma 18-50 (around 1000$), it's just an example of versatility among other possible combinations.

I think you can make the iPhone 15 work for Vlogs for sure. Major upside is the fact that you can do everything else on the phone as well and it's probably always with you!
Amidst Apples hype machinery and all the „omg-hollywood-will-only-shoot-on-iphones-now“ type of reviews, this is the first fair and honest video about the new iPhone I‘ve come across. It‘s nice to see other people enjoy proper gear and the buying lenses 😉, too. Now, excuse me while I go and tell my A7S III how awesome she is…
Hey I'm back, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the effort you put into these videos. I can definitely see you've improved a lot in the way you make videos and the detail you put into each video. Like around a year back, some of your videos had small things that were not supposed to be there (like "Sony 24 GM f/1.4" text still being on when you were vlogging with the ZV-E10 and Sigma 16mm), but now I don't find anything like that!! Great job; keep up the great work. One thing I do want to say, is if you could put a little fade at the end of the music, like when you finish the comparison footage, and then put a little fade so it transitions a little more smoothly to your talking head shot. Don't know if this is making any sense, and it's totally up to you to decide if you wanna do it!
I really love your intonation and speech! English is not my native language and I listen to you with high attention to your technics And video is great as always! Thank you
iPhone 15 all the way. Got a ZV-E10 and returned it after a week: completely unusable in sunlight, quality is OK but iPhone is FAR more portable and easy to use, and it works in sunlight.
Nice video! I am just in the process of deciding whether I should buy the new Iphone or invest in this camera. Which is the next best lens you would recommend, if I can't afford this Sigma lens right now? Great video!
First of all great comparison, love your videos! I don't understand why so many comments mention "hype" in a negative way where clearly you can see by this comparison how far the smartphone cameras have come, especially iPhones in the video department. So small lenses and sensors and I think they still generate very crips and in most scenarios natural videos. And being nervous about it beating a larger camera to justify your purchase of a dedicated camera is not necessary lol. I think phones and especially iPhone are a great opportunity for people who want to shoot nice videos and still have all the features a smartphone offers. I have a Fuji's camera which shoots an excellent quality video, super crisp and natural, but I mainly still use iPhone 13 PM for everyday use because it has many advantages in terms of image stabilization and ergonomics.
Excellent comparison! I'm actually going to pick up the iPhone 15 Pro in a week or two and will be building a matching LUT for it to make life a lot easier :) The Blackmagic Camera app is the key to maximising quality, that's for sure! And as a bonus it supports viewing LUTs as well. Thanks as always! Cheers from Osaka, Japan :)
Thanks for the great comparison! Gives some good insight on whether I should Upgrade my iPhone. I shoot with a “Little Duggy,” on a Sigma Prime like you’ve suggested and LOVE the results. My friends are blown away with the professional results that I get.
Great comparison, waited for it! By the way, how do you record your voice throughout the video? After you showed mic test, I was wondering where your best-quality mic was placed
I think the iPhone pro max 15 is much convenient compared to ezv10 that you would need to spend couple times before go ahead. I'm concerned about the iPhone upgrading or deteriorating their phone every time they release a new iPhone; that's why I'm considering ZVE10.
I wasn't a big fan of how you recorded/graded the iPhone footage (I know I can get a better result out of it, especially for the studio), but overall you have done an amazing job comparing these cameras! Very good video, thanks!
I will not say which one is better, I will only say I love the Sony ZV-E10 experience over a mobile phone. Each one may choose what they like, I have clear my choice. Cheers!
The comparison was honestly closer than I thought it would be, it's a bit scary. I was on board for buying both the iPhone 15 pro max and a ZV-E10 but now I think that in order for me to justify carrying anything bigger than an iPhone it would have to be something full frame. That slightly more rare time I want to actually carry camera gear around like at an event or paid shoot has to have image quality that looks night and day difference, not early morning and afternoon. And the difference decreases the smaller the screen is, so modern phone cameras for most audiences seems to win for almost all situations.
As a mirrorless cam user, I could say the iPhone's camera quality is fantastic especially with its smaller sensor. I can only imagine the camera tech advancements that camera phones will have in the future that might probably close the gap between camera phones and actual cameras.
The iphone for such a small sensor is a fantastic camera for photos and videos. It is something that you don't need to worry about when using and that is its beauty. You can get some excellent footage and photos if you know what you re doing. Mirrroless cameras requires more effort however, the lens are far superior and offer a lot of versatlity. My biggest gripe with all mirrorless cameras is they fail on so many fronts - no internal SSD storage, dont use computational software, do not offer thunderbolt port, Wifi and Bluetooth are exceptional bad, software/firmware upgrades are poor and app support is absolutely the worst.
You’re about a year behind. No one really worries about their mirror less. Those issues are non issues now. And people who own mirrorless also owns iPhones.
Not even the latest iPhone changed what you get out of a phone camera: welcome to flat-face valley, right under the oversharp hills, with monumental unnecessarily-hdr skies above! :D
Another great thing to consider is the fact that the iPhone is theoretically water proof to any rain , while none of us would ever want our ZVE10’s getting rain on
Very well, explained and well-edited! I would really like to see how things go with DOF adapter on the iPhone 15 pro. The Beastgrip one, in particular.
Hi Bennett you create great videos. I am a big fan of yours. After watching a video I made a choice to buy zve10. Undoubtedly zve10 is the best. But when it comes to convenience of shoot and sent it on social media a phone is much better. Can you guide me if iPhone is better or Samsung ultra is better?
Man, I also have a ZV-E10 with a Sigma 16mm 1.4 and I can't get even close to the quality you get from this same kit. Your technic and color grading are amazing. 😅 Congratulations! 👏
From what my laptop screen showed, the iPhone skin color looked better, it looked sharper, and more pleasant. The Sony Kit Lens produced better skin color to my eyes, I did not like the skin color from the Sigma lens. Granted that you color graded all these videos so you had a say on how it all came out. To be honest, the conclusion I was able to gather from this video, if I only had $1000 USD, it would be better invested on an iPhone than a camera, the phone will always be with you at all times and the video quality is very comparable or even better in certain aspects. Thanks for the video which give people like me an idea of which route to take before spending any money.
Dude, I haven't even watched this yet (and I will), but this is such a great topic. This should get your channel tons of views. I wish I could be this clever with my little channel. ha ha
The iPhone stuff it tricky!! You know it will get views - but you don't want the wrong audience subscribing. If I get a bunch of "phone people" they will likely be disappointed with all my non-phone content. So I make sure it's stays true to the channel. It's still a risk!!
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I totally get where you're coming from about the phone fan boys and the haters. I watched the video even though I'm an Android guy myself.
Great video. Would have loved to see your studio recording with Apples own app. I've seen quite a lot of Blackmagic stuff and it appears to me not to fully take advantages of the new LOG-format.
I have watched dozens of channels that do these reviews. Mark is the one I trust more. I want to start a RUclips channel with indoor talking head videos so I got the Sony ZV-E10. I haven't taken it out of the box yet and still don't have the Sigma 16M f1.4. I know nothing about cameras and audio or video so hopefully it's easy to use to start a RUclips channel. Thank you Mark for this channel of yours. Separately, what audio equipment should I get for the Sony ZV-E10 for the purpose above? Also, some channels are saying that the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can replace the Sony ZV-E10 for indoor talking head videos for RUclips. Can you compare them maybe??
I will compare them, but I would never replace the zv-e10 in studio with a wide angle lens and a one inch sensor l However, vlogging might be a different story - we shall see
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis @thefilmalliance Mark, I saw your video with the settings (all tabs all pages) for the Sony ZV-E10. I just got my first camera ever. I tell you what I would like to see and learn at the end. Please consider it. I just want to start a RUclips channel with indoor talking head videos. The truth is that I found that video of the settings quite overwhelming and complicated. I started following each step. I put the speed at half the pace but mid video I got overwhelmed by all the settings. I don't understand why it is so complex in 2023. *Could you make a video explaining how to put the settings of that camera to make the YT indoor talking head videos look good or decent enough??* *One video with the default lens that comes with the camera. And a separate video with the Sigma 16M f1.4 lens?* (You recommend this lens a lot for YT indoors videos but I don't have it yet...$...I only have the default one still). I may be asking too much, but could you make a separate video slowly explaining what all those terms and variables mean? I don't want to become a camera or video expert. I don't shoot videos for a living but I am struggling with this now. Thank you for the consideration. J
ZV-E10 still kills it. The iPhones are always so oversharpened, but they have improved, especially in background blur!
Not just the sharpness, they overprocess the image in software as well.
The background blur is a bit of a double edged sword as the aperture is fixed, so there are some disadvantages for landscapes, sunrises/sunsets (the sun will always just be a blob), etc.
Thankfully this is equivalent to around 24mm f/6.4 full frame or 16mm f/4.2 APS-C so it's not too bad for your average quick snap.

Thanks for this comparison video Mark. I love my ZV-E10
I like the calibration or adjustments you made to the Blackmagic camera app. You are going to share how you made the adjustments?I loved it
Great comparison, waited for it!
Cheers!
ZV-E10 of course, thank you, you made me appreciate my Sony more :)
I searched this up thinking no one cared for a comparison, guess I was wrong😂 Nice video!👌🏻
Low light is an eye opener
Great comparison, comprehensive and clear.
Make a vedio on iPhone 16pro vs Sony zve10 mark 2
Please
Thanks for the comparison Mark!!! Btw, any news about the ZV-E10 mk2?
They usually wait 4 year to update a product - it's only been 2 for the ZV-E10 - so I doubt it's coming anytime soon - just a guess
Please I hope they release a ZV-E10 mark 2 or ZV- E20. It’s about time 🙏🏼
They usually wait about 4 year - so not likely for a while yet - possibly next October - but that's just a guess
Thank you for this Mark.
One question. What picture profile did you use when recording this footage?
Amazing video.. cleared so many doubts ! Keep it up 👍🏻
Thank you Mark, you just made it clear for me to choose the ZV-E10 :-)
I am so glad you made this video. THANKS for all your help. Still using little dougie on my channel.
He's still amazing!!
another time you answer questions I didn't even know I had 😆thanks for this video, will pass upgrading my iPhone for another year I guess.
Very sympathetic person and a great review! 👍
finally somebody testing different scenario.
Great and well done 🙌🏼
Sony w nice lens is the way to go.. but if you are hiking and need to keep weight down. iPhone 15 would be great tool to use.
Awesome comparison Mark
Another great thing to consider is the fact that the iPhone is theoretically water proof to any rain , while none of us would ever want our ZVE10’s getting rain on
fair point!!
check out my latest video on slog3!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I surely will. Big hug from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Great comparison. ❤
My god this is the first time I’ve come across one of your videos and I thought Christopher Nolan started to be a tech reviewer now 😂😂😂
😂
I'd be interested to see how the iPhone compares with a the black magic app, apple log and a T Series Moment lens?
Great comparison! Recently got the ZV E-10 with Sigma 16mm and this is very helpful.
Hey Slippin' Mark! that's another great video! ZV-E10 is not just a camera. Its a Legend..
This was really helpful for me. Thank you!
Dude looks like Christopher nolan from Amazon ❤️
He wishes
Great video. Would have loved to see your studio recording with Apples own app. I've seen quite a lot of Blackmagic stuff and it appears to me not to fully take advantages of the new LOG-format.
Thank you for doing this. This is a very good comparison as I own both! Very informative. :)
Zv E10 with Sony 11 mm is other levels
I prefer the kit lens over the more expensive lens. Too much background blur is weird for a travel vlog.
You are making useful videos, and you're views are OK, but you're subscribers number is not what you deserve. You worth more than this 🌷👌🏻
I’m probably worth about this much 🤣
The log on the iPhone 15 is shockingly good. I know Jordan from PetaPixel was raving about how good it was.
need test 15 pro max VS sony ZV-E1 or FX or iphone 11 pro vs 15 pro
im not worried about iphones replacing these kinds of cameras anytime soon
The stabilization on the iPhone is really good! Did you turn on "Action Mode"?
No!! That was standard mode. It's bananas good.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Try action mode on the iPhone 15 Pro.... Tyler Stalman did a video on it... no gimbal needed
@@stkuj Action mode crops the picture way too much
I have watched dozens of channels that do these reviews.
*Could you make a video explaining how to put the settings of that camera to make the YT indoor talking head videos look good or decent enough??*
*One video with the default lens that comes with the camera. And a separate video with the Sigma 16M f1.4 lens?*
(You recommend this lens a lot for YT indoors videos but I don't have it yet...$...I only have the default one still).
I may be asking too much, but could you make a separate video slowly explaining what all those terms and variables mean?
I don't want to become a camera or video expert. I don't shoot videos for a living but I am struggling with this now.
Thank you for the consideration.
