If you texted either nobody would know what took it. The iPhones have some easy give always when you know what to look for but overall on the screens we view 99 percent of our images it’s good enough these days.
I think no matter the outcome, even the fact that you have to reaaaaaalllly look closely to see the difference speaks volumes to the capability of modern day smartphone cameras...
I am a professional photographer and I shoot with both my iPhone (now 1Pro Max) and my mirrorless (Canon EOS R). There have been many times that I end up choosing an iPhone shot over the R shot. I also love a quick tweak in PhotoShop on my phone. When I need to retouch more I move to my MacBook Pro, it is all a seamless process. Which I love. I shoot primarily fashion and portraits so this works perfectly for me. I can get the clients excited in the moment with a sneak peak on my phone. I come from the analog world when I first started my career, so all of this is beyond fun and exciting. You and your brother are funny, goofy (no insult) and informative. Keep up the good work. PS: I got 1 wrong.
I only got one wrong - the same one you did. I will say that on the AirBnB balcony shot, what gave it away was that the pro DLSR's can do bokeh in front and back of the subject. iPhones can only do back bokeh. The railing on the balcony was out of focus in the front *and* the back.
Any lens has (in case of the Iphone just minimal) bokeh. You are referring to the artificial blur of the background in the IPhone's portrait mode, which is totally different.

"for the price" its still 1500 dollars for their model of iphone pro max, and if you have an older iphone already, youd be better off buying a sony a6100 and a solid lens. The difference between that and the R5 in a blind comparison is almost negligible without pixel peeping.
Comparing the shots side by side I was able to get them all. The tower was the one that was a bit of a challenge, but I picked the correct one because I based my decision on what my guess of the focal length. But if you uploaded them without the side by side, it would be pretty hard to pick out, I bet. I also shoot analog film, so that's probably why I was able to pick the correct ones.
7/7 for me. Focus in the background and foreground gave it away as well as level of detail and granularity. There was one photo where the buildings were slanted near the edge of the photo and I saw that as a typical artifact of camera phones. Overall great video! Great job guys! You've helped convince me of the picture prowess of the iphone 12. TY.
It’s great that phones are this good now! Even as a photographer it is great to have a decent snapshot cam always available. So yes the iPhone shoots a natural image in front of you, that’s the job of Camera Right? But how would it look zoomed with dark interiors? Probably like an Aquarell right? If it would actually compare, then this channel would be filmed with an iPhone right?
The forth images with the tower landscape are the hardest! Definitely hard to tell which one is a camera or an iPhone:) And also always love seeing how you create together!
Phones are really good nowadays, but all of them still have some sort of phone feel to them, its hard to pinpoint but i think its due to the small sensors, since compacts (with small sensors) also have this feel to the pictures. Only phone i have seen which did not have this was the Nokia 808 Pureview with its almost 1" (inch) sensor. then there is of course the depth of fields, also due to the small sensor and fine detail in landscape shots. If you only shot for social media and 90% of your shots are seen on phones then yes, no one will notice. However if you wanna print or view you images on large 4k+ tv's then there is still a pretty large difference.

Cool comparison! I got them all right…I had the resolution at 4K and put the video on full screen… and had to look at the details :-). For the last one, for sure the skin gave it away, but also the colors/lighting on your coat. For the 4th one with the tower in the center…. the shadows on the tower helped me choose, but it was still a bit of guesswork. For the 5th one….the text on your sweater helped give it away. Thanks for the video!
I shot a film recently using a BMPCC 4K and iPhone 12 Pro Max completely with anamorphic lenses on both (Sirui and Moment). With some care in shooting and colour correction in post, they are virtually indistinguishable from each other. The only thing that gives away the difference is the lack of DoF in the iPhone - ie. everything is sharp in wider shots. In closeups, even the iPhone squeezed out some shallow DoF. The digital sharpness of the iPhone is easily compensated for with a 10% Cinebloom Diffusion filter.
I could see the difference on my iPhone 12 screen knowing what to look for. In the end nobody would notice the difference if you texted them and didn’t say what it came from and that’s why smartphones are killing camera sales. Unless you print it or need the manual controls the iphones good enough.
For 90% of all situations and people the iPhone is the better camera. You have it always with you, and you can take pictures almost without people taking notice. So, the results will be more natural
You are teaching me well! I got one wrong. This video is such a good learning tool for central principals and a good assessment of what I've picked up so far from you and the other channels to which I subscribe! Thanks. Much appreciated!
I was wrong once. As good as the portraits are, I found it easiest to discover the difference there. And I personally don't like what the iphone does to the skin. Looks unnatural to me in direct comparison.
I only got 4 and 5 wrong. What gave most of them away for me what the highlights and DoF. If you're just posting to IG and other social media, a smartphone will be more than enough. For me personally, the experience of actually taking the photo and the tactile feel of actually holding a full-fledged camera in my hands and turning dials is just as important to me as the photo and that's something you just don't get with a phone. Still shoot a lot with my phone, but I always pull my camera out first. Great video as always!
Great comparison video! Even though I guessed them all correctly and preferred the look of the R5 most of the time, the iPhone photos were pretty impressive. Also, the video coming out of your A7S is amazing, too!
I have the 12pro max and it's nowhere near a full frame mirrorless, in good light it can take a good shot but I have a 25 year old piont and shoot that in good light can take as good of shot, the iPhone falls apart fast out of Bright light but the camera still looks amazing, there's still a big difference between them
I got 2 wrong. The first close up portrait and the one you got wrong as well with the Toronto tower between the two buildings. But I'm watching on an iPhone🥴 I'm using an iPhoneXr and took photos in the snow and they look incredible! So, yeah. Totally usable ✨
Great stuff! I know there are probably plenty of examples of this out there, but would love to see a series of just iphone shots and how using the phone changes your workflow. If editing is any different, etc. Would also love to see how editing the phone vs. the R5 photos differed to get such close results just to see the difference of the starting points for each.
7:07 What gave it away to me was the background compression. The iPhone does a great job in portrait mode with simulated bokeh blur, but you can't spoof focal length.
I got all of them right especially after you mentioned that iPhone has way more details and also because for some reason iPhone has more of a zoomed out effect. But the details one helped me out on almost all of them.
Got them all right but they are quite similar. The two key differences are the R5 is much more sharp and the bokeh is more natural. But again, we're talking about a $6000 setup vs a $1100 phone that fits in your pocket and does many other things. Pretty insane how close they are to being the same quality!
9:32 you know how I knew? by the blurred laces on your hoodie :D additionally, iPhone completely separates the object from the background and canon does this gradually, so, the right shoulder is blurred a bit by the camera lens
It would be great if you could do a comparison using Moment lenses, I think that you would see a significant improvement in DoF:) I have been doing a lot of testing with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and Moment lenses, and I have produced prints at A3+ that look amazing. I am very close to ditching my DSLR setup and just going with the iPhone 12 Max Pro, Moment lenses, and my Sony RX100 MK 7 for my future setup. I have now added the PolarPro LiteChaser Director collection to my setup, so I am now covered the video production as well:)
I got them all correct. Art is art. Honestly, it’s not my photographic eye, but my artist eye. I’m a 74 yr. old in Florida, USA who has been an artist since I was 12 and have developed a really good eye in general. I had zero preconceived idea of what the issues were or were not with the iPhone or the Canon. I have just started back in photography after over 30 years. I have a total of about 3 years experience with photography and am finding a DSLR a challenge - totally new world. It delighted me to judge the photos SOLELY on what I feel was good artistic rendering. You are so right, though. The iPhone is amazing. I wouldn’t give up for a minute, though, the wonderful time I’m having learning the DSLR. What a fun exercise!
just goes to say how important is the photographer. your brother is amazing, and he knows what he's doing so the photos look amazing! and, he edited the photos so he used the maximum potential of the iPhone.
I think i was selecting preference over actually choosing which, but im on the fence on maybe to buy the 12 pro max over the 12pro because of the camera capabilities and this has been very helpful, many thanks
Thanks for posting. Great video. Great channel. I take more and more photos with my iPhone 11 PRO and fewer and fewer with my big Canon camera. I am asking myself, when should I still use a big Canon. In some applications, such as on safari in Africa, I need a fast camera that can make use of a 400 mm zoom lens. I wonder what other situations or conditions are the big cameras (DSLR or mirrorless) still worth using?
First. Surprisingly I got them all wrong. In the landscape the iPhone is a slightly cooler image. Also this is gonna be a great year for you two! The Finland Boys Are Awesome and I’m Here For It! Great team!
Perfect score. My tricks for how to tell. Check out the line between your skin and your beard. The iPhone adds more contrast and fills in the "holes" in your beard. Also, the DoF. The iPhone backgrounds look shaky, like they were taken with too slow of a shutter speed, to get their blur. The R5 DoF just blurs like a portrait lens should. And building straitening... (not all pictures.) The CN Tower is obvious. The iPhone tries to straighten one side of it. The R5 lets both sides curve up from the base.
I got most of them right but that is not the point I think. I can see the difference, but the amazing thing is here, how incredible good the iPhone photos are for such a small lens and sensor. I would really love to have an Canon FF Camera like the R5 with the computational photography capabilities of the iPhone. I would love to have seen a video comparison too, saw a comparison between a Sony FDR-AX700 4K HDR Camcorder and the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it is amazing how well there it also keeps up.
I also got 2 wrong, but I'd say those 2 tools are different! the phone is the camera always with us, it's automatic mostly and much computational photography is done, but when you want the real thing, the manual options and do something out the box, a phone won't do. I don't think we are close to the time when a phone can replace a DSLR camera. I've got to say that the iphone isn't the best camera phone in my opinion as well though it's getting better
5 out of 7 right (missed 5 and 6). The portrait mode seemed a little easier to differentiate between because of how you can see a stark line around the hat.
I was able to nail everyone one of them. I did struggle with one of the landscapes, but the sunlight had better saturation with the r5. I do have a good eye for pixel peeping. like when I was a kid and they would show you the pictures and you have to pick the one that was different? Always nailed them before anyone else. I only shoot with an RP, But I was really blown away by how good the iPhone shots were.🤯
Watch this on an iPhone screen and only got the landscape pic wrong. It should be a lot easier when looking at a bigger screen. But fun to watch. Thanks for the smile.
Wow, very impressiv how the iPhone doing his job against the Canon! 😄 I got following result: Picture 1: ✅ Picture 2: ✅ Picture 3: ✅ Picture 4: ✅ Picture 5: ❌ Picture 6: ❌ Picture 7: ✅ On Picture 5 I was thinking because of the "crispness of the picture. And Picture 6 I was meant because of the High Dynamic Range. But I think 5 of 7 are an okisch result. 😁 Thank for comparing the booth cameras and show how good pictures are possible if you spend a bit time to compose and frame your pics. 😊
Great video, yes indeed smartphone camera's are getting slightly better every year. But they are great for short range photography. They still can't beat a decent photocamera when it's about the zoom function and settings for long range and low light photography.
Awesome video - love it - I'm (Jenn) waiting on my new phone - super pumped to get started with it - oh and side note - we stayed in that exact air BnB lol the night skyline view is MINT! Thanks for the video!
I got one wrong. Last picture sees a big difference in black/gray. The R is much better in dark situations and gray tone or in dept pictures. Nice comparison...I've a pro as well..and a normal dslr and often use the iPhone!
The biggest giveaway is more detail in the shadows with the Canon. Also, the R5 is generally warmer. I have the 12 Pro Max as well as a high-end Olympus M4:3 DSLR with Leitz lenses, and I can tell the difference in virtually every comparison, but the 12 PM is very impressive.
Be honest how many did you guess right?????

The digital sharpness of the iPhone is easily compensated for with a 10% Cinebloom Diffusion filter.
When you watch these on 85” tv, it’s much easier. Zero mistakes.
That’s the thing who looks at pictures on a 85 inch tv lol? 95% of people look at pictures on their iPhone
Weird flex. BTW...
LOL still riding high on a 42 inch 720p here! Way behind times...
@@moritzio4.034 there’s no flexing. Just an observation that it’s easier to spot differences on a bigger screen.
I only got one wrong, but MAN those portrait shots were TOUGH. This is getting ridiculously close lol.
Also missed the first landscape shot from the balcony.... Just amazing the similarities that these phones are able to get close to
That was so enjoyable to watch
You are teaching me well! I got one wrong. This video is such a good learning tool for central principals and a good assessment of what I've picked up so far from you and the other channels to which I subscribe! Thanks. Much appreciated!
I was wrong once. As good as the portraits are, I found it easiest to discover the difference there. And I personally don't like what the iphone does to the skin. Looks unnatural to me in direct comparison.
They are super close but the dynamic range and coloring gave it away most the of the time for me but it's hardly noticeable which is CRAZY!
this is exactly why I will never buy a $6000 set up. Im fine with my Sony a6400 / iPhone 12 Pro Max
This is nuts! The differences now are so tiny to the eye with very little to choose between them. Great vid as usual!
You know somebody’s from Toronto when they call it “Chrawno”
I only got 4 and 5 wrong. What gave most of them away for me what the highlights and DoF. If you're just posting to IG and other social media, a smartphone will be more than enough. For me personally, the experience of actually taking the photo and the tactile feel of actually holding a full-fledged camera in my hands and turning dials is just as important to me as the photo and that's something you just don't get with a phone. Still shoot a lot with my phone, but I always pull my camera out first. Great video as always!
Kind of surprised, that I got everything right.
Great comparison video! Even though I guessed them all correctly and preferred the look of the R5 most of the time, the iPhone photos were pretty impressive. Also, the video coming out of your A7S is amazing, too!
It's crazy how far phones have come to the point where an iPhone with a super tiny sensor can keep up with a professional full-frame camera!
iphone pics were clearly edited while R5 pics were not
@@awesomestuff2496 probably but it’s still pretty cool
Absolutely correct!
But I'm watching on an iPhone🥴
I'm using an iPhoneXr and took photos in the snow and they look incredible! So, yeah. Totally usable ✨
what a beautiful view from that patio! must be so refreshing up there at -12 in the morning!
I got them right, but the fact you really have to look for specific details and have them side by side is amazing.
7:07 What gave it away to me was the background compression. The iPhone does a great job in portrait mode with simulated bokeh blur, but you can't spoof focal length.
Really enjoy watching your stuff! And really enjoying the dynamic between you and your brother!
I got all of them right especially after you mentioned that iPhone has way more details and also because for some reason iPhone has more of a zoomed out effect. But the details one helped me out on almost all of them.
im loving these vids with your bro!!
Got them all right but they are quite similar. The two key differences are the R5 is much more sharp and the bokeh is more natural. But again, we're talking about a $6000 setup vs a $1100 phone that fits in your pocket and does many other things. Pretty insane how close they are to being the same quality!
On iPhone you can add shallow depth of field with the Focos app. And control how much. Don’t know if it’s a professional thing to do but I love it.
9:32 you know how I knew? by the blurred laces on your hoodie :D additionally, iPhone completely separates the object from the background and canon does this gradually, so, the right shoulder is blurred a bit by the camera lens
Matti, would you buy the a1??
with the 6k camera, are they taking pictures raw and then editing the image with Lightroom or they just take jpg photos and post them ?
I wish my grandma knew about iPhones lol, she once asked me to pause an online game
9:55 Look at the unnatural edge of the collar on the iPhone vs the R5, and the missing drawstring.
just goes to say how important is the photographer. your brother is amazing, and he knows what he's doing so the photos look amazing! and, he edited the photos so he used the maximum potential of the iPhone.
I think i was selecting preference over actually choosing which, but im on the fence on maybe to buy the 12 pro max over the 12pro because of the camera capabilities and this has been very helpful, many thanks
5/7 as well! It is really good! I think I got one of the ones you got wrong right... but still so hard to tell!
Very happy to see this, just a few days from picking up my 12 pro max
Was that the newly built Skytower that Teppo's staying in?? Or is it the taller of the two ICE condos buildings? SUPER cool view!!!!
5 out of 7 right (missed 5 and 6). The portrait mode seemed a little easier to differentiate between because of how you can see a stark line around the hat.
How do you work with HDR on your computer without the photo being too white? All my HDR photos are too white on my windows pc!
I got the same ones right and wrong as you. You’re definitely helping to train my eye!
I got following result:
Picture 1: ✅
Picture 2: ✅
Picture 3: ✅
Picture 4: ✅
Picture 5: ❌
Picture 6: ❌
Picture 7: ✅
On Picture 5 I was thinking because of the "crispness of the picture. And Picture 6 I was meant because of the High Dynamic Range.
But I think 5 of 7 are an okisch result. 😁
Thank for comparing the booth cameras and show how good pictures are possible if you spend a bit time to compose and frame your pics. 😊
Great video as always! Really enjoyed the photo comparison. I did got one of them wrong though. Keep up the good work!
In the portrait there is a greenish color cast in the shadows (very noticeable in the jacket)
Great video, yes indeed smartphone camera's are getting slightly better every year. But they are great for short range photography. They still can't beat a decent photocamera when it's about the zoom function and settings for long range and low light photography.
Thanks for making this video. Its so fun guessing the picture.. sooo close..
The iPhone is the one that when you list as your main Camera in a proposal, the prospective client doesn't call you back
🤣
The biggest giveaway is more detail in the shadows with the Canon. Also, the R5 is generally warmer. I have the 12 Pro Max as well as a high-end Olympus M4:3 DSLR with Leitz lenses, and I can tell the difference in virtually every comparison, but the 12 PM is very impressive.
I honestly can't see the difference between you and your brother! Kidding! Cool vid!
Thanks for a great job! Really enjoyed your video. You guys are bringing so much of positive energy! Subscribed
Fellow Finn here, love your videos lately with Teppo!
