I would say this camera is for someone exactly like me. A beginner-ish videographer who has an A7iii and doesn't really want another typical alpha camera body in their kit but wants the features of the A7siii and some of the FX6, as I wade into the cinema camera world.
It comes with the XLR adapter. That adapter doesn't sell on its own right now, but with the mic it costs $600. So that, to me, is what the FX3 offers that the A7S III doesn't.
As someone who came from shooting on Fuji before switching to Sony I can tell you that tally lights are a GOD SEND on multi camera shoots. Being able to quickly glance across a room from most angles and see if a camera has stopped recording for whatever reason has saved me multiple times now.
You can actually enable the record assist on the A7SIII to make sure that you’re actually recording. It enables a bold red outline around the frame that shows that you’re currently recording.😉
I have a brand new A7SIII and see no conflict with this FX3, the only real advantage i see its the inclusion of the XLR capable handle interface, but i usually use external recorders so its not a big deal for me. Maybe in the future i will add it to my gear along my A7SIII, but no replacing it. I always use a cage, i have a Smallrig one, and its perfect to me. Greetings from Chile.
It’s a real miss on Sony’s party to not include the auto ND. that is one of their greatest achievements and more useful than the ibis on a small gimbal friendly camera
Yes, why the hell did they even put a shutter in it? We already have a photo shooting FX3 in the A7SIII. Shouldn't cinema cameras have internal ND? So f'ing lazy Sony!
@Cherian Philip well ye, but why not buy the sIII then? Specs are identical. Dont really see the point of this 400 dollar more expensive camera, that should in theory offer more as a latest release.
@@destinfarr Hm well its a great camera, but you dont get as much dynamic range and its "only" a super35 sensor. Which normally would´nt prevent me from buying it, but the ONE thing that does is the non existing Eye Auto Focus. I film a lot of interviews and it is such a joy seeing the protagonist in focus 100% of the time no matter where he/shes moves.
FX3 any day for professional video work. XLR inputs, active cooling system, top handle, mounting points, dedicated video buttons. a7S III still is a great camera with similar image quality, but the FX3 is just more reliable and convenient for professional work.
I will say as a videographer… this is definitely a camera I would go after. It has the form factor and convinces I am looking for. Now alternatively, Mark Bone said it best, no ND and no time code sync. Those two features would leave me to just save up and get the FX6. Now I personally, after purchasing the FX6, intend to sell my other cameras and get the FX3 as my B-Cam alternative. Again, I am a videographer not a photographer and with that I will leave the A7SIII to the likes of you and other photographers.
after 14hrs of binge-watching all the content I've missed from you recently. Can confirm, your stuff is awesome Peter! Definitely one of my favs on youtube!!!
Peter from Sweden, again thank you for this review! Always good to have your point of view. Hope all the studio construction is heading in the right direction for you! Thomas from Canada!
Seems pretty confusing. Kinda wish they had the internal ND. Or something more groundbreaking like NVMe m2 SSD grip that records internal without a Ninja V.

The fact this didn’t have internal ND solidified my decision to get an A7SIII. The lock on the mode dial is an annoyance for me as well. I also don’t know if I wanna go back to flipping through modes digitally either. I started on an a5100 and that makes me think of that experience. I’d need hand on experience though, it’s probably way more functional now especially considering I’ve learned a lot. I also don’t think the 4K 12mp sensor is enough for hybrid photo as a first cam. So I wouldn’t recommend it for that which is one reason I DO see a place for an Fx3. People who know their needs probably shouldn’t get the A7SIII as a PRIMARY photo cam anyways. I think something like an 18 mp 6K sensor would be nice for the future if they wanted the SIII to SIV to be hybrid pro for both video and stills. Then again, we now have the issue of an A7 SIV having new features the cine line essentially has to have.... An Fx3II would really need like SDI and internal ND to be different and they already haven’t accomplished that. Kinda makes sense that if your video first but do require some photo you get an Fx6 and an A7SIII. I don’t think the A1 really blew me away in a sense where I don’t necessarily think it’s that camera to match the Cine line. Though it is the actual hybrid pro camera right now, it just doesn’t seem to be “IT.” Will be for some but not for most. Then we need to consider data rates will be insane on the 50mp sensor. I think the sweet spot in 3 years for Sony is 6 k versions of all of these new cameras (SIII, Fx3, and Fx6) then something like like internal ND, SDI, 4K DCI. It would mean the SIV possibly wouldn’t have these features but it also means that there is in fact a difference between the two and the SIV is more useful in hybrid applications considering it would be higher resolution. I’m just thinking as I type haha
@@mounirnatour Sony's internal VND is electronic, meaning it can adjust exposure for you without changing setting. You can't do that with an external VND.

For regoular ground use, i don't see big reasons to buy this instead a7s3.. maybe better reliability on very long shoots as the cooling is better

This is for those who shoots 90% video instead of photo and want a body that is more video centric and is looking to get a a7siii. I can see where sony is heading for and I applaud them for that. Since 5D mark 2 Era I always want a dslr body but is video centric. Canon came out with c70 and now sony fx3. This is very good for the industry and we are given so many choices. I was honestly a little disappointed that it didn’t have build in ND filters. However, the more I think about it the more I am convinced it is a good option for the cine line. The way I think about it is that this is the A7siii if you were on a higher budget film. It will fill in the role of a B or C cam to the fx6 or other cine camera’s with the reliability of a cine camera line. You have the same performance as a a7siii with a built in fan so you get the extra peace of mind and reliability that is required for higher budget films. I am not however saying that the a7siii is not reliable as I think it is. But this gives a reliability that is assured.
First time coming across the channel. Love the format. If I had to choose between those 2 specific cameras, I would probably go for the A7Siii for the versatility.

So I'm getting the A7sIII now . I was on the fence about the two. I really want to the FX6 but I can't wait as I have a job I need it for. thanks for the great review.
Why no mention of the XLR handle? It gives you a Top handle with two XLR/3.5mm TRS combo audio inputs , Microphone holder and 3.5mm mic input, and Digital audio with up to 4-channel, 24-bit recording. To me, that's a huge thing that it has over the a7siii. No need to spend $600 on the xlr-k3m. I was going to get an a7siii but am now going for the fx3 for that reason.
I think given the top handle with XLR’s that come with it gives the camera a more complete kind of cinema camera for less money package. Cause the fx6 may still be out of the range of some so this gives you as close as an entry point as you gonna get being only $400 more than the A7SIII

I was wondering, do you think that Sony might be putting this camera out to compete with Canon's new C70? So good to see a video from you again. Can't wait to see more videos on the new studio.
Hi Peter, can you answer this? "Either on A7S iii or FX3, is exposure comp. value saved in a memory/recall slot so that slot1 is ev-0.3 and slot2 is ev+1.0 in video mode for example?"
So tempted to switch from Nikon to Sony but just can't seem to bite that bullet. I think having this and an A7 rv would be the combo of a life time for photo + video + backup on both fronts.
My job bought me an FX-3 before I started (been shooting on blackmagic previously) after 2 weeks I'm enjoying using it. I used to have A7sii which I loved. I think for people just getting into videography or if you just to fast run and gun, I think this camera is great. You can just set your settings and off you go. Kind of like the 6k pro but it has all the internal stabilising stuff and auto focus so if you still a bit wobbly on those things it be a real help. It's also great for hand held. Will definitely consider this as a B camera or if I was shooting in low light conditions like clubs or weddings
I have the a7siii and do mostly "run & gun" with no rig. I use Catalyst Browse for stabilization. During the day, the EVF is essential. If I used a rig, the FX3 would likely be the better choice.
Great review as always. I own both Canon and Sony...really enjoy the Sony layout, features, and ease of use. Don't know I need to buy a cinema grade camera at this time but good to know it's out there should I ever be in the market. Think that glove company should sponsor some of your videos...that's gloves look perfect for filming in the winter! 👍👍👍
It's literally no hastle to add a cage to the a7s3 which allows for way more accessories to be added. The view finder is axing for those quick social media shots and the s cinetone profile is on the a7s3 now as well. Only benefit i see is for drone use
1. I’m not a photographer and never use an evf 2. XLR Ports 3. Rec lights. 4. Fan is a nice to have but not a deal breaker. Not having built in nd filters is a big miss, but for those shooting 100% video I think it’s a better option. One thing I don’t like about these hybrid cameras is that the lenses are built more for photography than video. More compact dedicated cinema lenses would be great to pair with a camera like this.
Who is this camera for? My guess is that it makes the most sense for people who own a camera like the A7C, A7iii or a camera more dedicated to photography. Sure, you can take photos on the A7S iii but why would you if you have a more suitable camera? The FX3 is more video oriented and that’s why I love it. That and paired with the XLR module is why I’d pick it instead of the A7S iii as my goto video camera. Tack för underhållande videos som alltid! 🙌🏻
I see it more as an expensive uncompromising crash cam when the producer doesn’t want to risk damaging or losing a Fx6 or FX9 for a risky shot. The small body size is useful for certain use cases. For everything else or for a “one man band” online content creator or producer.. I think the a7siii is a more versatile camera.. I guess we will see how people use it once it’s out for a few months
I’m a stills shooter......but it seems like a bit of an ‘own goal’ to not have put internal ND’s in the FX3, that looks like a huge omission to me. If it had Internal ND’s, then I could see this really making a difference, as it is, I’m not sure there enough of an advantage for a hybrid shooter for the things that are on the FX3 vs what they have taken away that the A7S3 has. But what do I know, I’m a stills shooter.
Great video, you got many points that none of the other RUclipsrs gone over. Btw is it using the same battery? I wonder why I asked, not like I'm going to buy one
yes, does it have that settings, i saw it in another video. There are ocassion where you need it disabled, a few months ago, i have been recording a short film, recording to an atomos ninja v, which have a tally light and in one shot that bloddy tally light appears in a dark scene reflected on a surface, iso i needed to disable, same apply to camera tally lights.

I like it! More rugged. Attachment points. I love my a7siii but I probably will buy it (and or the FX6). GREAT JOB AGAIN! PETER!!
You are the first one I subscribed
Hello Peter! long time no see😁😁
I love the build quality and brought it at once.
this is awesome made the decision much easier thank you !
Which lens you were using in this video for your A Roll?
我非常喜欢看你的视频 peter 并以你的视频作为榜样 希望学到更多的东西
I would love to try this camera out ! You got some amazing footage out it 🔥🔥
I have a Sony A7III, should I get the FX6 for video and keep the A7III for photos? What's your advice?
Great video man
Did you not receive the handle?
Why the camera your recording is missing the focus did you rush or overtrust the autofocus?
I used a different lens than usual ☹️
@@PeterLindgren1 thanks for responding
5d mark iv and and EOS R and r6 which one is best for wedding photography and long term use
Yes finally a new video
Thanks! Yes it is using the same one 👌🏼
RUclips explodes with FX3, but who do we all go to first? Our main man in skinny jeans! 😉💪
Hahaha BOOM! You gotta come down once the studio is done 😎
@@PeterLindgren1 Would LOVE to! OR if you need an extra hand before it's done 😉
I think if this FX3 had built in ND it would shine on its own, but not really much point otherwise. It looks cool IMO
Is there a setting to disable the tally lights as well?
yes, does it have that settings, i saw it in another video. There are ocassion where you need it disabled, a few months ago, i have been recording a short film, recording to an atomos ninja v, which have a tally light and in one shot that bloddy tally light appears in a dark scene reflected on a surface, iso i needed to disable, same apply to camera tally lights.
thanks big brother for clear my confusion . so i wanan buy a7siii thanks . love frm india
How did you shoot that moon so close? 600mm?
nice video thank you and i think the FX3 looks amazing!
perfect B-Roll, nice Cam, I like the FX3. Perhaps give her a try. Thanks for this straight vid.
Love the editing and beat
Jeez, 462 000 subscribers! When I last looked, about 5 seconds ago, you "only" had 200 000. That must be a record somewhere!
Well, if that was the growth it would be wicked. I had 200k in the beginning of 2020 I think 🤔😃
Great video, Peter, hugs
FX3 is for someone like me who has a A7S2, not the A7S3 and want a cinema camera for videography
Thanks for giving a level-headed review.
