From the beginning I thought a year was going to be way too long. But b4 u leave the project be sure to cover every perspective. I especially enjoyed this one. You covered the one question I was hoping to get out of your experiment; i.e. how hard is it to transfer back & forth between platforms--would one lose much in the way of speed & accuracy. It sounds as if one could have two pistols--one for carry/duty & one for competition. Now I can split my range/practice time between the two without anxiety. Enjoy your experiment. Thanks for your public service Jay!!

J Helmsing, I really appreciate this video, it seemed to be geared exactly to the question I had asked you a week ago and it’s really helped me make a final decision. Today I sold my FNS-9 to switch platforms and will be using that money to buy myself a gen 5 G34 and G26 for the wife. As mentioned before, once I live in a free state again I’ll be carrying and focusing on transition between a race and carry gun from Glock. Thanks a bunch for all the useful info! I really think this video was a great Segway into “project 2 gun” in a new platform, we would love to see you continue doing this using Sig, FN, and any other popular carry/competition lineups.
Thanks again! Looking forward to your next videos!

"One Gun" or at least one platform is a great idea from a inventory logistics standpoint. All Glocks makes for an easy time keeping spare mags, holsters, and parts.
Personally, I found that I became a better shooter when I started shooting a variety of guns. With each one I had to deal with a different trigger pull and the varying weights, stacking, pre-travel, reset, etc. After a while I just concentrated not on "learning the trigger" but on just pressing it straight to the rear and not thinking about where it broke or what it did before the break.
This really illustrated itself perfectly when I shot a friend's Hi-Point. They're not known for great trigger quality but I still chewed up the center of a target with it.

Hate saying it, but I am a Sig fanboy, as I am also a Ruger revolver fanboy. For me the sig guns are far sexier than most other brands. Why does that matter? I dont know, but it factors in. The CZ 75s are an exception to that statement. 🤟 thanks for going through with this project.

J, I love this series, when you started I was thinking that the G17 would have been the best platform for the one gun. As you mentioned before the two gun option would probably be best; for that, I would probably opt for a G17 and a G26. Thank you for your service in the military and as an LEO.

Thanks J for providing the info & insight that you do. If you are looking for our input on "how to proceed" with this experiment, IMO, you can keep the principle of the experiment and fulfill the basic premise by carrying the 19. However, it would be an asset for us all if you choose to shoot & review more guns. I would think you would enjoy shooting other gun types more as well. Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work on all fronts. Lord bless.

Good video ! I am issued a Glock 22 which I hate because of the caliber and carry a G19 Gen 3 off duty . My favorite duty gun is a Glock 21 that road with me for 18 years but it has been retired to the nite stand.

So when I was doing this I learned to stay within a manufacturer rather than a specific model. Aka Glock 19 for carry, Glock 34 for competition. I learned the trigger being the same was the most important aspect. Now that I've moved to Tanfoglio race guns... keeping a DA/SA trigger is more important than anything else when I shoot something else. I say all this to tell you my opinion is that you should probably just shoot 320 series guns. You're issued the gun and your life could literally depend on it. Also since you could theoretically keep the same trigger in all those guns you should/could carry a compact and compete with a longslide. If you're not going to use the same trigger group (I wouldn't) I'd also standardize your triggers. Avoid PELT for one, standard for another. I'm not sure I'd do the 320 X5 since the frame is different, but at least the trigger would be the same. Just my nickle's worth of opinion! EDIT: also if you can lower yourself to it... IDPA does have a compact carry division where at least you'd be on the same playing field.

I'm batting this around a lot. I work with people who don't carry or own anything but the P320. That said, I, myself have never had an an issue switching back and forth between different guns. I train on the P320 quite a bit and I am familiar with it. I can pick up a p320 and shoot it pretty well and then pick up a Beretta 92 and shoot it pretty well. I'm curious what persuaded you to stay with a single gun setup: was it more theory or actual findings? The reason I ask is that everyone I've spoken with who does it only does so off of theory alone, and I agree it's sound advice. I just wonder if there is any real world data to back it up or if it is just a sensical approach. I've also seen my qualification scores go up on the p320 when shooting my Glock 19 primarily, so I think at least for me I don't seem to have those mental roadblocks in regards to switching platforms that one would think should exist. I can see maybe picking up a few small nuances here and there if I only stick with one gun, but I can literally close my eyes and visualize firing a p320, complete with the grip angle, texture, trigger feel and break, etc. I can also vividly visualize shooting several other guns I own without issue. I certainly don't feel like I'd draw my P320 on duty and totally forget how the gun works or how that specific trigger feels compared to a double action, or sweep right through the trigger like it's a sa/da. That said, people have shot handguns at offenders thinking they are tasers, so I know in the right circumstances it is possible. I just wonder if I switch enough and train enough to overcome this logic. Not debating your suggestion at all, just curious if you found it to be true through hard data and testing. Also, I worked with the AMU guys who have spent the last billion years wringing out Beretta 92 guns. They picked up the P320's and although the scores fell initially, had no real growing pains to speak of with the M17, shooting them really well compared to how one would think they should have with the drastic differences between the platforms. There are several other documented cases of this, Mike Seeklander, Kyle Defoor, and others that can pick up student guns of various makes and lay waste to a field with them. Granted, they have a lot of trigger time...

    • @GunnerSouthPAS
      @GunnerSouthPAS 5 лет назад +1

I guess it depends on your goals and your commitment to training. I too can pickup any gun and shoot 'pretty good with it'. Pistol competency has some basic tenants than can be mastered on any platform (as you know and demonstrate). I think if you spend any significant amount of time behind a pistol you're going to achieve this level of competency. But my goals are centered around competition performance and so all of my data is centered around competition results. For my level of commitment and my schedule I'm unable to dedicate significant portions of time maintaining a high level of competency (in this case to be measured as competition results) across multiple firearms. The AMU guys are afforded significant training budgets and training time, but even they saw a dip when switching platforms. I'm trying to minimize or reduce any sort of dip in performance as those are easily measured in my weekly/monthly competitions. At the upper levels of competition the guys pick a platform and stick with it - fractions of seconds count. At the higher levels they are able to train for multiple guns (Seeklander, etc). For me and my own personal data I see the results in the amount of 'points down' (aka Charlie or Delta hits for USPSA) when I shoot another gun for my weekly IDPA matches. I'm also typically slower due to makeup shots or less than perfect reloads. All of this is measured in only a handful of seconds difference and all of this could be overcome by spending more time with training with that pistol... but that's my point there is an opportunity or performance cost that must be trained through before you're going to reach the same levels of performance on one gun vs another. So it's all 'what is good enough?' I'm working towards anything less than GM level shooting isn't good enough. It sounds like you're ok with high level of competency with multiple guns. I don't think one is better than the other necessarily but if your looking to pick 'one gun' I see less of a performance hit when I stick with the same family of guns and similar trigger setup.

Been watching your project one gun from the start. If you’re faster and more accurate with say the sig over the Glock why would that not also be your carry gun? By your own admission you shoot all these other guns better than the Glock so why rely on it for defensive carry? Just curious.

  • @range-randy8148

The great thing we have now in handguns is options. Carry guns, Defense guns, Range guns, Competition guns. Etc.
Glock 19 is a good Defense gun and a fair Range gun, but not a Competition gun. In short you will be at a disadvantage with any polymer framed handgun as a competition gun. Go with some weight with a good trigger and longer sight radius. Your CZ Shadow 2 would be my pick. Second would be the Beretta 92 Wilson Combat.

Good video as always. I have been following your One Gun Project along with my G19 Gen 5. I have been training and shooting this exclusively since May 2018. I dry fire daily and live fire weekly at my local range. I carry the G19 EDC. I did buy a new G17 Gen 5 and I find that my groups are more accurate with the G19 over my G17. Not really sure why. Could the longer, heavier slide be the issue? My G19 I have gotten significantly better with my shooting skills and I love shooting it. I’ve been shooting the snot out of my G19 since May so I’m thinking of buying a second G19 as a back up. What do you think? Not sure why I can’t shoot the G17 as well as the G19.

I buy used cars and drive them for 8-10 years. I don't have cable. I still have the 55 inch rear projection TV I bought in 2007 because the picture is still great. When I upgrade the phone I get whatever the previous generation flagship, never the newest thing. Add the savings from that up and it goes into the gun stuff.

Kyle Ryerson cut cost on other junk you buy. Don’t eat out as much and cook bulk meals that last a few days, don’t buy a lot of junk food, get into reloading, don’t get the best cable package, wash your car at home, don’t get expensive electronics, get into good habits that cut cost on utility bills, shop at old navy instead of Abercrombie and Fitch,....etc. Doing things like this alone will probably fund 2-3 guns a year

Kyle Ryerson I use to by several handguns every year a while back and lost a lot of money on trades and selling them after I realized I didn’t really want them as they were more of a impulse buy. Now I limit myself to 2 handguns a year. Gives it time for the impulse to go away and get the guns I really want on my bucket list. Since doing this I never have buyers remorse and end up with good guns I keep. This way also I can shoot more and build up accessories for the guns I have instead of shoving out a small fortune for the latest and greatest offerings that flood the market every year. Doing this for a few years and you’ll have all the handguns you want and none you don’t. I usually buy in the early summer and around December or January. I never buy a new model unless it’s been out for at least 6-8 months and the bugs are worked out or issues are well known. Just my system and it works pretty well for me.

Reloaded ammo that I didn't gauge before I used. The bullet profile isn't really friendly, especially with the slightly tighter throat on the Gen 5 barrels. Slide wouldn't go into battery. Two issues if I recall.
