I think as a Dark Souls and Elden Ring fan, S&S is probably a decent fit. But Asmon always uses a big 2-hander and dodge-rolls lol. He has been absolutely SLAYING it, beat basically every monster without failing... only carted once on Nergigante... granted the 1st charge got saved by the one damage reducing skill, so shoulda been 2 carts lol. Basically, I think he is better off with GS than most other weapons. Hammer doesn't have enough reach, and everything else is probably too complicated for him haha.
@@ManamuneAnada Yeah I saw that, the chat was raging, it was so funny too. I dont have as much time to watch right now, but I try to keep up. I am like 2 episodes behind.
I think Asmon would have fun with hammer. It seems he likes big numbers and big weapons. Although he would miss out on tail cuts, I'm sure he would love stunning the monsters. Also, bonk.
I agree, I feel like Hammer is a good weapon to recommend to a brand new player because the move set allows you to focus on learning “Monster Hunter” instead of learning the weapon. For instance, I’ve seen some people say Great Sword is a good beginner weapon because it’s simple. While the move set is simple, the actual way to play the weapon is not. Most people are not used to such a slow weapon where you’re walking speed with it out is a joke. Obviously any MH veteran will know that’s because you want to sheathe your weapon whenever you want to move. However a person brand new to MH will not know that because that’s not something most other games do. Hammer on the otherhand, the game plan is simple. You hit the head. That’s it. Walk around with it out, charged, uncharged, sheathed, whatever, doesn’t matter. The only thing you have to worry about is hit the head. That allows new players to “get” the game instead of wondering why their weapon feels slow or clunky.
@@EACru2002 It has some more mobility yes. But you also have to keep up the power buff at all times. The reach is incredible short. And the dmg is low outside of big bang. I was expecting more when I started with hammer. Some monsters were incredible frustrating.
Just a tip for new players...... used what you like and is "FUN" for you to play , the early you try a weapon the faster you will get used to it for hard fights, dont listen to people that speak in numbers and strategic those things youll get it later in the game, just go out there and enjoy the hunt
His first point was that it doesnt matter if u like to use bows, ur gonna not like getting the ammo for it. Let people say useful stuff, no need to repeat “do what u find fun” in every game, especially in videos where people actually click to learn from
@@xerenityapexlegends3940 so tell me what's the primary factor in a video game other than the gameplay to keep players playing the game, graphics?, story line?, flashy moves?.....non, is actually play and having fun while doing it, you cannot agreed with me cause you to have that mentality where everything is about numbers or choosing the most op spect, weapon, etc. just to beat the game immediately... so Nop I don't agreed with any of that like I said before and this goes to new players, don't listen to guys like this one I'm replying to ENJOY THE GAME , TAKE YOUR TIME AND HAVE FUN... is a simple concept that doesn't require strategic or a 30min video explaining you playing the game the wrong way fuck that
@@xerenityapexlegends3940 he is right whatever you think will be fun just play that better than thinking what is best weapon for "early mid or late" stages or how hard to master. so if you would ask this 5k hour player what was his first weapon, did he watch a guide video when he first starting the game, i think you'll get a different answer than what he is saying in the video
You can start with LS, you don't really need to counter as a beginner, and as you progress you'll get to feel the exponential power ups the LS provides when you learn the fights.
I still think SnS is a better choice for beginners. Both can be 'easy to pick up but hard to master'. But with LS it seems like there is too much of a wide gap between button mashing, maybe hitting the monster with occasional roundslash combo AND actually parrying attacks mid-combo what advanced LS players tend to rely on
I think one of the most common misconceptions for new players is when they see the lance they think "defensive" but it's one of if not the most offensive weapons because once you figure it out you almost never have to stop attacking.
Don't even try. People will always see the lance as the 'oh i'm such scared noob weapon'. But then when you join SoS, you are the one still hitting the monster while the rest of the team is holding their ears, running around like headless chicken to heal or getting caught by the most telegraphed mechanics. They will never understand.
I like to look at every weapon in Monster Hunter as being either hard to pick up or hard to master. Something like GS is hard to pick up, but as soon as you get the fundamentals of the weapon down and know you're kinda trying to predict where monsters are, you'll be fine in most hunts because you're using like 3 main combos at most. Comparatively smth like Lance or SNS can be picked up as they have decent general combos and solid defensive options for dodge or block. But these weapons are hard to master imo bc of how they're built. Lance is very heavy and relies on being able to block well, meaning you're trying to keep your offensive up time as high as possible. Sns basically NEEDS you to be up close to the monster, and you're reliant on constantly using items due to stamina use and relatively lower damage compared to smth like the GS meaning you're using buffs a lot. That's at least my take on it, I mostly use GS and SNS and have dabbled in some of the other weapons so I'm nowhere near as good with stuff like Longsword or Lance as I wish I was
Wierd reading this as a less then a week new player and picked lance and shield as my weapons. 😂 Worst part about what you are saying is, I played monster hunter new world upp to Barioth inn iceborn, and I have mostly hunted alone. But seeing pepole with 500+ mastery rank just fail and die, while me who don't really have that much experience seem to be doing just fine with the iceborn monster this far.
i love lance but i think this is not the very best option to start only because when you are new you dont have the shield jewel. you can potentially cart a couple of times before you learn wich attacks are unblockable on every monsters or untill you get this decoration XD not saying the weapon is bad tho when you have a good lance build the game become a joke lol nothing can damage you just speaking for new players :)
im an sns main, but so far, he's doing pretty well with a gs, i think its much more entertaining since the highs are really high especially when he sucessfully lands a tcs and when he misses it can still be very funny to watch. also, gs is a pretty iconic weapon for the series. but yeah, he should definitely try other weapons aswell, but most definitely not the ranged ones yet.
@@dominikb9202 He's doing so well while chat is spamming the correct way to play, it's a little bit embarrassing. I've definitely done the right things and done worse on some of the fights he has aced.
Many people portray gs as being the chad weapon, and it is hard to master, but at the same time it allows you to skip some of the mechanics cause you can kill a lot of monsters by just approaching, doing a basic charged attack at a random spot, sheathing, rolling away and repeating. Also it can reach the body of a tall monster and even the feet of a flying monster, while doing considerable damage even if the area is hard. I like how if you're using SnS and DB you gotta trip many monsters to be able to hit anywhere else but the feet, and if it's a flyer you're gonna have to learn how to clutch and take advantage of the environment to bring it down (flashbugs, stalactites, jumping from above and mounting), brings more depth and variety to the hunts.
This. Yeah, it's very hard to master. But in World I played almost all of the weapons pretty efficiently at some point and the Greatsword was by far the easiest one. You don't need to know much to deal major damage with it. Just the basic combo into TCS and how to charge. Most of the early monsters have pretty big openings that allow you to figure it out easily and even if you can't get the true charge off much, the fully charged regular slashes will still get you through the game with relative ease. Also, while I'd have preferred it if ASG didn't start with the GS... out of the 3 top recommendations, the GS is the best one to start with. Because unlike the DB and S&S, it comes with a lot of spectacular moments. He's a streamer, so big hype moments like that are important for him and draws a bigger audience.
I've always found it really difficult to suggest a weapon for newer players beyond telling them to just try everything a few times. While some weapons are a higher skill floor and are more difficult to learn as a beginner weapon, it's really going to end up taking hundreds if not thousands of hunts to truly master any of the weapons due to the amount of depth they all have, even the "simple" ones like SNS, lance and especially greatsword. I started with dual blades in freedom unite (I know, pretty much cock n' ball torture) before moving to hammer over the course of 3/3U and eventually insect glaive in 4U which I've since done something in the ballpark of 15-20,000 hunts with across 4U/GenU/Worldborne and Risebreak. The thing is I absolutely hated insect glaive when I first tried it, and honestly for the first 100-200 hunts with it, until it eventually clicked with me. I think its best to have a solid try with all weapons when you're first starting - eventually people will either maintain some level of efficiency with all weapons or drop that to gain mastery over a single one or two. The only ones I've never recommended to start are the bow guns because you just die all the time until you learn monster movements, whereas blademasters tend to be a lot less punishing.
My experience is quite different but it circles back to "I hated this weapon at first but now I'm loving it." I started in World, and couldn't find a main weapon for a long time. It was more linear: I started with GS, dropped it to go to Swaxe, went over to Long Sword for a bit, and then Charge Blade. I began to hate it when I hit a wall and then switched to Bow, which I mained for the rest of my playthrough. I got 4U in early 2023 and did the tried and true tactic of trying every weapon again to see what sticks. I got to Charge Blade again, I didn't do great with it but it was the only lead I had, so I went with it. Now after over 100 hours I realize how much of a fucking idiot I was. Seriously, how the hell did I reach Nergigante when I was that bad at the game?
start of world i saw DBS and knew the moment i saw them they were gonna me my main i tried insect glaive and chargebalde a few times but went back to DBS for me they were simply the most fun for me(i also was always obsessed with the idea of using 2 swords so when i saw them it was already decided) iceborne came and my opinion never changed. then rise came, played that liked them EVEN MORE and now im at a point where not playing them instantly feels werid and uncomfortable since they are all i use. i stopped playing iceborne when altararon and fatlis came out because i was at a point where i had to grind MR(the only grind i didn't enjoy) but decided asmon coming back made it a perfect time to play till i finish those fights then i will finally start sunbreak. and now that i have a pc i can finally go back and play the old ones. just a matter of which game to play first. any suugestions? also i have been using hammer every now and then and have been wanting to try bow so maybe that will happen in the future
Completely agree. I'm pretty new to the series, started with World and first used exclusively Insect Glaive. I started a new character later where I used Hammer. I chose both of those weapons because they seemed like they'd be fun judging by videos and playing around with them in the training arena. Right now however I've decided to just try all weapons a bit. Currently trying out Gunlance and I'm having a blast (pun intended) even though I'd never have thought that would be a weapon I'd find enjoyable. You really just have to try them all.
I started with HBG (the machine gun drew me in), the shield mod saved me so many times. Had fun using so many kind of ammo, shotguns, bomb, paralyze. Too bad the machine gun ammo have slow loadup and low dmg. Gonna try greatsword now cause the sword design looks so cool. I guess i just like the big stuff.
This is why ever new main game I try to learn 1-2 new weapons hh still top fa but mhwib decided to use gunlance which i hated b4 it was confusing. But on my gunlance run it just made sense and became fun 😅 tri was sns db couldnt under stand bow so dropped went hh late game, 3ds was ig and cb with hh. But mainly learn those two. Then cats .. just main cat most broken weapon in game fighting elder dragons as the cat was too much fun min maxed dps was insane. 4ever will love gore mag 4 teaching guard points Yet ib was gunlance n back to my love hh. Thoufh if i come back should i finally relearn cb? Or give bow and greatsword a chance??
I like GS as a beginner option because it basically teaches you everything you need about timing and positioning in a way that low commitment weapons like SnS don’t. Lance is probably my third most used weapon in the franchise but I think if I were to narrow down three beginner weapons I’d take your picks but swap Lance for Hammer. Hammer is the perfect in between of GS and SnS in my book. Heavy hits that require good judgement for effectiveness with great unsheathed mobility.
I don’t know about discarding IG, yes the Kinsect is weird but it’s the simplest weapon in terms of combos in the game (just mash right face button, literally never touch top face button lol) and jump/roll cancel windows make dodging easier. Generally I also think Hammer is easier than GS as a heavy weapon because you can walk whilst charging and don’t need to learn shoulder tackle timings. You can get away with a lot ignoring top face button combos.
I think hammer vs. gs is deceptive because new players are unlikely to understand hitzones. Hammer is a fully blunt weapon and wants to be hitting the head as much as possible, with significantly worse hitzone values on the rest of the body than for sever weapons in most situations. Hammer is a pretty easy weapon to use mechanically but your dps will be poop if you can't ever hit the head due to being afraid of being in front of the monster or just not understanding the monster moveset. GS can to an extent brute force a lot of its damage through shoulder tackle super armor + slingshot shortcut into TCS and being able to take any angle. You also don't need to land level 3 TCS's all the time to do good damage, if you're landing level 2 charges pretty often or getting a lot of 1st/2nd swing charges off you will probably be doing more damage than everyone else in the hunt most of the time, sometimes more than all 3 combined lol
yeah people see kinsect and get scared, minimum you need a fast kinsect to get red extract with and then spam tornado slashes at every opening theres downward thrust and getting a slow and powerful elemental kinsect but for beginners where you don't really optimize anything, above does enough, that said you also don'T engage with the game as much as other weapons so idk how much I recommend IG considering the combo you use over and over is basically perfect get in and out combo
I think most miss the fact that Asmon is a content creator. Also any weapon can be used to start with. Its the best way to learn to be proficient in said weapon class. I started over using only HBG and had zero ammo issues. Plus I feel like a larger part of players fail to have fun cause they want to speedrun like play after seeing how others just rip through content.
The most important thing of course is to use whatever you think is cool, as that is a better motivater than anything else lol. I never got into Monster Hunter until MH4U when Charge Blade came out and didn't look up any tutorials at the time. Sometimes a weapon just clicks with ya so it's always worth it for a new player to at least try them all out and see what sticks out to them.
i started and am still using the insect glaive, I didn't actually know that other weapons wern't as aerial until i did multiplayer :D its been so satisfying doing no hit runs and slashing the entire broadside of the monsters in the air it feels so cinematic to play :D
I think dual blades is great for beginners. Most of its attacks have low commitments so you can easily dodge anytime you need to, lets you get up close and personal having lots of action and little downtime. I kinda disagree with the greatsword for beginners, GS forces players to watch and learn monsters moves to be effective, and will punish being greedy, not optimal for beginners that just wants to get into action. Hammer I think is better for beginner than GS, cuz it has better mobility, less commitment, and can run around with weapon unsheathed ready to spring into action while learning the monsters moves. SnS I think is a lot for a beginner to take in, and takes a lot of skill to be effective at it. Sure SnS does everything, but I think that's the opposite of what a beginner should start with.
I tried SNS way back when I started MHW as well, since a lot of people recommended it as a starting weapon. The main issues I had with it was the very short range it had, so I'm always too close to the monster to see it wind up for attacks, and that it drained sharpness really fast and my attacks quickly started bouncing off. As a beginner back then, I couldn't really figure out how to address these problems with SNS, so I switched to Lance. Fell in love with the weapon and eventually learned how to use hops and guard dashes to a decent level and stuck with it.
As a fiver my first weapon was Dual blades and I have to agree it's the most beginner friendly weapon in MHW thanks to it's speed. Basically what OP said.
I started with DBs, went in on Bow, and then tried Lance. I fell in love immediately. Not letting a monster breathe is expertise now. I became a Lance main
I started with GS and had a pretty miserable time (comparatively, game is still fun). I was using the high damage to brute force most encounters and never really learned how to properly do the fights. Switched to Hammer and now having a way better time. Being able to walk around unsheathed is huge, as is being able to charge while moving. I think it's a much more dynamic weapon and I don't feel that lacking monster knowledge is nearly as big of a disadvantage.
The problem is SNS is that not his play style he would get bored with the game and drop it he is a high risk high reward player. he might like hammer better because it matches his high damage and better mobility
@@TheManyVoicesVAYep but again its his play style all you have to do is look at any of his souls games since that is how he is playing like he is a big weapon little to no defense outside of the dodge and try to out damage the boss
Just adding from my own experience as a beginner: If you're playing with friends who wanted you to pickup the game, go with Hammer. It honestly feels less stressful to have a very simple game plan (bonk the monster's head) and focus only on dodging. Not to mention it feels satisfying to use and be the person who is causing the monster to get KO'd.
he's made excellent progress with the greatsword from what I have seen, it's incredible to see him improve this much in a relatively short amount of time.
whaat-- i learned the game with greatsword, longsword, and dual blades. as a beginner, i couldnt keep track of all the patterns, but the few i did recognize, i wanted to capitalize on as much as possible. sns and lance made every fight feel long. what did you start with?
I started the game thanks to Asom and the first weapon I tried was Switch Axe. I go so use to using it that all the easy weapons felt weird for me but I do like Switch Axe and Longsword.
Glad I picked charge blade as my first weapon when I started mh. At first it was hellish but once I learned how to charge all my sauces, ooooo such a satisfying thing. Only downside is, if you start with a charge blade and master it, you will not want to use other weapons. Other weapons feel dumb.
I 100% agree with this. I started horn, switch axe, long sword. I thought the charge blade would be stupid bc shields are for beta males. I was completely wrong lol it's amazing and does big numbas with both sword and shield charged and released at once. So satisfying
As someone who started with bow (and I'm still not super experienced), I don't find it a bad starting weapon at all. - You don't have to farm coating, you have infinite ammo. (although actively using coatings will speed things up, of course. But you also have close range coating to fall back on). - It teaches you to study the monsters you're hunting because you really want to be targeting their weaknesses with the bow (both in terms of physical body locations, and actual elemental weaknesses). Since if you don't you will deal close to 0 damage (Literally hit Barioth for 1-4 damage the first time I fought him lol. Switched around my build for him and started dealing 100's per shot). But it's for the type of player that likes to think about their build and the fights. Not for the type of person that just wants to go unga bunga big sword damage (which is Asmon). Basically the thinking man's weapon.
You know what’s funny is i use bow for the complete opposite reason, you dash and shoot on repeat, without much need to learn attacks at all since you’d ideally be a good distant away, it’s my safe unga bunga weapon
I know I'm late. Literally just got into monster hunter. Got the complete world package for 20 EUR! I started with longsword, as I like having the extra reach compared to sns, especially as positioning, direction and animation locks are tough to get a feel for early. Considered going bow instead tho, I like the idea of coatings as an answer to specific problems. But as I play mainly solo, I fear the agro on me will hamper my options. I have access to both controller and mouse, currently changing between both to find my preference. Any thoughts or tips?
@@Zepulchure I played Solo, if that helps. Bow has all the tools to keep mobile and dancing around the monster. As long as you're willing to change weapon to match the monster you're hunting, it is very strong. Mostly to match their elemental weaknesses. Mouse works fine with bow as well (it's what I used, never used controller).
hi naota, ive recently gotten into MHW and ive loved the entire journey and im a little over 200 hours with the greatsword, and all of the story was solo. ive only done guiding lands coop. ive killed aletreon solo as well (both the nerfed and real aletreon). and i am 110+ MR. however i cant tell if its just burnout, but ive gotten to a point where i feel like ive regressed somehow in my ability to use the greatsword. i also feel a bit bored of the greatsword as well, but i at least want to get a fatalis solo kill before i try something else or just taking a break entirely and come back refreshed. id like some sort of input into what i should do, although i feel like taking a break would be an obvious choice as i have been playing pretty hardcore and racked up those 200 hours very fast. im also bored and tired of farming guiding lands for augments. (sorry for the wall of text) also one more thing, should i do a new playthrough to learn a new weapon and return to my main character, or just pick up the weapon and go hunt.
1. Play a different MH game, different weapon 2. Do craft Fatalis weapon for alt weapon and experiment / learn typical builds with said alt weapon. I wouldn't recommend starting a new save unless you can get to Iceborne fast.
@@naota909 thanks for the response, I think I’m gunna keep giving Fatalis a crack until I got it down, and with the mats I’ll craft alt weapons. I’ll try out Rise when Im done with World for a bit :)
LS beginner struggles are so true! Until i reached about 800 hunts w/longsword, it toom me extra long to learn some bosses like nergi, velkhana, rajang in particular, learning their move set almosy competley in order to pull of ISs, nasty time, but 1200 hunts now and safe to say im a (near) complete master at longsword, its an incredible weapon, just gotta stick to the grind when your new
Saying to not use switch axe as a new player hurts my soul. I was new to series with world and 100% started Swaglicious Axe and was super happy even when it was kinda low tier in base world.
Started with charge blade after trying them all because I thought it had the best play style for me. Didn’t take me very long at all to learn it’s just about watching videos, knowing the combos and how to charge phials then you’re good to go. 10/10 recommend for beginners
I disagree. To use CB effectively you have to learn guard pointing for counter opportunities using the SAED, how to evade monster attacks with certain combos instead of rolling so you simultaneously get charges etc. It is a really hard and complex weapon mechanically. Of course you can use any weapon with very limited basic understanding but CB just isn’t going to be very effective if you do. Edit: The base game and even the main story of Iceborne are easy enough to beat for anyone with any weapon, no matter if he knows what he is doing or he doesn’t. Fatalis, Alatreon and Raging Brachydios however are the monsters where you really need a solid plan and understanding of your weapon to succeed (talking solo here).
I've always been an insect glaive player throughout my 2 main experiences playing world/iceborne (the only MH game I've played btw) Having come back to the game and remembering how much I enjoyed it, I wanted to try some other weapons. I've dabbled in SA, CB, and LS in the past but never stuck with any of them. This time, I've been giving DB and Bow a try, but I find DB is very restricted against taller monsters and bow is growing on me but still a pain to manage stamina/coating and learn my openings. Are there any other weapons I haven't used people would recommend that an IG user might like?
I started with lbg, but I’m also the kind of player who goes on a 5 hour expedition grabbing everything with the master gatherer skill, so farming ammo wasn’t a big issue. Plus, I kept running the Kestodon event quest for daily bounties, grabbed every bullet in the box, then killed them all with wyvernblast, melee attacks, and rf normal 1.
Im a new player. I played the whole main quest and iceborne with lance. Was fun but took me over 25 minutes to kill every monster. Im using GS my second time around. I get hit a lot but I feel like Im learning more and faster because I have to think when to attack by learning monsters movements and not get greedy.
I think the best option is to have 2 main weapons, or 1 main weapon and a secondary one to kill niche monsters. I mained Gunlance in Generation Ultimate but some monsters were too much for me and that slow weapon (keep in mind that was my first MH), so I choosed Insect Glaive as the secondary weapon. I have soloed MHGU with that combination. When going to Iceborne, I choosed Switch Axe, but this time purely for fun.
Bruh i started with LS as beginner, I found it very easy compared to other weapons, I have about maybe 700 hour all together including rise. What other weapons ya recommend i should try next?
@@naota909 sorry but i am unfamiliar with LNC? Is that lance? Or gun lance? But been trying out GS, SA and lance, I am quite fond of HH I mainly play it during 4 man com hunts
I only have 3k hours in MH, started with 3 Ultimate. My tipp: use whatever weapon you want and don't let people tell you otherwise because of "numbers".
But also its very important to say that if you force yourself into a weapon you don't enjoy you will probably not want to play for very long. So if you especially are drawn to a certain type of weapon, just practice like crazy with it and thr reward will feel even better.
If he has to press more than 2 buttons then it confuses him and it feels like it took him 20 hours to figure out that the tackle exists and he still doesnt know that the slinger exists after like 100 hours
I think hammer is better to start with for new players versus GS. Has quicker bonks, but also has big wind ups, and once you master those GS becomes more viable. Not a world player though, only played it for 200ish hours before going back to Generations Uktimate
If anyone has not figured out charge blade yet. Its difficult yes. But its in ALOT of the metas for highest dps in later endgame builds. The thing is like ammo. You are allowed to slash until it fills then you use the energy stored from attacking to do hig damage numbers. I didnt knoe whag the hell i was using or how but i eventually literally started this game from training using charge blade. It just looked cool and i stuck with it. On monster hunter world my overall hunts are about 90 percent or nore of all my bunts were charge blade. The mechanic of it combining was just so cool to me so i used it and mastered it because it was a challenge.
I am a IG main and as someone who started this game with that weapon I have to agree on how technical and advanced that weapon can be for beginner players at the start. Takes a lot of set up and timing on attacks with your buffs. GS imo would be a good starter wep 🙂
you can buy ammo pretty early the question is will you think to do it plus after crafting a weapon not all parts are going to be used for awhile so you could easily get hundreds to maybe thousands of ammo pretty early
as a GS enjoyer myself, i find GS a good newbie weapon and a bad newbie weapon, good in that it teaches you how to play monster hunter if ur smart enough to pick up on the hints the GS drops, but also bad because u can almost never get TCS off unless u somehow down the monster when you are new
GS has 2 main defensive options. Dodge, and Tackle. There's also guard but really who does that. Tackle for GS is a super armor state as well as blunt damage similar to Lance Shield Advance. You can use it mid charge which makes it extremely flexible. Only drawback is that you will receive some some damage and stun. But you can easily negate that with stun resistance. Sns also really doesn't use guard. It's more dodging, sprinting, and back hopping. Guard is for last resort/panic button kinda thing. In iceborne, Sns can also use the slinger burst which can interrupt monsters. DB also receives slinger burst + evade. They are extremely good offense/defense tools.
GS has more defensive options than like half the other weapons. It's got a decent dodge, sheathes quickly for such a slow weapon, it can block, and the tackle has super armor and some damage reduction. Also, SnS is probably the most complicated weapon in the game to use effectively.
SnS might be better to do well with early but GS forces you to actually learn how to play the game as you have to be more deliberate with every weapon swing as opposed to just wildly flailing close to your target which is a pitfall a new player might fall into using a faster weapon.
Am I the only one of the few players who actually don't suffer from getting ammo for Bowguns early game? Cause I farm along with other consumables them to an extent till it increases further down the game, cause eventually you will have to farm for stuff early on in the game anyway and Bowgun ammo is just a side quest for it
I feel like, GS and Dual Blades are a good choice, since he plays with Keyboard, so there is pretty much only 2 Buttons to attack and the Combos can get really difficult (with other weapons) when you have to press R or T instead, or Mousebutton 5 if you even have that button.
When I FIRST got into MH with 4, I went Swaxe. It was the only thing I could wrap my head around because I was SO overwhelmed with how hard the game was. I liked that sword mode ignored the sharpness bouncing off of monsters, I liked that I was mobile in axe form. I never even gave Sword shield the time of day cuz why am I fighting big monsters with a toothpick?
First time I played through the base game was on a roommate's PS4 and I used Insect Glaive - solo, except for Xeno because I couldn't defeat it alone (I don't really remember why anymore). The second time on PC I tried out Charge Blade and never looked back.
I'm a switch axe fan. i think it is really hard to master, so you never run out of energy to switch between axe and sword mode for a nice fluint combat
I would say long sword is a pretty easy weapon to start With even without the counter u can do insane damage and the long sword is also pretty easy to understand
Hammer is the much easier and more forgiving sibling of the Greatsword. The increased mobility and faster attacks make a massive difference when you’re beginning. Greatsword is for when you’ve decided that not even the Hammer hits hard enough for you. And you *must* learn the monster or you will literally double your hunt times.
I picked up hunting horn as my starter weapon. Learned about widespread and horn maestro, and that’s how my character becomes the Saxo hunter that’s keeping everyone alive.
as someone who started with insect glaive and then used the longsword, nah, insect glaive its pretty good and easy to use at the start, just watch a small guide and u will see that mostly its; get the buffs, the pretty easy infinite combo , how to finish it and the 3 attacks flying
SnS is a weapon type that can do a lot of things thanks to it being able to do both blunt AND sever attacks. My personal favourite is to spam dodge rolls so I can get back to back jump attacks and dive back down with the shield bash. Is it effective? No. Is it fun? Heck yeah!
I committed myself to learning every weapon ever since I started playing my first MH game back in tri. Given about 2K hours in world I’d say you’re pretty much right. My overall fav weapons are SnS, LS and Bow but I love all of em to some degree. For beginning a monster Hunter game for the first time I actually think a weapon that doesn’t have the option to guard well. Since blocking will hinder your knowledge of monster attack timings and the dodge roll timing.
I find that playing lance in certain match ups to see when the attacks actually hit the shield helps me to learn dodge timings (without dying when i mess up)
Started with rise (technically i started wit MH1, hated it, and it took until Rise for a friend to get me back into it) and I chose IG out of the gate. I didn't start looking at other weapons until aobut 300 hours of play and it.... was difficult at first. I realized i was using my pogo stick as a crutch to evade monster mechanics, that i had no idea what attacks looked like from the ground, no clue what could be guarded etc. I think a very natural thing for a brand new player to do with IG is to gravitate to aerial and ignore ground combat as much as they can, which is what i was doing for a lot of my time as IG. Branching into a melee weapon has helped my IG play a lot, both in understanding the monster and applying that to a much better blend of ground an aerial, and understanding what is important to my teammates when i play IG with them.
I think longsword and insect glaive are great for beginners not hard to learn once you learn it’ll be cake CB on the other hand requires a lot of time and know what you’re doing otherwise ur gonna be hitting a brick wall with a butter knife
I started as a Longsword main when I picked up MHW for the first time, but eventually switched to Insect Glaive because I like its mobility and easy mounting. I've recently picked up Charge Blade after avoiding it for so long, and am pleased to find out that its playstyle really clicks with me. Insect Glaive prepared me for the idea of maintaining Charge Blade's buffs, and it's become second nature to buff/buff/burst with it. I would push back a little on the idea of Bow not being suited for beginners. It doesn't require ammo, and the unlimited-use Close Range Coat is sufficient for early game before you want to start farming materials for the stronger coatings. It's the only ranged weapon I enjoy.
as a mh vet glance is so fun for even newer player safe but, shapness drops quick if you spam your shells. sns still best new player friendly weapon u can even use items with it out.
I mained a new weapon every time a new monster hunter went out since the psp. And after finally maining GS in world in PS3 then SnS in PC, i personally find the GS easier than the SnS. The reach of the GS as well as its nature of being unsheathed most of the time just makes the player completely avoid any danger from the immediate vicinity. Sns on the other hand may be easier to control, but benefits more on advanced gameplay and game knowledge, from terrain, quick item usage and i-framing backhops.
I started with long sword then switched to lance. In my opinion if we consider defence, offence and mobility lance will comes on top,it just need guard level 3 otherwise chip damage will be very high.
I started with Hunting Horn in Rise(first MH for me) then started with it in world. Holy hell it was a transition, but once I got used to the playstyle I got settled in quickly.
lance actually plays more like SnS than GL. GL plays more like an opportunist weapon (espeacially normal shelling) like GS and hammer. Lance is basically a SnS but with lower mobility/saefty when it comes to dodging, disengaging and sheathing, but better mobility when it comes to engaging and a better shiel (since it has counters). The fact That Lance's and GL's shields are the "best" in terms of guard matters rather little, since without the guard skill they still suck. What makes Lance's shield so good are the counters (it's even more counter focused than LS at least in MHW)
Hammer is the easiest and best to learn the game, simple yet effective. You charge attacks while running and punish openings, resulting into KO's for free damage. Play style that rewards player positioning and match up knowledge.
I think the great sword is easy to learn but difficult to master, because is very slow and you have to have knowledge of the monsters movement, I would pick instead the hammer, is a strong weapon and is a kinda hit and run, and you can get everything wrong and still doing great
Blocking with GS is also pretty good. I'd say GS is pretty easy for defence. I'd even go further as to say it's more agile than most melee weapons here simply because of the draw and sheath gameplay that makes it so you never fully commit, whilst other weapons you're usually locked in an elaborate animation. I also disagree with insect glaive. I think it's actually pretty friendly as long as you understand it's buff mechanics which isn't too complicated. It's very anecdotal but I found that, especially in low rank to high rank, some encounters where I had trouble with flying monsters, insect glaive was the most reliable for solo play. Heck, insect glaive has carried me through a lot of hard quests. Just having the option of vertical and aerial mobility invalidates most monster attacks, and whilst you're evading, you're also attacking. There's almost no downtime until your stamina depletion.
MHW is my first MH game and I started with Switch Axe and I had a full reset (3 carts) only against Raging Brachydios so far. I am a Dark Souls veteran tho so that might've made it easier for me.
I agree with your assessment, however I think Longsword and Bow are both a lot easier than you indicated. Just upgrading your bow like any other weapon ignoring element and coatings will get you through the game, and just understanding spirit gauge will do the same on LS. You can make it into high rank with just the Tobi bow, If you want to totally ignores the defender raw bow. RE SNS: coming from other games (like Souls) having access to cancels and I frames via rolling is very intuitive, additionally being able to use items without sheathing is a pretty big boon to players that will be using a lot of items. after watching his gameplay he struggles with capitalizing on openings so a low commitment weapon will serve him better than a slower methodical weapon. It might not be as flashy or give the same "Moments of Glory" but I think SNS is probably the best starting place for most players new to the series.
I played every weapons in this game (solo) so here's MY top hardest weapons in the game based on how easy it is to beat the game (solo) with it as a beginner (#1 is the hardest #14 is the easiest): #1 Sword and Shield #2 Heavy Bowgun #3 Light bowgun #4 Hunting Horn #5 Lance #6 Switch axe #7 Charge Blade #8 Insect Glave #9 Gunlance #10 Hammer #11 Dual blade #12 Bow #13 Greatsword #14 Long sword Greatsword and Long sword, despite being hard to fully master, are REALLY beginner friendly due to their high mobility, (with greatsword for exemple, your weapon is almost never draw, so you're always very fast so it's easier to learn the monster moveset, and the poke cancel just allows you to do a lot of mistakes). Greatsword and Long sword are the best weapons to learn the game atleast in my opinion.
theres no equal to nailing that charged up greatsword hit tho.. omg. i started and mained GS for a couple hundred hours on MHW and i started a new save with gunlance and litteraly kiled monsters 2-3x faster lol. it was so much more "easy" to use and has alot of options. but nothing felt better than GS for me :P not sure what i will main in Wilds yet.
I started the game and am still using the insect glaive and it’s absolutely amazing it took me a while to figure out how to correctly use kinsect though I have 13hrs as of now
to be fair there is multiple way to play charge blade, like a great sword or like a sword and shield or both thanks to all of is combo. i love this weapon
I actually think hunting horn is very good for beginning the game, because songs aside it only has the most fundamental mechanics of the game: ypur only defensive maneuver is the regular dodge, and all your attacks are very "normal", no counters, no charges, no elaborate combos, so once buffing is out of the way it's the weapon that allows you to focus the most on the monster imo
you forget that asmon played Arms/Fury warrior for most of his life... only weapons he will use is GS, Switch Axe and Hammer, even Long Sword is probably to "small" for him.
I started playing whit long sword it was a pain in the beginning but the more i went in expedition and hunting monster i learned the counter attacks and the monster movements to nail those counter attacks its amazing to play im on 56 hours of game already
I think switch axe is simpler than Greatsword to be honest. The moveset is more complicated than greatsword, but once you know the combos they're pretty applicable and fluid on every monster. Greatsword on the other hand, to pump out massive damage is morel about knowing the monster you're fighting and the opportunity windows for getting those big hits in. Basically, I can know switch axe fully and none of the monsters and perform quite well. I can know greatsword fully and none of the monsters and I'll get destroyed.
I switched through all weapons throughout my experiences with Monster Hunter (starting at Freedom Unite) and I sticked to using Greatsword because it's simple yet complex. Fun yet monotonous, punishing yet rewarding. If I go on multiplayer, I'd like to pick bow and be some sort of group commander and coordinator. I have to say though, I wasn't always great with greatsword, it takes practice and love for the weapon. Asmon's slowly getting there. "Playing the game with an iron focus" is vastly different than "Streaming the game for an audience as entertainment".

I think Asmon would have fun with hammer. It seems he likes big numbers and big weapons. Although he would miss out on tail cuts, I'm sure he would love stunning the monsters. Also, bonk.
I started with the hammer and I really miss cutting tail. Also the dmg isnt really that high if you cant find openings for the full big bang.
@@dominikb9202 I used to capture monsters in order to get tails. With the hammer you make openings. :D
@@MrDeni23n True but fights like viper kadachi are so much easier when you can cut the tail.
This right here. Screw what others say play the game the way you want to play it.

You can start with LS, you don't really need to counter as a beginner, and as you progress you'll get to feel the exponential power ups the LS provides when you learn the fights.
I still think SnS is a better choice for beginners. Both can be 'easy to pick up but hard to master'. But with LS it seems like there is too much of a wide gap between button mashing, maybe hitting the monster with occasional roundslash combo AND actually parrying attacks mid-combo what advanced LS players tend to rely on
Long Sword was the best weapon for beginner back then
Perfect balanced.
The counter ruined imo
Why the hell would adding a move ruin it when it doesn't affect the other moves?
Worst part about what you are saying is, I played monster hunter new world upp to Barioth inn iceborn, and I have mostly hunted alone. But seeing pepole with 500+ mastery rank just fail and die, while me who don't really have that much experience seem to be doing just fine with the iceborn monster this far.
@@trueredpanda1538 wll its tthe second easiest mh game ever
For me it's more boring, but it's the fact it's so defensive. I mean, it is the "poke poke poke....poke poke poke" weapon
tbh, I am blown away Asmon didn't spin to win with the Hammer. Seemed like it fits his playstyle in every other game.
Thank you for the love and appreciation you gave to lance in this video. As a lance main, I feel validated.
I see you man.
i love lance but i think this is not the very best option to start only because when you are new you dont have the shield jewel. you can potentially cart a couple of times before you learn wich attacks are unblockable on every monsters or untill you get this decoration XD not saying the weapon is bad tho when you have a good lance build the game become a joke lol nothing can damage you just speaking for new players :)

im an sns main, but so far, he's doing pretty well with a gs, i think its much more entertaining since the highs are really high especially when he sucessfully lands a tcs and when he misses it can still be very funny to watch. also, gs is a pretty iconic weapon for the series. but yeah, he should definitely try other weapons aswell, but most definitely not the ranged ones yet.
He is doing very well. Without even using tackle/claw-tenderize or shoot and then tcs. Which is just the coolest combo ever.

The best recommandation for every player is, play what you like and what intressts you the most.
SWAXE
or great sword
GS difficulty is overrated, its easy to use and extremely effective, perfect noob weapon.
The strength of SnS is that it can adapt to a flying monster (ie flash, shoryuken claw, etc) very quickly, unlike something like DB.
It's the same for dark souls (3). You just ignore any trash mobs, since they flinch on every attack and bosses just get chunked.
I missed the sns oil up days
My experience is quite different but it circles back to "I hated this weapon at first but now I'm loving it."
I started in World, and couldn't find a main weapon for a long time.
4ever will love gore mag 4 teaching guard points
Yet ib was gunlance n back to my love hh.
You also don't need to land level 3 TCS's all the time to do good damage, if you're landing level 2 charges pretty often or getting a lot of 1st/2nd swing charges off you will probably be doing more damage than everyone else in the hunt most of the time, sometimes more than all 3 combined lol
yeah people see kinsect and get scared, minimum you need a fast kinsect to get red extract with and then spam tornado slashes at every opening
theres downward thrust and getting a slow and powerful elemental kinsect but for beginners where you don't really optimize anything, above does enough, that said you also don'T engage with the game as much as other weapons so idk how much I recommend IG considering the combo you use over and over is basically perfect get in and out combo
What does being a content creator have to do with all of this?
He used the greatsword till the end of Iceborne and still doesn't know how to use the TCS shortcut. That pissed me off so freaking much.
The most important thing of course is to use whatever you think is cool, as that is a better motivater than anything else lol. I never got into Monster Hunter until MH4U when Charge Blade came out and didn't look up any tutorials at the time. Sometimes a weapon just clicks with ya so it's always worth it for a new player to at least try them all out and see what sticks out to them.
beginners should just try them all out and find the one with the gameplan they like the most thats it
i started and am still using the insect glaive, I didn't actually know that other weapons wern't as aerial until i did multiplayer :D its been so satisfying doing no hit runs and slashing the entire broadside of the monsters in the air it feels so cinematic to play
:D
Sure SnS does everything, but I think that's the opposite of what a beginner should start with.
quality comment right here
I tried SNS way back when I started MHW as well, since a lot of people recommended it as a starting weapon.
All u need is dodge rolls. Tbh he would probably miss more with hammer lmao. Reach is so short.

Sword and shield. But for some bigger monsters like brute wyverns you better pick up something with bigger reach
@@stone2360 it's numbers can hang with the big bonk weapons which is another reason it's great
As someone who started with bow (and I'm still not super experienced), I don't find it a bad starting weapon at all.
(sorry for the wall of text)
also one more thing, should i do a new playthrough to learn a new weapon and return to my main character, or just pick up the weapon and go hunt.
1. Play a different MH game, different weapon
I’ll try out Rise when Im done with World for a bit :)
how is insect glaive not a begginer friendly weapon? its pretty easy to use imo
The combos themselves are pretty straightforward. It's maintaining the uptime via its kinsect buffs that can be a pain in the ass for newer players.
its aerial mobility can give you bad habits too. unless you never play any other weapon of course
Switch axe was my first weapon as well and have no problem on learning it, it definitely really fun tu play especially in sunbreak
Switchaxe supremacy!!
I've always been an insect glaive player throughout my 2 main experiences playing world/iceborne (the only MH game I've played btw)
Having come back to the game and remembering how much I enjoyed it, I wanted to try some other weapons.
DB is not that of a bad matchup against taller monsters... if you can find a slope to slide on ofc :)
lance probably, or SnS
Probably 1 of the Classic 3 trinity GS SnS LNC
@@naota909 sorry but i am unfamiliar with LNC? Is that lance? Or gun lance?
But been trying out GS, SA and lance, I am quite fond of HH I mainly play it during 4 man com hunts
Somehow i keep trying every damn weapon but i always end up picking my GS again...
I only have 3k hours in MH, started with 3 Ultimate.
My tipp: use whatever weapon you want and don't let people tell you otherwise because of "numbers".
Let him play the weapon he likes more?
Is this video forcing him to change?
But also its very important to say that if you force yourself into a weapon you don't enjoy you will probably not want to play for very long. So if you especially are drawn to a certain type of weapon, just practice like crazy with it and thr reward will feel even better.
but u can block with greatsword tho u just loose the sharpness
If he has to press more than 2 buttons then it confuses him and it feels like it took him 20 hours to figure out that the tackle exists and he still doesnt know that the slinger exists after like 100 hours
Is the long sword op or does it justfeel that way because of my freedom unite experience ?
it’s definitely good and a beginner friendly weapon
It good, but when it comes to DPS its currently only on 5th place at best in Sunbreak.
yeah gs only defensive option is dodging if you ignore shoulder bash and the very niche but still exists block button
GS imo would be a good starter wep 🙂
you can buy ammo pretty early the question is will you think to do it plus after crafting a weapon not all parts are going to be used for awhile so you could easily get hundreds to maybe thousands of ammo pretty early
as a GS enjoyer myself, i find GS a good newbie weapon and a bad newbie weapon, good in that it teaches you how to play monster hunter if ur smart enough to pick up on the hints the GS drops, but also bad because u can almost never get TCS off unless u somehow down the monster when you are new
"With the GreatSword you shall not master the weapon, but the monster's movesets." -Some GS main from 10 years ago probably
I rarely use GS guard, but it's a nice alternative depending on the situation
Two words: Fatalis Cone.
@@jonconnor0729 wait, can you block it?
Gs block is lowkey good
Gs block is lowkey good
GS has more defensive options than like half the other weapons.
I've never used sword and shield because the sword clips through the shield when idle. Hate that, can't unsee it
When I FIRST got into MH with 4, I went Swaxe.
The credit I’m getting as a lance main is so welcome, im glad that someone gave it the spotlight its earned
I picked up hunting horn as my starter weapon. Learned about widespread and horn maestro, and that’s how my character becomes the Saxo hunter that’s keeping everyone alive.
lol when I started with glaive and great sword right out the gate on keyboard. I didn’t know what the heck was going on
as someone who started with insect glaive and then used the longsword, nah, insect glaive its pretty good and easy to use at the start, just watch a small guide and u will see that mostly its; get the buffs, the pretty easy infinite combo , how to finish it and the 3 attacks flying
SnS is a weapon type that can do a lot of things thanks to it being able to do both blunt AND sever attacks. My personal favourite is to spam dodge rolls so I can get back to back jump attacks and dive back down with the shield bash. Is it effective? No. Is it fun? Heck yeah!
I feel so weird now... the two weapons he said not to start with were the two weapons I started with and continue to use..... >.>
I find that playing lance in certain match ups to see when the attacks actually hit the shield helps me to learn dodge timings (without dying when i mess up)
When I first started years ago I mistakenly took on the charge blade as my weapon. I stubbornly didn’t swap and I’m glad I didn’t
LBG is a fine starter weapon. Normal 2 Rapid Fire is cheap even early in the game and can get things done fairly well.
In my opinion if we consider defence, offence and mobility lance will comes on top,it just need guard level 3 otherwise chip damage will be very high.
ok, funny thing is I started with bow and quickly switched to ls, so no wonder I was struggling for a while
I started with Hunting Horn in Rise(first MH for me) then started with it in world.
I think the great sword is easy to learn but difficult to master, because is very slow and you have to have knowledge of the monsters movement, I would pick instead the hammer, is a strong weapon and is a kinda hit and run, and you can get everything wrong and still doing great
Me personally I think the hammer is the best for beginners because of the raw damage and stuns you can do just bye doing one combo
"The thing about Great Sword is...the only defensive options is just dodging." - Huh?! What about Guard and Tackle? Oô
And the literal block button.
@@cobra29935 That’s Guard. 😉
@marcomcfly9489 ah I don't know why I didn't pick up on that when I posted the comment, seems kind of obvious 😅
Honestly I love greatsword and hammer is sooo fun so when wilds releases I'll be maining both lol
I played every weapons in this game (solo) so here's MY top hardest weapons in the game based on how easy it is to beat the game (solo) with it as a beginner (#1 is the hardest #14 is the easiest):
#1 Sword and Shield
#2 Heavy Bowgun
#3 Light bowgun
#4 Hunting Horn
#5 Lance
#6 Switch axe
#7 Charge Blade
#8 Insect Glave
#9 Gunlance
#10 Hammer
#11 Dual blade
#12 Bow
#13 Greatsword
#14 Long sword
Greatsword and Long sword, despite being hard to fully master, are REALLY beginner friendly due to their high mobility, (with greatsword for exemple, your weapon is almost never draw, so you're always very fast so it's easier to learn the monster moveset, and the poke cancel just allows you to do a lot of mistakes).
I started the game and am still using the insect glaive and it’s absolutely amazing it took me a while to figure out how to correctly use kinsect though I have 13hrs as of now
I pick the Insect Glaive in every new Monster Hunter as my first weapon and keep it until the endgame. It's such a fun weapon.
I personally started with Charge Blade and stayed on Charge Blade :) I feel like Capcom specifically designed that weapon with me in mind.
to be fair there is multiple way to play charge blade, like a great sword or like a sword and shield or both thanks to all of is combo. i love this weapon
He can block with GS too... it's not optimal, but it's still very beginner friendly.
Im sorry but im very confused because you're just putting icons on a white background. Kind hard to tell what you're ranking them for beginners 😅
Asmongold was never going to pick anything other than GS, but I agree SnS should be the default weapon for new players.
