Whoever changed the opening should have recut the entire film. I am hooked within minutes. Its a period piece?....no its time travel?...no its a western?...no its sci fi?.....The plot is closer to the truth than many realize. Its a masterpiece.
I like the film. Having read the series as a teenager, the film was very close to the description in the books. No doubt there are differences but it was very close. I think they did a good job and was glad to see it. I'm still waiting for Rendezvous with Rama to be brought to the screen.
This intro reminds me a lot of the early 80s film version of Dune. They should have kept this, it would have appealed heavily to older fans of Sci-Fi, which was the target audience of the original books anyway.
This is a good movie, the problem is it came too late. It feels to those new to the story to be derivative and done before, nothing new. The problem of course being that everyone else took things form this book to make their movies.
I disagree. This sets a more somber tone for the story. And who knows what else Disney ordered differently? We would need a director's cut to find out. And I agree, this was NOT a bad film. Stanton did what others had failed at for years-bring John Carter and the world of Barsoom to the screen.
While this would of made for a poor opening scene It's not half bad Instead it would of made a better introduction scene to Dajah thoris It gives us all we need to know about her and the state of mars It shows off her intelligences and her strong personality And it give the citizens of helium some character Time wise, set after john meets the Tharks But before the airships battle obviously
It's ok, but it doesn't move the dial enough to improve anything. I agree with the producers also that it would have confused the storyline established elsewhere in the film. Excellent share.
Good thing this was not the opening! It was NOT a bad film (not saying it was great, but well worth a watch) -- and this would have jumbled up what was a much stronger beginning.
Nope. This isn't any closer to the original novels than the rest of the movie. Plus the obvious Death Valley/Southwest landscape standing in for Mars, as has been done since Rocketship XM or maybe Flash Gordon. This wouldn't have saved John Carter.

For some reason the Disney films that didn't work turn out to be my favorites. Tron. Tron 2. John Carter and Tomorrowland.
Such a shame that a franchise didn't Bloom 😏😒😒🙄

Couldn't say it better.
@D Wilson Uh, what is “catholism”?
@D Wilson The thing that’s blocking and muting you.
While this wasn't the best intro to the story, the real mistake was NOT calling the movie The Princess of Mars....

too confusing for children educated by 60 years of progressive control of primary and secondary education.
Maybe more adaptations in future?

I like the idea of Deja opening the film, however, it does feel a bit too much like the opening of David Lynch's Dune in the first minute.
Fascinating ❤
I never heard of This Book of " John Carter ," and I was born in 1964 in near State Library .

THE BARSOOM 《 BOSOM ❤》
This film would go nicely with Total Recall.
Zodanga was not a crawling city 😖
Yes, you're right. Zodanga is like any other barsoomian city. That made John Carter look like a Mortal Engines ripoff...
For a moment I thought it was Rome!
I'm still waiting for Cater2
Finding Nemo Wall-e Meet John Carter
The Thern really do exist

3:54 Green screen at the background?
That scene has its CGI work clearly unfinished
Baalbec hollandbec , enki ?Blond planet, wrong layer stuff.
Grabe ang kslaban sb duha ang kamot
The film should've started on earth and taken us to Mars from the perspective of John Carter's journey.
Technically it did.
I like the opening, its very Burroughsian
Deleted scene
This is not the begining
Was that Caesar??
Yes, And Antony!
