Whoever changed the opening should have recut the entire film. I am hooked within minutes. Its a period piece?....no its time travel?...no its a western?...no its sci fi?.....The plot is closer to the truth than many realize. Its a masterpiece.
This is a good movie, the problem is it came too late. It feels to those new to the story to be derivative and done before, nothing new. The problem of course being that everyone else took things form this book to make their movies.
I like the film. Having read the series as a teenager, the film was very close to the description in the books. No doubt there are differences but it was very close. I think they did a good job and was glad to see it. I'm still waiting for Rendezvous with Rama to be brought to the screen.
It's ok, but it doesn't move the dial enough to improve anything. I agree with the producers also that it would have confused the storyline established elsewhere in the film. Excellent share.
Nope. This isn't any closer to the original novels than the rest of the movie. Plus the obvious Death Valley/Southwest landscape standing in for Mars, as has been done since Rocketship XM or maybe Flash Gordon. This wouldn't have saved John Carter.
This intro reminds me a lot of the early 80s film version of Dune. They should have kept this, it would have appealed heavily to older fans of Sci-Fi, which was the target audience of the original books anyway.
While this would of made for a poor opening scene It's not half bad Instead it would of made a better introduction scene to Dajah thoris It gives us all we need to know about her and the state of mars It shows off her intelligences and her strong personality And it give the citizens of helium some character Time wise, set after john meets the Tharks But before the airships battle obviously
I disagree. This sets a more somber tone for the story. And who knows what else Disney ordered differently? We would need a director's cut to find out. And I agree, this was NOT a bad film. Stanton did what others had failed at for years-bring John Carter and the world of Barsoom to the screen.
Good thing this was not the opening! It was NOT a bad film (not saying it was great, but well worth a watch) -- and this would have jumbled up what was a much stronger beginning.
This film would go nicely with Total Recall.

I like the idea of Deja opening the film, however, it does feel a bit too much like the opening of David Lynch's Dune in the first minute.
