He misses the overdrive on the final riff - I love that they kept it like this. The energy of the entire take is so good it overrides mere details!

Honestly listening to these isolated tracks really helps me be more okay with little mistakes in my own recordings. I used to sweat for hours to get a perfect take, when in reality, nobody's gonna hear in the mix that I slightly messed up that one note in the middle of a riff.

    • @JBrooksNYS

That was probably a decision of the mixer rather than Tim. There are 2 bass tracks in this mix.

had this record with me in my backpack on round about 120 private parties if not more. it hurts like shit that none of those i cellebrated with are known anymore, i actually banged my head off to this. it still is "the new" record in my mind. a feeling as if you notice that you left your favourite toy in the vacation home per accident. i seriously cannot cope or resonate with modern music including most metal or esp alternative metal.

This should be a strong and clear lesson in the sheer carrying power of a well written song.
The key is to write songs that have such a powerful energy about them that that makes everything else make sense.
The guitar playing, bass playing and drums are quite sloppy on a lot of Rage songs. By sloppy I don't mean they're bad musicians. I mean that as professional musicians go, these takes would never be approved or make it to the final cut.
But because the song itself is SO well written, sung and performed with such energy and intent, it makes all of this work.
If Rage came out with this album sounding pristine from a technical viewpoint, it would still blow everyone's socks off and everyone would still love it. Then people would not be talking about how good it is because it's so raw, they'd be talking about how great the excellent production is. Case in point - Tool, Soad, Korn, Slipknot, Lamb Of God, Gojira, Deftones, Kendrik Lamar, Childish Gambino, Billie Eilish. If you're reading this and going naaaw, RATM 'feel' like they're in a league of their own, you're right. It feels like that because that's the power of writing a good song! A song that stays relevant 30 years later.
Everything else comes later or retrofits. Write a good song. Perform it like your life depended on it. These 2 things are the ONLY things that matter.
    Man I fuckin LOVE Rage.

    • @fragezeichenwenn

To emphasize the lick and make sure it is heard. Guitarists usually have a pedal they press before playing a solo which increases the volume to make sure the guitar is heard. Bassists usually don't have this kind of pedal, so they play extra hard to make sure their licks or "little solos" are heard. Another example of this is Dani California by RHCP, where Flea does not hit his strings as heard as Tim here but also hits a little harder to emphasize the lick and make sure it comes out among the other instruments.

there is natural distortion due to the stingray being an active bass with the treble set all the way up.
