DJI Phantom fly-away and GoPro camera recovered from lake after 46 days

- Today I found the Phantom after the lake dropped about 6 or 8 feet since last month.
The Phantom actually lights up with a fresh battery, but I doubt it's able to perform like before. I will be testing it this coming week.
The GoPro was in the water-proof housing and kept recording until the battery died.
It's videos were still on the card and downloaded as usual.
The GoPro suffered no problems at all.

the fish were "first responders" to the crash, but their efforts floundered.
I lost all faith in my P1, people would say flyaway was user error until it happened to them.
It's great you got the GoPro back, they're a great camera.
Calibrating your compass every flight won't help if your FPV cam detaches itself in flight. Also, this isn't really a flyaway, it's user error.
I just sunk mine in a lake while camping. (Phantom 1, Gopro 2 no waterproof housing, Fat Shark transmitter) It took me an hour to get it out and I thought it was done. 2 days later when I got home I took it apart and detached as much of the electronics from the body as I could. It was still very wet inside and I took an air canister and Q-tips and dried it off the best I could and got rid of all the gunk. I submerged the Phantom, Gopro, and transmitter in a garbage bag full of Minute-Rice and left it for a week.Yesterday I pulled it out and it was bone dry. Put it back together, tied a 30' twine onto it, and it flew absolutely perfect. Even the Gopro lived, as well as the transmitter. I was in shock. I wont trust that battery that was sunk but the phantom seems to be saved. I wonder if you had done the same if you could have yielded similar results. I didn't lose control tho, I retardedly flew it out of the fat sharks range while on low battery and my screen went static. I turned off my controller thinking it would come back but it didn't. Some kids near the lake pointed out where it slowly dropped from the sky and sunk.
Geeze. That lake is full of bass. They're the best part of the video.
I love how the fish just take up the ending shot!
I truly went sick watching the Phantom crash into the water! Ow man, hopefully this will never happen to me! Great tip about the camera on the battery door. Cheers
Those fish were checking out the new quadopus that just showed up. That was a great video and I'm sorry for your loss. Flying these things can get very expensive. Keep up the great efforts and greeting from Apache Junction, Arizona.
Looks like it almost made it to the shore prior to the crash. Just a few more feet and it would have totally missed the water :>\
You're exactly right about the rth mode. My instinct was not to shut off the controller, but recover by eyesight and manual control. But the plunge was too fast.
Fish... Fish everywhere! Accidents happen.. At least you got your gopro back
There are so many comments saying he broke a prop/lost an ESC. If you fools would put a little effort in, you'd see he clearly states at the end of the video, the camera 'fell off' because of the sliding battery compartment, thus the perceivable horizon was off and making it hard to control
found a nice bass pond!
Great footage. The loss of your Phantom is a shame. Like you said, at least it didnt happen in the middle of the Lake in 200 ft of water. It definitly dosent look like a lake that you would want to swim in.
Thanks for your comments. Yes the music does drown the motor. I watch the original video over and over and I just can't put my finger on anything certain. I really tried at the end to steer by sight as I removed my goggles and saw the Phantom dive. I had that total control feeling with the sticks and goggles until the Phantom took that sharp right decline just as I was returning to land. Oh, and you're correct I was indeed in ATTI.
Lol at the fish cruising by, like they're thinking, "What the ...". I've seen some people putting foam floaties under their copter, maybe that'd help for recovery if there is a "next time".
thats why on my phantom I use a rubber band to keep the door shot. Bad manufacture design in that door area. Great video and love the part with the fish .
WOW!! What a story
I have lost props mid air and had the thing crash. I actually loved the fish shots
Nice Fish ;)
It's a mystery. But I can tell you that when repairs were made, my first flight FPV after repairs resulted in a similar hard bank right, then left in air on return. I chose to leave the Phantom and I now have a new quadcopter build completed today. Some parts from Phantom were transferred to new quad. I will see if new quad has similar issue.
Man those are some tasty looking fish!
What a sinking feeling.....
I think that round black thing at 02:12:24 in the video is the reason you crashed. It looks like your Fat Shark mini camera came off the drone.
He was flying it FPV (First Person View), so just like a video game, it's as if you, yourself were flying through the air. As with any RC aircraft, it's still recommended that FPV aircraft are operated within line of sight.
Glad you recovered it. Shame about the Phantom. But thankfully the GoPro was ok. Take care
I saw where it went down by eye sight. If you thought I lost it by not having a spotter, well no, it went in murky water 30 feet out. But good recommendation for all fpv. Again, found phantom after lake reseeded substantially.
Its actually against FAA rules to fly an unmanned aircraft FPV without someone physically watching the aircraft and maintaining line of sight. The whole UAV thing is new to them and it will take some time to work out new rulings, but in the mean time people are getting busted for FAA violations and fined.
the fish seem really enthralled by the new arrival
That's why I'm purchasing the AquaCopter. Won't have to worry about it sinking or receiving water damage.
Expensive fish finder... but it works well ))
One thing you may want to do is contact DJI and see if they would like to study the crashed Phantom. They may either buy it back from you or give you a new one in trade.
Ya bensuhurd, I will be buying those floaties for my next over water adventure to wrap around the landing gear. Way... way... down the road. I'm still skittish around the lake.
I am glad you got your phantom back... I have watched lots of phantom crash videos... Yours is pretty puzzling. The sound of the motors was a little off to my ear. But it is hard to be sure with the music you added. I was wondering if it was a bearing / motor failure. It looked like you where flying in ATTI mode so it wouldn't be a GPS or compass failure. Glad you got your unit back... But such crashes are always heartbreaking. All the best...
Tomorrow I plan on going to the field nearby and powering up the Phantom as is to see what happens. It actually lit up at home with a fresh battery plugged in after it dried out. I may take on a project to rebuild from this. But if I get frustrated, you can have it.
I have read stories about people pulling them out of the drink and putting new motors on them and getting them back up in the air. Your shell for a start is fine... the biggest question is if the NAZA is ok or not. That is 50 % of the cost of the unit.
i heard a couple comments about the GPS sometimes doesnt get a clear signal and it moves on it own to get a better one but in this case i believe like you said it was the battery that slid out.. at the end you can see the plug for it and nothing attached to the end so on impact it disconnected
Check out all the fish coming over it see if they want a piece of this "THE BIGGEST MOSQUITO" they ever seen.
My friend had the same issues, he replaced the motherboard and so far hasn't done that. In flight footage looks like your. It was flying fine then without warning it banks hard and drops from the sky.
Thank you so much for the after accident report. That is very awesome that you found it! What lake has all those fish?
Those Largemouth bass tho! Take a fishing rod and reel next time you fly there!
Now that you have the phantom back a little forensics on it would be nice. I know the motors are rusted... but i wonder if you can get any sign if the bearings may have failed. Others have reported that the NAZA has come un-stuck from the main board. If that was to happen in flight it would be a huge issue because balance assumes it is level and in the right spot. So you could take a look at that... finally ... you know you may have more salvageable parts then you may expect.
I did have the stock props mounted. As far as overload, I can't find that my accessories or flying would cause overload. I think there exists a glitch in the Phantom's enclosed gps. My new exterior mounted dji compass/gps unit has had NO problems. Once it locks on, it stays locked on. No straying off like the Phantom.
Fish at 5:14 "Yea Jim, another GoPro!"
Sorry about your loss, but at the same time, you should have a spotter when flying FPV (with goggles). Nice Bass shot. ;)
that's impressive that the gopro was submerged for over a month and no water penetrated the case. watches don't even last that long lol
the good watches do. I know a guy who's boat sank after an explosion on board. he was taken to hospital after being knocked out. 3 months later, he started diving to search for his sunken boat and to recover some valuables. 7 months later, he found it but all he was able to recover was his great grandfather's compass a his Omega Seamaster which started ticking again as soon as he picked it up.
Happened here too.
Was flying over a Lake, then hovering in the Air for some smooth Videomaterial.
A few Seconds later the Drone decided too stop doing its Job (i was flying in GPS Mode).
It fall down like a Stone and the Rescue was useless, never gona find it again.
Clearly this is a Factory Error, so they have to refund the Loss.
If you have Proof this should be easy!
Hey thanks I really appreciated the offer. Let me know if you can get it back to live, I heard many stories of the Phantom working perfectly after a month in water. However yours is a bit long =( good luck mate. update us !
If the battery disconnected on impact then the electronics may be good because power was gone. Probably need to disassemble all the parts and clean them before trying anything like flying.
I'd throw a cast net in that lake :p
I had the same issue with my Phantom, and the problem was that I hadnt imported default settings after firmware update. When the Phantom has all the right defaults, it shouldnt be able to bank that much as in the video (unless something is broken/disfunctioning). With a higher payload you should change gain settings etc.
What was your distance at the furthest? Looked more than 1,300 feet away for sure.
and yes, cool fish shots
That was so sad to watch. At least the fishes attended its funereal
Song is Sail by Awolnation
Beautiful
I had the same issue with my Phantom 2 luckily I crashed it on the ground.
I had the same problems with my TBS Discovery :( Crashed badly a couple of times and almost lost the quad in the woods... Switched to CC3D flight controller = no issues but no gps either.
never seen a DJI ( DaveyJonesImmersion ) test before ~ no gators ~ no snakes ~ no sharks ~ no scuba ~ no swim ?
I still don't know. It's happened 3 times now. Either I am having a seizure at the controls, or there's some glitch somewhere. I have seen several RUclips videos of guys having same issue where phantom steers off course. One notable source is thathpiguy. He mentioned an issue in one of his videos.
(SEE Video Description above for links).
You're not the only one experiencing this problem. There are other RUclips videos showing the same uncontrollable "fly away", and there's a thread on RCgroups about this problem, which is also happening with the higher naza versions. Most conclude that it's a GPS module or firmware issue. I recently bought a Naza lite system, same as Phantom, and my GPS module is not even recognized by the main control. What flight controller are you using on your new quad? I bought a couple of KK2 fc's to try.
thinbluelinefilms maybe retitle the name of this video. It was not a flyaway.
I see in my fpv goggles, what the camera sees pointing forward. Like cr0710 said, it's like a video game, a flight simulator, but your really flying an object in the sky. I go to an area I know and fly around through the goggles. I wouldn't go to an unknown area unless you have spotter(s). Never around crowds.
It sure looks like the battery fell out of the craft, and pulled the quadcopter down. I almost had a very similar crash, the battery door opened on a hard spiraling bank turn, the battery almost slid out of the body of the phantom and unbalanced the craft, causing it to dive towards the ground. Luckily I was able to bank backwards and slide the battery back in mid flight before completely crashing, I check the door every time now.
^^^^ This is why it came down ^^^^ Not compass, ESC, broken prop, dead batteries, high power lines, loss of signal. Massive weight shift and loss of center of gravity.
Well... you should have seen the battery in the video if that's the case.
I've flown my Phantom and almost lost the battery. IT was hanging by the connector. It was flying fine after the battery fell out, but i landed right away ofcourse.
you should put some fishing line and hooks on the new copter and catch them big fish :)
Those were nice largemouths. Which lake is this?
Yes, it only sank to 15 feet by shore instead of 200 in the middle of the lake.
Painfully close to shoreline
Not sure what "ATTI" means, as I am new to the Phantom world, but, in theory, if you experienced a dive from a similar altitude, would shutting off the controller and allowing the GPS RTH feature take over work to your favor? How did the flight go after it dried out?
Hi just watched you Phantom crash, Flaming expensive is it. I have had the door open with mine So now have cured the problem with an elastic band.
I undone the front legs and put the elastic onto them stretching them over and abouve the battery door and it works
Crashed quadcopter not big enough for scuba sanctuary... If you're going to crash your quadcopter in the lake, it needs to be at least.... 3 times that big..
I saw the wire flipping right before the crash... That was your FPV camera from the Fatshark Predator V2. (I saw it when you pulled out the dead phantom in the beginning) That camera probably fell off its velcro or taped position on the front, and got caught in one of the props -_-
OR
A motor or ESC burned out :(
Either way, that sucks :(
Hello glad you got some of the equipment back, just wondering if you can sell me the phantom shells for cheap. Thanks.
Can u see what the phantom sees while ur flyin it?.. how u know what its looking at?.. do u have to keep it in ur line of sight?
5:23 curious fish
Why did it take you 46 days to go find it?
whats up with the music. sounds like 2 tracks playing over each other... coulda done without any music. thanks
its awolnation sail dunno what the other one is
Ah man you crashed only a few ft from the shoreline. What kind of Phantom do you have that has a “battery door”?
It was big Fish and many of them. You was really unlucky because it was 2 meter from land when it be Uboat. Yes ofcourse calibrating every time is god. Was this Dji Phantom 2?
So hows the Phantom mate, any updates, it works or what please tell us?
No keepers. would have loved a follow up at the end
Was that at Marshfield VT?
Oh god, so close to land too...
5:17 fish are like Da Faq
'Sail' by Awolnation...but a remix version.
mine has done that 2x's it looks like the ESC failed just like mine. iv changed them all on this second crash but if it happens 1 more time im done
note to self.....do not fly over water when i buy mine.
what lake??? tons of bass there
manual mode?
I got a sinking feeling getting close to the 2:20 mark. Sorry brother.
Thanks
Anyone know the name of the song?
What do you think caused the Phantom to bank hard right like that?
Did you not see it went down right by the bank?
Is it possible to make a Phantom 2 waterproof?
Yes, DSLR pros have a waterproof Phantom
+Aubatron Yes keep it in the box it come in...lol
my friends did the same but his is still lost to this day.
What lake it that? Looks like it's full of nice bass... Little corn meal, some oil.... Mmmmmm
if it happens in gps mode than you have to recalibrate the gps ..i had that once too
Check out Thomas Bo Petersen video he thinks it's related to the compass.
Whats The Song PLEASE HELP!!!
You had either a motor or prop failure
