Okay, let me summarize: you had a crash into the sand the day before. You didn't open the thing, carefully cleaned it, tried the motors individually... Instead you give it a careful test flight over a busy road, a river and powerlines. Very good idea indeed ...
Hi PHANTOMenals! :) one of the scariest Quadkopter-vids I've ever seen.totally agree that double-check ALL functions before flight.and power lines, magnets, generators, etc can cause an blackquaddown!glad only u're props are broken.I use my phantom in the same configuration for business and we have responsibility to the public.the new self tightening nuts are cool, but not the only possible issue while flying.greetings from germany
This right here is my main issue. Not people flying irresponsibly, but the poople who go and order RTF units, and depend on the GPS features/modes. If something goes wrong, they dont know how to fly well enough to get their quad back safely. Its a major risk. IMO, everyone who flies multirotors needs to be able to fly in acro mode.
I have the Phantom 3 Standard and the Mavic Pro. I always do Lift Offs from the ground or a wooden table. I recharge all batteries and calibrate the compass.
High voltage power lines at 3:14. They emit a stong field wich confuses compass. Noticed that problem is esach time within certain distance of those HV cables...
Bullshit, I flight near powerlines and never got this kind of behavior, in fact, the only time I have a flyaway was far in the mountains, DJI dickriders might say that the clean air cause interference...
Whew! I thought it was going into the water for sure. I'm sorry that this happened to you but at least you recovered with minimal damage. Thanks for sharing this with us. Greeting from Arizona.
Absolutely brilliant video. You got so lucky saving it too. Well, i am glad you retrieved it thats for sure, and you ended up with a great video too, not to mention clipping that mossy stuff on the water and dodging them lines. Haha ... superb :)
A few things I can suggest. 1st you are flying over High Voltage Electricity Wires. On both fly-aways you were near, if not, directly over the electricity wires. 2nd I assume you collaborated the compass in that area. Again the Electricity Wires would be your enemy as they produce an electromagnetic field. 3rd like others have suggested, you took off from your car again, Metal objects may interfere with the Compass and GPS system. Hope this helps :)
I've had this problem with the naza on my old 450 quad. It's not 'fly away', its the GPS position hold deciding its a few miles away from where it actually is. Switch it into manual mode and bring it back. If that does nothing, cut the motors. I've caused this problem on purpose a few times to test what works and what doesn't, generally switching to ATTI mode works, but put it in manual to bring it back just in case. It happens when the compass is messed up somehow or another (in this case, launching from the top of your car), and when it doesn't set home position correctly, (you most likely did not let it acquire enough satellites before taking off), and then you attempted to use GPS position hold, which caused the 'flyaway'. Daft
well :) Thank you for your comments! I'm still flying safe and sound because of the lessons learned in this video. I uploaded it so others can learn too. As far as reckless flying... come on :D Just search DJI phantom on the tube to see where people fly :D In my location besides the road all is swampland, noting like a big city :) Anyway , safe flying everyone!
Majority of the time it is pilot error that causes fly-aways. not calibrating compass, not having at least 6 satellites, flying in high wind, flying in high wireless traffic areas, ect... the phantoms are well built and will fly right if you just follow the damn checklist! over 100+ flights on my Phantom Vision 2 and never once have i crashed or had a fly-away issue.
Jessika Farrar I'm thinking about getting a Phantom. I've done many hours of searching and research to prevent things such as this. Since you are experienced and successful, are there any more warnings that would be good for me to know? In case I missed something.
Dont fly directly over people. Dont abuse the batteries by draining them down below 10%, Dont fly near airports or anywhere that its obvious planes and helis take off or land from. Dont fly over or near property that you can't afford to lose, break, or damage. But I'm sure you read that stuff already.. Pretty much just don't be an idiot. Just take your time, get to know the bird really well. Keep it simple until it starts to feel comfortable.
Gates Goin don't listen to these DJI apologists. I am an experienced pilot and know the dos and donts in and out. I have just had the last straw break for DJI. Had a very nice TBS discovery go on a wild ride into the trees because of a naza v2 flyaway. Unlike most of the flyaways that people have mine had a black box recorder and I can see EVERYTHING that happened during the flight. Perfect RX/TX signals, good GPS signal with no less than 8 satellites the whole time, good voltage, and the only explanation after looking at the logs was just that the naza controller went stupid. These people always want to blame the pilots blabbing about how many good flights they've had. So had I!! Doesn't mean that there is not a fatal flaw in their controllers that show up under random circumstances. Motors and ESCs all fine except for the bent shaft from the crash because of that junky controller. Its pixhawk, vector, or bust from here on out. DJI has to know about this problem by now but are just too chicken shit to come out with it because it would cost them a lot of money. Its sad too because it has the potential to be a great setup without this fatal flaw but their inability or unwillingness to address it makes it an accident waiting to happen. I feel I'd have been better off sticking with my old APM on this build.
These symptoms you present the video is exactly what happened to my Phantom two weeks ago, the collision with the ground was so violent that the sd card of Gopro jumped and could not get the video. I have already asked the DJI aid but so far no response. It is certain that this happened to me after updating the firmware to 3.16. And in my case the phantom took off from a rock ... What firmware version was installed on your Phantom?
i'm almost sure its done by the powerlines. you can see its a magnetometer fail. thats why its drifting a circle. the best option you to make was ATT mode. with ATT you over rule the magneto and GPS
I am considering purchasing the DJI Phantom however there appears to be many reports like yours which is making me wanting to look elsewhere! (Are you listening DJI???) One point a few people claim is the WiFi on the GoPro could be interferring with the Phantom. What's your opinion on this, was there any chance you had WiFi turned on? Shane.
Definitely some sort of radio interference, each time you gained control and brought it back toward your location it would go out of control on the same area. Are you still using the stock radio? launching from the car top had no bearing on why this happened, but those nearby power lines probably did.
Hey ! i m new at this, and i m looking for information to decide if i go or not with this DJI Phantom. Would you tell me what does Sats, IOC and ATT mode means? And besides that, do you still recommend this ? Thanks !
LOL I loved the commentary!!! I just posted my fly away that happened today. I'm thinking I didn't let it lock on to GPS enough.....or, my cell phone interfered...I forgot I had WiFi turned on the phone. I fly a Phantom 1. No FPV. Great video!!
Starting up from a car roof made of mild steel (that is to say magnetic steel) is asking for trouble with the compass - almost certainly the cause of loss of control. I very much doubt that overhead power lines had anything to do with the problem.
One of the things that causes problems is large metal objects nearby when doing the IMU warm up. Throws the compass off. You took off from the roof of a car. Large metal object. And any time you travel a considerable distance the 30 seconds it takes to do the compass dance is well spent. Glad you recovered it. So it wasn't a fly away after all.
In the future, dji will release a drone, with sensors inside it to avoid hitting objects. If I was you guys I would wait until dji comes out with a better drone.
Two issues, compass calibration due to car roof and power lines or perhaps high power transmitter overtaking tx power. New firmware checks for loss of stick movement over 10 seconds and triggers rth.
You were definitely really lucky my friend. So that's it. .. I'll scratch the Phantom from my wish list. Carajoooooooo. .. It seams like pretty much all those quads have some sort of problems. The Phantom has a ghost inside, the Blade 350 QX lose its propellers, and the Walkera QR have a lot of problems with acquiring satélite signal. .. OK. .. Maybe I should just stay with the airplanes. Merry Christmas my friend.
Thanks for Sharing, it was a great training aid. Note to self.....no launching from metal objects, no flying near high power lines, no flying near high power radio transmission antennas!
Lucky, I never fly in GPS mode now, I have the left toggle switch Home lockand Course lock disabled too. I don't trust the NAZA IMU doing too much of the flying for me.
please read the instruction manual regarding the compass and GPS calibration, u can watch videos about that in you tube too, so u don't get such problems. Also avoid areas of wireless interferance..
Interesting. Did you notice that both flyways happend in the exacly same location? Just On the top of the power line. Could be coincidence but we should avoid fly closer to power and any type of antennas.
Wow, another DJI Phantom tried to return to home.. Home in China that is. why do people love these Phantoms so much, when a large majority of them seem to have this issue?
Is it because they are stupid.. and take off with large metallic objects nearby ? It has a compass for a reason and each location needs to be calibrated. Number one tip: AVOID METAL OBJECTS like taking off from a CAR ROOF!.. lol
yep you need to start from ground level not from a resonant surface like a car roof. also don't fly close to high tension power line or anything that could have a lot of electricity running through it. power lines put out all sorts of interference.
I believe it actually has something to do with the compass, loosing track of which way is north or something. This could explain some fly-aways I've seen, including with my phantom. It could believe its well leveled to go home but sudenly realize the gps coords are going further from home and do weird stuff trying to figure out how to correct and... well thats my guess
Initial problem unknown, but after fast descent to near see level the line of sight was lost behind trees and power lines. It then tried a return home when signal lost and then various other loss of signal events totally confused it.
Power lines for sure. l was flying with a friend recently and we both had problems as soon as we went near or over the power lines. Either loss of FPV or control problems. I've got a rubbish polly helicopter and that just drops out of the sky when it gets near lines too.
I just pre ordered phantom 2, and after watching all of these fly away videos, I'm having doubts now.. not sure if I'll cancel my pre order to switch to another Quads... I'm thinking of 350 Pro....
I think this fly away is due to user error. It's a well known fact that launching from the roof of a car is a huge No No as that jacks up the compass calibration. Then add all the power lines in the area and it's a recipe for disaster.
Brian Westfield My brother's Phantom 2 had a flyaway taking off from the middle of his field in rural PA just after a compass calibration. Stop trying to blame users when this is obviously a Naza issue.
Brian Westfield Yes, but clearly it happens regardless of the situation. Watch the dozens of flyaways on RUclips, a lot of people take off in ideal conditions and the Phantoms still just go.
Brian Westfield I highly doubt that, a magnetometer is not affected by taking off from a car roof unless you calibrate your phantom on top of the car to begin with. What is more likely is the phantom control system has a very crappy rc link that somehow external radio interference can actually take over radio commands, be recognized as valid inputs and NOT trigger failsafe. Imagine if Futaba, JR, Spektrum or Hitec receivers would accept interference as control inputs, they would go out of business very quickly. Look it up if you don't believe me, the newer firmwares have a 10s timeout failsafe in which if the sticks stay the same for 10 seconds it triggers RTH Anyways, i'm no expert just sharing thoughts.
You took off on top of your car. Also A ton of power lines were present. Which one caused the fly-away more???? You may never know but my guess was the compass being off because of launching your quad from the top of your car. You can not set it on that much metal an expect nothing to go wrong with the compass. Either way I am glade you got it back.... Good luck and happy flying.
Did you maybe do a Home point calibration on top of the car or just above it? That would mess up the magnetic field and cause havoc like I have just witnessed.
I agree with BlueJay, those high tension power cables put out a large amount of EMF, quite enough to confuse the compass and GPS on the Phantom. Find a better site to fly......
The power lines do mess up a drone. I have video of flying with even a sd card camera drone and was seeing tons of electronic junk going on with the drone. Also wifi drones really hate any of that sort of stuff. Oceans lakes rivers carry electronic disturbance as well.Im a retired amateur radio operator.Used to build antennas and stick out 20 feet from a shore line in the water and broad cast radio signals really far distances where on land I wouldn't be able to transmit as far. The metal isn't a good idea. Find a grass spot away from the road and set it up.
You really think, it's a good idea, to start your copter from the (metallic) roof of your car? - You know, that metal can disturb the compass of your phantom, which is mounted on it's legs? - I think, that's not a fly away, this is just the result of neglecting one of the most fundamental safety rules for quadcopter flying ...
Nailed It Platy80! Its the small innocent things we don't think about before we fly or drive or anything. Taking off from the roof of his car next to a highway!? Check out my comment and see what you think. Just trying to make people aware that we need to be more conscious of what we are doing as the world becomes a more crowded place physically and technologically.
I don't use IOC, and the compass was calibrated the previous day, 100 km north from this place. Coming to thing about it i could have done better on this situation, and i'm very happy that my gear is still flying. Ariel - yes i would still recommend the phantom, for the price it has no match, but i would remind that it's not a toy, but a small aircraft, so it must be operated with great caution, following all the guidelines and checklists, otherwise you get videos like this
TX for posting. However surely you know you took off very close to some serious power lines. That almost always freaks out the onboard electronics. Power lies will often cause just what you experienced.
DJI fail. High voltage power lines could be the problem. I believe aircraft with sensitive compasses may be more effected by this. When in doubt switch to ATTI mode whenever possible in a situation like this. It's too bad the Phantoms are programmed to Return to Home when the compass is getting mixed signals. It may be worth while to set the Phantom to simply stop and descend during a loss of signal when you know you'll be flying near power lines.
one problem maybe the power lines also... Avoid flying near that many, your flying in a dip. with tres when you lost it the 1st time you were in line with trees
Has anyone heard about a class action lawsuit against DJI for Phantom flyaways? Saw something about it awhile back, and need the info since mine flew away. DJI intially said
put on the phantom a gps /gsm traker,60 grams,if phantom fly away then call the traker with your mobile phone and u will get back an sms with coordinates, google them and will have exact position of phantom
Dude... that's some pretty irresponsible flying... You had a problem with just the day before, yet you decide to: - Take of from the roof of your car? - Fly over and next very frequently used road, judging by traffic - Start from a low vantage point, limiting your radio range and visual line of sight - fly very close to water, even though you know the platform recently had issues, you couldn't explain - fly in close proximity to powerwires Plain stupid.
I paused the video a couple seconds in to comment and here it is: "You took off from a metal platform, idiot" I will continue watching the video now. EDIT: Yeah you're definitely going to need some flight training.
Return of the Quad (My fly away experience - similar to yours!) Not the first and it won't be the last. How long until someone is badly hurt with one of these...? As much as I hate regulations, it seems that maybe it's time for some standards of some kind. Naza is supposed to be of good quality - why are there so many "fly aways?" I have switched all of my helis and planes to APM now and haven't had an issue...
I have one and I have no problems I see in this video a big mistske. Fkying from the top of the car METAL Your compass was not well calibrated as metal mskes interference. Sp your dji was not able to get straight "home" means on top of your car METAL! I have a friend thst had exactly the same issue.. and the phantom became crazy and lost it for ever somewhere deep in a river..
I landed my Mavic on my car just to test. Compass went completely apeshit. At this point you're preety much in ATTI mode. Took off and it somehow calibrated itself. Metal objects and drones don't mix.
And Ariel:sats=satellites for gps-signal Atti=attitude-mode(switch on the right side) Ioc=intelligent orientation control(switch on the left off the transmitter) And I would recommend phantom1 if u wanna do stunning video and photos at also same time, but low flight time. For fun and do aerial photos with long flighttime, get the phantom vision and always:practice, practice, practice!and u will get fun and cool stuff :) check on RUclips: Free like a birhd 1.0! To get an idea, what I mean And post me feedback, thx
dji has an army of people in an office in china that dislike these videos
Probably power lines sending similar signal. And in a panic. Turn off controller to force fail safe.
And how do you forget about FPV?

Bingo!
And despite it happening once, he went back to the same place for more of the same.
No sympathy from me.
and thats why real pilots fly manual

Guys its not DJIs fault. The owner took it off from a car (which has metal which will mess up the compass)
two days ago the same thing happend to me with a phantom pro... I was taking of from a beach, an empty broad beach... nothing fancy...
It`s a compass error due to the power lines and take off from car`s top ... ?
You re very lucky! What was the problem? Why did the phantom do this action?
Hello Stoyan ! thanks for sharing this ! besides this problem, do you still recommend DJI Phantom? Thanks !
I've had this problem with the naza on my old 450 quad. It's not 'fly away', its the GPS position hold deciding its a few miles away from where it actually is. Amazing flight and incredible water escape , do you know why you lose control or what the phantom did that ?
well :) Thank you for your comments! I'm still flying safe and sound because of the lessons learned in this video. I uploaded it so others can learn too.

Is this the first phantom (Fc40) or the 2?
MrAmericasbadboy It's v1 with Naza v1. I got it 2 weeks after the first release :)
Stoyan Stoyanov always the naza POS
You launched from the metallic top of your car. Metallic + Phantom compass = certain malfunction (in your case = fly away).

Is there a tracker device available you can put on a phantom so you can find if it gets lost?
spencereng Yes. I got mine back after yesterday's flyaway with a Loc8tor Lite.

How the hell did you get gps lock setting on top of your car? Stay away from metal.
Damn Bro, I don't even own a Phantom but I know launching from the roof of a car is no bueno. I guess chalk this one up to user error?
Interesting. Did you notice that both flyways happend in the exacly same location? Just On the top of the power line. Could be coincidence but we should avoid fly closer to power and any type of antennas.
Wow, another DJI Phantom tried to return to home.. Home in China that is. why do people love these Phantoms so much, when a large majority of them seem to have this issue?
Is it because they are stupid.. and take off with large metallic objects nearby ?
It has a compass for a reason and each location needs to be calibrated.
Number one tip: AVOID METAL OBJECTS like taking off from a CAR ROOF!.. lol
DJI dickriders always find someone or something to blame instead of admitting they pay big money for shitty products...
look for the reasonin the GPS antenna, it is vulnerable to interference and better turn it off completely
COOL!!
2:55 - 2:59 that's some skill you have there

Wow that was epic !
I just pre ordered phantom 2, and after watching all of these fly away videos, I'm having doubts now.. not sure if I'll cancel my pre order to switch to another Quads... I'm thinking of 350 Pro....
if your flight control system is naza then it will be just like the phantom...same company dji...
I think this fly away is due to user error. It's a well known fact that launching from the roof of a car is a huge No No as that jacks up the compass calibration. Then add all the power lines in the area and it's a recipe for disaster.

Look it up if you don't believe me, the newer firmwares have a 10s timeout failsafe in which if the sticks stay the same for 10 seconds it triggers RTH
Anyways, i'm no expert just sharing thoughts.
Китен, Дяволската река, но защо не е на български?
Never take off from areas of high magnetic interference -- i.e. your CAR ROOF!!!
+100500
Isn't that hight power lines? #1 thing to avoid...
best recovery ever!
Did you maybe do a Home point calibration on top of the car or just above it? That would mess up the magnetic field and cause havoc like I have just witnessed.
BTW you had luck up your ying yang.
Find a grass spot away from the road and set it up.
power lines is the best culprit here
Is it GPS mode ?
Firmware please?
I wonder if the DJI phantom his shielded wires maybe that would help if it doesn't
Does it have a manual mode too in addition to the pussy modes?
You were extremely lucky it didn't go to the water
one problem maybe the power lines also... Avoid flying near that many, your flying in a dip. with tres when you lost it the 1st time you were in line with trees
i can see the HV overhead cables below and its' electron-magnetic field will make your phantom's compass malfunction for sure
Has anyone heard about a class action lawsuit against DJI for Phantom flyaways? Saw something about it awhile back, and need the info since mine flew away. DJI intially said
Part of the fun flying a Phantom.
put on the phantom a gps /gsm traker,60 grams,if phantom fly away then call the traker with your mobile phone and u will get back an sms with coordinates, google them and will have exact position of phantom
I love my P3P so much but I'm so afraid of losing it I only fly it indoors which is kinda defeating the object :(
It could've been because of those big powerlines.
Magnetic fields from the power lines could interfere with the compass
Dude... that's some pretty irresponsible flying... You had a problem with just the day before, yet you decide to:
- Take of from the roof of your car?
- Fly over and next very frequently used road, judging by traffic
- Start from a low vantage point, limiting your radio range and visual line of sight
- fly very close to water, even though you know the platform recently had issues, you couldn't explain
- fly in close proximity to powerwires
Plain stupid.
My thoughts exactly. It people like this that give quadcopters a bad name.
Well said.
I paused the video a couple seconds in to comment and here it is:
"You took off from a metal platform, idiot"
I will continue watching the video now.
EDIT:
Yeah you're definitely going to need some flight training.
+Rob van Kemenade I was seeing if anyone mentioned this. Car roof. Oh man... that compass was totally borked before he even started flying.
Holyshit! What a flight!
I think i would have landed it when it was the right side of the river (but maybe wrong side of the road?)
Return of the Quad (My fly away experience - similar to yours!)
Not the first and it won't be the last. How long until someone is badly hurt with one of these...? As much as I hate regulations, it seems that maybe it's time for some standards of some kind. Naza is supposed to be of good quality - why are there so many "fly aways?" I have switched all of my helis and planes to APM now and haven't had an issue...
I have one and I have no problems
I see in this video a big mistske.
Fkying from the top of the car METAL
Your compass was not well calibrated as metal mskes interference.
Sp your dji was not able to get straight "home" means on top of your car METAL!
I have a friend thst had exactly the same issue.. and the phantom became crazy and lost it for ever somewhere deep in a river..
its all went poo for you my friend. been there done that.
I landed my Mavic on my car just to test. Compass went completely apeshit. At this point you're preety much in ATTI mode. Took off and it somehow calibrated itself. Metal objects and drones don't mix.
Metal objects make no difference if you got GPS. Just don't calibrate the compass on them. Heck, aircraft land on huge metal warships all the time.
never take off from your vehicle compass goes nuts and you have issues 90% of the time
You were over power lines running along the highway. That would be my suspect.
That thing is out of control. hope it wound up in the trash.
I know this isn't funny at all bu that was HILARIOUS
NOT THE WATER !!! at least it did miss
And Ariel:sats=satellites for gps-signal
Atti=attitude-mode(switch on the right side)
Ioc=intelligent orientation control(switch on the left off the transmitter)
And I would recommend phantom1 if u wanna do stunning video and photos at also same time, but low flight time.
For fun and do aerial photos with long flighttime, get the phantom vision and always:practice, practice, practice!and u will get fun and cool stuff :) check on RUclips:
Free like a birhd 1.0!
To get an idea, what I mean And post me feedback, thx
why it did that dave,,,, why for it did do that? i don't knowwwwwww
wooooow.....
looks like it was his fault. NEVER take off from the roof of your car. Compass and large metal areas dont mix.
Mistake #1, flying in high winds, mistake # 2, you should have put it into Sport Mode and you would have had Zero problems the entire flight!
:D no sports mode on phantom one, no double compass, only good old atti mode which saved the day :D
Why the fuck does every autopilot type quad do this shit?
