- In this exclusive interview, Neil Tappin sits down with Rick Shiels to discuss, among other things, his plans for the future. He talks about the best videos he's made and the direction he wants to take his video content, including collaborations. We also ask Rick about the best way to get potential ways to get golfers from the range to the course.

There are lots and lots of golf RUclips creators and I watch a good few of them off and on. The ones I tend to drop for a while then come back to are the ones that are too ‘same old, same old’. Throughout the past 6 or 7 years, Rick’s content has never fallen off the watch list ever. His content stays fresh and his enthusiasm is extremely endearing. He’s a serious business person now with a lot of responsibilities to the people he’s employing but he still comes across pretty much the same as he did at the start.
Fair play to him. 👍🏻
My reason for starting to watch Ricks videos at the start was he comes across as a really nice bloke. He had some competition when he started but his humble and cheery personality ensured that he would succeed .
I thank Rick for showing me how to read puts by straddling the line. Completely changed my putting. As far as Augusta goes, be a little kind, Rick, let Pete film the front nine. That way you still one up him without looking, um, petty. Cheers and congrats!
So glad to hear him say he’d take Guy Charnock; Peter Finch; Matt Fryer; Andy Carter to play Augusta.
This is primarily one of the reasons I think people love Rick. He’s such an average guy (not to mean that as an insult) but he’s not all about the biggest names biggest fame etc etc…. He’d take his pals who he’s gone through this journey, and started with. He doesn’t forget where he’s come from.
It’s enjoyable to watch him. Class.
As someone who has just got back into playing golf this year, after a 33 year hietus, I can vouch for 2 major things that Rick has pointed out here: the clientele of the game has changed massively, for the better, and, I have to say, for the worse, too. There's a lot more beer cans on courses now than there used to be, that's for sure - enough said! But, also, as a beginner, or returner, being pressured by players that just expect you to play and move on makes you mess up every shot and delay everyone even more, to the point that I can spend 30 minutes standing aside letting people play through until there's a quiet spell. Golfers really need to appreciate that not everyone is confidant and good enough to keep up with the game in front! Maybe L plates on bags should be a thing! 😂 Nah, actually, I'll just let people play through! Great interview, and he's helped me get back into golf for sure! Get lessons and work it out on the range... It will make your golfing experience much nicer...
I routinely hear/read people saying that we can't expect beginners or high handicappers to maintain pace of play, but I occasionally play with a couple of guys who struggle to break 100 and both of them can play a round in 4 hours or less. Pace of play has a lot more to do with how you spend time when it's not you turn, so that you're ready when it is.
I had a break of 31 years. Prefer to play alone for the time being and spend more time at the range than on the course.
I’d agree that there has been changes. A little bit of the American beer and golf cart culture has seeped in. A few more “serious competitors” as well who are just a bit obnoxious. Think they’re tour pros and everyone else is a pleb who’s in the way.
It seemed more genteel when I was a kid. And more egalitarian. There used to be all sorts of cars in the car park. People from all walks of life rubbing shoulders. A lot more BMWs and Mercedes these days. A bit more intimidating to the new golfer.
As for pace of play, I consider my shot while I’m walking to it. Check the yardage, choose the club and hit it. There’s no point spending too long because I’m probably not going to be able to hit the perfect shot anyway.

@@DWHarper62I do. I never said I'm not. My biggest issue is that I'm not golf fit like I used to be, yet. I played off scratch as a boy. But when I turned 16 and was working my father told me I was paying my own green fees - it just so happened that beer and girls were far more interesting to my 16 year old brain, so golf was dropped! My rotation is developing, gradually, but I don't have the same body as I did when I was 16! I've had 33 years of physical work messing up my back, hips and knees. I was also 3 stone over weight, but I've now lost 1 1/2 of that because of playing golf. I'm trying, hard, but that phase of needing L plates on your bag is hard, harder than I imagined, and in fact, that's the most frustrating thing: in my head I should still be able to do it, I had a natural swing, but it's very difficult to get that back with an aging, over-worked body!

I do share Rick's vision that Golf needs to keep evolving, being more friendly for beginners and also for those who do not have 3-4 hours to play on a full 18 holes. Rick has found the good balance on entertainment and more technical content! Great channel and thanks for the interview!
Rick’s content definitely helped me get back into golf after a decade away. He, and Pete, make great content and it’s fun. I think the barrier between driving range and full golf course is in large part time, and it is not golf’s fault. People are too busy. Society does not appreciate the importance of recreation right now. That is something that needs to change for many reasons, especially golf haha.
Rick is the best. Thanks for the view and conversation with the one RUclipsr I've been watching for a long time.
I found Rick's content 5 years ago just as I moved to Florida. I couldn't get around these courses here under 100 at the start. Within 6 months Rick had a breaking 90 and a breaking 80 guide posted to his channel, and using his tips and advice from coaching vids combined with the breaking vids, I ended up able to shoot around 85 on a fairly consistent basis. As someone who doesn't play competitive golf and just wants a few hours in nature, focusing on a simple goal and letting everyday life slip away for a bit, consistent scoring in the mid 80's is plenty good enough for me to go out and enjoy myself without too much frustration building and I owe a vast majority of that improvement to Rick. Also, I've become very picky about sausage rolls LOL.
Apparently getting “in nature” in Florida can involve being cut out of the stomach of a gator or a python. Be careful out there.
The best content remains the Rick/Pete/Carter/Fryer course vlogs. Period.

Great interview with Rick l look forward to his plans with great interest. i liked the learner driver comparison how true. what about more interviews with other RUclipsrs Golf life, Finchy etc.
Rick is spot on about getting driving range golfers. I have spoken to a few people at the range that have never been on a course. They are really nervous about going on a real course. They think everyone who plays at a club must be a really good golfer
I have tried to point them towards 9 hole par 3 courses or academy courses. There are a couple near me which are great way to start. Styal and High Legh.
Rick should start his own RUclips golf tour.Have 3 divisions junior, adult, senior. 2 day tournament each.
Jesus, it's bad enough watching pros play and RUclips golfers . Watching shit amateurs from the junior, adult and senior ranks would be insufferable.
Agree with Rick on the lack of a 'middle' ground between driving range and full course. That said, there are plenty of 9 hole par 3 courses or academy courses around. They probably need to advertise themselves more.
As for many others, Rick's channel was the very first channel that I subscribed. Congratulations, Rick.
Rik is an awesome dude and the likes of him, Peter Finch and Mia Baker are doing a huge amount to grow the game of golf around the world.

Rick is amazing - thank you for this insight into the man behind the channel. I'm a middle aged English lady who took up golf 4 years ago - I've been watching Rick since I caught the 'golf bug' and can honestly say that watching him (also watch Finch, Carter, Fryer and few others) has helped my game and course management enormously. Ricks just has that 'je ne sais quoi' - he's entertaining, open, honest, doesn't take himself too seriously, shows that golf is a constant challenge and that even professionals can bodge a hole! I look forward to tuning in in 7 years time when Rick has 20 million subscribers! Re the road into golf - my club held a free taster session for ladies - then a very cost effective group lesson programme - then Academy and then membership. I'm immensely proud to be a member of my club, I play in inter-club and regional competitions and absolutely love every aspect of the game, the social aspect, the exercise both physical and mental, and the camaraderie the game inspires. Meet a fellow golfer and you've got a friend for life! Good luck to Rick bringing new ideas as to how to make the game accesible for all - it's such a healthy, de-stressing (well, the game can stress you on a bad round, but you won't be stressing about a work issue) thing to do.

Great interview. I look forward to seeing how Rick develops his content, but would love to see some of his ideas for getting younger players from the range to the course. Good questions too Neil.
Rick does a great job and he's only going to get bigger and better. I love his enthusiasm and dedication to doing things properly. I'm just hoping that he doesn't burn himself out but, I don't think he will as long as he keeps his love for what he's doing.

I feel the issues you were talking about in regards to new golfers on gold course....it will only change with time, when we (the younger ones) are actually the main members at golf clubs. Untill the mindset changes it will still be difficult for new members. I've chosen my golf club on how they treat my 9 year old son when he is playing. They are the future of golf and need to be not put off by rudeness and stuffiness.

Hey, you say you are trying to reach a new area of patrons and attract more to the game. I know this is not as glam as the US courses but why not a series on UK public courses? Guy and yourself could do that. Bigging up our home facilities etc

There already is a stepping stone between the driving range and the golf course. It's called pitch and putt.

This isn’t a last 10 years thing.
Celebrities have been playing golf for 50 years.
Beers after golf has been around since before a ball was even hit.
I do think the fashion and elitism has changed however.
I think he's more generally referring to how the attire, and therefore the people, have become cooler in the last 15 years. You have to remember that Tiger still wore slacks, brouges and lambswool sweaters back it his early days. I just got back to playing after 33 years out and I couldn't believe the amount of hoodies, trainer like shoes and tattoos on the golf courses. When I was a junior in the 1980's I was regularly told to take my earing out, and to get those fluorescent socks off! 😂. Tattoos had to be covered up as far as I can remember - at my club anyway! And the brouge shoes aways came with tassels, fringes and metal spikes - they also took a year to break-in and leaked like sieves. 😂
There's 7 days in a week i feel at least one day a week the club should have amateur days where the tee times are more spread and theres no pressure of slow play
