    I decided to make the purchase on a Dihatzu Hijet (CORRECTION does not translates to midget in Japanese) Climber Mini-truck, this one is a 1992, 7th Gen, S83P, 660cc Minitruck. The “climber” means it has rear axle lock. Amir has about 60 units in stock, he was very helpful.
    Researching online I did find l lot of information, but Amir explains a LOT more than I knew, he has been in the business for 15 years. Plus if Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys has one, it HAS to be cool!
    Don't forget you're buying a used vehicle, check it all out, they're over 25 years old! Some are in much better shape than others. Check for leaks, CV boots ripped, Loose suspension, Clutch slippage, clunks etc. Just like any used vehicle
    S839 specs:
    660cc 4 valve 3 cyl engine 48-53hp carbureted
    weight: 1500 lbs
    length 10'8" (128"). width 4'6" (54") w/o mirrors. Height 5'10" (70")
    Load capacity 800 lbs
    I purchased mine at Boeki USA, www.boekiusa.com has their updated inventory. Ask for Amir and tell them MOTOCHEEZ sent you!

    I know there may be other videos of this.. but this is my Cheezy style!
    More info (Wikipedia):
    The Daihatsu Hijet (Japanese: ダイハツハイゼット) is a cabover microvan and pickup truck produced and sold by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu since 1960. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans (Hiace and Hilux), the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's Kei trucks and Microvans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab, Suzuki Carry and the Nissan Clipper.

    I'm in Tokyo, have been for 28+ years.
    The Kei trucks (Kei means "Light Weight") are great, cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure.
    The engines are 660cc three cylinder.
    For traction the Subaru are the best, because the engine is in the rear.
    You can tell the older trucks by the round headlights, the square or rectangular lights are on the newer trucks.
    I'm a carpenter, and I have a Subaru sambar Micro van, it's 10 years old and I plan on having it for a very long time.
    You should get 100,000km out of the motor without any trouble, at 100,000 Km it's time to change the timing belt, other than that they run forever.
    Great trucks!
    Cheers from Tokyo!

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 лет назад +8

      Hi, thanks for the information. I considered the sambar but they do not come with an axle lock which I need for the terrain around here as you can see haha.

    • @TokyoCraftsman
      @TokyoCraftsman 5 лет назад +15

      Well I'm in Tokyo so I don't need 4wd, but when it snows (yes it snows in Tokyo) with just good snow tires I've got more traction than most guys with chains, because the weight is over the rear tires.
      You can get 13" rims for these trucks, so you can put larger tires on them.
      Cheers!

      @MotoCheez  5 лет назад +6

      True! I wish the 13" rims for this hijet we're available in USA. Hard to find except ATV rims

      Sambar is great that has a body-on-frame, rear mounted supercharged 4-cyli, coil spring rear suspension.
      However, Sambar truck with diff lock and supercharger is super rare.

    This is the same place I bought my kei truck from. I got a 1987 Suzuki Carry. The owner is a great guy, can't say enough good things about him or the trucks he sells. I got mine titled in NY, used it to do home renovations. Twenty sheets of sheet rock, lumber, furniture, you name it. So handy, so much more useful than my Tacoma for stuff like that.

      Donnie Brookins 25 years or older imported as a passenger vehicle you register them as classic vehicles. That’s how it works nationwide as far as I know, you can google Registering Mini Trucks in Florida and see what folks say. I only know about what I and other locals have done with any certainty. Most of the trouble is the DMV not knowing what to do, a problem they have with almost all import vehicles.

I lifted it 2" and put 24" off road tires on the existing rims. The truck will go anywhere. It also will carry way more than it's own weight. Great video!

    If you like those mini trucks you would love the next general size higher. Never seen them in N America but of course Asia, Africa & here in Bermuda is crawling with them. As much bed space as 1500 pickup, fold down sides, available with diesel, A/C, power windows, all kinds of goodies, gassers usually 1800-2000CC, some are duallys, fuel sippers.

    Glad I saw this! I've been looking for one of the Japanese Kei trucks since I worked at Yosemite in the early 80's; they used them as utility carriers and trash haulers, but all were made with left-hand drive. A dealer in Reno was selling them, but they were limited to 25 mph for some reason. I'll be keeping up with your progress. Thanks!

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 лет назад +1

      If it was limited to 25 miles per hour, they were the newer import trucks that could not be registered for the road. If it's over 23 years old you can register it as a classic.

      @@grantprice1932 Generally no. Some places allow LSV registration, but if you are looking to register and title it for normal road use, it needs to be imported when it is at least 25 years old. You also cannot import a 22 yr old vehicle, wait 3 yrs, and register it. It will never be exempt.

    Been wondering how to get my hands on one of these trucks. So practical for running around town and work on the farm. When I was a kid my Dad was in USAF. We lived in Far East for many years in the mid ‘60s thru 1972. My dad had one of the grandpas of these trucks. A 3 wheeled Toyota with a little 2 cylinder engine. Drove it to work and all over Okinawa. We had a blast in the thing!

    Thanks for the detailed review. I don't know why as a large build man (6' 360#) I find these mini pickups (and vans) fascinating. Before mentioned I was thinking "glorified side-by-side/UTV." Not for over the road, maybe a great inner-city delivery truck. The next step up Suzuki Samari ($5k) then Haflinger - Pinzgauer ($10k-$20k). Would not have guessed these trucks held up so well for 75k miles (120,000 kilometers). Agree American brands gave up on not only sub-compacts but even compacts. Think 1964-70 Dodge A100 (2.8 slant 6, 100hp, 3-on-the-tree).

    Used these on a farming apprenticeship in Wilton NH. Great truck, we used it for towing veggies, carrying a bed full of rocks (NH sucks for farming because of rocks), and used it to buy tractor parts. We could do a u-turn on a street that would require a 3 point turn in my 1500. I know I would buy one if I own some land. Easy to work on as well, except the farm had one with a carbonator, with a little bit of studying I learned the system and added the knowledge to my belt hopefully. But I for one am a big fan for these mini trucks.

    We need these in the US, better than the ATV’s and golf carts ... in Peachtree city(Georgia), golfcarts are legal to drive on public streets... these mini-trucks would be even better with the closed cab, ac or heat and an actual bed to haul little stuff. Especially if you have a farm or small store.
    I love the way the bed has multiple ways to open from the sides.
    Big truck manufacturers like Ford, Chevy & Dodge would lobby the government into outlawing these gems if anyone tried to sell newer ones. True that they aren’t great on crush tests but so does the mini fiat and smart cars.

The most common are the panel vans, their engines are so high revving and really fun to drive. Must have been one of the first vans I drove helping a family friend doing deliveries for his butchering business. The load these can carry is crazy, for their size. Obviously hauling cement and hardcore in one is a no no.

    Namaste, in India there is a whole category of these light trucks starting with TATA ACE. It was primarily made by Tata Motors Limited (now owner of Jaguar- Landrover) to replace finicky 3 wheeler cargo auto rickshaws. Tata Ace has created a new segment and new trucks are priced between 2.25 and 3.35 lakhs INR ( 3200$ to 4800$). Common specs Engine capacity is 1400cc, output 70 hp and it shares engine parts with other TATA passenger vehicles so parts are cheap and its very easy to maintain. These mini trucks are road legal in all Indian staes and only drawback is, they are overloaded many times with inexperienced drivers driving them on already congested Indian roads.

It was a manual transfer case the but locker was electric. It was so convenient for setting CM pheromone puffers in the orchards because it fit down most rows and had plenty of bed space for bulky but lightweight cargo. If I had more land I would have one. They're excellent for little jobs at the fraction of the cost of a side by side and have way more bed space. They're not near as capable off road but they're very practical if payload and bed space are more important than off road capability.

    For popping around town, or doing light work on a small farm they're great. And fun to drive.
    I've been in Japan for awhile, when he turned on the road, my head was spinning.

    You know, if I had a bunch of property to maintain I'd much rather have one of these than a UTV. These are fully enclosed, have heat, sometimes even AC, and they're not gonna be more expensive than a UTV, and you can even register this and put it on the road if you needed to run into town for something.

    Pretty crazy expensive for a 25 year old vehicle, but I suppose as they have to specially imported the supply is very low

    We call this multicabs. We can make anything out of these kei cars. Vans, double cabs, passenger vehicles, garbage trucks. Name it we can make it into one. Even a hearse

    Be honest. You just wanted one because of Bubbles. I wanted one too as soon as i saw Bubs drive one but i don't like the radiator placement.

      @MotoCheez  5 лет назад +1

      Haha. You got me! The radiator isn't in that bad of a spot. It's protected somewhat too

      @@MotoCheez im upstate New York and needed a pickup to daily so i keep milage low and the salt off of my inheritance (5 speed, 1995 Honda Passport), so i just got what i was able to afford before winter came: a 2003 Ranger with a cap on it. There is a guy around me who sells these, but they were way to expensive for my budget. Maybe someday.

      Daihatsu makes many of the Toyotas you see in Japan. For many years they made, probably still do, make Toyotas. The Toyota Cami, Town Ace just to name 2. Both are great products.

      Toyota has been a major shareholder of Daihatsu for many years. As of 2016 they bought the remainder and Daihatsu is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. In Australia, once Daihatsu left that market, you went to the local Toyota dealer for spares and parts (like I did for my Copen). There's even been rumours Toyota Australia considered the newer model Copen to release there with a Toyota badge and support. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daihatsu "Daihatsu was an independent auto maker until Toyota became a major shareholder in 1967 as the Japanese government intended to open up the domestic market.....In 1998, Toyota increase its holding in the Company to 51.2 percent by purchasing shares from its major shareholders including financial institutions...... In August 2016, Daihatsu became a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation." Different factories and sales/marketing/support teams - same owners.

      BTW, Daihatsu Motor Company is the oldest Japanese auto manufacturer est in 1907. DMC engineers and manufactures Toyota compact models as well as Daihatsu badged vehicle. Hijet has the highest share of K-truck special purpose trucks (ie. dump, fridge, deep fridge, extended cabin etc.)

    I have been inspired! I have bid, won, and paid for one of these in Japan. I am waiting for it to get on a boat over to the US now. Happens to be the same engine/year as yours. Mine isn't the Climber but the Jumbo so I don't have lockers but I have 5 speeds and AC. Much like the one shown in SE01 EP30. Mine is intended to be a run-around truck and something I can tow behind my RV so I won't be doing a ton of the mods you did but some will for sure be done. Gotta have Flair.

    These little Bongo Trucks are so much fun to drive. I was stationed in Japan for 5 years and enjoyed the one we had at work. Only issue is they're not built for people over 5ft 4 & I'm 6ft 1.

    I wonder if I could fit one of those in the bed of my pickup lol and just subscribed and in Utah you drive your utv and ATVs on the road as long as they have plates and bunkers and lifts and stuff and are registered

    • @MotoCheez
      @MotoCheez  5 лет назад +1

      Yes Google search mini truck in bed of pickup. People have done that, they do fit. It's crazy. I had a couple other people say that Utah is good for those. I was out there for Moab a week loved it I'd love to bring the mini next time.

      @obsornobs6063 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah nice and maybe if I buy one I will just take my old obs and load it up in the back instead of take a trailer and Utah is nice like that heck I don’t have to do emissions or safety on my truck anymore and I actually seen kids driving there utvs high school and people driving them around and stuff

    My dad used to have a 1981 Suzuki ST90k pick up in the early 1990s (In England). It had an 800cc engine. It was great fun!
