Happy Monday everyone! The wait is finally over and our full review video on the redesigned Forester is now live! While this is still not the quickest or most fuel efficient option in the segment, if you don’t want a complicated hybrid or turbo engine and just want a pure ICE vehicle, it’s hard to beat the combination from this new Forester.
Love your intros. Love how the intro music builds up. 😀
Wife has a 2017 forester touring. Best feature is handling. Worst is lack of power. Doesn’t appear Subaru has fixed that problem
Handling? Subarus are boats... that is the reason i bought mine.
@@Hallowsaw not sure which model you have but the steering and suspension of the forester is extremely responsive compared to other vehicles. If it had more power, it’d be a really fun vehicle to drive. I’ve never driven a Mazda but from the reviews, I imagine that’s what it would be like with its handling and more power.
You mentioned the take rate for the old Forester Turbo was not high. The issue with the old Turbo was it used Premium fuel. Put the 2.4 liter turbo from the Outback in it (using regular fuel) and it will sell.
Some of us that want to keep our cars long term prefer to not have a turbo.
@@JohnDoe-wy2pyif you are looking for longevity and reliability then you probably aren't looking at a Subaru. You'll want a toyota Honda or Mazda. I would put Subarus reliability above Nissan and Mitsubishi. Which isn't saying much.
$41K for a luxury Forester but still only 180 hp? That is absurd. Like Sofyan said, Forester buyers don't buy this car for speed, but c'mon.
It's an engine that works you're not even buying it so why does it matter you're just a hater
@@truckercowboyed2638 lmao ok Karen.
To me it’s not about speed but efficiency. The speed would just come from receiving a good hybrid.
Lol yea an engine that works slow…try to pass someone and barely make it and sound like the motor is gonna blow up in the process
At that price point you're better off with the CR-V/RAV-4 Hybrid, more power and better gas mileage
It really looks like an Explorer in the front
You beat me to this comment
But also completely different. Do a proper comparison and then post an accurate interpretation
With a new but uglier Pilot in the back
Thought the same thing.

At $41,400 we are in BMW X1 territory with 28/35mpg and 0-60mph at under 6s. Roomy, nimble, quick, quiet. The Forester is smoother riding and uses regular gas. That’s your plusses.
You left out the repair costs on a BMW and any German vehicle for that matter. Way too much. I will take Asia's repair costs any day over German vehicles.
I understand the “ if it’s not broke don’t fix it “ sentiment but seriously? Same basic output and tech? C’mon Subaru. Standard engine? Fine. Make the turbo and a hybrid as an option from the start. Thanks for this vid Sofyan.
Owner of a ‘19 Sport w all the options here. I really enjoy my Subie. I’ve actually off-roaded in it, traveled cross-country, commute, you name it. Has been totally trouble-free. This new one does NOT give me “want this” or “ooh an upgrade.” Soooo many shared parts, barely anything new. And IMO they made the Forester uglier w the facelift and even uglier with this “all new” model. I still think the ‘19 serves “unfussy utilitarian boxiness” but that’s all subjective. Curious about if any current owners get any desirous tingles from the new model. Also I know a lot of time has passed and the days of getting a great deal on a new Subaru has passed, but I got my fully fully loaded Sport new for 30k even. I don’t think, if I was in the market today, 40k for this model would be at all tempting.
Yes. Wife owns '22 Forester and loves it, I want to trade in '20 CRV Touring for this. Reasons: 1) 360 camera for parking. Can't see my front end in the CRV 2) Less road noise 3) Aspirated seats in hot climate. 4) Much better stereo. 5) CRV infotainment operation is a mess. 6) This has better ground clearance for flooded streets. I don't care at all about 0-60 times or gas mileage. I'm semi-retired and only put on 8-10K miles a year.
Yes, 2019 Touring; which I will pass down to my son; a.) this is supposed to be 40% more quiet inside, b.) better lane centering, c.) front ventilated seats, d.) two tone interior, e.) I hope it is as trouble free as my 2019 which hasn’t cost me anything these 50k miles later. F.) low roof racks should reduce noise; g.) premium stereo; h.) slightly larger gas tank is fine previous single tank range was very good.
Spare tire is in the cargo hold. It's below the Styrofoam divider
Currently own a 21 Forester Sport and looking to trade in for an Outback XT - love my Forester, but I need some extra refine from the powertrain. This 2.5L F-4 doesn’t cut it for me anymore especially when climbing steep mountain grades.
I traded in my 2020 forester touring as my leased ended. I wanted to get another forester but didn’t want the same thing. I upgraded to the 2023 Outback Wilderness turbo which I love. Not loving the Mpg though. One thing I wasn’t a fan of my forester was that when I drove to visit my cousin he lived on a hilly road and putting power to that thing was like I strangling it to breathe to make it up he hill. Now with my outback it has no issues. When the new Outback gets redesigned I will make the decision if I am staying with Outback or the forester gang. Btw I loved my forester was the best safest car I ever drove.
I can’t believe they aren’t offering the 2.4 engine (not to mention the 2.4 turbo). No reason to trade in my 2017 Forester XT at this point.
Every 10 years or so I come back to see if anything has changed in Subaru world, but not. Same 30 year old engine, now crappy CVT mated to it, interior about 10 years behind competition and still ugly on the outside. Yep, they are still doing it. It's amazing that people continue to buy those vehicles.
We can confirm Subaru is the least advanced car company in America. But I will say they are still one of the safest brand to drive. That’s about it for Subaru. They have nothing else they can pitch for sales.
@@letzgow6110 The only people that are buying those cars are long time brand loyalists for life and young kids getting WRX. They have no way to attract new customers.
This is not 1980's, anyone coming from a half decent car after sitting in one of their cars will leave. Most of customers buy with emotions, those cars don't invoke any.
That company has no vision, stuck with the same worn out motto for ages. What they project as "rugged" is a combination of bad looks, hard plastics, cheap materials and bad infotainment. Reliability is also not there, from imminent head gasket failures, coolant leaks to oil consumption and now excess RTV in oil pan seal getting sucked into engine.
I get it that they don't have resources of big car companies. but instead of making 10 crappy models, they should make 3-4 excellent and innovative ones and build from there, otherwise they will be stuck in the same loop making mediocre people movers forever.
Look at Koreans, they dug themselves from bottom of the pack, overcoming bad reputation and are now cranking highly desirable vehicles that have style, comfort and technology. Sure they have some duds (2.5 is a dog) and their dealership service is an utter disgrace but their 1.6T and hybrid models are pretty good.
@@letzgow6110 - Subaru's reliability is mostly above average.
@@letzgow6110 they have the best awd system of any non luxury brand. Their shape is very practical and easy to see out of. Sensible things that people like.
For being one of "Subaru's best selling nameplates", it sure feels like it has always been, and continues to be THE afterthought of the whole brand.
That powertrain is really dated at this point and they need to do better. They really need to add a hybrid to better compete with Honda and Toyota. I consistently break 40mpg in my hybrid CRV. The Subaru manages to be behind in both power and MPG.
FUGLY is the first thing that comes to mind. This is from a 4 time Outback owner and current owner of a 2019 Outback.
As an outback owner you have no taste so you can’t tell a good redesign from bad. Nuff said
Outback is not fugly ? 😂
congratz on a 1M!!
I own a decade old XT Forester. I had a 2023 Wilderness as a loaner, from the dealership, and I can say no turbo, no way. Paying this kind of money for a Subaru, I expect it to actually move, instead of just rolling.
Sub design, looks like an Explorer. An Engine, that can’t get out of its own way. 0 to 60 with one passenger and it takes over 10 seconds. That’s not underpowered, that’s dangerous. Imagine it packed with a family and all their stuff? As a former Subaru owner, I’m really disappointed. I won’t even start with a CVT thing.
I hate the single exhaust tip, outback and crosstrek has hidden exhaust that is so much better !! Dual tips would have looked better but for a Forester with simple engine, WHY Duals?? So what I think, just hide the exhaust.
Mazda 3 hathback naturally aspirated 2.5L is 191 HP and 6spd auto! Shove it up Subaru.
Great review on the Subaru Forester as usual. I currently drive a Rav 4. I will patiently wait or the turbo charged version of the Forester to come out. Also @theredline , what is the name of the bag in the trunk to the left with the water bottle in it. I like the hard top and front, thinking of upgrading my bag or work.
Subaru lost me when they lost the Turbo
OMG, 0-60 in 10 seconds...LMAO, what a shit box!
Excellent overview. For me it comes down to the Forester vs the CRV. Both at about the same price at the top trim I believe. Agreed, a hybrid should have been introduced at the initial offering; faster and better gas mileage. Maybe not enough incentive as is to trade in our 2019 Forester Limited.
There's one thing I do like about my 2010 versus this one when you open the engine bay they give you the struts this one you have to prop the hood up
Don't care about the 0-60 but that 40k price tag is not settling with me. You can buy a 24 ascent for $41k or an outback, etc.
That’s a base ascent. The touring (same trim as this) is going to be 52k. Outback is a little closer though. ~45k
Touring trim, though? Nah
@@eoak134nah man you can get a just barely broken in ascent touring for 40-45k 2024.
@@Hallowsaw that’s not new MSRP. Apples to oranges.
Cars are expensive and for 41k I probably wouldn’t get a touring. A current 2024 wilderness is 38k MSRP and people seem to be okay with that.
The front looks like a mid 2010's Explorer.
That's an insult to Ford's design team 😂 not sure how Subaru approved this design.
I recently was able to sit in one of these newer Subaru vehicles with that size of center screen, but what I found to be problematic with it is the portrait orientation. Seems nice, but the size of the backup camera screen, in effect, is the same size as my 2014 Civic's screen. I'd prefer a horizontal style screen for larger viewing. Seemed to be quick to response, though.
which one is more comfortable this 25 Forester or the 24 Outback please?
Great vehicle! Subpar engine. Cmon, Subaru!
The SUV was never meant to be a race car. The 8.5 0-60 is not really slow. It will not challenge a current Corvette, though in 1985 & 86 the 0-60 would match the Corvette V8. If packed with gear and four people inside, while being at 5,000 foot elevation, you might have a problem. I guess at that point the turbo is needed, and I will agree with you. Of course the gas mileage goes down and long term reliability might go down -- hard to say.
10 seconds 0 to 60? Is that correct??
At 4000 feet elevation
Sought after is a stretch. What is the backup for this statement?
Hold off on buying a 2025. The 26 will have "major' changes.

It needs more power, at least 10% more to account for increase in weight over the years since the introduction of the FB engine in 2011. Even then, it’d still feel slow.
I had a 2021 Outback. My biggest complaint was with the infotainment unit, sometimes the screen would go black. I had a 2022 Crosstrek with a different infotainment unit, no issues with it. Bigger is not always better!
So glad I got the 2017 Outback, just before the steering wheel redesign and the eventual move to side by side cup holders (for some reason cup holders are a pet peeve of mine). I also got the base model (25k) which didn't have the eye sight tech, I can drive myself thank you.
In this Forester I like the rear view camera and things like blind spot and cross path detection, but other stuff like giant screens and start/stop engine is just annoying. And I'll take physical controls over screen controls any day of the week. I would also want to see the rear seats lay completely flat like my Outback, probably just keep it forever.
I really like your jacket - what brand is that?
10.1 seconds to 60 for a vehicle costing $41k is unacceptable.
Still looks a few years behind the competition but so does VW. Anyways I miss the early/mid 2010’s XT trim. That was a fun suv to drive. For $40k i expect more power
Rear seats do recline; there’s a string you gotta pull
this is way too slow for a 40K+ car. It might be the slowest 40K+ car in the market.

Used to sell Subaru and man this thing somehow gotten uglier. Feeling like Subaru is going to have a hard time to stay up to date and relevant.
Can’t imagine paying that much for such an anemic engine.
Grandma will love this car. I wish premium package have physical key not push button 😂
There you have it ya'll, 10-second car!
Upscale? You misspelled "upsell." Heated AND ventilated seats are one of those things that should be standard across all new vehicle models over $35k or so at this point. Everything about this refresh rubs me the wrong way; the Forester peaked for the 2018 model year with the Eyesight equipped XT's and it's been going downhill since.
Huge upgrade in the quality and capability of the electronics i think is the big change. Definitely would wait on the hybrid version which has been on the road in Australia for some time now. Great all around vehicle(still if not best ever) but a hybrid model would be confidence inspiring given the price point and typical weighing down as a Family people mover machine. Verdict: yep, looks like a Ford Explorer...just isn't a Ford Explorer which is what everyone will be buying instead.
Everyone: Please update the gauges they are ancient!
Subaru: So here’s a giant washed out playskool center screen, we also put your hvac controls in it and took away the physical buttons.
It’s just gauge cluster, no body would put climate control in gauge cluster. Just admit the Subaru gauge cluster is dated, Subaru Levorg from other markets has digital gauge cluster
If they are still using the dog of an engine who really cares about the cluster? They really need to prioritize performance and efficiency first then they can tackle all the tech. It’s subaru, it’s a small company, it’s going to be slow on massive updates but good grief the hybrid can’t come soon enough.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 I'm afraid you missed the entire point
Your 0-60 test is proof that the Forester needs a turbo. Many people have Foresters in mountain areas and they suffer tremendously since the naturally aspirated engine can’t help the car breathe in the thin air.
Some of us that want to keep our cars long term prefer to not have a turbo.
hard pass on the regular forester. will wait for the hybrid and i hope that will be better in torque and MPG
I am waiting as well.
@@xlprincess123567 Hopefully Subaru will also release decent hybrids/ EVs in the future. shame the legacy was discontinued. they should have offered it as a hybrid along with the crosstrek.
Smaller cargo with seat up from previous gen. Used to be 35+ but now 28. Seat down was 70 now 76
Another great review Sofyan. Thank you for that. But, lost interest in the middle of the video due to Subaru misses in this new 6th gen Forster. Thank you!!! I have a 3rd generation, 2011 Forester XT Touring. I have to say the last generation, 4th, has kept its value as in resale. But, not worth the upgrade for me to get the last 2018 Forester XT Touring with turbo boxer. Besides the "new" tech and safety features not worth the $41K with a puny engine. Another disappointing generation, 6th gen. Way to go Subaru. You know what would be nice. If Subaru would put a Turbo boxer engine with hybrid in the Forester Wilderness edition.
0-60mph in 10s? Is this car from the ‘90s? Surely that has to be a typo.
Love it & want to buy a #Subaru but will only consider hybrid or fully electric vehicle for my next car. So for now, I wait.
To make it a dream car Subaru needs to fix front/rear design, bring back XT engine, make it a bit longer to be sleepable, bring back control knobs, get rid of shiny plastic inside. Not asking about the CVT, this probably will never go away.
I seriously thought that was a 2012 Ford Explorer in the thumbnail.
Front end looks like a Ford Explorer
Video title is a real mouthful
Auto Stop/Start, is it any better or is it still jarring/abrupt?
Turn the stupid thing off each time -- problem solved.
Certainly better looking than the previous gen!
Cx-50 or this Forester? Hmmm, both look good but engine CX-50 wins for me , and that for me is a deal breaker
Over $40000 for a vehicle that can barely get out of it's own way? At $40000 most competitiors come with a turbocharged/hybrid powertrain. I think the last gen looked better as well. I think Subaru is going overboard with some styling cues.
I have type 1 diabetes. That emergency stop feature could be life saving if I were to experience a severe hypoglycemic episode while driving.
I think 180 Horsepower is quite bad for a $41K car. I love Subaru, but a lack of power is so bad. Imagine filling this car up with two or three kids and camping gear, and then try climbing up to the mountains, a little extra horsepower would be appreciated. I think for this car's weight, 180 is not adequate unless you are a 1000 years old and drive 55 in a 65 zone
Spend 5k more and get a crown signia with over 200hp and you will get all that money back over its lifetime in gas mileage
@Hallowsaw doesn't the crown use toyotas e awd? That is basically worthless lol
This thing looks like its inflated. Even the d-pillar looks like it's splitting from being inflated.
It's 10+ seconds to 60 for 40k? That's a hard "No".
He said he was at 4,000 ft above sea level!
I love the Forester. Owned one for 13 years. I don't like the nose on this. Looks like an old Ford Edge. But I'll probably buy the hybrid when it comes out anyway. It's perfect for my use cases.
0-60 in 10.1 seconds? 🤣😂🐌 c'mon that's just abysmal
Normal actually. The reading is taken at 4K feet of elevation. Are other car scores done this way? At sea level, it will be 8.1 to 8.5. Not bad. Not made to race Bimmers of course.
There are some things here that i really like, but wake me up when the hybrid is out.
41k for a 180 hp awd SUV? and it looks like that? Why did they completely move way from the tradition styling. It looked so good before. now it looks like a last generation ford edge.
so this is competeting with a RAV4 TRD offroad that is 3 k cheaper 21 more horsepower, looks better and is more reliable? Subaru wtf
Guess Subaru retired all their good designers. Also, bring back the XT! I still have mine from ‘18.
$41k for a 180 HP CVT lmao!
180HP CVT 41k sticker NO Thank you.
41K for engine from 2005 lol
looks nice and would have considered it, but power is just not enough. Something like this, you need about 250 hp to move it around. Merging into highways will be difficult with 180 hp
Seriously 0-60 in 10 seconds who’s in charge at Subaru is working against the company in my opinion.
Horn is a dealbreaker 😁, but the acceleration? Jeez
It kind of looks like a Ford Explorer as it is right now. Wish it offered an XT trim. I'm spoiled by the 268 HP my WRX has.
Are they ever going to actually change their interior? Fully digital display? Better center console?
Shut up crybaby don't buy it
Digital gauge cluster is needed, but that 11.3 inch screen also seems dated, yes, we need a big screen, but not bake climate controls into the screen, accord is a good example what manufacturers should be doing for a big screen. It has 12.3 inch screen, but also has all the climate control knobs and buttons.
Awesome video for an awesome car. Thank you Sofyan!
I heard the seats no longer recline the 2 inches for safety purposes and high-speed accidents. They are more rigid allegedly
This only makes sense in the Sport down trims. Anything more than that begs for a better engine. Too slow, too inefficient and would be too expensive. The looks are fine, it actually reminds me of the 1st gen cause it looks so boxy. Overall if you get this in premium trim it’s a decent deal. Anything else there are just better options. If prices don’t drastically increase I think it will continue its sales numbers
I bought 2024 Forester few weeks ago (my 3rd Subaru). I knew 2025 has a bigger info display. Unfortunately, Subaru did a really poor job on designing the user interface and they actually made it harder to use. Honda and Toyota are bringing back hard buttons and dials for temp control and air flow control as they realized making them all digital was a bad idea (even though it looked cool in the beginning like Tesla models). So I bought 2024 model to have the real buttons. Plus the Subaru's info screen has a slow responsiveness and it's a bit sluggish. I don't even know where Subaru have found such a poor hardware and software in these day. Even $200 Android table has better responsiveness.
But I still like Subaru and that's why I bought 2024 Forester. I can see the nice things in 2025 Forester: Better noise dampening. 3 eye sight cameras. More classical look. I hope Subaru do better job on the info system.
That is insane so slow it’s not safe these days
Sorry, this thing is snail slow. It is way too underpowered. If you are merging onto the highway, trying to pass (especially in a mountain type of environment) you are living dangerously with this low power output.
Leave the mountain, Marty
If you can't merge with this vehicle you're just a bad driver honestly.
@@NoName-gv6nm Been driving for a long time pal. Probably longer than have been alive. I've lived in the busiest cities with the heaviest traffic. Subaru in Japan has also Digital Tacho ^^
Said before (here) and I'll say it again: Subaru please drop your ancient N/A engines and bring in the 1.6 Turbo engine from other markets tuned at about 160hp for Imprezas/Crosstreks and also offer a 200hp version of the 2.0 Turbo for vehicles like this Forester and the base Outback
So CRV is the only compact SUV that still doesn’t offer 360 camera? As a Honda fan, it disappoints me so much, also, Forester now has ventilated seats as well. So Honda really needs to step up and offer more features on CRV.
No fog lights on CRV is a deal breaker for me.
Why can’t they just add the outback optional motor in it and call it a xt

Looks like a Ford Explorer
at first i thought it was a ford explorer, the front looks exactly like a ford explorer. it's sad that all the car manufacturers are making vehicles that all look alike.
Gauge cluster from 2010.😭
Sorry; but, your acceleration testing at 3,800 feet is only 3/4 of a mile above sea level. So, at 5,280 feet (mile high), I would expect the 2025 Forester to take closer to 12 seconds to get from 0-60. Back in 2016, we purchased a Subaru Forester XT (turbo) to deal with our home's elevation of 5,100 feet...Plus, it is still reasonably strong at 8,000 feet. Was waiting for the 2025 model to replace it; but, I suppose we should be looking elsewhere. Regardless, you are still the best vehicle reviewer in all of RUclips. Keep it up!
That will probably look nice in Wilderness trim. Especially if the honeycomb grille is carried over.
Underpowered and a poor value. The turbocharged boxer engine should be standard. At 3800 lbs with a full tank of gas ⛽️, the NA boxer and a CVT just isn't enough power 😢
