The First Step To Improving Your Mentality In Smash

  • We use our character’s tools so that one person may gain control over the other. Sometimes we have to go a bit deeper, and focus on how players gain mental control over themselves. In any competitive activity, your mentality is a big deciding factor on your skill and overall improvement as a whole. While we may not be able to change your mentality completely, we can at least describe a mentality that everyone should aspire to.

I had a really interesting experience recently. I’ve always been a sucker for bracket anxiety. But by going a new character that I’d never used before really helped me deal with that. I was able to win the first few sets after I was mentally destroyed by my round one and I was able to play the best I’ve ever played with both my main and day 1.

In all the online games I play, I think of my opponents and try to read and mix them up. But Smash? Completely turned off the brain, and I play other fighting games too, it seems that I just can't handle the amount of content in Smash. :<
So I've been hoping to get better at the game. I'm glad your video came out just as I was looking for help.

a lot of these attitudes were very prevalent (at least talked about) in the first game I got into, starcraft. But I'm almost entirely focused on fighting games these days (many years later!), and I rarely see this sentiment. More people are happy to blame balance or anything else, lacking respect for the game, and I didn't put my finger on it until very recently. THis video spells out the proper perspective imo, and I want to spread it much more around this particular part of competitive esports. thanks for this!

Just found your channel. These videos are so nuanced, I would say this is the best channel I've found for this sort of thing. Love how you delve so deeply into the mental aspects of the game, arguably the most important aspect yet the least spoken about. Can't wait for more! Also quick question if you dont mind answering, how does one gain an upperhand using a character with poor frame data? (Without focusing on projectiles.)

As a Banjo main I definitely have to adapt to certain match up. Especially Isabelle and Villager because if they pocket my grenegg then they will hold it until i kill them. So I definitely have to only use it when im confident they wont pocket it.

I get destroyed all the time in Smash online. I don't make excuses, or complain, I don't even call my opponents something along the lines of a no life, or sweat. What goes through my mind when I get destroyed over and over again is "how do people get this good?" and "I'll never be able to improve". It's demotivating. Every time I get 3 stocked by really good players constantly, I just want to quit all together, and stick to fighting bots. It'll be easier that way, and I'd have fun playing the game. After all, video games are to have fun, right? But, that'd be a betrayal of my character. So, I'm just in this limbo of frustration and being stumped. Every video I watch on how to get better at this game is like way more tedious homework. Every word coming out of their mouth sounds like a bunch of gibberish. Nothing makes sense, and only makes me more demotivated to continue playing. Fighting good players constantly hasn't even worked to make me better

It’s better to take your improvement one step at a time then fight players who are clearly way above your skill level and watch videos that don’t make sense. Of course fighting players that are way better than you would just be demoralizing. It’s much more productive to fight players at your skill level and watch videos that teach you how to jump and master movements rather than what mentality to have at your level lol.
