  • Shin Lim's first career goal was to become a concert pianist, but halfway through music school, carpal tunnel syndrome forced him to drop out. Instead, Lim became one of the most astonishing illusionists ever, with dexterity that has earned him accolades from such legends as Penn & Teller. Correspondent David Pogue gets a close-up look at true card magic.

I really love what Shin has said, the most important thing about magic is not the secret, but how you present your act and make people believe that it is magic.

Fellow magicians of his buy his sets with tutorials on how to do his tricks and just give up because of the difficulty. So yea. The secret isn't important. The notes to sonatas by history's greatest composers are available everywhere on the Internet. That doesn't mean anyone can just play them. Takes a lot of work and dedication.

I've studied a bit of magic and you quickly learn the difference between a trick that requires real skill and years of practice, and a trick that works by itself or with very little skill on the part of the magician.
The thing is, a regular audience of non-magicians can't tell the difference between a trick that requires tons of skill, and one that doesn't, because the effect is the same. They walk away mystified whether the trick took years of practice or one week.
When pro magicians appreciate your work you begin to understand and respect the people who have really put in the time to master what can be an extraordinarily difficult craft.
That's why Penn and Teller Fool Us is a really interesting show. They know all the tricks in the book, so the people that fool them are the ones that have written their own books.
I once saw a master sleight of hand magician do the cups and balls but with tiny walnut shells and a pea. (Beginner magicians do this trick with foam balls because they're much easier to handle and they compress down so it's easier to slip them under the cups without being seen). When you're working with walnut shells and a tiny pea, your margin for error is much greater.
He did the classic routine, and any magician knows the principal. But he did it with such skill that even though I knew what was coming next, I saw just one of the dozens of sleight of hand moves. It didn't matter that I knew how it was done; it's really just a joy to watch a master at work.

He put in lots of practice. Not everyone will have the discipline to practice. I remember back around the late 90s. There was a blind guy who did card tricks. He said he filled up two toilet paper cases of used decks of cards while he was practicing. He said he could even feel the difference in weight of cards from a number card versus a court card.

It’s great! You can appreciate the flourishes and get a perspective of everything going on in the stage environment. There are close-up cameras for the tabletop view or handheld view, and Shin is very aware of putting his face in the frame when that is important for the trick. So you have to look back and forth between the screen and the stage. They do great making the live show different, with participation and inviting people up on stage. Recommended!

Quite often, the "secret of magic" turns out to be boring and trite - not necessarily with Shin Lim, who is a sleight-of-hand artist of the highest order, but in many magicians' tricks. So there's two ways you can go if you want to still love magic:
    - You can make a point of staying part of the audience, of not learning how it's done, and continue to be mystified. That's what I decided to do.
    - Or you can do like Penn and Teller, and know a whole lot about what you're seeing, but appreciate the presentation, and the skill at executing standard techniques.

    • @shapowlow
      @shapowlow 2 года назад

True. That's why I think Shin Lim is an amazing performer. As an amateur magician, I have ideas on how he does his controls, passes and other sleights but watching how he does them is absolutely freaking mindblowing. It's exactly how he explained it: listening to music as an audience is great but listening to someone perfectly play a difficult piece you have also played before, makes it even more amazing.

1:03. Damn I hated this part. "There's no real magic on this stage". It's like Shin has to confess that he isn't a demon or something. But the thing is, there IS magic on stage. To me (and many others), magic is not something that is like from Harry Potter books. To me, magic is an experience, a feeling. If you are watching something and it feels "magical", then it is magic. It can be anything, a magician performing a card trick, actor giving a well written monologue, a musician playing your favorite song live, a sun setting down behind the mountains...
No, there's no "magic" as it might be understood from books or other media but there is _magic_ in the world. An experience, a moment, something that you experience. That's what magic should be now a days.

Yep people tend to prefer Asians that don't speak. Once we speak, the illusion that we are mysterious aliens from out of space is ruined. In entertainment, Asian Men seem to only become stars if they are self-deprecating comedians like Pat Morita, Bobby Lee, Ken Jeong or Karate Stars who don't have much lines to speak.

Pretty dumb interview they’re going for the old school tv style editing. There’s a reason why it died I feel like people nowadays care about the person behind the trick I recommend bad friends episode or any interview with the guy

I have to disagree with Shin. When you show how a trick is done you take a great deal of the power and appeal away from the performance.

I guess it depends on the person. For a lot of tricks, once I figure them out, I'm even MORE amazed by them. Sure, some of them feel silly and cheesy, but a lot of them are even more incredible once you learn them. Maybe it's because you appreciate the technical skill involved, or the ingenuity of the design, or the performance flair.
For me, Shin Lim is really excellent at the latter two. There are better technicians out there who make a magical experience based on that. But for Shin Lim, who had carpal tunnel and a nearly severed tendon (which was not mentioned here), his methods of creating magic is with top performance flair and fresh, innovative routines.
