- Blocked pans can be easily cleared using a cheap set of drain rods with the plunger attachment.
Buy a set of drain rods here. amzn.to/31AYAAl

I also now have an Amazon storefront for all plumbing parts. It is www.amazon.co.uk/shop/dereton33
I used a wire coat hanger to clear mine a few months ago (and wearing gloves!). Put sticky tape over the sharp point of the wire hanger to prevent scratching the pan.
Worked first try. Thanks for this video.
You're welcome!
Done that a few times myself. It's lovely when you get a little splash back in your face while you're doing it. You just remember not to lick your lips before washing your face.
Great advice Neil.
If the drainage rog gets stuck whatever you do don't yank it out 😂
Spent bloody ages trying to unblock our upstairs loo. Then i thought hang on let me check the Dereton archive to see how he would do it. God knows why i didn't think of using the drain rods..... worked first time. Thanks again AL
Pleased you sorted it Mark.
Hi Al, I plunged my toilet last week and a few days later I had water pooling on the path outside, when we turned off the water supply pipe (water board) it stopped. Do you think it's coincidence or could I have broken the seal in the toilet and the water is running outside from under the foundations? Thank you.
No that can never happen, the stopcock is leaking, or the joints.
@@dereton33 Thanks Al, turns out there is a leak on the water supply pipe. Large garden so not yet sure if it's inside or out as it can only be heard from internal stopcock. Engineers coming back next week to do further digging in garden to put tracer on pipe! Told not to worry and they have turned my water back on. Fingers crossed It's outside and not under property!! Thank goodness the insurance covers me!
A job I love ! 😬
Just for you this one PB. Ha ha.
Have an obstruction somewhere, toilet very slowly draining, some waste coming up through shower - in process of replacing shower so o shower base - so sit at shower trap to ladle out waste. A drain man has been called.
The blockage will be futther down the stack. Have you taken a look down your manhole.
@@dereton33 Considering getting a Kaercher and the PC15 pipe cleaning kit... this has happened before so need to be better prepared in the future. Was up a 2am trying to unblock it, gave up at 3am. We had toilet fill then slowly drain, below its usual level and a bit of gurgling then small amount of waste fluid appear at shower trap and require "ladeling".
Engineer came and cleared the issue. Apparently the kitchen and bathroom pipes are linked and issue originated in the kitchen section and was backing up to the bathroom.
nice one al
Thanks Ratch.
"Top Tip"
Never...EVER flush cat litter. Plunging rarely works. It is the most stubborn obstruction I have ever had the displeasure of removing...
Emergency call out Sunday just gone.
Bloke flushed puddy tat poo down 1st floor toilet and blocked the internal stack around the area of the ground floor rest bend.
On Saturday, the drain specialists blasted upwards from the inspection chamber in the garden but still couldn't shift the blockage with even high pressure water.
I removed the durgo in the loft. To estimate where the block was, I then counted the rods as I connected them with a screw auger on the end and hit the obstruction at ground floor level.
On removing the rods, half were dry so the water was backed up to the toilet pan 1st floor.
Had to remove mdf panel in kitchen, drill a hole in stack near floor to drain off water into a bucket. Cut out a section of the stack and get my hand in to rake out the kitty litter.
Thankfully, the deodorants in the cat litter masked the smells, so paper mask smeared with mentholated gel was not needed but my rubber gauntlet was only elbow length and after 5 minutes of gouging and scraping, I was up to my armpit.
The cat litter swells up and forms the consistency of thick congealed clay, through which water will not pass. You have to claw at it and roll it into hand sized balls as you remove it.
Replaced section of soil pipe removed with a short section M and F ends and one of these.

In 35 years I have only ever been beaten twice where rods wont work. Collapsed drains and an inspection chamber that had been built over (illegally or without planning authority approval/consent) by a 1 story ground floor extension.
Thanks for the great info Loafer.
You're welcome, Al.
I managed to have yesterday off and I'm off now (11.08) to go leak finding.
When will it ever end? What fun!
A plumbers life hey.
Cool. A plumber also taught me if you get a mop and chug it up and down it also works. Has always worked for me. I have always found mechanical methods are far quicker and cheaper than chemical methods....
Yes, I used to use an old mop until one day the head broke off and got sucked down the pan. Ha ha happy days.
@@dereton33 Oops!
Not only cheaper but safer. Even the thought of having to reach for the drain acid gets me quivering at the knees.
Aman A A mop may well work but I wouldn't fancy cleaning any floors with it afterwards lol
@@cliffcarlo180 Well can rinse it with a few more flushes lol
What I will say is cheap drain rods are OK if plunging a toilet. Ho, if you need to unblock your drain outside, then don't take the risk. I've had a couple of cheap set of rods and after not much use, the metal ends came off while in the drain. Twice I was fortunate that they had broken just within reaching distance and once Dyno Rod had to come and blast the drain rod out. After that, I bought a set of Bailey drain rods. Yeah, they're £30 but we'll worth the peace of mind. Much thicker plastic but still flexible and the ends are brass which is much better suited.
Thanks for the advice.
Hi Al,thankyou for the great informative video,I've had a blocked pan for a good few days,& tried plunger & a "bellow-like" pump for ages, then sprung a leak from behind the sink,& still not clear. However, plumber came out, used draining rods,& hey presto!!Question is,why do they work & the other options don't?Keep up the good work Al 👍.
Right tools for the job.
Wow! All I can say is thanks for the great advice I tried everything else to no luck, but this worked first time saved me a fortune as my toilet was blocked on new years eve 😫👍
You're welcome!
Quick, clear and concise. Thanks again.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the info Al - Much appreciated!
That`s ok John.
What's with the location of the heated towel rail behind you?
It is up high to be above the bath.
