I was sceptical about this video, advising people to attempt to clear themselves but I have to admit your advice was spot on. A great tip for all householders and the tightening of the rods together is just so important, Just one other point I would make is to keep a very good grip on the rods at all times,I once had a 6ft deep manhole that i was clearing and the suction took the rods right out of my hand, Happily, they were just in a good position for me to rescue them when the drain emptied,So yes keep a good grip, Brilliant video once again.
A big thank you. I suspected my sewer outlet was blocked for a few days as the toilet was slow to empty and when the bath was draining the toilet started to bubble. Having watched you video, I knew for certain and went off to Wickes and bought a drain rod starter kit for £23. After using your plunger technique, away it all went and now I have a nice clean and clear sewer pipe outside my house. Thanks to your video I have saved myself a lot of money because I was about to call for someone to come and jet my drain for me which would have cost a fortune compared to the minor purchase of the drain rods. Added bonus is I now have the kit in my garage in case I ever have to do it again
Mate, you're the best! Had tried everything to fix exactly this problem. Bought the rod kit, tried the screw back up from the main drain, nothing. Saw this video just before calling professional help, and your single rod/plunger trick cleared it in 5 minutes. I owe you a pint or two!

I am from America and never seen toilet system like that or a plunger like that. Looks like you save more water then we do. I learned something new today :)
Larger system that are used in America have less chance of blocking narrow british systems block more easily and are also more subject to scale build up blockages. British system do work but not quite as well and it really has nothing to do with saving water and has more to do with saving of materials and ease of building. British streets are also also narrower so smaller systems work better in that situation. London can and does have bigger systems on the mains.
@@MonaHerSelfM The US uses its own resources to build its own country. All that wood, metals, stone and so on comes from the US reserves which it still has plenty of. It does not waste more it uses what it requires to build its systems. US systems also require less maintenance and rebuilding so it uses it materials up front rather than having to patch them up later. The US also has bigger cities so it cannot afford to use British style systems.
Thanks so much for sharing this useful tutorial! It helped me unblocked the main drain of my house, and saved me hundreds pounds! Donated 10 quid. Good Job!
Spot on. I watched your video, borrowed some rods from work and followed your method to the letter. Result - unblocked manhole main drain in seconds! Not a pleasant task but thank you very much.
Good advice all of this. A set of rods are as cheap as anything and last forever. With mine I used to sweep our chimney when we had a wood stove, and have unblocked the drains from time to time over the years. They must have saved me possibly over a grand so far alone!
Al, good advice here, a call out from an emergency drain jetting company can by about £80 or more whereas a set of rods £30 or so for top quality sets. The latter is a one off payment for life. Another trick I have successfully tried on a series of drains is to simply shove a garden hose on full power in from the dry pit towards the full blocked one. This sometimes will abrade the obstruction depending what it is followed by everything working loose.
With rods you have to take hygiene and storage into account. For most people in towns this is not really an option for the odd time they are used. If you live in the country side you can store them properly outdoors.
One thing I do especially if you have a long length of pipe to rod, even though you might tighten the joint they can come loose from the plunging and banging and you dont want that , so I get some builders line, tie it to the top of the plunger or skewer fitting and put some electrical insulating tape around it and as i join each rod I put a little tape around the rod and line so at least if it does come apart you can pull the rods back , the orange builders line is cheap and strong , might save a lot of hassle . excellent video
Hi Alan, I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to put these videos up they've been a great help for us to find and fix the problem that was causing our drains to block up! I can see you've got a donate section on your own website so I'll be sending one over shortly. Thanks again, Dave.
Just wanted to thank you for this video. Our drain outside was starting to overflow, in the morning I brought a cheap set of rods and unblocked it within 3 minutes. Probably would have paid a lot if I didn't see your video, thank you very much much thumbs up
Just used this tonight to unblock my outside drain at nearly midnight at -1C. Thanks for saving me so much time and money. Although now I smell very badly xxx
Great video and advice, thanks! Had that problem getting worse for weeks and today in heavy rain, all the gulleys were overflowing, I watched your video, went and got a set of rods and I now have a fully flushing toilet. There's a bit of water in the trap, but I can see it flowing through to the main sewer....Not usually a job for a woman, but I am dead proud of myself! Having spent a good deal of time fishing blumming baby wipes out of the drain, they are now banned in this house!
The drain you are referring to is a trapped bend, much like a u bend on your sink. It is best to put your hand into the bend to pull out any rubbish, if its clear then the blockage is further down the pipe. Best to look for your nearest drain cover, lift this and see which direction your pipework is headed.run the sink to locate the proper drain run when you see water entering the man hole. If the man hole is full up with water then insert the drain rods in the direction of the street. Al
When the blockage goes it usually because it has hit a wider drain, as you say the main sewer in the road. Sometimes it is just the sheer weight of the block pushing away when compressed by using a plunger.
Thank you for your video. I can see how many others it’s helped but I wanted to add my thank you to the list. Buying a set of rods online has saved me a fortune.
Sir, I am giving you 5*, went to screw fix bought the tools, followed your instructions, and hey presto unblocked drain, saved me £££, hope you have a happy Christmas and a Wonderful new year
@dereton33 I will be uploading a video entitled "The phantom bog blocker of Sheffield 2" In the next week or so. It's more a (Spike) Milliganesque take on the insanity of people being too scared to criticise persistent vandalism of a toilet in a bingo hall. The offender being a "woman" who takes 4 inches or so of single sheet toilet paper from a dispenser and intentionally floods out the toilets. Also includes the weirdest flush syphon ever invented. With your permission, I'll include a segment form this video in the upload. That OK?
Really enjoyed this video, watching someone else do the messy bit. The worst bit is actually going out and doing the same..deep breath and get on with it. Very satisfying once its cleared-a type of personal challenge!
Hi ,usually if the inspection cover has water in it then it is blocked , so keep rodding ,although if it is empty it may be blocked further down the line. See if there is another inspection chamber nearer the main road drain, and take a look to see if that one has water in it , if you cannot clear it don't despair a lot of times it is the main junction in the road which comes under your local water authority , and they have to clear it, it happened to me once. Good luck with it, regards, al.
3:50 Footprint wrench! I inherited a pair of those from my late father. He came to my house with rods and unblocked the sewer. We were the last house on a row of houses and the main chamber was deep enough to stand up in! When it went it took 15 mins to empty. The smell was awful! Useful video. Thanks
No problem . One last thing, I am trying to get my website up and going on plumbing /central heating and DIY but am struggling to get it out there. Do you think you could put my site out to everyone you know , perhaps a like on face book and a mention on twitter if you are on it .Thank you and kind regards, al.
This couple are brilliant .They have helped me with loads of things ,from the Halogen oven to all types of plumbing tips .Keep up the good work you two . keith
I can't thank you enough for helping me diagnose this. I'm based in the UK, and i experienced gurlgling sounds from my shower, and when i flushed all the toilets in my house, the water would rise to a high level in the toilet. By doing some research online based upon the above diagnosis, i figured out that it could be either a drain blockage or a vent issue. I looked into the former possibility, opened the drain cover, as you instructed, in the front of my house, and i could clearly see a blockage (water/waste level high in the drain). However, instead of using drain rods myself, i phoned the water company in my area (severn trent) and they unblocked it for me, as i shared my drain pipes with my neighbours, so it wasn't my responsibility to clear, it was the water company's. They used rods to clear the blockage, removed some items which caused it, and now everything works tickety boo! I'm glad i didn't to unblock it myself, because i would have been unable to remove the items which caused it.
Thanks didn't need to buy the rods we were able to sort it. The problem was lifting the lid of the sewer had to get a friend to get it up . Thanks for great information. 👍
Glad to be talking to someone prepared to listen, often it is all you need, soap powder coagulates and makes a mass,as does the swill down from your kitchen sink,no one hot washes any more and cold feed washing machines do not help matters as I said.Keep it handy in case it happens again,if it keeps on,lift the manhole, find which invert the pipe drains from, and gently back rod toward the gully to clear any blockage.inspect all your manholes, esp this time of year, leaves, etc find their way in.
The jetting machine is king , but I am trying to help people at home who are in a fix and cannot afford to get a pro draining company in as you rightly say they are expensive. One other thing the mop head must be attached to the handle and unless the mop came off the handle when plunging the pan you would have a job pushing a 6 ft wooden handle around a toilet pan bend. regards, al.
Thank you so much for this video, I could not even think I could deal myself with bigger drain blockages. I was lucky the blockage was pretty close to the drainage hole and it turned out to be 5 minutes job and just one extra extension though I am proud as a single mother to be able to fix it myself, otherwise for a simple job I would be charged a fortune by the plumber!
I’m going to have to give the plunger bit a go, next time I get called out on a blockage like this. I’ve always used the worm screw but this looks like a more efficient method. Thankfully, these blockages are fairly rare, most being in the u-bend of the pan. My Rothenberger Ropump normally does the trick. Thanks for the upload Al. 👍🏻
Thank you so much for clear instructions, had set of rods in garage never used, following your video advice, had it cleared in a few minutes, thank you again
Make sure your gully grids are in order too,do not plant trees close to the house, keep an eye on those you do have-tree roots go for moisture, and find their way into pipes for this very reason.Keep an old long screwdriver handy or a big tyre lever (i use both) drain rods with plunger to your drain width, red gloves/gauntlets,screw for your rods too,for real blockages. You may never need them from one year to the next, but drain bills can be big ones if you have to pay out personally.
Thanks for an excellent demo. It takes me back 40 odd years to when we had a farm...still got the rods btw!...lol Never been used since then either, but that time may be fast approaching!
I've watched my brother do ours a couple of times, he attaches the pressure washer hoseto the rods with plastic ties and blasts water into the pipe running away from the house and it works
@@dereton33 i cleared a blocked sewer today using a plunger as you demonstrated. It cleared within seconds. Thank you for your tip. Much appreciated. Keep up your excellent videos.
Great tutorial,....I'm about to 'go over the top' this afternoon with my rods, great tip on tightening them first with a wrench, had'nt thought of that one, thank you so much.
Footprints 👣 were an own brand competing with Rabone Chesterman or Eclipse (whom eventually merged), I always remember them as 'gas crocs'. Found a couple of pairs in dads old tool drawer...a quick whizz on the wire brush and hey presto, ready for many years more use. Excellent vlog...just how I do it too 👍
Such a horrible job; but essential and saves ££££ for calling someone out to do it. A rod kit is cheap to buy and alot cheaper than call out fees and labour costs! Do it yourself. Thanks dereton33!
baby wipes often cause this, they snag up on a rough area of mortar in the sump and accumulate seeing as they dont dissolve and break up like paper does. One time we had a serious back up so bad that the drain cover had lifted and the "carp" was leaking all over the back yard. Its amazing the amount of suction pressure when the thing breaks!
This is a very helpful video for those experiencing 'toilet problems'. The only thing I would add is that it may be more fruitful to locate all the manhole covers first and establish which one is the nearest to the main sewer (furthest from the house) lift that one first - if empty put the lid back temporarily and lift the next one back to the house and so un until you find the one that has 'stuff' in it and that is the one that needs the clearing action. BTW to all those who are advising that he should have worn gloves - it may be shit to you but it is bread and butter o him;-)
Thanks very much. I found a video which said what you said, and I was literally shocked that it worked. The drain has stopped overflowing as much as it used to because I used a plunger on it a couple of times. Thanks very much for your help. All the very best in all you do.
We opened our (flooded) manhole cover that's in our front garden near the pavement, and saw a semi-submerged pipe going towards another manhole cover in the road, when we put rods down it we hit something and assumed that's where it was blocked so we called the water company out. Turned out the blockage was actually right at the bottom of our manhole (like in your video) and the extra pipe was nothing to do with it. It was cleared by rods in seconds but needed to know where to put the rods! If you're reading this don't make the same mistake lol the waste is at the BOTTOM not the top at the side.
The previous owner of my property has put two layers of floor tiles over what appears to be a drain hole cover. I can still see a small 'hole' on each side, which I assume are to lift the drain cover up? What can be used to do this? The drain hole is in the floor of the old kitchen extension. Thank you
Great video. I recommend buying a decent set of drain rods, don't go for the cheap ones, they have a habit of snapping in the pipes. I can't tell you how much of a nightmare that is.
A plunger usually does it,is usually fat,or soap powder build up,cold feed washing machines have a tendency of letting this happen, stuff never truly dissolves. You will hear it pop when it does go.
about ten years ago, the house my wife bought had a "emptied" tank. after a week she had issues with the drains, tank full to the brim, bath water dumped straight on the grass and flushing the toilet meant the manhole lid lifting up as everything was solid. same as the heating system, a firebird boiler from the 1960's (the original boiler was a fireplace back boiler) and half of the radiators did not work. the plumber we had fitted a new boiler, new pipes and radiators. shoddy work meant leaks everywhere :( not even the old boiler got taken, his blood is still on the bricks as he fell on our flint drive.
Super video - we have had trouble with our drainage since last xmas when loads of sewage came up in our garden.. thewater company supposedly sorted it for free using jets etc. A few months later we noticed water coming from the bottom of the extension walls onto the patio whenever we let the bath go, rodding outside drain seemed to work... for a week anyway, now everytime we let bath go/washingup/washing machine it simply empties into the garden overflowing the drain. We have rods and have tried this a few times. Also eggy smell comes into the kitchen when using upstairs bathroom... my dad suggested lifting manhole, which the previous idiots - i mean owners- left under the extension floor.. its all soooo depressing and no money to pay a professional..hoping maybe lifting manhole will work as kitchen wooden floor is lifting.. god knows whats under there! - my babies just about to start crawling as well eeeek!
berrykrushmissk9 That will be the one to rod under the extension, that manhole cover was originally in your garden and would have been the main one to rod out. Regards,Al.
Very helpful. I'm curious: did you wait to get a blockage in the house and then film it or did you intentionally put a blockage down there in order to make the video?
Cling film, apply in layers to a form a tight seal, than from the top, using the plunger in the tank, fill with water till full. once tight and full press firmly with hands spread wide and the pressure should force the clog through.
Two things me old mate,gloves-a must, and some disinfectant for afterwards.I do this pretty regular, tree roots are a pain, people tip grease and fat down which solidifies and causes horrendous blockages and smell-DO NOT DO IT PEOPLE!!!!!!! Also those dozy sods who insist on wiping their arse's on "baby wipes" these things alone make us more money on call out and blockages alone, another big no no! If you use these,Christ know's why,but if you do,bag and bin them NEVER FLUSH AWAY! Had one today!
Ouch. I got a drain rod set at Argos and used the plunger and twirly spike bit which went down the pipe but I didn't clear the blockage. Is that space under the inspection cover supposed to be empty of water? Is there something else I should try or do I need a professional to sort this out?
Great video. Many thanks I had a rod set I'd previously bought for gutters and this sorted the problem. A healthy coating of Vicks in a dust mask helped a little with the smell as the blocked drain in this case was in my garage. Don't think I'll feel clean for a while though 😂
Just done mine with only limited success but I wasn't trying to suck - I was putting all my effort into pushing so thanks for that I'll give it another go. Thanks for great video. PS. I've also tried using the screw attachment - quite a way in (about six rods) I hit solid and can't go further - is this likely to be the blockage or something else like a right angle pipe junction perhaps ?
This is the kind of video we need. Plain facts without cringeworthy hype and poxy loud music. Good on ya mate, you're a breath of fresh air.
Thanks Michael.
And after that, you'll need fresh air, I noticed blasting down with a hose wasn't required. Is it recommend though?

Really enjoyed this video, watching someone else do the messy bit. The worst bit is actually going out and doing the same..deep breath and get on with it. Very satisfying once its cleared-a type of personal challenge!
Yes I know it is a shit job. Ha ha.
Good luck with it,
regards,
al.
3:50 Footprint wrench! I inherited a pair of those from my late father. He came to my house with rods and unblocked the sewer. We were the last house on a row of houses and the main chamber was deep enough to stand up in! When it went it took 15 mins to empty. The smell was awful! Useful video. Thanks
No problem Mike.
This is a incredible video. I think you kept it short and simple but explained in depth, well done 👍🏻
Thanks
Thanks to this video I bought some rods a year ago and have used them with great success, thanks for your video 👍👍
No problem Paul pleased you sorted it.
The mop head is a top tip and has never failed to clear my blocked pan.
The best plumbing channel- bar none!
Thanks a lot.
No problem .
One last thing, I am trying to get my website up and going on plumbing /central heating and DIY but am struggling to get it out there.
Do you think you could put my site out to everyone you know , perhaps a like on face book and a mention on twitter if you are on it .Thank you and kind regards,
al.
Cheers mate was getting nowhere unblocking my drains. Watched this vid and after 5 mins of plunging 2 drains now cleared thanks!
No probs,Al.
This couple are brilliant .They have helped me with loads of things ,from the Halogen oven to all types of plumbing tips .Keep up the good work you two .
keith
Will do thanks Robert.
Great it is all ok now.
What a great video, no nonsense straight talking and sound advice!
Much Appreciated!!! 😃👍👍💯
No problem.
I bought the stuff you used and did what you did under the man hole and it worked. Thanks amigo
No problem John.
Al.
dereton33 Thanks a lot
Proper job, I cleared a drain similar to this one so I know this is genuine advice.
Thanks
Thanks didn't need to buy the rods we were able to sort it. The problem was lifting the lid of the sewer had to get a friend to get it up . Thanks for great information. 👍
No problem Margret.
Thanks for the advice.... saved me a fortune, blockage was outside, rod advice was well appreciated.. !!
No problem.
One other thing the mop head must be attached to the handle and unless the mop came off the handle when plunging the pan you would have a job pushing a 6 ft wooden handle around a toilet pan bend.
regards,
al.
Thank you mate.Got the poles from B&Q for £25 with a pair of long gloves. It took me minutes to clear mine
No problem 👍
Bloody hell, had this problem today and used a shovel and filled 4 black bags, wish I saw this before
Thank you so much for this video, I could not even think I could deal myself with bigger drain blockages. I was lucky the blockage was pretty close to the drainage hole and it turned out to be 5 minutes job and just one extra extension though I am proud as a single mother to be able to fix it myself, otherwise for a simple job I would be charged a fortune by the plumber!
Well done Olga.
Watching drain unblocking videos is almost as satisfying as watching blackhead squeezing videos
EASYTIGER10 I agree, try carpet cleaning videos too, I bet you’ll like them ☺️
Thought it was just me
That's disgusting ewww ur mankyyyy
Why put hands down the toilet discussing!
SO BALD EASYTIGER10
I have this exact issue and so glad I found this video. Off to find somewhere to get a plunger tomorrow. Thanks very much
No problem.
No problem MJ.
Top man. Best guide on plumbing on you tube by far.
Thank you very much. Your kind comments are most welcome.
I’m 20 years old and my dad is going to teach me how to do it really well
Good for him.
I’ve finally did it thank you so much your the inspirational knowing how to unblock drains and I’m into cleaning the drain grate with an bamboo stick
Thanks so much....managed to unclog my drain!!!! And I am richer not having to call the specialists!
Excellent!
Saved the day, great advice, worked like a dream. Top man👍🏻👍🏻
No problem.
Thank you so much for clear instructions, had set of rods in garage never used, following your video advice, had it cleared in a few minutes, thank you again
That`s great, saved at least £ 80.00 just for them to come and look.
No problem pleased to have helped,
regards,
al.
You never know.
Watched your video and did it myself much to the amazement of the ex who though I couldn't manage on my own. A big thank you
No problem, glad you did Ok Carol.
Thanks for the advice. Had the rods, but hadn't used the plunger attachment before - worked a treat!
batteryman40 No problem.
I've watched my brother do ours a couple of times, he attaches the pressure washer hoseto the rods with plastic ties and blasts water into the pipe running away from the house and it works
Great tip.
Excellent work. The plunger is a great invention.
Yes the best.
Just make sure it does not come off the handle , or is too big to actually go around the pan bend.
Regards,
al.
4:06 Footprints, the early version of the mole grip. I inherited a pair of these from my late father. He had a tool for everything.
Excellent vlog...just how I do it too 👍
Mate, you've saved me a bundle. I owe you a pint if you're ever in Ireland. God bless.
Thanks no problem. O a Guiness
Thanks for sharing the info on how to clear the blocked pan or drain.
No problem.
Such a horrible job; but essential and saves ££££ for calling someone out to do it. A rod kit is cheap to buy and alot cheaper than call out fees and labour costs! Do it yourself. Thanks dereton33!
No problem Wendy.
Down goes the clog! Great video 👍
baby wipes often cause this, they snag up on a rough area of mortar in the sump and accumulate seeing as they dont dissolve and break up like paper does.
BTW to all those who are advising that he should have worn gloves - it may be shit to you but it is bread and butter o him;-)
Well said Norman and great advice.
This worked a treat for us. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for the info.
The previous owner of my property has put two layers of floor tiles over what appears to be a drain hole cover. I can still see a small 'hole' on each side, which I assume are to lift the drain cover up? What can be used to do this? The drain hole is in the floor of the old kitchen extension. Thank you
You will need two manhole keys to lock in and lift it.
Great video. I recommend buying a decent set of drain rods, don't go for the cheap ones, they have a habit of snapping in the pipes. I can't tell you how much of a nightmare that is.
Great video! - Going to give this a whirl. Hopefully no ones going to come out fishing for the rods
A plunger usually does it,is usually fat,or soap powder build up,cold feed washing machines have a tendency of letting this happen, stuff never truly dissolves. You will hear it pop when it does go.
Loverly, I unblocked ours today, great fun. Satisfying.🙂
Enjoy it
about ten years ago, the house my wife bought had a "emptied" tank. after a week she had issues with the drains, tank full to the brim, bath water dumped straight on the grass and flushing the toilet meant the manhole lid lifting up as everything was solid. same as the heating system, a firebird boiler from the 1960's (the original boiler was a fireplace back boiler) and half of the radiators did not work. the plumber we had fitted a new boiler, new pipes and radiators. shoddy work meant leaks everywhere :( not even the old boiler got taken, his blood is still on the bricks as he fell on our flint drive.

When is the novel out?
Regards,Al.
Yes good advice with the garden hose thanks keith.
kind regards,
al.
Very helpful. I'm curious: did you wait to get a blockage in the house and then film it or did you intentionally put a blockage down there in order to make the video?
A real blockage unfortunately.
Have the same problem but in a block of flats, should I buy this long pen for cleaning tubes and try it?
Yes, absolutely
Cling film, apply in layers to a form a tight seal, than from the top, using the plunger in the tank, fill with water till full. once tight and full press firmly with hands spread wide and the pressure should force the clog through.
A blocked one.
Seriously though there is a correct name for this type of drain system , I will have to look it up.
Simple and very useful video. Thanks.😊. Too many videos become Hollywood block busters😂
Yes, true
Two things me old mate,gloves-a must, and some disinfectant for afterwards.I do this pretty regular, tree roots are a pain, people tip grease and fat down which solidifies and causes horrendous blockages and smell-DO NOT DO IT PEOPLE!!!!!!! Also those dozy sods who insist on wiping their arse's on "baby wipes" these things alone make us more money on call out and blockages alone, another big no no! If you use these,Christ know's why,but if you do,bag and bin them NEVER FLUSH AWAY! Had one today!
Thanks so much for this video! I have the same problem and I'm too embarrassed to ring the landlord 😅
You are so welcome!
Does the sewage flow into that open drain or was the pipe damaged making it leak out into the chamber?
It flows into the open drain.
Ouch. I got a drain rod set at Argos and used the plunger and twirly spike bit which went down the pipe but I didn't clear the blockage. Is that space under the inspection cover supposed to be empty of water? Is there something else I should try or do I need a professional to sort this out?
Great tutorial either way. And you are the professional! I must have been lucky a few times.
Its always worth a try
Al.
Great video. Many thanks I had a rod set I'd previously bought for gutters and this sorted the problem. A healthy coating of Vicks in a dust mask helped a little with the smell as the blocked drain in this case was in my garage. Don't think I'll feel clean for a while though 😂
Yes it is not the best of jobs , still think of the money you have saved on a drain clearing company.
Congrats on over a million views.
Thanks Julian.
+Twirlyhead . It is more likely a bend in the pipework.
dereton33
Ok - thanks for the response.
