Thanks, good video. I've almost had them snap on me. I lent them to a neighbour who used them in a really rough manner and almost broke them (in my drain! it was a shared drain). I did not realise they got stiffer with age; that is good to know. I think I will check my set tomorrow, which is really old. I'll probably bin them based on your advice. Thanks. I found a better investment was to get a high pressure washer with a 15m hose attachment.
I lived in London, and if the drains get blocked, and it is a shared drain system, it is " thames water " responsibility to unblock them, at no cost to you, check it in your area, they usually send out a contractor to do the job.out, at no cost to you, unless you have a single drain system just for your property
the lockable threads sounds like a good idea but the aging of rods sounds like a problem still if they break or snap.. thanks for the interesting video
Hi Al. When you say, "I was lucky to get that broken rod out." What you mean is, you had your arm right down that full manhole, up to your shoulder in shit, trying not to splash any of the water on your face. As long as the loose rod you pulled out didn't have teeth marks in it. It's a mucky job, but somebody's got to do it. Thanks for the good advice. Stay safe.
I have a set of really ancient cane rods in the shed maybe a chimney Sweeps set originally, might be time to upgrade to something more up to date. Thanks for the heads up..
are they " rattan " cane drain rods, the newer plastic drain rods, get brittle with age, depending on the quality, " Bailey lockfast " drain rods last for years, and would pay for there selves on the first job.
Hi Allen ☺ thanks for the heads up on dodgy rods, I've used the Karcher pressure washer drain cleaning pipe when my drain was blocked between two manholes, , I think the price was similar to a good set of rods , you need to wear waterproofs , and a visor , etc as it can blast the brown stuff back at you, it's a crap job but someone's got to do it,lol, cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.
Hire shop every time what i used to do was use grips on each of the brass connectors not to over tighten but just enough so they dont come loose have used PTFE tape as well
even brand new " universal " drain rods, will come undone, if you do not continuously keep turning the rods in a clockwise direction, while you are moving them backward, or forwards, the best drain rods for domestic use, are " Bailey lockfast drain rods " top quality., I have been a plumber since 1972 and I would use water proof gloves, and wash the rods after use, with soda crystals in hot water
I think this is happened to a lot of plumbers the rods coming apart down the drain but having saying that Baileys make a good sets which you do up with spanner and lock so therefore they can swivel from left to right and not coming apart
@@dereton33 I have the Bailey lockfast set. Not cheap but a damn sight cheaper than losing a rod in the drain and trying to retrieve it.The Bailey's are very good.
I generally use blue water maIns pipe. 25m long in one piece and virtually unbreakable. When I get time I want to add a male brass screw to one end so I can add attachments. The only downside is, it's awkward to handle, transport and pack away.
I wished I watched this before I lost my son in law’s rods with plunger on the end just been quoted £160 for the first hour then £140 per hour for the next 5 hours I’m now looking on you tube for DIY I wouldn’t care I unblocked the drain and was pulling the rods out when they parted
Good tips..
I don't use drain rods much so have hired a set from my local plant hire shop in excellent condition and only £8 for the day..
Great tip!

Too true Paul.

Yes the older they get the more vulnerable to snapping.

Rothenberger do a good set, not cheap but fantastic quality. Nice one Al 👍
Totally agree. Thanks PB.

I never knew you could buy lockable drain rods. It makes sense so will tuck that away in the memory bank.
Cheers Ash.
Cheer for that one, most interesting :)

Thanks for the info. Me, I have been a plumber since 1967.
Once again. Top info.
Glad you liked it!
What’s your opinion of the drain cleaners that attach to a pressure washer? Useless or anything to recommend them?
I would not recommend them for clearing drains.

We all live and learn.
Happened to me today , going to dig a big hole tomorrow and cut into the pipe .
Crap happens sometimes.
